وَقَالَAnd saidالنَّمِرُal-Namirبْنُson ofتَوْلَبٍTawlab
And al-Namir ibn Tawlab said:
لَهَاFor herمَاwhatتَشْتَهِيshe desiresعَسَلٌhoneyمُصَفًّىstrained
For her is what she desires: strained honey...
وَإِنْAnd ifشَاءَتْshe wishesفَحُوَّارِيٌّthen white breadبِسَمْنٍwith clarified butter
...and if she wishes, white bread with clarified butter.
وَمِنْAnd ofأَشْرَفِthe most nobleمَاwhatعَرَفُوهُthey knewمِنَofالطَّعَامِfood
And among the most noble foods they knew...
وَلَمْAnd notيُطْعِمِfeedالنَّاسَpeopleأَحَدٌanyoneمِنْهُمْof themذَلِكَthatالطَّعَامَfood
...and no one among them fed people that food...
إِلَّاexceptعَبْدُAbdاللهِAllahبْنُson ofجُدْعَانَ1Jud'an
...except Abdullah ibn Jud'an (see footnote 1).
وَهُوَand it isالْفَالُوذَقُal-faludhaj
It is al-faludhaj (a sweet dish).
مَدَحَهُPraised himبِذَلِكَfor thatأُمَيَّةُUmayyaبْنُson ofأَبِيAbiالصَّلْتِal-Salt
Umayya ibn Abi al-Salt praised him for that, saying:
إِلَىToرَدْحٍa large bowlمِنَofالشِّيزَىChinese woodعَلَيْهَاon it
To a large bowl of Chinese wood, upon which...
لُبَابُthe coreالبُرِّof wheatيُلَبَّكُis mixedبِالشَّهَادِ2with honey
...the core of wheat is mixed with honey (see footnote 2).
وَلَهُمُAnd for themالثَّرِيدُtharid
And they have tharid (bread soaked in broth).
وَهُوَand it isفِيamongأَشْرَافِهِمْtheir noblesعَامٌّcommon
It is common among their nobles.
وَغَلَبَAnd prevailedعَلَيْهِover itهَاشِمٌHashim
Hashim became associated with it...
حِينَwhenهَشَمَhe crumbledالْخُبْزَthe breadلِقَوْمِهِfor his people
...when he crumbled bread for his people.
وَقَدْAnd indeedمُدِحَit was praisedبِهِfor itفِيinشِعْرٍpoetryمَشْهُورٍfamous
It was praised in famous poetry.
وَهُوَand it isقَوْلُهُhis saying
And it is his saying:
عَمْرُوAmrالْعُلَاal-Ulaهَشَمَcrumbledالثَّرِيدَtharidلِقَوْمِهِfor his people
Amr of the heights crumbled tharid for his people...
وَرِجَالُAnd men ofمَكَّةَMeccaمُسْنِتُونَstarvingعِجَافٌ3lean
...while the men of Mecca were starving and lean (see footnote 3).
وَمِنَAnd ofالطَّعَامِthe foodالْمَمْدُوحِpraisedالْحَيْسُ4hays
Among the praised foods is hays (see footnote 4).
وَتَزْعُمُAnd claimsمَخْزُومٌ5Makhzum
And Makhzum (see footnote 5) claims...
أَنَّthatأَوَّلَthe firstمَنْwhoحَاسَmixedالْحَيْسَhaysسُوَيْدُSuwaydابْنُson ofهَرْمِيٍّHirmi
...that the first to mix hays was Suwayd ibn Hirmi.
وَقَالَAnd saidالشَّاعِرُthe poet
And the poet said:
وَإِذَاAnd whenتَكُونُthere isشَدِيدَةٌhardshipأُدْعَىI am calledلَهَاfor it
And when hardship occurs, I am called for it...
وَإِذَاAnd whenيُحَاسُhays is mixedالْحَيْسُhaysيُدْعَىis calledجُنْدَبٌJundab
...and when hays is mixed, Jundab is called.
وَالْخُبْزُAnd breadعِنْدَهُمْwith themمَمْدُوحٌpraised
And bread is praised among them.
وَكَانَAnd wasعَبْدُAbdاللهِAllahبْنُson ofحَبِيبٍHabibالْعَنْبَرِيُّal-Anbari
And Abdullah ibn Habib al-Anbari...
أَحَدُone ofبَنِيthe sons ofسَمُرَةَSamura
...one of the Banu Samura...
يُقَالُwas calledلَهُfor himآكِلُeater ofالْخُبْزِbread
...was called 'eater of bread'...
لِأَنَّهُbecause heكَانَwasلَاnotيَأْكُلُeatingالتَّمْرَdates
...because he did not eat dates...
وَلَاand notيَرْغَبُdesiringفِيinاللَّبَنِmilk
...nor did he desire milk.
وَكَانَAnd wasسَيِّدَleader ofبَنِيthe sons ofالْعَنْبَرِal-Anbarفِيinزَمَانِهِhis time
He was the leader of Banu al-Anbar in his time.
وَهُمْAnd theyإِذَاwhenافْتَخَرُواboastedقَالُواsaid
And when they boasted, they said:
مِنَّاAmong usآكِلُeater ofالْخُبْزِbread
Among us is the eater of bread...
وَمِنَّاand among usمُجِيرُprotector ofالطَّيْرِthe bird
...and among us is the protector of the bird...
يَعْنِيmeaningثَوْبَThawbابْنَson ofشُجْنَةَShujnaالْعَنْبَرِيَّal-Anbari
...meaning Thawb ibn Shujna al-Anbari.
وَهُمْAnd theyيُقَدِّمُونَpreferاللَّحْمَmeatعَلَىoverاللَّبَنِmilk
And they prefer meat over milk.
وَلِذَلِكَAnd thereforeقَالَsaidشَاعِرُهُمْtheir poet
And therefore their poet said:

- 1.عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ جُدْعَانَ: مِنْ أَشْرَافِ قُرَيْشٍ وَأَجْوَدِهِمْ، وَكَانَ يُطْعِمُ الْفَالُوذَقَ لِلنَّاسِ.
Abdullah ibn Jud'an: one of the nobles of Quraysh and the most generous of them; he used to feed al-faludhaj to the people.
- 2.الشِّيزَى: خَشَبٌ مِنَ الْهِنْدِ، وَالشَّهَادُ: الْعَسَلُ.
al-Shiza: wood from India; al-Shahad: honey.
- 3.الْبَيْتُ لِعَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ أَوْ لِغَيْرِهِ، وَهُوَ مِنَ الْمَدْحِ الْمَشْهُورِ.
The verse is by Amr ibn al-As or another, and it is among famous praises.
- 4.الْحَيْسُ: خَلِيطٌ مِنَ التَّمْرِ وَالسَّمْنِ وَالْأَقِطِ.
Hays: a mixture of dates, clarified butter, and dried curd.
- 5.مَخْزُومٌ: قَبِيلَةٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ.
Makhzum: a tribe of Quraysh.
