الاِرْتِفَاقُThe benefitingبِالْمِصْبَاحِby the lampمَاas long asأَمْكَنَpossibleالصَّبْرُ1the patience
Benefiting from the lamp is possible as long as one can endure it.
ثُمَّThenإِنَّهُمْtheyتَنَاهَدُوا2exchanged giftsوَandتَخَارَجُوا3settled their accounts
Then they exchanged gifts and settled their accounts.
وَandأَبَىrefusedوَاحِدٌoneمِنْهُمْof themأَنْtoيُعِينَهُمْhelp themوَandأَنْtoيَدْخُلَenterفِيintoالْغُرْمِ4the compensationمَعَهُمْwith them
One of them refused to help them or share in the compensation with them.
فَكَانُواand they keptإِذَاwhenجَاءَcameالْمِصْبَاحُthe lampشَدُّواtiedعَيْنَيْهِhis eyesبِمِنْدِيلٍwith a handkerchief
When the lamp came, they tied his eyes with a handkerchief.
وَلَاand notيَزَالُhe continuesوَلَاand notيَزَالُونَthey continueكَذَلِكَlike thatإِلَىuntilأَنْthatيَنَامُواthey sleepوَandيُطْفِئُواthey extinguishالْمِصْبَاحَthe lamp
He and they kept on like that until they slept and extinguished the lamp.
فَإِذَاand whenأَطْفَأُوهُthey extinguished itأَطْلَقُواthey releasedعَيْنَيْهِhis eyes
And when they extinguished it, they released his eyes.
وَرَأَيْتُand I sawأَنَاIحُمَّارَةًa groupمِنْهُمْof themزُهَاءَaboutخَمْسِينَfiftyرَجُلًاmen
And I saw a group of them, about fifty men.
يَتَغَدَّوْنَthey were lunchingعَلَىonمَبَاقِلَ5vegetables
They were lunching on vegetables.
بِحَضْرَةِin the presence ofقَرْيَةِvillage ofالْأَعْرَابِthe Bedouinsفِيonطَرِيقِroad ofالْكُوفَةِKufa
In the presence of the Bedouin village, on the road to Kufa.
وَandهُمْtheyحُجَّاجٌpilgrims
And they were pilgrims.
فَلَمْand notأَرَI sawمِنْamongجَمِيعِallالْخَمْسِينَthe fiftyرَجُلَيْنِtwo menيَأْكُلَانِeatingمَعًاtogether
And I did not see among all the fifty two men eating together.
وَandهُمْtheyفِيinذَلِكَthatمُتَقَارِبُونَclosely seatedيُحَدِّثُtalkingبَعْضُهُمْsome of themبَعْضًاto others
And they were closely seated, some talking to others.
وَandهَذَاthisالَّذِيwhichرَأَيْتُهُI sawمِنْهُمْof themمِنْfromغَرِيبِstrangeمَاwhatيَتَّفِقُhappensلِلنَّاسِto people
And this which I saw of them is among the strange things that happen to people.
حَدَّثَنِيtold meمُوَيْسٌMuwaysبْنُson ofعِمْرَانَ6Imran
Muways ibn Imran told me.
قَالَhe said«"
He said: "
قَالَsaidرَجُلٌa manمِنْهُمْof themلِصَاحِبِهِto his companion
One of them said to his companion.
وَكَانَاand they wereإِمَّاeitherمُتَزَامِلَيْنِ7sharing a camelوَandإِمَّاorمُتَرَافِقَيْنِtraveling companions
And they were either sharing a camel or traveling companions.
«"لِمَwhyلَاnotنَتَطَاعَمُ8we eat together؟?
"Why do we not eat together?
فَإِنَّfor indeedيَدَhandاللهِof Godمَعَwithالْجَمَاعَةِthe groupوَandفِيinالِاجْتِمَاعِgatheringالْبَرَكَةُblessing
For the hand of God is with the group, and in gathering there is blessing."
وَandمَاnotزَالُواthey keptيَقُولُونَsaying
And they kept saying.
«"طَعَامُfood ofالِاثْنَيْنِtwoلَاnotيَكْفِيsufficesالثَّلَاثَةَthreeوَandطَعَامُfood ofالثَّلَاثَةِthreeلَاnotيَكْفِيsufficesالْأَرْبَعَةَfour
The food of two does not suffice three, and the food of three does not suffice four."
فَقَالَand saidلَهُto himصَاحِبُهُhis companion
And his companion said to him.
«"لَوْلَاif notأَعْلَمُI knowأَنَّكَthat youآكِلٌeatingمِنِّيfrom meلَأَدْخَلْتُI would have includedلَكَfor youهَذَاthisالْكَلَامَspeechفِيinبَابِchapter ofالنَّصِيحَةِadvice
"If I did not know that you would eat from me, I would have included this speech in the category of advice."
فَلَمَّاand whenكَانَwasالْغَدُthe next dayوَandأَعَادَrepeatedعَلَيْهِto himالْقَوْلَthe statement
And when the next day came, and he repeated the statement to him.
قَالَhe saidلَهُto him«"يَاOعَبْدَservant ofاللهِGod
He said to him: "O servant of God.
مَعَكَwith youرَغِيفٌa loafوَandمَعِيwith meرَغِيفٌa loaf
You have a loaf, and I have a loaf.
وَandلَوْلَاif notأَنَّكَthat youتُرِيدُwantالشَّرَّevilمَاnotكَانَwould beحِرْصُكَyour eagernessعَلَىforمُؤَاكَلَتِيeating with me
And if it were not that you intend evil, your eagerness to eat with me would not be.
تُرِيدُyou wantالْحَدِيثَconversationوَandالْمُؤَانَسَةَcompanionship؟?
Do you want conversation and companionship?
اجْعَلِmakeالطَّبَقَthe plateوَاحِدًاoneوَandيَكُونُbeرَغِيفُloaf ofكُلِّeachمِنَّاof usقُدَّامَin front ofصَاحِبِهِhis companion
Make the plate one, and let each of us have his loaf in front of his companion.
وَandمَاnotأَشُكُّI doubtأَنَّكَthat youإِذَاwhenأَكَلْتَyou eatرَغِيفَكَyour loafوَandنِصْفَhalfرَغِيفِيmy loaf
And I have no doubt that if you eat your loaf and half my loaf.

Vegetables: edible greens.
- 6.مُوَيْسُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ: رَاوٍ مِنْ رُوَاةِ الْأَخْبَارِ.
Muways ibn Imran: a transmitter of reports.
- 7.الْمُتَزَامِلَانِ: اللَّذَانِ يَتَعَاوَنَانِ فِي رُكُوبِ بَعِيرٍ وَاحِدٍ بِالتَّنَاوُبِ.
Sharing a camel: two who take turns riding one camel.
- 8.التَّطَاعُمُ: أَنْ يَأْكُلَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْ طَعَامِ الْآخَرِ.
Eating together: that each eats from the other's food.
