الْخِطَابُThe address
The address.
كَانَused toعُمَرُUmarبْنُson ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattabرَحْمَةُmercyاللَّهِof Allahعَلَيْهِupon himوَرِضْوَانُهُand His approvalيَضْرِبُstrikesعَلَىuponهَذَاthis
Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah's mercy and approval be upon him, used to strike (as a punishment) for this.
وَكَانَand he used toيَقُولُsayمُدْمِنُaddictاللَّحْمِof meatكَمُدْمِنِlike addictالْخَمْرِof wine
And he used to say: 'The addict of meat is like the addict of wine.'
ثُمَّThenسَأَلَhe askedالَّذِيthe one whoيَلِيهِfollows him
Then he asked the one who was next to him.
قَالَHe saidأَبَاO father ofفُلَانٍso-and-soمَاwhatإِدَامُكَ1is your condiment
He said: 'O father of so-and-so, what is your condiment?'
قَالَHe saidالْآدَامُthe condimentsالْكَثِيرَةُmanyوَالْأَلْوَانُand the colorsالطَّيِّبَةُpleasant
He said: 'Many condiments and pleasant colors.'
قَالَHe saidأَفِيIs inإِدَامِكَyour condimentسَمْنٌbutter (ghee)
He said: 'Is there butter in your condiment?'
قَالَHe saidنَعَمْyes
He said: 'Yes.'
قَالَHe saidفَتَجْمَعُDo you gatherالسَّمْنَthe butterوَالسَّمِينَand the fatty (meat)عَلَىonمَائِدَةٍa table
He said: 'Do you gather the butter and the fatty meat on a table?'
قَالَHe saidنَعَمْyes
He said: 'Yes.'
قَالَHe said
He said:
لَيْسَIs notهَذَاthisعَيْشُlivingآلِof family ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattab
'This is not the living of the family of Al-Khattab.'
كَانَused toابْنُson ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattabرَحْمَةُmercyاللَّهِof Allahعَلَيْهِupon himوَرِضْوَانُهُand His approvalيَضْرِبُstrikesعَلَىuponهَذَاthis
Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah's mercy and approval be upon him, used to strike for this.
وَكَانَAnd he used toإِذَاwhenوَجَدَfindالْقُدُورَthe potsالْمُخْتَلِفَةَvariedالطُّعُومِin tastesكَدَّرَهَاmixed themفِيinقِدْرٍa potوَاحِدَةٍone
And when he found pots with varied tastes, he mixed them into one pot.
وَقَالَAnd he saidإِنَّIndeedالْعَرَبَthe Arabsلَوْifأَكَلَتْateهَذَاthisلَقَتَلَwould killبَعْضُهَاsome of themبَعْضًاothers
And he said: 'If the Arabs ate this, some of them would kill others.'
ثُمَّThenيُقْبِلُhe turnsعَلَىtoالْآخَرِthe otherفَيَقُولُand says
Then he turns to the other and says:
أَبَاO father ofفُلَانٍso-and-soمَاwhatإِدَامُكَis your condiment
'O father of so-and-so, what is your condiment?'
قَالَHe saidاللَّحْمُthe meatلِسَمِينِfatوَالْجِدَاءُand the young goatsالرُّضَّعُsuckling
He said: 'Fat meat and suckling young goats.'
قَالَHe saidفَتَأْكُلُهُDo you eat itبِالْحُوَّارَى2with white (fine bread)
He said: 'Do you eat it with fine white bread?'
قَالَHe saidنَعَمْyes
He said: 'Yes.'
قَالَHe saidلَيْسَIs notهَذَاthisعَيْشُlivingآلِof family ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattab
He said: 'This is not the living of the family of Al-Khattab.'
كَانَused toابْنُson ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattabيَضْرِبُstrikesعَلَىuponهَذَاthis
Ibn Al-Khattab used to strike for this.
أَوْOrمَاnotسَمِعْتَهُdid you hear himيَقُولُsay
Or did you not hear him saying:
أَتَرُونِيDo you see meلَاnotأَعْرِفُI knowالطَّعَامَthe foodالطَّيِّبَgood
'Do you see me as not knowing good food?'
