وَقَالَAnd saidجَرِيرٌ:Jarir:
And Jarir said:
وَضَعَplacedالْخَزِيرَ،the khazira (a meat dish),فَقِيلَ:so it was said:أَيْنَWhereمُجَاشِعٌMujashi'......
He placed the khazira, so it was said: Where is Mujashi'? ...
فَشَحَاSo he opened wideجَحَافِلَهُhis lipsهَجَفٌّbulkyهِبْلَعٌ1greedy
So he opened wide his lips, bulky, greedy.
وَالْخَزِيرُAnd the khaziraلَمْnotيَكُنْwasمِنْfromطَعَامِهِمْ،their food,وَلَهُand it hasحَدِيثٌ.a story.
And the khazira was not from their food, and it has a story.
وَالسَّخِينَةُAnd the sakhina (a wheat porridge)كَانَتْwasمِنْfromطَعَامِthe foodقُرَيْشٍ.of Quraysh.
And the sakhina was from the food of Quraysh.
وَتُهُجِّىAnd were satirizedالْأَنْصَارُthe Ansarوَعَبْدُand Abdالْقَيْسِal-Qaysوَعُذْرَةُand Adhraوَكُلُّand everyمَنْone whoكَانَwasبِقُرْبِnearالنَّخْلِ،the palm trees,بِأَكْلِfor eatingالتَّمْرِ،dates,
And the Ansar, Abd al-Qays, Adhra, and everyone who was near palm trees were satirized for eating dates.
فَقَالَSo saidالْفَرَزْدَقُ:al-Farazdaq:
So al-Farazdaq said:
لَسْتُI am notبِسَعْدِيٍّa Sa'diعَلَىonفِيهِhis mouthحِبَرَةٌa striped garment......
I am not a Sa'di, on whose mouth is a striped garment ...
وَلَسْتُAnd I am notبِعَبْدِيٍّa Abdiحَقِيبَتُهُhis saddlebagالتَّمْرُ2dates
And I am not an Abdi, whose saddlebag is dates.
وَتُهُجِّىAnd were satirizedأَسَدٌAsadبِأَكْلِfor eatingالْكِلَابِ،dogs,وَبِأَكْلِand for eatingلُحُومِthe fleshالنَّاسِ.of people.
And Asad was satirized for eating dogs and for eating the flesh of people.
وَالْعَرَبُAnd the Arabsإِذَاwhenوَجَدَتْfoundرَجُلًاa manمِنَfromالْقَبِيلَةِthe tribeقَدْindeedأَتَىcommittedقَبِيحًاsomething uglyأَلْزَمَتْattributedذَلِكَthatالْقَبِيلَةَthe tribeكُلَّهَا،whole,
And the Arabs, when they found a man from a tribe who had committed something ugly, attributed that to the whole tribe,
كَمَاjust asتَمْدَحُpraiseالْقَبِيلَةَthe tribeبِفِعْلٍfor an actجَمِيلٍ،beautiful,وَإِنْeven ifلَمْnotيَكُنْit beذَلِكَthatإِلَّاexceptبِوَاحِدٍwith oneمِنْهَا.of them.
Just as they praise the tribe for a beautiful act, even if that was only from one of them.
فَتَهْجُوSo they satirizeقُرَيْشًاQurayshبِالسَّخِينَةِ،for the sakhina,وَعَبْدَand Abdالْقَيْسِal-Qaysبِالتَّمْرِ.for dates.
So they satirize Quraysh for the sakhina, and Abd al-Qays for dates.
وَذَلِكَAnd thatعَامٌّgeneralفِيinالْحَيَّيْنِthe two clansجَمِيعًا،all,وَهُمَاand bothمِنْfromصَالِحِgoodالْأَغْذِيَةِfoodsوَالْأَقْوَاتِ.and provisions.
And that is general in both clans entirely, and both are from good foods and provisions.
كَمَاJust asتُهْجَىthey are satirizedبِأَكْلِfor eatingالْكِلَابِdogsوَالنَّاسِand peopleوَإِنْeven thoughكَانَit wasذَلِكَthatإِنَّمَاonlyكَانَwasمِنْfromرَجُلٍa manوَاحِدٍ،one,
Just as they are satirized for eating dogs and people, even though that was only from one man,
وَلَعَلَّكَand perhaps youإِذَاifأَرَدْتَyou wantedالتَّحْصِيلَthe investigationتَجِدُهُyou find himمَعْذُورًا.excused.
And perhaps if you wanted the investigation, you would find him excused.
قَالَSaidالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
Said the poet:
يَاOفَقْعَسِيُّ3Faq'asiلِمَwhyأَكَلْتَهُdid you eat itلِمَهْ؟for what?
O Faq'asi, why did you eat it? For what?
......
Ellipsis.
لَوْIfخَافَكَfeared youاللهُAllahعَلَيْهِfor itحَرَّمَهُHe would have forbidden it
If Allah feared you for it, He would have forbidden it.
فَمَاSo notأَكَلْتَdid you eatلَحْمَهُits fleshوَلَاnorدَمَهُits blood
So you did not eat its flesh nor its blood.
وَقَالَAnd saidفِيconcerningذَلِكَthatمُسَاوِرُMusawirبْنُibnهِنْدٍ:Hind:
And concerning that, Musawir ibn Hind said:
إِذَاWhenأَسَدِيَّةٌan Asadi womanوَلَدَتْgives birth toغُلَامًاa boy......
When an Asadi woman gives birth to a boy ...
فَبَشِّرْهَاthen give her glad tidingsبِلُؤْمٍof basenessفِيinالْغُلَامِthe boy
Then give her glad tidings of baseness in the boy.
تُخْرِسُهَاsilence herنِسَاءُthe womenبَنِيof BanuدُبَيْرٍDubayr......
The women of Banu Dubayr silence her ...
بِأَخْبَثِwith the worstمَاwhatيَجِدْنَthey findمِنَofالطَّعَامِfood
With the worst food they find.
تَرَىYou seeأَظْفَارَthe nailsأَعْقَدَof A'qadمُلْقَيَاتٍthrown......
You see the nails of A'qad thrown ...
بَرَاثِنُهَاtheir pawsعَلَىonوَضَمِthe platformالثُّمَامِ4of the thumam plant
Their paws on the platform of the thumam plant.
