وَقَالَAnd saidآخَرُ:another:
And another said:
أَبْيَضُwhiteبَسَّامٌsmilingبَرُودٌcoolمَضْجَعُهُhis bed......
White, smiling, his bed is cool...
اللُّقْمَةُthe morselالفَرْدُsingleمِرَارًاrepeatedlyتُشْبِعُهُsatisfies him
The single morsel repeatedly satisfies him.
وَهُمْAnd theyيَمْدَحُونَpraiseأَصْحَابَthe owners ofالنِّيرَانِ،the fires,
And they praise the owners of fires,
وَيَذُمُّونَand they blameأَصْحَابَthe owners ofالإِخْمَادِ.extinguishing.
and they blame the owners of extinguishing.
قَالَsaidالشَّاعِرُ:the poet:
The poet said:
لَهُFor himنَارٌa fireتَشَبُّblazesبِكُلِّwith everyرِيحٍwind......
He has a fire that blazes with every wind...
إِذْwhenالظَّلْمَاءُthe darknessجَلَّلَتْcoveredاليَفَاعَا1the highland
When the darkness covered the highland. [1]
وَمَاAnd notأَنْthatكَانَwasأَكْثَرَهُمْthe most of themسَوَامًاlivestock......
And it was not that he had the most livestock...
وَلَكِنْbutكَانَhe wasأَرْحَبَهُمْthe most generousذِرَاعًا2in arm
But he was the most generous in arm. [2]
وَقَالَAnd saidمُزَرِّدُMuzarridبْنُson ofضِرَارٍ:Dirar:
And Muzarrid ibn Dirar said:
فَأَبْصَرَAnd he sawنَارِيmy fireوَهِيَwhile itشَقْرَاءُblazingأُوقِدَتْkindled......
And he saw my fire, blazing, kindled...
بِعَلْيَاءَon a high placeنَشْزٍ،elevatedلِلْعُيُونِfor the eyesالنَّوَاظِرِ3watching
on a high elevated place, for watching eyes. [3]
جَعَلَهَاHe made itشَقْرَاءَblazingلِيَكُونَso that it beأَضْوَأَmore illuminatingلَهَا.for it.
He made it blazing to be more illuminating.
وَكَذَلِكَAnd likewiseالنَّارُthe fireإِذَاwhenكَانَwasحَطَبُهَاits woodيَابِسًاdryكَانَit wasأَشَدَّmore intenseلِحُمْرَةِin redness ofنَارِهِ،its fire,
And likewise, when the fire's wood is dry, it is more intense in the redness of its flame,
وَإِذَاand whenكَثُرَmanyدُخَانُهُits smokeقَلَّdiminishedضَوْءُهُ.its light.
and when its smoke is much, its light diminishes.
وَقَالَAnd saidالْآخَرُ:the other:
And the other said:
وَنَارٍAnd a fireكَسِحْرِlike magic ofالعُودِthe woodيَرْفَعُraisesضَوْءُهَاits light......
And a fire like the magic of aloeswood, its light raises...
مَعَwithاللَّيْلِthe nightهَبَّاتُgusts ofالرِّيَاحِthe windsالصَّوَارِدِ4the cold
with the night, gusts of cold winds. [4]
وَكُلَّمَاAnd wheneverكَانَwasمَوْضِعُthe place ofالنَّارِthe fireأَشَدَّmoreارْتِفَاعًا،elevation,
And whenever the place of the fire is more elevated,
كَانَwasصَاحِبُهَاits ownerأَجْوَدَmore generousوَأَمْجَدَ،and more glorious,
its owner is more generous and more glorious,
لِكَثْرَةِbecause of the manyمَنْthose whoيَرَاهَاsee itمِنَfromالبُعْدِ.afar.
because of the many who see it from afar.
أَلَاIndeedتَرَىdo you seeالنَّابِغَةَan-Nabighaالجَعْدِيَّal-Ja'diحِينَwhenيَقُولُ:he says:
Do you not see an-Nabigha al-Ja'di when he says:
مَنَعَHe preventedالْغَدْرَtreacheryفَلَمْso notأَهُمَّI intendبِهِit......
He prevented treachery, so I did not intend it...
وَأَخُوAnd the brother ofالْغَدْرِtreacheryإِذَاwhenهَمَّhe intendsفَعَلَhe does
And the brother of treachery, when he intends, he does.
خَشْيَةَfearingاللهِGodوَأَنِّيand that Iرَجُلٌa man......
Fearing God, and that I am a man...
إِنَّمَاonlyذِكْرِيmy mentionكَنَارٍlike a fireبِقَبَلٍ5on a hill
My mention is only like a fire on a hill. [5]
وَقَالَتْAnd saidخَنْسَاءُKhawsa'السُّلَمِيَّةُ:6as-Sulamiyya:
And Khawsa' as-Sulamiyya said: [6]

Al-yafa': what is elevated from the earth.
- 2.أَرْحَبُهُمْ ذِرَاعًا: أَكْثَرُهُمْ عَطَاءً وَأَوْسَعُهُمْ كَرَمًا.
Arhabuhum dhira'an: the most giving and the most generous.
- 3.العَلْيَاءُ: المَكَانُ المُرْتَفِعُ، وَالنَّشْزُ: مَا ارْتَفَعَ مِنَ الأَرْضِ.
Al-'alya': the high place, and an-nashz: what is elevated from the earth.
- 4.الصَّوَارِدُ: البَارِدَةُ، وَالصَّارِدُ: البَارِدُ.
As-sawarid: the cold, and as-sarid: cold.
- 5.قَبَلٌ: جَانِبُ الجَبَلِ، وَقِيلَ: حَيْثُ تَسْتَقْبِلُهُ الشَّمْسُ.
Qabal: the side of the mountain, and it is said: where the sun faces it.
- 6.خَنْسَاءُ السُّلَمِيَّةُ: هِيَ الشَّاعِرَةُ المَشْهُورَةُ، وَهِيَ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ.
Khawsa' as-Sulamiyya: she is the famous poetess, and she is from Banu Sulaym.
