يَكُنْwasمِنْfromبَنِيsons ofالْمُغِيرَةِAl-Mughirahتَيَّاهًاarrogantفَهُوَso he isسُنَيْدٌ1Sunayd
He was from Banu al-Mughirah, arrogant, so he is Sunayd. [1]
وَقَالَAnd saidسَلْمُSalmبْنُson ofقُتَيْبَةَQutaybah
And Salm ibn Qutaybah said:
«إِذَاWhenرَأَيْتَyou seeالثَّقَفِيَّthe Thaqafiيَعِزُّbecomes mightyمِنْfromغَيْرِother thanطَعَامٍ2food
When you see the Thaqafi becoming mighty without food, [2]
وَيَكْسِبُand earnsلِغَيْرِfor other thanإِنْفَاقٍspendingفَبَهْرِجْهُthen deceive himثُمَّthenبَهْرِجْهُdeceive himثُمَّthenبَهْرِجْهُ3deceive him
and earns without spending, then deceive him, then deceive him, then deceive him. [3]
وَقَالَAnd saidابْنُson ofأَبِيAbiبُرْدَةَBurda
And Ibn Abi Burda said:
«لَوْلَاWere it not forشَبَابُyouths ofثَقِيفٍThaqifوَسُفَهَاؤُهُمْand their foolish onesمَاnotكَانَwould have beenلِأَهْلِfor people ofالْبَصْرَةِBasraمَالٌwealth
Were it not for the youths of Thaqif and their foolish ones, the people of Basra would not have wealth.
إِنَّIndeedاللهَAllahجَوَادٌgenerousلَاnotيَبْخَلُHe withholds
Indeed, Allah is generous, He does not withhold,
وَصَدُوقٌand truthfulلَاnotيَكْذِبُHe lies
and truthful, He does not lie,
وَوَفِيٌّand faithfulلَاnotيَغْدِرُHe betrays
and faithful, He does not betray,
وَحَلِيمٌand forbearingلَاnotيَعْجَلُHe hastens
and forbearing, He does not hasten,
وَعَدْلٌand justلَاnotيَظْلِمُHe wrongs
and just, He does not wrong.
وَقَدْAnd indeedأَمَرَنَاHe commanded usبِالْجُودِwith generosityوَنَهَانَاand forbade usعَنِfromالْبُخْلِstinginess
And He commanded us with generosity and forbade us from stinginess,
وَأَمَرَنَاand He commanded usبِالصِّدْقِwith truthfulnessوَنَهَانَاand forbade usعَنِfromالْكَذِبِlying
and He commanded us with truthfulness and forbade us from lying,
وَأَمَرَنَاand He commanded usبِالْحِلْمِwith forbearanceوَنَهَانَاand forbade usعَنِfromالْعَجَلَةِhaste
and He commanded us with forbearance and forbade us from haste,
وَأَمَرَنَاand He commanded usبِالْعَدْلِwith justiceوَنَهَانَاand forbade usعَنِfromالظُّلْمِinjustice
and He commanded us with justice and forbade us from injustice,
وَأَمَرَنَاand He commanded usبِالْوَفَاءِwith faithfulnessوَنَهَانَاand forbade usعَنِfromالْغَدْرِtreachery
and He commanded us with faithfulness and forbade us from treachery.
فَلَمْSo notيَأْمُرْنَاHe command usإِلَّاexceptبِمَاwith whatاخْتَارَهُHe chose itلِنَفْسِهِfor Himself
So He did not command us except with what He chose for Himself,
وَلَمْand notيَزْجُرْنَا4He restrain usإِلَّاexceptعَمَّاfrom whatلَمْnotيَرْضَهُHe approves itلِنَفْسِهِfor Himself
and He did not restrain us [4] except from what He did not approve for Himself.
وَقَدْAnd indeedقَالُواthey saidبِأَجْمَعِهِمْall of them
And they all said:
«إِنَّIndeedاللهَAllahأَجْوَدُthe most generousالْأَجْوَدِينَ5of the generous
Indeed, Allah is the most generous of the generous, [5]
وَأَمْجَدُand the most gloriousالْأَمْجَدِينَof the glorious»
and the most glorious of the glorious.
كَمَاAsقَالُواthey said
As they said:
«ارْحَمْMost mercifulالرَّاحِمِينَof the mercifulوَأَحْسَنَand bestالْخَالِقِينَof the creators
