عَجِلْتُمْyou hastenedمَاnotصَدَّكُمْprevented youعِلَاجِيmy remedy......
You hastened; my remedy did not prevent you...
مِنَfromالْعُنُوقِthe lambsوَمِنَand fromالنِّعَاجِ1the ewes
From the lambs and the ewes. ⟦1⟧
حَتَّىuntilأَكَلْتُمْyou ateطَفْلَةًa young girlكَالْعَاجِ2like ivory
Until you ate a young girl like ivory. ⟦2⟧
وَلَمَّاand whenعَيَّرَhe reproachedثَوْبُThawbبْنُson ofشِحْمَةَShihmaبِأَكْلِfor eatingالْفَتَىthe young manلَحْمَthe fleshالْمَرْأَةِof the woman
And when Thawb ibn Shihma reproached the young man for eating the woman's flesh...
إِلَىuntilأَنْthatنَزَلَhe descendedهُوَheمِنَfromالْجَبَلِthe mountain،,قَالَsaid
Until he himself came down from the mountain, and said...
يَاOبِنْتَdaughter ofعَمِّيmy uncleمَاwhatأَدْرَاكِmade you knowمَاwhatحَسَبِيmy honor
O my cousin, what made you know what my honor is?
إِذَاwhenلَاnotتَجِنُّconcealخَبِيثَbadالزَّادِprovisionsأَضْلَاعِيmy ribs
When my ribs do not conceal bad provisions.
إِنِّيindeed Iلَذُوpossessor ofمِرَّةٍbitterness/strengthتُخْشَىfearedبَوَادِرُهُits onsetsعِنْدَatالصِّيَاحِthe shoutingبِنَصْلِwith the bladeالسَّيْفِthe swordقَرَّاعُone who strikes
Indeed I am a man of severity whose onsets are feared, at the shouting, a striker with the sword's blade.
فَهَجَاso he satirizedثَوْبَThawbبْنَson ofشِحْمَةَShihmaبِأَكْلِfor eatingلُحُومِthe flesh ofأَمْرَأَةٍa woman
So he satirized Thawb ibn Shihma for eating the flesh of a woman.
وَكَانَand wasثَوْبٌThawbهَذَاthisأَكْرَمَmore nobleنَفْسًاsoulعِنْدَهُمْwith themمِنْthanأَنْthatيَطْعَمَhe tasteطَعَامًاfoodخَبِيثًاbad
This Thawb was more noble in soul among them than to taste bad food.
وَلَوْeven ifمَاتَhe diedعِنْدَهُمْwith themجُوعًاhunger
Even if he died of hunger among them.
وَلَهُand for himقِصَصٌstories
And he has stories.
وَلَقَدْand indeedأُسِرَwas capturedحَاتِمُHatimالطَّائِيُّat-Ta'i،,وَظَلَّand stayedعِنْدَهُwith himزَمَانًاa time
And indeed Hatim at-Ta'i was captured, and he stayed with him for a time.
وَقَالَand saidالشَّاعِرُthe poetيَهْجُوsatirizingبَاهِلَةَBahilaبِمِثْلِwith the like ofذَلِكَthat
And the poet said, satirizing Bahila with something similar:
إِنَّindeedغُفَاقًاGhufaqأَكَلَتْهُate himبَاهِلَةُBahila،,تَمَشَّشُواthey suckedعِظَامَهُhis bonesوَكَاهِلَهُ3and his upper back
Indeed, Bahila ate Ghufaq; they sucked his bones and his upper back. ⟦3⟧
وَأَصْبَحَتْand becameأُمُّmother ofغُفَاقٍGhufaqثَاكِلَةً4bereaved
And the mother of Ghufaq became bereaved. ⟦4⟧
وَهُجِيَتْand was satirizedبِذَلِكَfor thatأَسَدٌAsadجَمِيعًاallبِسَبَبِbecause ofرَمْلَةَRamlaبِنْتِdaughter ofفَائِدِFa'idبْنِson ofحَبِيبِHabibبْنِson ofخَالِدِKhalidبْنِson ofنَضْلَةَNadla
And because of that, all of Asad was satirized, because of Ramla bint Fa'id ibn Habib ibn Khalid ibn Nadla,
حِينَwhenأَكَلَهَاate herزَوْجُهَاher husbandوَأَخُوهَاand her brotherأَبُوAbuأَرْبٍArb
When her husband and her brother Abu Arb ate her.
وَقَدْand indeedزَعَمُواthey claimedأَنَّthatذَاكَthatإِنَّمَاonlyكَانَwasمِنْهُمَاfrom them bothمِنْfromطَرِيقِwayالْغَيْظِrageوَالْغَيْرَةِand jealousy
And they claimed that this was only from them both out of rage and jealousy.
فَقَالَso saidابْنُson ofدَارَةَDaraيَنْعَىlamentingذَلِكَthatعَلَيْهِمْagainst them
So Ibn Dara said, lamenting that against them:
أَفِيis it becauseأَنْthatرَوِيتُمْyou drankوَاحْتَلَبْتُمْand you milkedشَكِيَّكُمْyour desireفَخَرْتُمْso you boasted؟?وَفِيمَand in whatالْفَقْعَسِيُّal-Faq'asiمِنَofالْفَخْرِpride؟5?
Is it because you drank and milked your desire, so you boasted? And what does al-Faq'asi have to do with pride? ⟦5⟧
