غَيْرَother thanلَذَّةِ1pleasure
Other than pleasure ⟦1⟧.
وَهَلْand doesيَزِيدُincreaseحَالُstateمَنْone whoأَنْفَقَspentجَمِيعَallمَالِهِhis wealth
And does the state of one who spent all his wealth increase
وَرَأَىand sawالْمَكْرُوهَthe disliked thingفِيinعِيَالِهِhis dependents
and saw misfortune in his dependents
وَظَهَرَand appearedفَقْرُهُhis povertyوَشَمِتَand gloatedبِهِat himعَدُوُّهُhis enemy
and his poverty appeared and his enemy gloated over him
عَلَىbeyondأَكْثَرَmoreمِنْthanانْصِرَافِturning awayالْمُؤْنِسِينَthe companionsعَنْهُfrom him
beyond more than the companions turning away from him
وَعَلَىand uponبُغْضِhatredعِيَالِهِ2his dependents
and upon the hatred of his dependents ⟦2⟧
وَعَلَىand uponخُشُونَةِroughnessالْمَلْبَسِthe clothingوَجُشُوبَةِand drynessالْمَأْكَلِ3the food
and upon the roughness of clothing and the dryness of food ⟦3⟧
وَهَذَاand thisكُلُّهُall of itمُجْتَمِعٌgatheredفِيinمَسْكِdwellingالْبَخِيلِ4the miser
And all of this is gathered in the dwelling of the miser ⟦4⟧
وَمَصْبُوبٌand pouredعَلَىuponهَامَةِthe headالشَّحِيحِ5the stingy
and poured upon the head of the stingy ⟦5⟧
وَمُعَجَّلٌand hastenedلِلَّئِيمِfor the ignobleوَمُلَازِمٌand clingingلِلْمَنُوعِto the withholding
and hastened for the ignoble and clinging to the withholding.
إِلَّاexceptأَنَّthatالْمُنْفِقَthe spenderقَدْindeedرَبِحَgainedالْمَحْمَدَةَpraise
But the spender has gained praise
وَتَمَنَّعَand enjoyedبِالنِّعْمَةِthe blessingوَلَمْand notيُعَطِّلْneglectالْمَقْدُرَةَthe ability
and enjoyed the blessing, and did not neglect the ability
وَوَفَّىand fulfilledكُلَّeveryخَصْلَةٍqualityمِنْofهَذِهِtheseحَقَّهَاits due
and fulfilled every quality of these its due
وَوَفَّرَand gave fullyعَلَيْهَاto itنَصِيبَهَاits share
and gave it its full share.
وَالْمُمْسِكُand the withholderمُعَذَّبٌtormentedبِحَصْرِby confiningنَفْسِهِhimself
And the withholder is tormented by confining himself
وَبِالْكَدِّand by strainingلِغَيْرِهِfor othersمَعَwithلُزُومِclingingالْحُجَّةِthe argument
and by straining for others, with clinging to the argument
وَسُقُوطِand fallingالْهِمَّةِaspirationوَالتَّعَرُّضِand exposureلِلذَّمِّto blameوَالْإِهَانَةِand humiliation
and falling of aspiration, and exposure to blame and humiliation
وَمَعَand withتَحْكِيمِgiving authorityالْمُرَّةِthe black bileالسَّوْدَاءِthe blackفِيoverنَفْسِهِ6his soul
and with giving authority to the black bile over his soul ⟦6⟧
وَتَسْلِيطِهَاand letting it dominateعَلَىoverعِرْضِهِhis honorوَتَمْكِينِهَاand empowering itمِنْoverعَيْشِهِhis lifeوَسُرُورِand joyقَلْبِهِhis heart
and letting it dominate his honor, and empowering it over his life and the joy of his heart.
وَلَقَدْand indeedسَرَىpermeatedإِلَيْكَto youعِرْقٌa lineage
And indeed a lineage permeated to you
وَلَقَدْand indeedأَدْخَلَintroducedأَعْرَاقَكَinto your veinsخَوَرٌ7weakness
and indeed weakness introduced into your veins ⟦7⟧
وَلَقَدْand indeedعَمِلَworkedفِيهَاin themقَادِحٌa decay
and indeed a decay worked in them
وَلَقَدْand indeedغَالَهَاdestroyed themغُولٌa destroyer
and indeed a destroyer destroyed them.
وَمَاand notهَذَاthisالْمَذْهَبُthe wayمِنْfromأَخْلَاقِthe moralsصَمِيمِpureثَقِيفٍ8Thaqif
And this way is not from the morals of pure Thaqif ⟦8⟧
وَلَاand notشِيَمِthe traitsأَعْرَقَتْdeep-rootedفِيهَاin itقُرَيْشٌQuraysh
and not the deep-rooted traits of Quraysh in it.
وَلَقَدْand indeedعَرَضَappearedلَكَto youإِقْرَافٌa blemish
And indeed a blemish appeared to you
وَلَقَدْand indeedأَفْسَدَتْكَcorrupted youهِجْنَةٌ9a low origin
and indeed a low origin corrupted you ⟦9⟧.
وَلَقَدْand indeedقَالَsaidمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiya
And indeed Muawiya said:
«مَنْ"Whoeverلَمْnotيَكُنْbeمِنْfromبَنِيthe sons ofعَبْدِAbdالْمُطَّلِبِal-Muttalibجَوَادًاgenerous
"Whoever is not generous from the sons of Abd al-Muttalib
فَهُوَthen heجَمِيلٌhandsome
then he is handsome
وَمَنْand whoeverلَمْnotيَكُنْbeمِنْfromآلِthe family ofالزُّبَيْرِal-Zubayrشُجَاعًاbrave
and whoever is not brave from the family of al-Zubayr
فَهُوَthen heلَزِيقٌ10an attached one
then he is an attached one ⟦10⟧
وَمَنْand whoeverلَمْnot
and whoever does not