Most merciful of the merciful, and best of the creators.
وَقَالُواAnd they saidفِيinالتَّأْدِيبِthe disciplineلِسَائِلِيهِمْfor their askersوَالتَّعْلِيمِand the teachingلِأَجْوَادِهِمْfor their generous ones
And they said in disciplining their askers and teaching their generous ones:
«لَاDo notتُجَاوِدُواcompete in generosity withاللهَAllahفَإِنَّfor indeedاللهَAllahجَلَّglorifiedذِكْرُهُHis mentionأَجْوَدُmore generousوَأَمْجَدُand more glorious
Do not compete in generosity with Allah, for indeed Allah, glorified be His mention, is more generous and more glorious.
وَذَكَرَAnd He mentionedنَفْسَهُHimselfجَلَّglorifiedجَلَالُهُHis majestyوَتَقَدَّسَتْand sanctifiedأَسْمَاؤُهُHis names
And He mentioned Himself, glorified be His majesty and sanctified be His names,
فَقَالَand said
and said:
«ذُوPossessor ofالْفَضْلِthe bountyالْعَظِيمِthe great
Possessor of the great bounty
وَذِيand Possessor ofالطَّوْلِthe abundanceلَاnoإِلَهَgodإِلَّاexceptهُوَHe
and Possessor of abundance, there is no god except He.
وَقَالَAnd He said
And He said:
«ذُوPossessor ofالْجَلَالِmajestyوَالْإِكْرَامِand honor
Possessor of majesty and honor.
وَذَكَرُواAnd they mentionedالنَّبِيَّthe Prophetصَلَّىmay he blessاللهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant peace
And they mentioned the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فَقَالُواand they said
and they said:
لَمْnotيَضَعْhe placedدِرْهَمًاa dirhamعَلَىuponدِرْهَمٍa dirham
He did not place one dirham upon another dirham,
وَلَاnorلَبِنَةًa brickعَلَىuponلَبِنَةٍa brick
nor a brick upon a brick,
وَمَلَكَand he ruledجَزِيرَةَthe islandالْعَرَبِof the Arabs
and he ruled the Arabian Peninsula,
فَقَبَضَand he collectedالصَّدَقَاتِthe almsوَجُبِيَتْand were collectedلَهُfor himالْأَمْوَالُthe wealth
and he collected the alms, and wealth was collected for him
مَاfromبَيْنَbetweenعَذَارِ6Adharالْعِرَاقِof Iraq
from Adhar [6] of Iraq
إِلَىtoشَحْرِShahrعُمَانَ7Oman
to Shahr of Oman, [7]
إِلَىtoأَقْصَىthe farthestمَخَالِيفِ8districtsالْيَمَنِof Yemen
to the farthest districts [8] of Yemen.
ثُمَّThenتُوُفِّيَhe diedوَعَلَيْهِand upon himدَيْنٌdebtوَدِرْعُهُand his armorمَرْهُونَةٌpledged
Then he died while he owed a debt, and his armor was pledged as collateral.
وَلَمْAnd notيَسْأَلْhe askedحَاجَةًa needقَطُّeverفَقَالَand said
And he never asked for a need and said:
«لَاNo

Sunayd: he was from Banu al-Mughirah, and he was arrogant.

That is, when you see the Thaqafi becoming mighty without food.

Deceive him: trick him and outwit him.
- 4.يَزْجُرْنَا: يَنْهَانَا.
Restrain us: forbid us.
- 5.أَجْوَدُ الْأَجْوَدِينَ: أَكْثَرُهُمْ جُودًا وَكَرَمًا.
The most generous of the generous: the most abundant in generosity and nobility.
- 6.عَذَارٍ: قَرْيَةٌ بِالْعِرَاقِ قُرْبَ الْكُوفَةِ.
Adhar: a village in Iraq near Kufa.
- 7.شَحْرُ عُمَانَ: سَاحِلُ عُمَانَ وَمِينَاؤُهُ.
Shahr of Oman: the coast and port of Oman.
- 8.مَخَالِيفُ: كَوْرٌ، وَاحِدَتُهَا مِخْلَافٌ، وَهِيَ الْكُورَةُ أَوِ النَّاحِيَةُ.
Districts: regions, singular is mikhlaaf, which is a district or area.
