وَقَالَAnd saidهِلَالُHilalبْنُson ofخَثْعَمَ:Khath'am:
And Hilal ibn Khath'am said:
إِنِّيIndeed Iلَعَفٌّam chasteعَنْfromزِيَارَةِvisitingجَارَتِيmy neighbor
Indeed I am chaste from visiting my neighbor
......وَإِنِّيand indeed Iلَمَنْشُوءٌam averseإِلَيَّto meاغْتِيَابُهَا1backbiting her
... and indeed I am averse to backbiting her
إِذَاWhenغَابَis absentعَنْهَاfrom herبَعْلُهَاher husbandلَمْnotأَكُنْI amلَهَاto her
When her husband is absent from her, I am not to her
زُؤُورًاa frequent visitorوَلَمْand notتَأْنَسْfeel familiarإِلَيَّwith meكِلَابُهَاher dogs
a frequent visitor, and her dogs do not feel familiar with me
وَمَاAnd notأَنَاI amبِالدَّارِيknowingأَحَادِيثَthe talksبَيْتِهَاof her houseوَلَاand notعَالِمٍknowingمِنْofأَيِّwhichحَوْكٍweavingثِيَابُهَاher clothes
And I am not knowing the talks of her house, nor knowing of which weaving her clothes are
وَقَالَAnd saidابْنُson ofهِرْمَةَHirmaفِيregardingفَرَحِthe joyالْكَلْبِof the dogبِالضَّيْفِ،at the guest,لِعَادَةِdue to the habitالنَّحْرِ:of slaughtering:
And Ibn Hirma said regarding the joy of the dog at the guest, due to the habit of slaughtering:
وَفَرْحَةِAnd the joyمِنْofكِلَابِthe dogsالْحَيِّof the tribeيَتْبَعُهَاfollows it
And the joy of one of the dogs of the tribe, follows it
مَحْضٌpure milkيُزَفُّis broughtبِهِwith itالرَّاعِيthe shepherdوَتَرْعِيبُand fright
pure milk that the shepherd brings with it, and fright
وَقَالَAnd saidابْنُson ofهِرْمَةَ:Hirma:
And Ibn Hirma said:
وَمُسْتَنْجِحٍAnd a supplicantنَبَّهْتُI alertedكَلْبِيmy dogلِصَوْتِهِto his voice
And a supplicant whose voice I alerted my dog to
فَقُلْتُthen I saidلَهُ:to him:قُمْRiseبِالْيَفَاعِat the high placeفَجَاوِبْ2and respond
Then I said to him: Rise at the high place and respond.
فَجَاءَThen cameخَفِيُّa hiddenالشَّخْصِpersonقَدْindeedرَامَهُsought himالطَّوَىhunger
Then came a hidden person whom hunger sought
بِضَرْبَةِwith a strikeمَسْنُونِof sharpenedالْغِرَارَيْنِ3the two edges
with a strike of sharpened two-edged cutting sword.
فَرَحَّبْتُThen I welcomedوَاسْتَبْشَرْتُand I rejoicedحِينَwhenرَأَيْتُهُI saw him
Then I welcomed and rejoiced when I saw him
وَتِلْكَand thatالَّتِيwhichأَلْقَىI meetبِهَاwith itكُلَّeveryنَائِبِmisfortune
and that is what I meet every misfortune with
وَفِيAnd regardingمَعْنَىthe meaningالْكَلْبِof the dogمِنَofالنُّبَاحِthe barkingيَقُولُsaysابْنُson ofأَعْيَاA'yaفِيaboutالْحُطَيْئَةِ:al-Hutay'ah:
And regarding the meaning of the dog's barking, Ibn A'ya says about al-Hutay'ah:
أَلَاIndeedقَبَّحَdeformاللَّهُGodالْحُطَيْئَةَ!al-Hutay'ah!إِنَّهُindeed he
Indeed may God deform al-Hutay'ah! Indeed he
عَلَىuponكُلِّeveryضَيْفٍguestضَافَهُthat stays with himفَهُوَthen he isسَالِحٌdefecating
upon every guest that stays with him, then he is defecating
دَفَعْتُI pushedإِلَيْهِto himوَهُوَwhile heيَخْنُقُchokesكَلْبَهُhis dog
I pushed to him while he was choking his dog
أَلَاIndeedكُلُّeveryكَلْبٍ،dog,لَاnoأَبَالَكَ،father of yours,نَابِحٌ4barking
Indeed every dog, no father of yours, is barking.
بَكَيْتُI weptعَلَىforمَذْقٍmilk mixed with waterخَبِيثٍbadقَرَيْتُهُI offered him
I wept for bad milk mixed with water that I offered him
أَلَاIndeedكُلُّeveryعَبْسِيٍّAbsiعَلَىoverالزَّادِthe provisionنَائِحٌ5crying
Indeed every Absi over the provision is crying.
وَقَدْAnd indeedقَالُواthey saidفِيregardingصِفَةِthe descriptionأَبْوَابِthe doorsأَهْلِthe peopleالْمَقْدِرَةِof capabilityوَالثَّرْوَةِ،and wealth,
And indeed they said regarding the description of the doors of the people of capability and wealth,
إِذَاwhenكَانُواthey wereيَقُومُونَfulfillingبِحَقِّthe right ofالنِّعْمَةِ.the blessing.
when they were fulfilling the right of the blessing.
قَالَSaidالرَّاجِزُ:the Rajaz poet:
Said the Rajaz poet:
«إِنَّ"Indeedالنَّدَىgenerosityحَيْثُwhereتُرَىis seenالضِّغَاطَا»6the crowding"
"Indeed generosity is where the crowding is seen."
