قَالَ:He said:
He said:
وَكَانَAnd he wasعَلَىٰin charge ofشُرْطَتِهِhis policeعَبْدُAbdالرَّحْمَٰنِal-RahmanبْنِibnطَارِقٍTariq،,
And in charge of his police was Abd al-Rahman ibn Tariq.
فَقَالَAnd he saidلِرَجُلٍto a manمِنَfromالشُّرَطِthe police::
He said to a man from the police:
«إِنْIfأَقْدَمْتَyou advanceعَلَىٰuponجَدِّيmy grandfatherالْأَمِيرِthe prince،,أَسْقَطْتُI will dropعَنْكَfrom youنَوْبَةَthe tourسَنَةٍ1of the year»..
If you advance upon my grandfather the prince, I will drop from you the tour of duty of the year.
فَبَلَغَهُAnd this reached himذَٰلِكَthat،,فَشَكَاهُso he complained about himإِلَىtoالْحَجَّاجِ2al-Hajjaj،,فَعَزَلَهُso he dismissed him،,وَوَلَّىٰand appointedمَكَانَهُin his placeزِيَادَZiyadبْنَibnجَرِيرٍJarir،,فَكَانَand he wasأَثْقَلَheavierعَلَيْهِupon himمِنْthanعَبْدِAbdالرَّحْمَٰنِal-Rahman..
That reached him, so he complained about him to al-Hajjaj, who dismissed him and appointed Ziyad ibn Jarir in his place, and he was heavier upon him than Abd al-Rahman.
وَلَمْAnd notيَقْدِرْhe was ableعَلَىٰtoعَزْلِهِdismissing him،,إِذْsinceكَانَhe wasقَبْلَbeforeالْحَجَّاجِal-Hajjaj..
And he was not able to dismiss him, since he was before al-Hajjaj.
فَكَانَAnd he wasالْمُغِيرَةُal-Mughiraإِذَاwheneverخَطَبَhe gave a sermonقَالَhe said::
And al-Mughira used to say when he gave a sermon:
«يَاOأَهْلَpeopleالْكُوفَةِof Kufa،,مَنْwhoeverبَغَاكُمُseeks youالْغَوَائِلَ3evils،,وَسَعَىٰand strivesبِكُمْagainst youإِلَىٰtoأَمِيرِكُمْyour prince،,فَلَعَنَهُmay curse himاللَّهُGod،,وَلَعَنَand curseأُمَّهُhis motherالْعَوْرَاءَthe one-eyed»..
O people of Kufa, whoever seeks you evils and strives against you to your prince, may God curse him and curse his one-eyed mother.
وَكَانَتْAnd she wasأُمُّmotherزِيَادٍof Ziyadعَوْرَاءَone-eyed..
And Ziyad's mother was one-eyed.
فَكَانَAnd he wasالنَّاسُthe peopleيَقُولُونَsaying::
And people were saying:
«مَاnotرَأَيْنَاwe have seenتَعْرِيضًاan indirect referenceقَطُّeverأَطْيَبَmore pleasantمِنْthanتَعْرِيضِهِhis indirect reference»..
We have never seen a more pleasant indirect reference than his indirect reference.
قَالُوا:They said:
They said:
وَكَانَAnd there wasلِزِيَادٍfor Ziyadالْحَارِثِيِّal-Harithiجَدْيٌa young goatلَاnotيَمُسُّهُhe touches it،,وَلَاand notيَمُسُّهُtouches itأَحَدٌanyone..
And Ziyad al-Harithi had a young goat that he did not touch, and no one touched it.
فَعَشَّىٰand he gave dinnerفِيinشَهْرِmonthرَمَضَانَRamadanقَوْمًاpeopleفِيهِمْamong themأَشْعَبُAsha'b..
And he gave dinner in the month of Ramadan to people, among them Asha'b.
فَعَرَضَand he targetedأَشْعَبُ4Asha'bلِلْجَدْيِthe young goatمِنْout ofبَيْنِهِمْthem..
And Asha'b targeted the young goat out of them.
فَقَالَSo he saidزِيَادٌZiyad::
So Ziyad said:
«أَمَاindeedلِأَهْلِfor the peopleالسِّجْنِof the prisonإِمَّاifيُصَلِّيhe praysبِهِمْwith them»??
Indeed, for the people of the prison, if he prays with them?
قَالُوا:They said:«لَاNo»..
They said: No.
قَالَHe said::
He said:
«فَلْيُصَلِّso let him prayبِهِمْwith themأَشْعَبُAsha'b»..
So let Asha'b pray with them.
فَقَالَSo he saidأَشْعَبُAsha'b::
So Asha'b said:
«أَوْorغَيْرُotherهَٰذَاthan thisأَصْلَحَmay set rightاللَّهُGodالْأَمِيرَthe prince»..
Or other than this, may God set right the prince?
قَالَHe said::
He said:
«وَمَاAnd whatهُوَis it»??
And what is it?
قَالَHe said::
He said:
أَحْلِفُI swearبِالْمُحَرِّجَاتِ5by the things that make it bindingأَنْthatلَاnotآكُلَI eatلَحْمَmeatجَدْيٍof a young goatأَبَدًاever»..
I swear by the things that make it binding that I will never eat the meat of a young goat.
قَالُوا:They said:
They said:
دَعَاHe invitedعَبْدُAbdالْمَلِكِal-MalikبْنُibnقَيْسٍQaysالذِّئْبِيُّal-Dhi'biرَجُلًاa manمِنْfromأَشْرَافِthe noblesأَهْلِpeopleالْبَصْرَةِof Basra،,وَكَانَand he wasعَبْدُAbdالْمَلِكِal-Malikبَخِيلًاstingyعَلَىٰwithالطَّعَامِfood،,جَوَادًاgenerousبِالدَّرَاهِمِwith dirhams،,
Abd al-Malik ibn Qays al-Dhi'bi invited a man from the nobles of the people of Basra, and Abd al-Malik was stingy with food, generous with dirhams,
