شَهِدْتُI witnessedوَفَاتُونِيand they diedوَكُنْتُand I wasحَسِبْتُنِيI thought myselfفَقِيرًاpoorإِلَىtoأَنْthatيَشْهَدُواthey witnessوَتَغِيبِي1and you are absent
I witnessed their deaths, and I thought I was poor until they witnessed and you were absent. [1]
أَعَاذِلَO blaming womanإِنْifيَصْبَحْbecomes in the morningصَدَايَmy echoبِقَفْرَةٍin a desolate landبَعِيدًاfarنَآنِيfar from meصَاحِبِيmy companionوَقَرِيبِي2and my relative
O blaming woman, if my echo becomes in a desolate land, far away, my companion and my relative have gone far from me. [2]
تَرَىYou seeأَنَّthatمَاwhatأَبْقَيْتُI keptلَمْnotأَكُI beرَبَّهُits ownerوَأَنَّand thatالَّذِيwhichأَمْضَيْتُI spentكَانَwasنَصِيبِي3my share
You see that what I kept, I was not its owner, and that what I spent was my share. [3]
وَذِيAnd possessor ofإِبِلٍcamelsيَسْعَىstrivesوَيَحْسَبُهَاand counts themلَهُfor himأَخِيmy brotherنَصَبٍtoilفِيinسَقْيِهَاwatering themوَدُءُوبٍ4and persistence
And a man with camels who strives and counts them as his, my brother is in toil in watering them and persistent. [4]
غَدَتْwent in the morningوَغَدَاand went in the morningرَبٌّa lordسِوَاهُother than himيَسُوقُهَاdrives themوَبَدَّلَand he exchangedأَحْجَارًاstonesوَجَالَand he roamedقَلِيبٌ5a well
They went in the morning and a lord other than him drove them, and he exchanged stones and roamed a well. [5]
وَقَالَAnd he saidأَيْضًا:also:
And he also said:
قَامَتْShe stoodتَبَاكَىweepingإِنْifسَبَأْتُI boughtلِفِتْيَةٍfor young menزِقًّاa wineskinوَخَابِيَةًand a jarبِعُودٍwith a stickمُقَطَّعِ6cut
She stood weeping if I bought for young men a wineskin and a jar with a cut stick. [6]
وَقَرَيْتُAnd I hostedفِيinمَقْرًىa place of hospitalityقَلَائِصَyoung she-camelsأَرْبَعًاfourوَقَرَيْتُand I hostedبَعْدَafterقِرًىhospitalityقَلَائِصَyoung she-camelsأَرْبَعِ7four
And I hosted in a place of hospitality four young she-camels, and after that hospitality I hosted four young she-camels. [7]
أَتَبْكِيَانِDo you two weepمِنْforكُلِّeveryشَيْءٍthingهَيِّنٍtrivialسَفَهًاfoolishlyبُكَاءَthe weeping ofالْعَيْنِthe eyeمَاas long asلَمْnotتَدْمَعِ8it does not shed tears
Do you two weep for every trivial thing foolishly, the weeping of the eye as long as it does not shed tears? [8]
فَإِذَاAnd whenأَتَانِيmy brothers came to meإِخْوَتِيmy brothersفَدَعِيهِمْthen leave themيَتَعَلَّلُواlet them amuse themselvesفِيinالْعَيْشِlifeأَوْorيَلْهُواlet them playمَعِي9with me
And when my brothers come to me, then leave them, let them amuse themselves in life or play with me. [9]
لَاDo notتَطْرُدِيهِمْdrive them awayعَنْfromفِرَاشِيmy bedإِنَّهُindeed itلَاnoبُدَّescapeيَوْمًاone dayأَنْthatسَيَخْلُوwill become emptyمَضْجَعِي10my resting place
Do not drive them away from my bed, indeed there is no escape that one day my resting place will become empty. [10]
