يَعْتَــلِفُeats fodder
He eats fodder.
فَصَاحَthen shoutedبِغُلَامِهِ:to his servant:
Then he shouted to his servant:
«يَاOابْنَson ofأُمِّmy motherبِعْهُsell himوَإِلَّاotherwiseفَهَبْهُgive him awayوَإِلَّاotherwiseفَرُدَّهُreturn himوَإِلَّاotherwiseفَاذْبَحْهُ.slaughter him.
"O son of my mother, sell him, or give him away, or return him, or slaughter him."
أَنَامُI sleepوَلَاand notيَنَامُ؟he sleeps?
Do I sleep while he does not?
يَذْهَبُhe goesبِحَرِّwith the heatمَالِي؟of my wealth?
Does he take away the heat of my wealth?
مَاnotأَرَادَhe wantedإِلَّاexceptاسْتِئْصَالِيmy eradication
He wanted nothing but to eradicate me.

[حَدِيثُstory ofأَبِيAbuالْحَسَنِal-Hasanالْمَدَائِنِيِّal-Mada'ini]
[The story of Abu al-Hasan al-Mada'ini]
قَالَsaidأَبُوAbuالْحَسَنِal-Hasanالْمَدَائِنِيُّ:al-Mada'ini:
Abu al-Hasan al-Mada'ini said:
كَانَthere wasبِالْمَدَائِنِ1in al-Mada'inتَمَّارٌ2a date-seller
There was a date-seller in al-Mada'in (1) (2).
،وَكَانَand it wasغُلَامُهُhis servantإِذَاwhenدَخَلَenteredالْحَانُوتَthe shopيَحْتَالُhe uses tricks
And his servant, whenever he entered the shop, would use tricks.
فَرُبَّمَاand perhapsاحْتَبَسَ3he delayedفَاتَّهَمَهُso he accused himبِأَكْلِof eatingالتَّمْرِ.the dates.
Perhaps he would linger (3), so he accused him of eating the dates.
فَسَأَلَهُthen he asked himيَوْمًاone dayفَأَنْكَرَ،and he denied,
He asked him one day, and he denied it.
فَدَعَاthen he called forبِقُطْنَةٍa piece of cottonبَيْضَاءَ،white,
He called for a white piece of cotton.
ثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:
Then he said:
«امْضَغِيهَاchew it
"Chew it."
»فَمَضَغَهَا،so he chewed it,
So he chewed it.
فَلَمَّاand whenأَخْرَجَهَاhe brought it outوَجَدَhe foundفِيهَاin itحَلَاوَةًsweetnessوَصُفْرَةً.and yellowness.
When he brought it out, he found in it sweetness and yellowness.
قَالَ:he said:
He said:
«هَذَاthisدَأْبُكَ4your habitكُلَّeveryيَوْمٍ،day,
"This is your habit (4) every day.
وَأَنَاand Iلَاnotأَعْلَمُ؟know?
And I do not know?"
أَخْرِجْget outمِنْfromدَارِيmy house
Get out of my house.

وَكَانَand there wasعِنْدَنَاwith usرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromبَنِيthe tribe ofأَسَدٍ،Asad,
There was a man from the tribe of Asad with us.
إِذَاwhenصَعِدَclimbedابْنُson ofالْأَكَّارِthe farmerإِلَىtoنَخْلَةٍa palm treeلَهُ،his,
When the son of the farmer climbed his palm tree,
لِيَلْقُطَto pickلَهُfor himرُطَبًا،ripe dates,مَلَأَhe filledفَاهُhis mouthمَاءً.with water.
He would fill his mouth with water to pick ripe dates for him.
فَسَخِرُواso they mockedبِهِ،him,
They mocked him.
وَقَالُواand they saidلَهُ:to him:
And they said to him:
«إِنَّهُheيَشْرَبُهُdrinks itوَيَأْكُلُand eatsشَيْئًاsomethingعَلَىonالنَّخْلَةِ،the palm tree,
"He drinks it and eats something on the palm tree.
فَإِذَاthen whenأَرَادَhe wantedأَنْtoيَنْزِلَcome downبَالَhe urinatedفِيinيَدِهِ،his hand,
Then when he wants to come down, he urinates in his hand.
ثُمَّthenأَمْسَكَهُhe holds itفِيهِin it»
Then he holds it in it."
وَالرُّطَبُand the ripe datesأَهْوَنُeasierعَلَىforأَوْلَادِthe children ofالْأَكَرَةِ،the farmers,
Ripe dates are easier for the children of farmers,
وَعَلَىand forأَوْلَادِthe children ofغَيْرِother thanالْأَكَرَةِthe farmers
And for the children of non-farmers.
مِنْthanأَنْthatيَحْتَمِلَbearفِيهِin itأَحَدٌanyoneشَطْرَhalfهَذَاthisالْمَكْرُوهِthe detestable thingوَلَاnorبَعْضَهُ.some of it.
Than that anyone should bear half of this detestable thing or even some of it.
قَالَ:he said:
He said:
فَكَانَso he wasبَعْدَهَاafter thatيَمْلَأُhe fillsفَاهُhis mouthمِنْwithمَاءٍwaterأَصْفَرَyellowأَوْorأَخْضَرَ،green,
He said: "So after that he would fill his mouth with yellow or green water,
لِكَيْلَاso that notيَقْدِرَhe canعَلَىonمِثْلِهِsimilar to itفِيinرُؤُوسِthe tops ofالنَّخْلِ.the palm trees.
So that he could not do the like of it in the tops of the palm trees.
[حَدِيثُstory ofالْمِصْرِيِّthe Egyptian]
[The story of the Egyptian]
وَحَدَّثَنِيand told meالْمِصْرِيُّthe Egyptianوَكَانَand he wasجَارَneighbor ofالدَّارِthe houseدِرَيْوِشِي،Dariwishi,
And the Egyptian told me, and he was the neighbor of the house of Dariwishi,
وَمَالُهُand his wealthلَاnotيُحْصَى،counted,
And his wealth was countless.
قَالَ:he said:

فَانْتَهَرَthen he scoldedسَائِلًاa beggarذَاتَoneيَوْمٍdayوَأَنَاand Iعِنْدَهُ،with him,
He scolded a beggar one day while I was with him.
ثُمَّthenوَقَفَstoppedآخَرُanotherفَانْتَهَرَهُ،so he scolded him,
Then another stopped, so he scolded him too.
إِلَّاexceptأَنَّthatذَلِكَthatبِغَيْظٍwith rageوَحَنَقٍ5and fury
Except that was with rage and fury (5).
