الزَّكَاةُthe almsوَandالْخَلَفُthe compensation
Alms and compensation.
قَالَhe saidوَandسَمِعَheardرَجُلٌa manمِنَfromالْمَرَاوِزَةِthe people of Marvالْحَسَنَal-Hasanوَwhileهُوَheيَحُثُّurgingالنَّاسَthe peopleعَلَىtowardsالْمَعْرُوفِthe goodوَandيَأْمُرُcommandingبِالصَّدَقَةِwith charityوَandيَقُولُsaying
He said: A man from the people of Marv heard al-Hasan while he was urging people towards good, commanding charity, and saying...
«"مَاnotنَقَصَdecreasedمَالٌwealthقَطُّeverمِنْfromزَكَاةٍalms»"وَandيَعِدُهُمْpromising themسُرْعَةَthe swiftnessالْخَلَفِof compensation
"Wealth never decreases from alms," and he promised them swift compensation.
فَـand soتَصَدَّقَgave in charityالْمَرْوَزِيُّthe man from Marvبِـwithمَالِهِhis wealthكُلِّهِall of itفَـandافْتَقَرَbecame poorفَـandانْتَظَرَhe waitedسَنَةًa yearوَandسَنَةًa year
So the man from Marv gave all his wealth in charity and became poor, so he waited year after year.
فَـandلَمَّاwhenلَمْnotيَرَhe sawشَيْئًاanythingبَكَرَhe went earlyعَلَىtoالْحَسَنِal-Hasanفَـandقَالَsaid
And when he saw nothing, he went early to al-Hasan and said...
«"حَسَنٌHasanمَاwhatصَنَعْتَyou didبِيto me؟?
"Hasan, what have you done to me?
ضَمِنْتَyou guaranteedلِيto meالْخَلَفَthe compensationفَـandأَنْفَقْتُI spentعَلَىonعِدَتِكَyour promiseوَandأَنَاIالْيَوْمَtodayمُذْsinceكَذَاsuchوَandكَذَاsuchسَنَةًyearsأَنْتَظِرُI am waitingمَاwhatوَعَدْتَyou promisedلَاnotأَرَىI seeمِنْهُfrom itقَلِيلًاlittleوَandلَاnotكَثِيرًاmuch
You guaranteed me compensation, so I spent on your promise, and today, for so many years, I am waiting for what you promised; I see neither little nor much from it.
هَذَاthisيَحِلُّis permissibleلَكَfor you؟?اللِّصُّthe thiefكَانَwasيَصْنَعُdoingبِيto meأَكْثَرَmoreمِنْthanهَذَاthis»"
Is this permissible for you? The thief used to do more to me than this.
وَandالْخَلَفُthe compensationيَكُونُisمُعَجَّلًاimmediateوَandمُؤَجَّلًاdeferred
And compensation can be immediate or deferred.
وَandمَنْwhoeverتَصَدَّقَgives charityوَandتَشَرَّطَstipulatesالشُّرُوطَthe conditionsاسْتَحَقَّdeservesالْحِرْمَانَdeprivation
And whoever gives charity and stipulates conditions deserves deprivation.
وَandلَوْifكَانَit wereهَذَاthisعَلَىaccording toمَاwhatتَوَهَّمَهُhe imaginedالْمَرْوَزِيُّthe man from Marvلَكَانَتْthen would beالْمِحْنَةُthe trialفِيهِin itسَاقِطَةًfallenوَandلَتَرَكَand would leaveالنَّاسُthe peopleالتِّجَارَةَtradeوَandلَمَاnotبَقِيَwould remainفَقِيرٌa poor personوَandلَذَهَبَتْand would goالْعِبَادَةُworship
And if this were as the man from Marv imagined, then the trial would be removed, and people would leave trade, and no poor person would remain, and worship would disappear.
وَandقِيلَit was saidأَصْبَحَbecameثُمَامَةُThumamaشَدِيدَsevereالْغَمِّgriefحِينَwhenاحْتَرَقَتْburnedدَارُهُhis house
And it was said: Thumama became severely grieved when his house burned down.
وَandكَانَhe wasكُلَّمَاwheneverدَخَلَenteredعَلَيْهِupon himإِنْسَانٌa personقَالَsaidالْحَرِيقُthe fireسَرِيعُswiftالْخَلَفِof compensation
And whenever a person entered upon him, he would say, "The fire is swift in compensation."
فَـandلَمَّاwhenكَثُرَbecame muchذَلِكَthatالْقَوْلُthe sayingمِنْهُمْfrom themقَالَhe said
And when that saying became frequent from them, he said...
«"فَـsoاسْتَحْرَقَburnاللهُGod١1»"اللَّهُمَّO GodإِنِّيIأَسْتَحْرِقُكَask You to burnفَـsoأَحْرِقْburnكُلَّeverythingشَيْءٍthingلَنَاfor us
"So let God burn (1). O God, I ask You to burn, so burn everything for us."
[الْإِقْتِصَادُmoderationفِيinلُبْسِwearingالْأَخْفَافِthe boots]
[Moderation in wearing boots]
وَandلَيْسَnotهَذَاthisالْحَدِيثُthe hadithمِنْfromحَدِيثِhadith ofالْمَرَاوِزَةِthe people of Marvوَandلَكِنَّاbut weضَمَمْنَاهُattached itإِلَىtoمَاwhatيُشَاكِلُهُresembles it
And this hadith is not from the hadiths of the people of Marv, but we attached it to what resembles it.
قَالَhe saidسَجَّادَةُSajjadaوَandهُوَheأَبُوAbuسَعِيدٍSa'idسَجَّادَةُSajjada
He said: Sajjada, and he is Abu Sa'id Sajjada.
نَاسٌpeopleمِنَfromالْمَرَاوِزَةِthe people of Marvإِذَاwhenلَبِسُواthey woreالْخِفَافَthe boots٢2فِيinالسِّتَّةِthe sixالْأَشْهُرِmonthsالَّتِيwhichلَاnotيَنْزِعُونَthey take offفِيهَاin themخِفَافَهُمْtheir bootsيَمْشُونَthey walkعَلَىon
People from the people of Marv, when they wear boots (2) during the six months in which they do not take off their boots, they walk on...
