وَيُبْغِضُونَAnd they hateبِفَضْلِdue toبُغْضِهِ1his hatredوَلَدَهُhis child
And they hate his child due to their hatred of him.
وَيَحْتَقِرُونَAnd they despiseبِفَضْلِdue toاحْتِقَارِهِمْtheir contemptلَهُfor himرَهْطَهُhis clan
And they despise his clan due to their contempt for him.
وَيُضِيفُونَAnd they addإِلَيْهِto himمِنْofنَوَادِرِanecdotesاللُّؤْمِof meannessمَاwhatلَمْnotيَبْلُغْهُhe reached
And they add to him anecdotes of meanness that he did not reach.
وَمِنْand ofغَرَائِبِodditiesالْبُخْلِof stinginessمَاwhatلَمْnotيَفْعَلْهُhe did it
And of oddities of stinginess that he did not do.
وَحَتَّىAnd evenضَاعَفُواthey multipliedعَلَيْهِagainst himمِنْofسُوءِevilالثَّنَاءِpraise
And they even multiplied against him evil praise.
بِقَدْرِin proportion toمَاwhatضَاعَفُواthey multipliedلِلْجَوَادِfor the generousمِنْofحُسْنِgoodالثَّنَاءِpraise
In proportion to what they multiplied for the generous of good praise.
وَعَلَىAnd althoughأَنَّاweلَاnotنَجِدُwe findالْجَوَائِحَ2calamities
And although we do not find calamities.
إِلَىtoأَمْوَالِwealthالْأَسْخِيَاءِof the generousأَسْرَحَmore rapidمِنْهَاthan theirإِلَىtoأَمْوَالِwealthالْبُخَلَاءِof the stingy
To the wealth of the generous more rapid than to the wealth of the stingy.
وَلَاAnd notرَأَيْنَاwe sawعَدَدَnumberمَنِof those whoافْتَقَرَbecame poorمِنَamongالْبُخَلَاءِthe stingyأَقَلَّfewer
And we have not seen the number of those who became poor among the stingy to be fewer.
وَالْبَخِيلُAnd the stingyعَنِtowardsالنَّاسِpeopleلَيْسَis notهُوَheالَّذِيthe one whoيَبْخَلُis stingyعَلَىonنَفْسِهِhimselfفَقَطْonly
And the stingy towards people is not the one who is stingy on himself only.
فَقَدْIndeedيَسْتَحِقُّhe deservesعِنْدَهُمْwith themاسْمُthe nameالْبُخْلِof stinginessوَيَسْتَوْجِبُand he meritsالذَّمَّblame
Indeed, he deserves with them the name of stinginess and merits blame.
مَنْhe whoلَاnotيَدَعُleavesلِنَفْسِهِfor himselfهَوًىdesireإِلَّاexceptرَكِبَهُhe pursued it
He who does not leave a desire for himself except he pursues it.
وَلَاand notحَاجَةًneedإِلَّاexceptقَضَاهَاhe fulfilled it
And no need except he fulfills it.
وَلَاand notشَهْوَةًappetiteإِلَّاexceptرَكِبَهَاhe pursued itوَبَلَغَand reachedفِيهَاin itغَايَتَهَاits utmost
And no appetite except he pursues it and reaches its utmost.
وَإِنَّمَاBut onlyيَقَعُfallsعَلَيْهِupon himاسْمُthe nameالْبَخِيلِof the stingy
But only the name of the stingy falls upon him.
إِذَاwhenكَانَhe isزَاهِدًاabstinentفِيinكُلِّeverythingمَاthatأَوْجَبَobligatedالشُّكْرَgratitude
When he is abstinent in everything that obligates gratitude.
وَنَوَّهَand elevatedبِالذِّكْرِthe mentionوَأَذْخَرَand storedالْأَجْرَreward
And elevates the mention and stores reward.
وَقَدْAnd indeedيُعَلِّقُ3he hangsالْبَخِيلُthe stingyعَلَىuponنَفْسِهِhimselfمِنَofالْمُؤَنِexpenses
And indeed the stingy hangs upon himself of expenses.
وَيُلْزِمُهَاand imposes on himselfمِنَofالْكُلَفِburdens
And imposes on himself of burdens.
وَيَتَّخِذُand he takesمِنَofالْجَوَارِيmaidensوَالْخَدَمِand servants
And he takes of maidens and servants.
وَمِنَand ofالدَّوَابِّriding animalsوَالْحَشَمِand retinue
And of riding animals and retinue.
وَمِنَand ofالْآنِيَةِvesselsالْعَجِيبَةِwonderful
And of wonderful vessels.
وَمِنَand ofالْبَزَّةِapparelالْفَاخِرَةِluxuriousوَالشَّارَةِand appearanceالْحَسَنَةِgood
And of luxurious apparel and good appearance.
مَاwhatيُرْبِي4exceedsعَلَىoverنَفَقَةِexpenditureالسَّخِيِّof the generousالْمُثْرِيwealthy
What exceeds over the expenditure of the wealthy generous.
وَيَضْعُفُand exceedsعَلَىoverجُودِgenerosityالْجَوَادِof the munificentالْكَرِيمِnoble
And exceeds over the generosity of the munificent noble.
فَيَذْهَبُSo his wealth goesمَالُهُhis wealthوَهُوَwhile he isمَذْمُومٌblamed
So his wealth goes while he is blamed.
وَيَتَغَيَّرُand his condition changesحَالُهُhis conditionوَهُوَwhile he isمَلُومٌcensured
And his condition changes while he is censured.
وَرُبَّمَاAnd perhapsغَلَبَovercameعَلَيْهِhimحُبُّloveالْقِيَانِ5of singing girls
And perhaps the love of singing girls overcame him.
وَاسْتَهْتَرَand he was infatuatedبِالْخِصْيَانِ6with eunuchs
And he was infatuated with eunuchs.
وَرُبَّمَاAnd perhapsأَفْرَطَexceededفِيinحُبِّloveالصَّيْدِof hunting
And perhaps he exceeded in love of hunting.
وَاسْتَوْلَىand dominatedعَلَيْهِhimحُبُّloveالْمَرَاكِبِof riding
And the love of riding dominated him.
وَرُبَّمَاAnd perhapsكَانَwasإِتْلَافُهُhis squanderingفِيinالْعُرْسِweddingوَالْخُرْسِ7and feast
And perhaps his squandering was in wedding and feast.
