قَالَsaidأَعْرَابِيٌّa Bedouin«جِعْتُI became hungryحَتَّىuntilسَمِعْتُI heardفِيinمَسَامِعِيmy earsدَوِيًّاa ringing..
A Bedouin said: “I became so hungry that I heard a ringing in my ears.”
فَخَرَجْتُso I went outأُرِيغُ1seekingالصَّيْدَthe game،,فَإِذَاand loبِمَغَارَةٍa cave،,وَإِذَاand thereجَرْوُa cubذِئْبٍof a wolf..
So I went out seeking game, and behold, there was a cave and a wolf cub.
فَذَبَحْتُهُso I slaughtered itوَأَكَلْتُهُand ate it،,وَادَّهَنْتُand I anointed myself with oilوَأَحْتَذَيْتُand I wore as shoes»..
So I slaughtered it and ate it, and I anointed myself and wore (its skin) as shoes.”
وَلَمَّاand whenقَدِمَarrivedالْمُغِيرَةُ2Al-Mughirahالْقَادِسِيَّةَ3Al-QadisiyyahعَلَىuponسَعْدٍSa'dبِسَبْعِينَwith seventyمِنْofالظَّهْرِmounts،,وَعِنْدَand withسَعْدٍSa'dضِيقٌa tightnessشَدِيدٌsevereمِنْofالْحَالِthe situation،,
And when Al-Mughirah arrived at Al-Qadisiyyah to Sa'd with seventy mounts, while Sa'd was in a severe straitened circumstance.
نَحَرُوهَاthey slaughtered them،,وَأَكَلُواand they ateلُحُومَهَاtheir meats،,وَأَدْهَنُواand they anointed with oilمَشَاحِبَهَاthe oil of their fat،,وَاحْتَذَوْا4and they wore as shoesجُلُودَهَاtheir skins..
They slaughtered them, ate their meat, used the oil from their fat for anointing, and used their skins for footwear.
وَذَكَرَand mentionedالْأَصْمَعِيُّAl-Asma'iعَنْon the authority ofعُثْمَانَUthmanالشَّحَّامِal-Shahham،,عَنْon the authority ofأَبِيAbuرَجَاءٍRajaالْعُطَارِدِيِّ5al-Utaridi،,قَالَhe said::
And Al-Asma'i mentioned on the authority of Uthman al-Shahham, on the authority of Abu Raja al-Utaridi, who said:
«لَمَّاwhenبَلَغَنَاit reached usأَنَّthatالنَّبِيَّthe ProphetصَلَّىprayedاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand peaceقَدْindeedأَخَذَbeganفِيinالْقَتْلِthe killingهَرَبْنَاwe fled،,فَاشْتَوَيْنَاso we roastedفَخِذَa thighأَرْنَبٍof a rabbitدَفِينًا6buried،,وَأَلْقَيْنَاand we threwعَلَيْهَاupon itجِمَالَتَنَا7our garments..
“When we learned that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had started to kill (people), we fled, so we roasted a thigh of a rabbit in a pit and threw our garments over it. I shall not forget that meal.”
فَلَاand notأَنْسَىI forgetتِلْكَthatالْأَكْلَةَmeal»..
I will never forget that meal.”
وَكَانَand wasالْأَصْمَعِيُّAl-Asma'iإِذَاwhenحَدَّثَhe narratedبِهَذَاthisالْحَدِيثِhadithقَالَhe said::
And Al-Asma'i, when he narrated this hadith, would say:
«نِعْمَhow excellentالْإِدَامُthe condimentالْجُوعُhunger..وَنِعْمَand how excellentشِعَارُthe emblemالْمُسْلِمِينَof the Muslimsالتَّخْفِيفُlightness»..
“How excellent a condiment hunger is! And how excellent a symbol of the Muslims lightness is!”
وَذَكَرُواand they mentionedعَنْon the authority ofعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِal-MalikبْنِibnعُمَيْرٍUmair،8,عَنْon the authority ofرَجُلٍa manمِنْfromبَنِيthe tribe ofعُذْرَةَUdhra،,قَالَhe said::
And they mentioned on the authority of Abd al-Malik ibn Umair, on the authority of a man from Banu Udhra, who said:

Dafeenan: Cooked in a pit that is buried.
- 7.جِمَالَتَنَا: ثِيَابَنَا.
Jimalatana: Our clothes.
- 8.عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ: مُحَدِّثٌ كُوفِيٌّ.
Abd al-Malik ibn Umair: A Kufan hadith narrator.
- 9.هَجَرَ: بَلَدٌ بِالْبَحْرَيْنِ.
Hajar: A land in Bahrain.
- 10.بَرْثٌ: أَرْضٌ سَهْلَةٌ.
Barth: Soft land.