لُبَابُThe coreالْبُرِّof wheatبِصِغَارِwith smallالْمَعْزَىgoats
The core of wheat with small goats.
أَلَاDoes notتَرَاهُyou see himكَيْفَhowيَنْتَفِيhe disownsمِنْfromأَكْلِهِeating itوَتَحْتَلُand claimsمَعْرِفَتَهُhis knowledge of it
Do you not see how he disowns eating it, yet claims knowledge of it?
ثُمَّThenيُقْبِلُhe turnsعَلَىtoالَّذِيthe one whoيَلِيهِfollows himفَيَقُولُand says
Then he turns to the one next to him and says:
أَبَاO father ofفُلَانٍso-and-soمَاwhatأَدْمُكَis your condiment
'O father of so-and-so, what is your condiment?'
فَيَقُولُso he says
So he says:
أَكْثَرُMostمَاof whatنَأْكُلُwe eatلُحُومُmeatsالْجُزُورِof camelsوَنَتَّخِذُand we makeمِنْهَاfrom themهَذِهِtheseالْقَلَايَاfried piecesوَنَجْعَلُand we makeبَعْضَهَاsome of themشِوَاءًroasted
Most of what we eat is camel meat, and we make from it these fried pieces, and some of it we make roasted.
قَالَHe saidأَفَتَأْكُلُDo you eatمِنْfromأَكْبَادِهَاits liversوَأَسْنِمَتِهَاand its humpsوَتَتَّخِذُand takeلَكَfor yourselfالصِّبَاغَ3the dips
He said: 'Do you eat from its livers and its humps, and take for yourself the dips?'
قَالَHe saidنَعَمْyes
He said: 'Yes.'
قَالَHe saidلَيْسَIs notهَذَاthisعَيْشُlivingآلِof family ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattab
He said: 'This is not the living of the family of Al-Khattab.'
كَانَused toابْنُson ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattabيَضْرِبُstrikesعَلَىuponهَذَاthis
Ibn Al-Khattab used to strike for this.
أَوْOrمَاnotسَمِعْتَهُdid you hear himيَقُولُsay
Or did you not hear him saying:
أَتَرُونِيDo you see meلَاnotأَقْدِرُI am ableأَنْtoأَتَّخِذَmakeأَكْبَادًاliversوَأَفْلَاذًاand kidneysوَصَلَائِقَand slicesوَصِنَابًا456and mustard
'Do you see me not able to make livers, kidneys, slices, and mustard?'
أَلَاDoes notتَرَاهُyou see himكَيْفَhowيُنْكِرُhe deniesأَكْلَهُhis eatingوَيَسْتَحْسِنُand considers goodمَعْرِفَتَهُhis knowledge of it
Do you not see how he denies eating it, yet considers his knowledge of it good?

Condiment: what is eaten with bread.
- 2.الْحُوَّارَى: الْخُبْزُ الْأَبْيَضُ الْمُنَخَّلُ.
Al-Huwwara: white sifted bread.
- 3.الصِّبَاغُ: مَا يُغْمَسُ فِيهِ الْخُبْزُ مِنْ خَلٍّ وَنَحْوِهِ.
Dip: something in which bread is dipped, such as vinegar and similar.
- 4.الْأَفْلَاذُ: جَمْعُ فِلْذٍ، وَهُوَ قِطْعَةُ الطِّحَالِ وَالْكَبِدِ.
Afladh: plural of filth, which is a piece of spleen and liver.
- 5.الصَّلَائِقُ: جَمْعُ صَلِيقَةٍ، وَهِيَ اللَّحْمُ الَّذِي يُطْبَخُ بِالْحَوَارَى أَوْ نَحْوِهِ.
Sala'iq: plural of saliqa, which is meat cooked with white bread or similar.
- 6.الصِّنَابُ: خَلٌّ بِالْخَرْدَلِ يُغْمَسُ فِيهِ اللَّحْمُ.
Sinab: vinegar with mustard in which meat is dipped.
