عَلَيْكَupon youأَبْوَابُthe doorsالْأُلُوفِof thousands،,

Upon you are the doors of thousands.

حَتَّىuntilيَأْتِيَit comesذَلِكَthatعَلَىuponالْفَرْعِthe branchوَالْأَصْلِand the root

Until that comes upon the branch and the root.

وَيَطْمِسُand it obliteratesعَلَىuponالْعَيْنِthe eyeوَالْأَثَرِand the trace

And it obliterates the eye and the trace.

وَيَحْتَمِلُand it bearsالْقَلِيلَthe littleوَالْكَثِيرَand the much

And it bears the little and the much.

أَيْOبُنَيَّmy son!!

O my son!

إِنَّمَاonlyصَارَbecameتَأْوِيلُthe interpretationالدِّرْهَمِof the dirham«دَارَ"he turnedالْهَمِّ»the worry"

Only the interpretation of the dirham became 'he turned the worry'.

وَتَأْوِيلُand the interpretationالدِّينَارِof the dinar«يُدْنِي"it brings nearإِلَىtoالنَّارِ»the fire"

And the interpretation of the dinar is 'it brings near to the fire'.

إِنَّindeedالدِّرْهَمَthe dirhamإِذَاwhenخَرَجَgoes outإِلَىtoغَيْرِother thanخَلَفٍa replacement

Indeed, the dirham, when it goes out to other than a replacement.

وَإِلَىand toغَيْرِother thanبَدَلٍa substitute،,

And to other than a substitute.

دَارَturnsالْهَمُّthe worryعَلَىaroundدَانِقِthe sixth ofمُخْرَجِهِits expenditure

The worry turns around the sixth of its expenditure.

وَقِيلَand it was said::

And it was said:

إِنَّthatالدِّينَارَthe dinarيُدْنِيbrings nearإِلَىtoالنَّارِthe fire

That the dinar brings near to the fire.

لِأَنَّهُbecause itإِذَاwhenأَنْفَقَهُhe spends itفِيinغَيْرِother thanخَلَفٍa replacement

Because when he spends it in other than a replacement.

وَأَخْرَجَهُand takes it outإِلَىtoغَيْرِother thanبَدَلٍa substitute،,

And takes it out to other than a substitute.

بَقِيَhe remainsمُخَفَّقًاruinedمُعْدَمًاdestitute

He remains ruined and destitute.

وَفَقِيرًاand poorمُبْلَطًاstrickenمُتَحَرِّجَconstrainedالْمَخَارِجِthe means

And poor, stricken, constrained in means.

وَتَدْعُوهُand calls himالضَّرُورَةُthe necessityإِلَىtoالْمَكَاسِبِthe earningsالرَّدِيئَةِthe bad

And necessity calls him to bad earnings.

وَالطُّعْمِand the foodالْخَبِيثَةِthe filthy

And the filthy food.

وَالْخَبِيثُand the filthyمِنْfromالْكَسْبِearningيُسْقِطُtopplesالْعَدَالَةَthe integrity

And the filthy from earning topples the integrity.

وَيَذْهَبُand it goesبِالْمُرُوءَةِwith the manliness،,

And it takes away manliness.

وَيُوجِبُand it necessitatesالْحَدَّthe punishment،,

And it necessitates the punishment.

وَيُدْخِلُand it entersالنَّارَthe fire

And it enters the fire.

وَهَذَاand thisالتَّأْوِيلُthe interpretationالَّذِيwhichتَأَوَّلَهُhe interpreted itلِلدِّرْهَمِfor the dirhamوَالدِّينَارِand the dinar

And this interpretation which he interpreted for the dirham and the dinar.

لَيْسَis notلَهُhis،,

Is not his.

إِنَّمَاonlyهَذَاthisشَيْءٌsomethingكَانَwasيَتَكَلَّمُhe would speakبِهِwith it

Only this is something that was spoken.

عَبْدُAbdالْأَعْلَىal-A'laالْقَاصُّthe storyteller..

Abd al-A'la the storyteller.

فَكَانَand he wasعَبْدُAbdالْأَعْلَىal-A'laإِذَاwhenقِيلَit was said::

And Abd al-A'la was, when it was said:

«لِمَ"whyسُمِّيَwas namedالْكَلْبُthe dogقَلِيطًا»Qalita?"

"Why was the dog named Qalita?"

؟?

قَالَhe said::

He said:

لِأَنَّهُbecause it«قَلَّ"littleوَلَطَى»and clung"

Because it is 'little and clung'.

وَإِذَاand whenقِيلَit was saidلَهُto him::

And when it was said to him:

لِمَwhyسُمِّيَwas namedالْكَلْبُthe dogسَلُوقِيًّاSaluki

Why was the dog named Saluki?

قَالَhe said::

He said:

لِأَنَّهُbecause it«يَسْتَلُّ"draws outوَيُلْقِي»and throws"

Because it 'draws out and throws'.

وَإِذَاand whenقِيلَit was saidلَهُto him::

And when it was said to him:

لِمَwhyسُمِّيَwas namedالْعُصْفُورُthe sparrowعُصْفُورًاsparrow

Why was the sparrow named sparrow?

قَالَhe said::

He said:

لِأَنَّهُbecause it«عَصَى"disobeyedوَفَرَّ»and fled"

Because it 'disobeyed and fled'.

وَعَبْدُand Abdالْأَعْلَىal-A'laهَذَاthisهُوَhe isالَّذِيthe one who

And this Abd al-A'la is the one who.

كَانَwasيَقُولُhe would sayفِيinقَصَصِهِhis stories::

Would say in his stories:

الْفَقِيرُthe poor manرِدَاؤُهُhis cloakعَلَقَةٌa clot،,

The poor man's cloak is a clot.

وَمَرَقَتُهُand his brothسَلَقَةٌa boiled thing،,

And his broth is a boiled thing.

وَجُرْدَقَتُهُand his breadفِلْقَةٌa piece،,

And his bread is a piece.

وَسَمَكَتُهُand his fishشَلَقَةٌa slice،,

And his fish is a slice.

فِيinطِيبٍpleasantnessلَهُfor himكَثِيرٍmuch

In much pleasantness for him.

وَبَعْضُand someالْمُفَسِّرِينَthe interpretersيَزْعُمُclaimأَنَّthatنُوحًاNoahالنَّبِيَّthe prophetصَلَّىmay he blessاللَّهُGodعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

And some interpreters claim that Noah the prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace.

إِنَّمَاonlyسُمِّيَwas namedنُوحًاNoahلِأَنَّهُbecause heكَانَwasيَنُوحُlamentingعَلَىoverنَفْسِهِhimself

Only was named Noah because he was lamenting over himself.

وَأَنَّand thatآدَمَAdamإِنَّمَاonlyسُمِّيَwas namedآدَمَAdam

And that Adam was only named Adam.

لِأَنَّهُbecause heحُذِيَwas madeمِنْfromأَدِيمٍskinالْأَرْضِof the earth

Because he was made from the skin of the earth.
