«رَأَيْتُI sawالْخُبْزَbreadعَزَّbecame dearلَدَيْكَwith youحَتَّىuntil
"I saw bread become dear with you until..."
قَالَ:He said:
He said:
فَإِذَاSo ifلَمْnotأَعِزَّI honorهَذَاthisالشَّيْءَthingالَّذِيwhichهُوَisقِوَامُthe sustenanceأَهْلِof the peopleالْأَرْضِ،of the earth,
So if I do not honor this thing which is the sustenance of the people of the earth,
وَأَصْلِand the sourceالْأَقْوَاتِ1of foods
and the source of foods ⟦1⟧,
وَأَمِيرِand the princeالْأَغْذِيَةِ،of foods,
and the prince of foods,
فَأَيُّthen whichشَيْءٍthingأَعَزُّ.is dearer?
then which thing is dearer?
أَيْYesوَاللهِ،by God,
Yes, by God,
إِنِّيindeed Iأُعِزُّهُ،honor it,
indeed I honor it,
وَأُعِزُّهُ،and honor it,
and honor it,
وَأُعِزُّهُ،and honor it,
and honor it,
وَأُعِزُّهُ،and honor it,
and honor it,
مُدَىfor the extentالنَّفْسِ،of life,
for the extent of life,
مَاas long asحَمَلَتْcarriedعَيْنِيmy eyeالْمَاءَ.the water.
as long as my eye carries water.
وَبَلَغَAnd it reachedمِنْfromنَفْجِهِhis boastingمَعَwithذَلِكَthat
And it reached from his boasting with that
مَاwhatخَبَّرَنِيtold meبِهِabout itإِبْرَاهِيمُIbrahimبْنُibnهَانِئٍ2Hani'
what Ibrahim ibn Hani' told me about it ⟦2⟧:
قَالَ:He said:
He said:
كُنْتُI wasعِنْدَهُat his placeيَوْمًا،one day,
I was at his place one day,
إِذْwhenمَرَّpassed byبِهِhimبَعْضُsomeالْبَاعَةِ،of the sellers,
when some sellers passed by him,
فَصَاحَ:and he shouted:
and he shouted:
«الْخَوْخُ"Peaches,الْخَوْخُ».peaches!"
"Peaches, peaches!"
فَقُلْتُ:So I said:
So I said:
«وَقَدْ"And hasجَاءَcomeالْخَوْخُthe peachبَعْدُ»؟already?"
"And has the peach come already?"
قَالَ:He said:
He said:
«نَعَمْ"Yes,قَدْindeedجَاءَ،it has come,
"Yes, indeed it has come,
وَقَدْand indeedأَكْثَرْنَاwe have had muchمِنْهُ»،of it,"
and indeed we have had much of it,"
فَدَعَانِيso it called meالْغَيْظُangerعَلَيْهِat him
so anger at him called me
إِلَىtoأَنْthatدَعَوْتُI calledالْبَيَّاعَ،the seller,
to call the seller,
وَأَقْبَلْتُand I turnedعَلَىtoابْنِibnالْخَارِكِيِّ،al-Khariki,
and I turned to ibn al-Khariki,
فَقُلْتُ:and I said:
and I said:
«وَيْحَكَ"Woe to youنَحْنُweلَمْhave notنَسْمَعْheardبِهِof itبَعْدُ،yet,
"Woe to you, we have not heard of it yet,
وَأَنْتَand youقَدْhaveأَكْثَرْتَhad muchمِنْهُ؟of it?
and you have had much of it?
وَقَدْAnd indeedتَعْلَمُyou knowأَنَّthatأَصْحَابَنَاour companionsأَتْرَفُare more luxuriousمِنْكَ»،than you,"
And indeed you know that our companions are more luxurious than you,"
ثُمَّThenأَقْبَلْتُI turnedعَلَىtoالْبَيَّاعِthe seller
Then I turned to the seller
فَقُلْتُ:and said:
and said:
«كَيْفَ"Howتَبِيعُdo you sellالْخَوْخَ؟»the peach?"
"How do you sell the peach?"
فَقَالَ:He said:
He said:
«سِتَّةٌ"Sixبِدِرْهَمٍ».for a dirham."
"Six for a dirham."
قُلْتُ:I said:
I said:
«أَنْتَ"Are youمِمَّنْamong those whoيَشْتَرِيbuyسِتَّsixخَوْخَاتٍpeachesبِدِرْهَمٍ،for a dirham,
"Are you among those who buy six peaches for a dirham,
وَأَنْتَand youتَعْلَمُknowأَنَّهُthat itيُبَاعُwill be soldبَعْدَafterأَيَّامٍdaysمِائَتَيْنِtwo hundredبِدِرْهَمٍ»؟for a dirham?"
and you know that it will be sold after days, two hundred for a dirham?"
ثُمَّThenتَقُولُ:you say:
Then you say:
«وَقَدْ"And indeedأَكْثَرْنَاwe have had muchمِنْهُ،of it,
"And indeed we have had much of it,
وَهَذَاand this oneيَقُولُ:says:سِتَّةٌsixبِدِرْهَمٍ».for a dirham."
and this one says: six for a dirham."
قَالَ:He said:
He said:
«وَأَيُّ"And whatشَيْءٍthingأَرْخَصُis cheaperمِنْthanسِتَّةِsixأَشْيَاءَthingsبِشَيْءٍ».for one thing?"
"And what thing is cheaper than six things for one thing?"
[غُلَامُ[Slave ofصَالِحِSalihبْنِibnعَفَّانَ]Affan]
[Slave of Salih ibn Affan]
كَانَWasغُلَامُthe slaveصَالِحِof SalihبْنِibnعَفَّانَAffan
The slave of Salih ibn Affan was
يَطْلُبُaskingمِنْهُfrom himنَفْطًاoilلِبَيْتِfor the houseالْحِمَارِof the donkeyبِاللَّيْلِ،at night,
asking him for oil for the donkey's house at night,
فَكَانَand he used toيُعْطِيهِgive himكُلَّeveryلَيْلَةٍnightثَلَاثَةَthreeأَفْلُسٍ،fils,
and he used to give him every night three fils,
وَالطَّسُّوجُ3and the tassujأَرْبَعَةُfourفُلُوسٍ.fils.
and the tassuj ⟦3⟧ is four fils.
وَيَقُولُ:And he would say:
And he would say:
طَسُّوجٌA tassujيَفْضُلُexceedsوَحَبَّةٌand a grainتَنْقُصُfalls shortوَبَيْنَهُمَاand between themيَرْمِيshootsالرَّامِي.the shooter.
A tassuj exceeds and a grain falls short, and between them the shooter shoots.
وَكَانَAnd he used toيَقُولُsayلِابْنِهِ:to his son:
And he used to say to his son:
تُعْطِيYou giveصَاحِبَthe ownerالْحَمَّامِof the bathوَصَاحِبَand the ownerالْمُعَبِّرِof the ferry
You give the owner of the bath and the owner of the ferry
لِكُلِّto eachوَاحِدٍoneمِنْهُمَاof themطَسُّوجًا،a tassuj,
to each one of them a tassuj,
وَهُوَand heإِذَاifلَمْnotيَرَhe seesمَعَكَwith youإِلَّاexceptثَلَاثَةَthreeأَفْلُسٍfils
and he, if he does not see with you except three fils
لَمْnotيَرُدَّكَ؟he would turn you back?
would he not turn you back?
