فَارِسٌa knightبِالْبَارِدِwith the coldوَالْحُلْوِand the sweet

A knight with cold and sweet.

وَقَالَand he saidعُمَرُUmar

And Umar said:

لِفَارِسَto Farisالشَّفَارِقُ1the sharpوَالْحُمُوضُ2and the sour

To Faris, the sharp and the sour.

وَقَالَand he saidدَوْسَرُDawsarالْمَدِينِيُّthe Madani

And Dawsar al-Madani said:

لَنَاfor usالْهَرَائِسُthe hashوَالْقَلَايَاand the friedوَلِأَهْلِand for the peopleالْبَدْوِof the desertاللِّبَأُcolostrumوَالسَّلَاءُand the fetusوَالْجَرَادُand locustsوَالْكَمْأَةُand trufflesوَالْخُبْزَةُ3and the loafفِيinالرَّائِبِcurdled milkوَالتَّمْرُand datesبِالزُّبْدِwith butter

For us is hash and fried, and for the desert dwellers is colostrum, fetus, locusts, truffles, and a loaf in curdled milk, and dates with butter.

وَقَدْand indeedقَالَhe saidالشَّاعِرُthe poet

And indeed the poet said:

أَلَاbeholdلَيْتَif onlyخُبْزًاbreadقَدْalreadyتَسَرْبَلَclothed himselfرَائِبًاcurdled milk......

If only bread had been clothed with curdled milk...

وَخَيْلًاand horsesمِنْfromالْبُرْنِيِّthe Barni datesفُرْسَانُهَاtheir knightsالزُّبْدُ4butter

And horses of Barni dates, their knights are butter.

وَلَهُمُand for themالْبَرِيقَةُal-Bariqaوَالْخُلَاصَةُand al-Khulasaوَالْحَيْسُand al-Haysوَالْوَطِيئَةُand al-Wati'a

And for them are al-Bariqa, al-Khulasa, al-Hays, and al-Wati'a.

وَقَالَand he saidأَعْرَابِيٌّa Bedouin

And a Bedouin said:

أَتَيْنَاwe cameبِبُرٍّwith wheatكَأَفْوَاهِlike the mouthsالنِّغْرَانِ5of the young birds

We came with wheat like the mouths of young birds.

فَخَبَزْنَاso we bakedمِنْهُfrom itخُبْزَةًa loafزَيْتٍof oilفِيinالنَّارِthe fire

And we baked from it a loaf of oil in the fire.

فَجَعَلَand it madeالْجَمْرُthe embersيَتَحَدَّرُfall downعَنْهَاfrom itتَحَدُّرَthe descentالْحَشْوِof the stuffingعَنِfromالْبُطْنَانِ6the bellies

And the embers fell off it like the descent of stuffing from the bellies.

ثُمَّthenثَرَدَهَاhe crumbled itفَجَعَلَand he madeالثَّرِيدُthe tharidيَجُولُcirculateفِيinالْإِهَالَةِthe brothجَوَلَانَthe circulationالضَّبْعَانِ7of the hyenaفِيinالضَّفْرَةِ89the thicket

Then he crumbled it, and the tharid circulated in the broth like the circulation of the hyena in the thicket.

ثُمَّthenأَتَانَاhe brought usبِتَمْرٍwith datesكَأَعْنَاقِlike the necksالْوَرَلَانِ10of the monitor lizards

Then he brought us dates like the necks of monitor lizards.

يُوحِلُit gets stuckفِيهِin itالضِّرْسُthe molar

In which the molar gets stuck.

وَعِيبَand it was criticizedالسَّوِيقُ11the sawiqبِحَضْرَةِin the presence ofأَعْرَابِيٍّa Bedouin

And sawiq was criticized in the presence of a Bedouin.

فَقَالَand he saidلَاdo notتَعِبْهُcriticize it

And he said: 'Do not criticize it,

فَإِنَّهُfor it isمِنْofعُدَدِthe provisionsالْمُسَافِرِof the travelerوَطَعَامُand foodالْعَجْلَانِof the hastyوَغِذَاءُand nourishment

for it is among the provisions of the traveler, the food of the hasty, and the nourishment
