وَاللهِBy AllahمَاnotأَدْرِيI knowأَصَادِقٌtruthfulهُوَheأَمْorكَاذِبٌliar

By Allah, I do not know whether he is truthful or a liar.

وَهَاهُنَاAnd hereوَاحِدَةٌoneوَandهِيَitلَكُمْfor youدُونِيinstead of me

And here is one matter: it is for you, not for me.

وَلَاand notبُدَّescapeمِنْfromأَنْthatأَحْتَمِلَI bearلَكُمْfor youإِذْsinceلَمْnotتَحْتَمِلُواyou bearلِيfor me

And there is no escape from my bearing for you, since you did not bear for me.

وَاللهِBy Allahمَاnotمَشَيْتُمْyou walkedمَعَهُwith himإِلَّاexceptوَأَنْتُمْwhile youتُوجِبُونَmake obligatoryحَقَّهُhis rightوَandتُوجِبُونَmake obligatoryرِفْدَهُhis gift

By Allah, you did not walk with him except that you considered his right and his gift obligatory.

لَوْifكُنْتُI wereأُوجِبُI make obligatoryلَهُfor himمِثْلَlikeمَاwhatتُوجِبُونَyou make obligatoryلَقَدْindeedكُنْتُI wasأُغْنِيهِmake him independentعَنْكُمْof you

If I considered obligatory for him what you consider obligatory, I would have made him independent of you.

وَأَنَاAnd Iلَاnotأَعْرِفُهُknow himوَلَاand notيَضْرِبُنِيstrikes meبِحَقٍّwith a right

And I do not know him, nor does he have any claim on me.

فَهَلُمُّواSo comeنَتَوَرَّعْlet us divideهَذِهِthisالفَضْلَةَsurplusبَيْنَنَاbetween usبِالسَّوِيَّةِequally

So come, let us divide this surplus equally among us.

هَذَاthisحَسَنٌgoodمِمَّنْfrom one whoاحْتَمَلَboreحَقًّاa rightلَاnotيَجِبُobligatoryعَلَيْهِupon himفِيinرِضَىsatisfactionمَنْof one whoيَجِبُobligatoryذَلِكَthatعَلَيْهِupon him

This is good from one who bore a right not obligatory upon him, in satisfaction of one upon whom it is obligatory.

فَقَامُواThen they stood upوَلَمْand notيَعُودُواthey returned

Then they stood up and did not return.

فَخَرَجَThen he went outإِلَيْهِto himالتَّاجِرُthe merchantمِنْfromحَقِّهِhis rightوَandأَيِسَhe despairedمِمَّاof whatقَبْلَهُbefore him

So the merchant gave him his due, and despaired of what was before him.

حَدِيثُHadithجَعْفَرٍJa'farعَنْfromأَبِيAbuعُيَيْنَةَUyaynah

Hadith of Ja'far from Abu Uyaynah:

حَدَّثَنِيHe narrated to meجَعْفَرٌJa'farابْنُson ofأُخْتِsister ofوَاصِلٍWasil

Ja'far, the son of the sister of Wasil, narrated to me.

قَالَHe said

He said:

قُلْتُI saidلِأَبِيto AbuعُيَيْنَةَUyaynah

I said to Abu Uyaynah:

قَدْindeedأَحْسَنَdid wellالَّذِيthe one whoسَأَلَaskedاِمْرَأَتَهُhis wifeعَنِaboutاللَّحْمِthe meatفَقَالَتْand she saidأَكَلَهُate itالسِّنَّوْرُthe cat

Indeed, the one who asked his wife about the meat, and she said the cat ate it, did well.

فَوَزَنَThen he weighedالسِّنَّوْرَthe catثُمَّthenقَالَhe said

Then he weighed the cat, then said:

هَذَاthisاللَّحْمُthe meatفَأَيْنَso whereالسِّنَّوْرُthe cat

This is the meat, so where is the cat?

قَالَHe said

He said:

كَأَنَّكَAs if youتَعْرِضُare alludingبِيto me

It is as if you are alluding to me.

قَالَHe said

He said:

قُلْتُI said

I said:

إِنَّكَIndeed youوَاللهِby Allahأَهْلُare worthyذَلِكَof that

Indeed, by Allah, you are worthy of that.

شَيْخٌAn old manقَارَبَnearly reachedالْمِائَةَa hundredوَandغَلَّتُهُhis incomeفَاضِلَةٌabundant

An old man who nearly reached a hundred, and his income is abundant.

وَandعِيَالُهُhis dependentsقَلِيلٌfewوَandيُعْطِيhe givesالْأَمْوَالَmoneyعَلَىforمُذَاكَرَةِdiscussionالْعِلْمِknowledge

And his dependents are few, and he gives money for the discussion of knowledge.

وَandالْعِلْمُknowledgeلَذَّتُهُhis pleasureوَandصِنَاعَتُهُhis craftثُمَّthenيَرْقَىhe ascendsإِلَىtoجَوْفِthe middleمَنْزِلِهِhis house

And knowledge is his pleasure and his craft, then he ascends to the middle of his house.

وَأَنْتَAnd youرَجُلٌa manلَكَyou haveفِيinالْبُسْتَانِthe gardenرَجُلٌa manفِيinأَصْحَابِthe companionsالْفَسِيلِof the palm shootsرَجُلٌa manفِيinالسُّوقِthe market

And you are a man who has a man in the garden, a man among the palm shoot growers, and a man in the market.

    His rifd: his gift and his connection.

  2. 2.وَلَا يَضْرِبُنِي بِحَقٍّ: لَيْسَ لَهُ عِنْدِي حَقٌّ يَجِبُ عَلَيَّ

    And he does not strike me with a right: he has no claim upon me that I must fulfill.

  3. 3.أَيِسَ: يَئِسَ وَقَطَعَ الطَّمَعَ

    Ayisa: he despaired and cut off hope.

  4. 4.أَبُو عُيَيْنَةَ: هُوَ الْفَضْلُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، مِنَ الْمُحَدِّثِينَ

    Abu Uyaynah: he is al-Fadl ibn Uyaynah, one of the hadith narrators.

  5. 5.السِّنَّوْرُ: الْهِرُّ

    The sinnawr: the cat.

  6. 6.غَلَّتُهُ فَاضِلَةٌ: دَخْلُهُ كَثِيرٌ فَائِضٌ عَنْ حَاجَتِهِ

    His ghillah is abundant: his income is plentiful and exceeds his need.

  7. 7.الْفَسِيلُ: صِغَارُ النَّخْلِ، وَأَصْحَابُهُ الَّذِينَ يَعْتَنُونَ بِزِرَاعَتِهِ

    Al-fasil: young palm trees, and its people are those who care for their cultivation.
