وَمُنْقَطِعَاتٍand piecesمِنْfromعُقُودٍnecklacesتَرَكْنَهَاthey left it......كَجَمْرِlike embersالْغَضَاof the ghada treeفِيinبَعْضِsomeمَاwhatتَتَخَطَّفُ1it snatches
And pieces of necklaces they left behind... like embers of the ghada tree in some of what it snatches.
وَمِنْand fromذَلِكَthatقَوْلُthe sayingعَدِيِّof Adiبْنِson ofزَيْدٍZayd::
And from that is the saying of Adi ibn Zayd:
يَاOلُبَيْنَىLubaynaأَوْقِدِيkindleالنَّارَاthe fire......إِنَّindeedمَنْwhoتَهْوِينَyou loveقَدْhasحَارَا2become perplexed
O Lubayna, kindle the fire... Indeed, the one you love has become perplexed.
رُبَّmany aنَارٍfireبِتُّI spent the nightأَرْقُبُهَاwatching it......تَقْضَمُit gnawsالْهِنْدِيَّthe Indian (sword)وَالْغَارَاand the laurel
Many a fire I spent the night watching... It gnaws the Indian sword and the laurel.
وَقَالَand saidالْآخَرُthe other::
And the other said:
أَرَىI seeفِيinالْهَوَىloveنَارًاa fireلِظَبْيَةٍof a female gazelleأَوْقَدَتْshe kindled......يَشِبُّit blazesوَيُذْكَىand is fueledبَعْدَهُنَّafter themوَقُودُهَا3its fuel
I see in love a fire of a female gazelle she kindled... it blazes and is fueled after them, its fuel.
تَشَبُّit blazesبِعِيدَانِwith sticksالْيَلَنْجُوجِof the lign aloeمَوْهِنًاat night......وَبِالرَّنْدِand with the fragrant woodأَحْيَانًاsometimesفَذَاكَand that isوَقُودُهَا4its fuel
It blazes with sticks of lign aloe at night... and with the fragrant wood sometimes, and that is its fuel.
قَدْalreadyذَكَرْنَاwe mentionedالطَّعَامَthe foodالْمَمْدُوحَpraisedمَاwhatهُوَit is،,وَذَكَرْنَاand we mentionedأَحَدَoneصِنْفَيْof the two kindsالطَّعَامِof foodالْمَذْمُومِblameworthy،,وَالصِّنْفُand the kindالْآخَرُotherكَالْخَزِيرَةِlike the khaziraالَّتِيwhichتُعَابُis blamedبِهَاfor itمُجَاشِعُMujashiبْنُson ofدَارِمٍ5Darim،,وَكَنَحْوِand likeالسَّخِينَةِ6the sakinaالَّتِيwhichتُعَابُis blamedبِهَاfor itقُرَيْشٌQuraysh..
We have mentioned what the praised food is, and we mentioned one of the two blameworthy kinds of food, and the other kind is like the khazira for which Mujashi ibn Darim is blamed, and like the sakina for which Quraysh is blamed.
قَالَsaidخُدَاشُKhudashبْنُson ofزُهَيْرٍ7Zuhayr::
Khudash ibn Zuhayr said:
يَاOشِدَّةَseverityمَاwhatشَدَدْنَاwe enduredغَيْرَnotكَاذِبَةٍlying......عَلَىagainstسَخِينَةَSakhinaلَوْلَاif not forاللَّيْلُthe nightوَالْحُرُمُ8and the sacred months
O severity of what we endured, not lying, against Sakhina, if not for the night and the sacred months.
وَقَالَand saidعَبْدُAbdاللَّهِAllahبْنُson ofهَمَّامٍ9Hammam::
And Abdullah ibn Hammam said:
إِذَاwhenلَضَرَبْتُهُمْI would strike themحَتَّىuntilيَعُودُواthey return......بِمَكَّةَin Meccaيَلْعَقُونَthey lickبِهَاwith itالسَّخِينَاthe sakina
When I would strike them until they return... in Mecca they lick with it the sakina.

As-sakina: a food made of flour, water, and grease.
- 7.خُدَاشُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ: شَاعِرٌ جَاهِلِيٌّ
Khudash ibn Zuhayr: a pre-Islamic poet.
