لَمْnotتَأْكُلِeatالفَثَّthe colocynthوَandالدُّعَاعَthe dwarf plantsوَandلَمْnot......تَجْنِgatherهَبِيدًاthe colocynth seedsيَجْنِيهِgathers itمُهْتَبِدُهُthe one who gathers it

They did not eat colocynth or dwarf plants, nor did they gather colocynth seeds as the one who gathers them does.

قَالَsaidأُمَيَّةُUmayyaابْنُson ofأَبِيAbiالصَّلْتِ1as-Salt

Umayya ibn Abi as-Salt said:

وَandلَاnotيَتَنَازَعُونَthey contendعِنَانَthe reinشِرْكٍpolytheismوَandلَاnorأَقْوَاتِthe provisionsأَهْلِهِمْof their peopleالعَسُومُthe wandering

And they do not contend for the rein of polytheism, nor for the provisions of their wandering people.

وَandلَاnorقِرْدٌa monkeyيَقْزَزُis disgustedمِنْfromطَعَامٍfoodوَandلَاnorنَصَبٌafflictionوَandلَاnorمَوْلًىa clientعَدِيمٌdestitute

Nor is there a monkey disgusted with food, nor affliction, nor a destitute client.

وَandقَالَsaidمُعَاوِيَةُMu'awiyaابْنُson ofأَبِيAbiرَبِيعَةَRabi'aالجَرْمِيُّthe Jarmiفِيinالقُرَّةِthe al-qurraوَandهُوَheيُعَيِّرُis rebukingبَنِيsons ofأَسَدٍAsadوَandنَاسًاpeopleمِنْfromهَوَازِنَ2Hawazinوَandهُمَاthey twoابْنَاsons ofالقَمْلِيَةِ3al-Qamliya

Mu'awiya ibn Abi Rabi'a al-Jarmi said regarding al-qurra, rebuking Banu Asad and some people from Hawazin — they are the two sons of al-Qamliya:

أَلَمْdid notتَرَyou seeجَرْمًاJarmأَنْجَدَتْwent to Najdوَandأَبُوكُمْyour fatherمَعَwithالقَمْلِliceفِيinحَفْرِthe diggingالأَقَيْصِرِal-Uqaysirشَارِعُ4standing

Did you not see Jarm went to Najd, while your father with lice in the digging of al-Uqaysir stands?

إِذَاwhenقُرَّةٌa qurraجَاءَتْcameيَقُولُhe saysأَصِبْfindبِهَاwith itسِوَىother thanالقَمْلِliceإِنِّيindeed IمِنْfromهَوَازِنَHawazinضَارِعُ5humiliated

When a qurra came, he says: 'Find for me something other than lice, for I am from Hawazin, humiliated.'

وَand«القُرَامَةُ»al-qurāma::نُحَاتَةُthe scrapingsالقُرُونِof hornsوَandالأَظْلَافِhoovesوَandالمَنَاسِمِclawsوَandبُرَادَتُهَاtheir filings

And al-qurāma: the scrapings of horns, hooves, and claws, and their filings.

وَand«العَلْهَزُ»al-'alhaz::القِرْدَانُthe ticksتُرَضُّare crushedوَandتُعْجَنُare kneadedبِالدَّمِ6with blood

And al-'alhaz: ticks that are crushed and kneaded with blood.

وَand«القُرَّةُ»al-qurra::الدَّقِيقُthe flourالمُخْتَلِطُmixedبِالشَّعْرِwith hairكَانَwasالرَّجُلُthe manمِنْهُمْamong themلَاnotيَحْلِقُhe shavesرَأْسَهُhis headإِلَّاexceptعَلَىonرَأْسِهِhis headقَبْضَةٌa handfulمِنْofدَقِيقٍflourلِيَكُونَto beصَدَقَةًcharityعَلَىuponالضَّرَائِكِthe poorوَandطُهُورًاpurificationلَهُfor him

And al-qurra: flour mixed with hair. A man among them would not shave his head except with a handful of flour on his head, to be charity for the poor and purification for him.

فَمَنْso whoeverأَخَذَtookذَلِكَthatالدَّقِيقَflourلِلْأَكْلِfor eatingفَهُوَthen heمُعَيَّبٌis blamed

Whoever took that flour for eating is blamed.

وَandفِيinأَكْلِeatingالحَيَّاتِsnakesيَقُولُsaysابْنُson ofمُنَاذِرَMunadhir

And regarding eating snakes, Ibn Munadhir says:

فَإِيَّاكُمْbewareوَandالرِّيفَthe fertile landلَاnotتَقْرَبُنَّهُapproach itفَإِنَّfor indeedلَدَيْهِwith himالحَتْفَdeathوَandالمَوْتَdeathقَاضِيَاdeciding

Beware of the fertile land, do not approach it, for with it is death and fate deciding.

وَandهُمْtheyطَرَدُوكُمْexpelled youعَنْfromبِلَادِlandsأَبِيكُمْof your fatherوَandأَنْتُمْyouحُلُولٌdwellersتَشْتَوُونَyou winterالأَفَاعِيَاthe vipers

While they expelled you from your father's lands, and you dwell wintering among vipers.

    Ad-Dari' means humiliated.

  6. 6.العَلْهَزُ: هُوَ القِرْدَانُ الَّذِي يُجَفَّفُ وَيُدَقُّ وَيُخْلَطُ بِالدَّمِ وَيُؤْكَلُ فِي المَجَاعَةِ.

    Al-'alhaz is the ticks that are dried, pounded, mixed with blood, and eaten in famine.
