هَلَاDid notسَأَلْتَyou askبِعَادِيَاءَabout the place of 'Adiya'وَبَيْتِهِand his houseوَالْخَيْلِand the horsesوَالْخَمْرِand the wineالَّتِيwhichلَمْdid notتُمْنَعِ1it was prevented
Did you not ask about 'Adiya's place and his house, and the horses and wine that were not withheld?
وَقَالَAnd saidالْحَارِثُAl-Harithبْنُson ofحِلِّزَةَ2Hilliza
And Al-Harith ibn Hilliza said:
بَيْنَاWhileالْفَتَىthe young manيَسْعَىstrivesوَيُسْعَىand it is strivenلَهُfor himتَاحَbefellلَهُto himمِنْfromأَمْرِهِhis affairخَالِجٌ3a turning away
While the young man strives and others strive for him, there befell him from his affair a turning away.
يَتْرُكُHe leavesمَاwhatرَقَّحَhe improvedمِنْofعَيْشِهِhis lifeيَعِيثُit ravagesفِيهِin itهَمَجٌa mobهَامِجٌ4confused
He leaves what he improved of his life; a confused mob ravages in it.
لَاDo notتَكْسَعِkickالشُّوْلَthe she-camelsبِأَغْبَارِهَاwith their tailsإِنَّكَindeed youلَاdo notتَدْرِيknowمِنَwhoالنَّاتِجِ5the one who produces offspring
Do not kick the she-camels with their tails; indeed you do not know who produces offspring (i.e., the father).
وَقَالَAnd saidالْهُذَلِيُّthe HudhaliإِنَّIndeedالْكِرَامَthe generousمَنَاهِبُوare plunderersكَof youالْمَجْدَgloryكُلُّهُمْall of themفَنَاهِبُ6and plunderer
And the Hudhali said: Indeed the generous ones are plunderers of glory from you; all of them plunder.
أَخْلَفَHe broke (promise)وَأَتْلَفَand destroyedكُلُّeveryشَيْءٍthingذَرَعَتْهُthat has wovenالرِّيحُthe windذَاهِبٌ7is going away
He broke (promise) and destroyed; every thing that the wind has woven is going away.
وَقَالَتِAnd saidامْرَأَةٌa womanأَنْتَYouوَهَبْتَgaveالْفَتِيَّةَthe young (fem.)السَّلَاهِبَthe swift (she-camels)وَإِبِلًاand camelsيَحَارُis bewilderedفِيهَاin themالْحَالِبُ8the milker
And a woman said: You gave the swift young she-camels and camels in which the milker is bewildered.
وَغَنَمًاAnd sheepمِثْلَlikeالْجَرَادِthe locustsالْهَارِبِfleeingمَتَاعُenjoymentأَيَّامٍof daysوَكُلُّand everyذَاهِبٌ9going away
And sheep like fleeing locusts; enjoyment of days, and everything is going away.

Ash-shūl: she-camels whose milk has dried up and whose tails have withered; an-nātij: the one who produces them from fathers.
- 6.مَنَاهِبُو: جَمْعُ مَنْهَبٍ، وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَنْهَبُ.
Manāhibū: plural of manhab, meaning plunderer.
- 7.ذَرَعَتْهُ: نَسَجَتْهُ.
Dhara'at-hu: woven it.
- 8.السَّلَاهِبُ: السِّرَاعُ.
As-salāhib: the swift ones.
- 9.مَتَاعُ أَيَّامٍ: تَمْتِيعٌ وَقْتِيٌّ.
Mattā' ayyām: temporary enjoyment.
