إِذَاWhenالنَّفَرُthe groupٱلسُّودُthe blackٱلْيَمَانُونَthe Yemenisحَاوَلُواthey tried......
When the black Yemeni group tried ...
لَهُfor himحَوْكُwoven garmentبُرْدَيَةٍof a Burdahأَرَقُّواthey made thinnerوَأَوْسَعُوا1and wider
They made his Burdah garment thinner and wider.
وَقَالَAnd saidٱلزُّبَيْرُAl-Zubairبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdٱلْمُطَّلِبِAl-Muttalib
And Al-Zubair ibn Abd al-Muttalib said:
فَإِنَّاFor indeed weقَدْalreadyخُلِقْنَاwere createdإِذْwhenخُلِقْنَاwe were created
For indeed we were created when we were created
لَنَاfor usٱلْحُبُرَاتُthe fine garmentsوَٱلْمِسْكُand muskٱلْفَتِيتُ2the crumbled
For us are the fine garments and the crumbled musk.
وَلَوْلَاAnd were it not forٱلْحُمْسُthe Hums (tribe)لَمْnotيَلْبَسْwould wearرِجَالٌmenثِيَابَclothes ofأَعِزَّةٍhonorable onesحَتَّىuntilيَمُوتُوا3they die
And were it not for the Hums, men would not wear the clothes of the honorable until they die.
ثِيَابُهُمْTheir clothesشِمَالٌof Shamal (a type of fabric)أَوْorعَبَاءٌan cloakبِهَاin itدَنَسٌdirtكَمَاlikeدَنِسَbecame dirtyٱلْحَمِيتُ4the dark-skinned camel
Their clothes are of Shamal fabric or a cloak with dirt in it, like the dirt of the dark-skinned camel.
فَمَيَّزَAnd he distinguishedكَمَاasتَرَىyou seeبَيْنَbetweenلِبَاسِthe clothing ofٱلْأَشْرَافِthe noblesوَأَهْلِand people ofٱلثَّرْوَةِwealthوَغَيْرِهِمْand others
And he distinguished, as you see, between the clothing of the nobles and the wealthy and others.
وَقَالَAnd saidٱلْأَعْشَىAl-A'sha
And Al-A'sha said:
لِلشَّرَفِTo the high placeٱلْعَوْدِthe ancientفَأَكْنَافُهُso its sidesمَاwhatبَيْنَbetweenحِمْيَرٍHimyarفَيَنْصُوبَ5and Yansub
To the ancient high place, so its sides are what is between Himyar and Yansub.
خَيْرٌBetterلَهَاfor herإِنْifخَشِيَتْshe fearedجُحَرَهُhis denمِنْthanرَبِّهَاher lordزَيْدِZaidبْنِson ofأَيُّوبَ6Ayyub
Better for her, if she feared his den, than her lord Zaid ibn Ayyub.
مُتَّكِئًاRecliningتُقْرَعُare knockedأَبْوَابُهُhis doorsيُسْعَىis servedعَلَيْهِto himٱلْعَبْدُthe slaveبِٱلْكُوبِwith the cup
Reclining, his doors are knocked, and the slave serves him with the cup.
وَقَالَAnd saidأَبُوAbuٱلصَّلْتِal-Saltبْنُson ofأَبِيAbiرَبِيعَةَRabi'ah
And Abu al-Salt ibn Abi Rabi'ah said:
ٱشْرَبْDrinkهَنِيئًاpleasantlyعَلَيْكَupon youٱلتَّاجُthe crownمُرْتَفِقًاleaningفِيinرَأْسِthe top ofغُمْدَانَGhumdanدَارًاa houseمِنْكَfrom youمُحْلَالًا7inhabited
Drink pleasantly, upon you is the crown, leaning in the top of Ghumdan, a house from you inhabited.
وَلَيْسَAnd notهَذَاthisمِنْfromبَابِthe category ofٱلْإِفْرَاطِexaggeration
And this is not from the category of exaggeration.
وَبَابُAnd the category ofٱلْإِفْرَاطِexaggerationكَقَوْلِis like the saying ofجِرَانِJiranٱلْعَوْدِal-Awdوَصَفَhe describedنَفْسَهُhimselfوَعَشِيقَتَهُand his belovedفَقَالَand said
And the category of exaggeration is like the saying of Jiran al-Awd when he described himself and his beloved, and said:
فَأَصْبَحَAnd he became in the morningفِيinحَيْثُwhereٱلْتَقَيْنَاwe metغَدِيَّةًin the morningسِوَارٌa braceletوَخَلْخَالٌand an ankletوَمِرْطٌand a wrapمُطَرَّفٌ8striped
And in the morning where we met, there was a bracelet, an anklet, and a striped wrap.

The Burdah is a striped cloak worn by the Arabs.

Al-huburat is the plural of hubrah, which is a fine garment.

- 5.حِمْيَرُ: قَبِيلَةٌ مِنَ الْيَمَنِ، وَيَنْصُوبُ: مَوْضِعٌ.
Himyar is a tribe from Yemen, and Yansub is a place.
- 6.زَيْدُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ: رَجُلٌ كَرِيمٌ.
Zaid ibn Ayyub is a generous man.
- 7.غُمْدَانُ: قَصْرٌ فِي الْيَمَنِ.
Ghumdan is a palace in Yemen.
- 8.الْمِرْطُ: كِسَاءٌ مِنْ صُوفٍ أَوْ خَزٍّ.
Al-mirt is a cloak made of wool or silk.
