التَّلْطِيخُSmearedوَالتَّغْمِيرُ1and daubed

The smeared and daubed bread.

وَالْجَرْدَقَةُAnd the jardaquahالْغَمْرَةُthe white breadوَالرُّقَاقَةُand the thin breadالْمُتَلَطِّخَةُ،the smeared one,

And the jardaquah, the white bread, and the thin bread that is smeared.

لَاnotأَقْدِرُI canأَنْthatأَنْظُرَI lookإِلَيْهَا،at it,

I cannot look at it.

وَأَسْتَحْيِيAnd I am ashamedأَيْضًاalsoمِنْofإِعَادَتِهَا.repeating it.

And I am also ashamed to eat it again.

فَيَذْهَبُSo goesذَلِكَthatالْفَضْلُvirtueبَاطِلًا،in vain,

So that virtue goes in vain.

وَاللَّهُAnd Allahلَاdoes notيُحِبُّloveالْبَاطِلَ.the vain.

And Allah does not love the vain.

قُلْتُ:I said:

I said:

فَإِنَّIndeed,نَاسًاsome peopleيَأْمُرُونَorderبِمَسْحِهِ،wiping it,

Indeed, some people order wiping it off.

وَيَجْعَلُونَAnd they makeالثَّرِيدَةَthe tharidahمِنْهُ.from it.

And they make tharidah from it.

فَلَوْSo ifأَخَذْتُI tookبِزِيِّهِمْtheir styleوَسَلَكْتُand followedسَبِيلَهُمْ،their path,

So if I adopted their style and followed their path,

أَتَىit would comeذَلِكَthatعَلَىuponمَاwhatتُرِيدُyou wantوَنُرِيدُ.and we want.

That would achieve what you want and we want.

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

أَفَلَسْتُDid I notأَعْلَمُknowكَيْفَhowالثَّرِيدَةُ،the tharidah is,

Did I not know how tharidah is made?

وَمِنْand fromأَيِّwhatشَيْءٍthingهِيَ؟it is?

And from what is it made?

وَكَيْفَAnd howأَمْنَعُcan I preventنَفْسِيmyselfالتَّوَهُّمَthe imaginingوَأُحَوِّلُand turnبَيْنَهَاbetween itوَبَيْنَandالتَّذَكُّرِ؟remembrance?

And how can I prevent myself from imagining and turn it away from remembering?

وَلَعَلَّAnd perhapsالْقَوْمَthe peopleأَنْthatيَعْرِفُواthey knowذَلِكَthatعَلَىafterطُولِlengthالْأَيَّامِ،of days,

And perhaps people will come to know that after a long time,

فَيَكُونُso it would beهَذَاthisقَبِيحًا.ugly.

And this would be an ugly thing.

قُلْتُ:I said:

I said:

فَتَأْمُرُThen do you orderبِهِwith itلِلْعِيَالِ؛for the family;

Then do you order it for the family?

فَيَقُومُSo it standsالْحَوَارِيُّ2the white breadالْمُتَلَطِّخُthe smearedمَقَامَin place ofالْخَشْكَارِ3the bran breadالنَّظِيفِ.the clean.

So the smeared white bread would stand in place of the clean bran bread.

وَعَلَىAnd uponأَنَّthatالْمَسْحَthe wipingوَالدَّلْكَand rubbingيَأْتِيit comesعَلَىuponمَاwhatتَعَلَّقَadheredبِهِto itمِنَofالدَّسَمِ.grease.

And the wiping and rubbing would remove what grease adhered to it.

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

عِيَالِيMy familyيَرْحَمُكَmay have mercy on youاللَّهُAllahعِيَالَانِ:two families:

My family, may Allah have mercy on you, consists of two families:

وَاحِدٌoneأُعَظِّمُهُI honor himعَنْfromهَذَاthisوَأَرْفَعُهُand elevate himعَنْهُ،above it,

One whom I honor above this and elevate above it.

وَآخَرُAnd anotherلَمْnotيَبْلُغْhas not reachedعِنْدِيin my viewأَنْthatيُتَرَّفَhe is treated luxuriouslyبِالْحَوَارِيِّ.with white bread.

