قَالُواThey said::
They said:
«"وَكَانَand he hadلَهُfor himدُكَّانٌa shopلَاnotيَسَعُit accommodatesإِلَّاexceptمَقْعَدَهُhis seat،,
And he had a shop that only accommodated his seat,
وَطِبَاقًا1and a trayيُوضَعُit is placedبَيْنَbetweenيَدَيْهِhis hands..
and a tray [1] placed before him.
وَجَعَلَهُand he made itمُرْتَفِعًاraised/high،,وَلَمْand notيَجْعَلْhe madeلَهُfor itعَتَبًاa step،,كَيْso thatلَاnotيَرْتَقِيَhe climbs upإِلَيْهِto itأَحَدٌanyone..
He made it high, and did not make a step for it, so that no one could climb up to it.
قَالُواThey said::فَكَانَso there wasأَعْرَابِيٌّa Bedouinيَتَحَيَّنُhe watches forوَقْتَهُhis time،,وَيَأْتِيهِand he comes to himعَلَىonفَرَسٍa horse،,فَيَصِيرُso he becomesكَأَنَّهُas if heمَعَهُwith himعَلَىonالدُّكَّانِthe shop..
They said: So there was a Bedouin who would watch for his time and come to him on a horse, and he would become as if he were with him on the shop.
فَأَخَذَso he tookدَبَّةًa waterskin (with water)وَجَعَلَand he madeفِيهَاin itحَصًىpebbles،,وَاتَّكَأَand he leanedعَلَيْهَاon it..
So he took a waterskin, put pebbles in it, and leaned on it.
فَإِذَاso whenرَأَىhe sawالْأَعْرَابِيَّthe Bedouinقَدْindeedأَقْبَلَapproached،,أَرَاهُhe showed himكَأَنَّهُas if heيُحَوِّلُmovesمُتَّكَأَهُhis leaning support،,
So when he saw the Bedouin approaching, he showed him as if he were shifting his support,
فَإِذَاand whenقَعْقَعَتِrattledالدَّبَّةُ2the waterskinبِالْحَصَىwith the pebbles،,نَفَرَshied awayالْفَرَسُthe horse..
And when the waterskin [2] rattled with the pebbles, the horse shied.
قَالُواThey said::فَلَمْand notيَزَلْhe continuedالْأَعْرَابِيُّthe Bedouinيُدَنِّيهِhe brings him near،,وَيُقَعْقِعُand he rattlesهُوَhe himselfبِهِwith it (the waterskin)،,
They said: So the Bedouin kept bringing him near, and he himself kept rattling the waterskin,
حَتَّىuntilنَفَرَshied awayبِهِwith him،,فَصَرَعَهُso it threw him down..
until the horse shied with him, and threw him down.
فَكَانَso he wasلَاnotيَعُودُhe returnsبَعْدَafterذَلِكَthatإِلَيْهِto him..
So he did not return to him after that.

- 1.الطِّبَاقُ: جَمْعُ طَبَقٍ، وَهُوَ إِنَاءٌ مِنْ خَشَبٍ أَوْ نَحْوِهِ يُوضَعُ فِيهِ الطَّعَامُ.
Al-Tibaq: plural of tabaq, which is a wooden or similar vessel in which food is placed.
- 2.الدَّبَّةُ: وِعَاءٌ مِنْ جِلْدٍ يُوضَعُ فِيهِ السَّمْنُ أَوْ نَحْوُهُ.
Al-Dabbah: a leather container in which butter or similar is placed.
