وَآثَرْتُهُand I preferred himلَمَّاwhenرَأَيْتُI sawالَّذِيthat whichبِهِwith himعَلَىoverالنَّفْسِthe selfأَخْشَىI fearلَاحِقَاتِthe consequencesالْمَلَاوِمِ1of reproaches
And I preferred him, when I saw what was in him, over myself, fearing the consequences of reproaches.
فَجَاءَthen he cameبِجَلْمُودٍwith a hard rockلَهُfor himمِثْلُlikeرَأْسِهِhis headلِيَشْرَبَto drinkحَظَّthe shareالْقَوْمِof the peopleبَيْنَamongالصَّرَائِمِ2the sharp rocks
Then he came with a rock like his head to drink the people's share among the sharp rocks.
وَقَدْand indeedيُصِيبُafflictsالْقَوْمَthe peopleفِيinبَادِيَتِهِمْtheir desertوَمَوَاضِعِهِمْand their placesمِنَofالْجَهْدِhardshipمَاwhatلَمْnotيُسْمَعْis heardبِهِof itفِيinأُمَّةٍa nationمِنَofالْأُمَمِthe nationsوَلَاnorفِيinنَاحِيَةٍa regionمِنَofالنَّوَاحِيthe regions
And indeed hardship afflicts the people in their desert and their places, such as has not been heard of in any nation or any region.
وَأَنَّand thatأَحَدَهُمْone of themلَيَجُوعُhungersحَتَّىuntilيَشُدَّhe tiesعَلَىonبَطْنِهِhis bellyالْحِجَارَةَthe stonesوَحَتَّىand untilيَعْتَصِمُhe clingsبِشِدَّةِto the tightnessمَعَاقِدِof the knotsالْإِزَارِ3of the waistcloth
And one of them hungers so much that he ties stones on his belly, and clings to the tightness of the knots of his waistcloth.
وَيَنْزِعُand he removesعِمَامَتَهُhis turbanمِنْfromرَأْسِهِhis headفَيَشُدُّand tiesبِهَاwith itبَطْنَهُhis belly
And he removes his turban from his head and ties his belly with it.
وَإِنَّمَاbutعِمَامَتُهُhis turbanتَاجُهُhis crownوَالْأَعْرَابِيُّand the Bedouinيَجِدُfindsفِيinرَأْسِهِhis headمِنَofالْبَرْدِcoldإِذَاwhenكَانَhe isحَاسِرًا4bare-headed
But his turban is his crown, and the Bedouin finds in his head, when bare-headed, more cold than anyone else does, because of his long habit of wearing it and its many folds and layers.
مَاwhatلَاnotيَجِدُهُhe finds itأَحَدٌanyoneلِطُولِdue to longمُلَازَمَتِهِhis stickinessالْعِمَامَةَthe turbanوَلِكَثْرَةِand due to manyطَيِّهَاits foldingوَتَضَاعُفِand multiplicationأَثْنَائِهَاof its folds
What no one else finds, due to his long stickiness to the turban and its many folds and layers.
وَلَرُبَّمَاand perhapsاعْتَمَّhe wore a turbanبِعِمَامَتَيْنِwith two turbansوَلَرُبَّمَاand perhapsكَانَتْit wasعَلَىonقَلَنْسُوَةٍa capخُدَرِيَّةٍ5Khidariyyah
And perhaps he wore two turbans, and perhaps it was over a Khidariyyah cap.
وَقَالَand saidمُصْعَبُMus'abبْنُson ofعُمَيْرٍUmairاللَّيْثِيُّal-Laithi
And Mus'ab ibn Umair al-Laithi said:
سِيرُواtravelفَقَدْfor indeedجَنَّcoveredالظَّلَامُthe darknessعَلَيْكُمْupon youفَبِئْسَand how bad isامْرُؤٌa manيَرْجُوhopesالْقِرَىhospitalityعِنْدَatعَاصِمٍAsim
Travel, for the darkness has covered you; how bad is a man who hopes for hospitality at Asim's.
دَفَعْنَاwe pushedإِلَيْهِto himوَهُوَwhile he wasكَالَّذِيخِlike the male hyenaخَاطِيًاpaddingنَشُدُّwe tieعَلَىonأَكْبَادِنَاour liversبِالْعَمَائِمِ6with the turbans
We pushed to him while he was like a padding male hyena, tying our livers with the turbans.
وَقَالَand saidالرَّاعِيthe shepherdفِيinذَلِكَthat
And al-Ra'i said about that:
يَشِبُّhe kindlesلِرَكْبٍfor a riding groupمِنْهُمْof themمِنْfromوَرَائِهِمْbehind themفَكُلُّهُمْand all of themأَمْسَىspent the eveningإِلَىtowardsضَوْئِهَاits lightسُرَىtravelling by night
He kindles for a riding group of them from behind them, and all of them spent the evening travelling by night towards its light.
إِلَىtoضَوْءِthe lightنَارٍof a fireيَشْتَوِيroastsالْقَدُّthe dried meatأَهْلُهَاits peopleوَقَدْand indeedيُكْرِمُhonorsالْأَضْيَافَthe guestsوَالْقَدُّand the dried meatيُشْتَوَىis roasted
To the light of a fire whose people roast dried meat; indeed he honors the guests while the dried meat is being roasted.
فَلَمَّاand whenأَنَاخُواthey made their camels kneelوَاشْتَكَيْنَاand we complainedإِلَيْهِمْto themبَكَوْاthey weptوَكُلُّاand bothالْخَصْمَيْنِthe two opponentsمِمَّاfrom whatبِهِwith itبَكَى7wept
And when they made their camels kneel and we complained to them, they wept; and both opponents wept from what was with them.
بَكَىweptمُعْوِزٌa needy oneمِنْfromأَنْthatيُضَافَhe is hostedوَطَارِقٌand a night visitorيَشُدُّtiesمِنَfromالْجُوعِhungerالْإِزَارَthe waistclothعَلَىonالْحَشَاthe belly
A needy one wept because he could not be hosted, and a night visitor ties his waistcloth on his belly from hunger.