And another who, in my view, has not reached the level to be treated luxuriously with white bread.

قُلْتُ:I said:

I said:

فَاجْعَلْSo makeإِذًاthenجَمِيعَallخُبْزِكَyour breadالْخَشْكَارَ؛bran bread;

So make all your bread bran bread then.

فَإِنَّIndeed,فَضْلَthe superiorityمَاof whatبَيْنَهُbetween itوَبَيْنَandالْحَوَارِيِّthe white breadفِيinالْحُسْنِbeautyوَالطِّيبِ،and goodness,

Indeed, the superiority of what is between it and white bread in beauty and goodness,

لَاdoes notيَقُومُstandبِفَضْلِfor the superiorityمَاof whatبَيْنَbetweenالْحَمْدِpraiseوَالذَّمِّ.and blame.

Does not stand for the superiority of what is between praise and blame.

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

فَهَهُنَاSo hereرَأْيٌan opinionهُوَit isأَعْدَلُthe most justالْأُمُورِof mattersوَأَقْصَدُهَا،and the most moderate,

So here is an opinion that is the most just and most moderate of matters.

وَهُوَAnd it isأَنَّاthat weنُحْضِرُpresentهَذِهِthisالزِّيَادَةَextraمِنَofالْخُبْزِbreadعَلَىonطَبَقٍ،a plate,

And it is that we present this extra bread on a plate,

وَيَكُونُand it isقَرِيبًاnearحَيْثُwhereتَنَالُهُthe hand reaches itالْيَدُ،the hand,

And it is near where the hand can reach it,

فَلَاso notيَحْتَاجُneedsأَحَدٌanyoneمَعَwithقُرْبِهِits closenessمِنْهُto itإِلَىtoأَنْthatيَدْعُوَhe callsبِهِ،for it,

So no one, due to its closeness, needs to ask for it.

وَيَكُونُand it isقُرْبُهُits closenessمِنْtoيَدِهِhis handكَثْرَةًabundanceعَلَىonمَائِدَتِهِ.his table.

And its closeness to his hand is an abundance on his table.

قُلْتُ:I said:

I said:

فَالْمَانِعُSo the preventerمِنْofطَلَبِهِseeking itهُوَisالْمَانِعُthe preventerمِنْofتَحْوِيلِهِ.changing it.

So the thing that prevents seeking it is the same thing that prevents changing it.

فَأَطِعْنِيSo obey meوَاخْرُجْand take outهَذِهِthisالزِّيَادَةَextraمِنْfromمَالِكَyour wealthكَيْفَhoweverشِئْتَ.you wish.

So obey me and take out this extra from your wealth however you wish.

وَاعْلَمْAnd knowأَنَّthatهَذِهِthisالْمُقَايَسَةَdiscussionوَطُولَand lengthهَذِهِof thisالْمُذَاكَرَةِ،conversation,

And know that this discussion and the length of this conversation

أَضَرُّmore harmfulعَلَيْنَاto usمِمَّاthan whatنَهَيْتُكَI forbade youعَنْهُfrom itوَأَرَدْتُكَand I wanted youعَلَىto doخِلَافِهِ.its opposite.

Is more harmful to us than what I forbade you from and wanted you to do the opposite of.

  1. 1.التَّلْطِيخُ: تَلْطِيخُ الْخُبْزِ بِالدَّسَمِ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ، وَالتَّغْمِيرُ: تَغْمِيسُ الْخُبْزِ فِي الْمَرَقِ أَوْ نَحْوِهِ.

    Smeared: smearing bread with grease or something else, and daubed: dipping bread in broth or similar.

  2. 2.الْحَوَارِيُّ: الْخُبْزُ الْأَبْيَضُ النَّقِيُّ، وَهُوَ خُبْزُ الْبُرِّ الْمُنَخَّلِ.

    Hawari: the pure white bread, which is bread made from sifted wheat.

  3. 3.الْخَشْكَارُ: خُبْزٌ مِنْ دَقِيقٍ غَيْرِ مُنَخَّلٍ، وَهُوَ أَغْلَظُ مِنَ الْحَوَارِيِّ.

    Khushkar: bread made from unsifted flour, which is coarser than hawari.
