الْعَذْبُthe fresh (water)عَلَيْنَاfor usمَئُونَةٌ1a burden
The fresh water was a burden for us ⟦1⟧.
فَكُنَّاand we wereنَمْزِجُmixingمِنْهُfrom itلِلْحِمَارِfor the donkey
We used to mix some of it for the donkey.
فَاعْتَلَّand it became illمِنْهُfrom it،,
and it became ill from it,
وَانْتَفَضَand it rebelledعَلَيْنَاagainst usمِنْbecause ofأَجْلِهِit؛;
and it rebelled against us because of it;
فَصِرْنَاso we became،,بَعْدَafterذَلِكَthat،,نَسْقِيهِgiving it to drinkالْعَذْبَfresh (water)صِرْفًاpure
So after that, we gave it pure fresh water to drink.
وَكُنْتُand I wasأَنَاIوَالنَّعْجَةُ2and the eweكَثِيرًاoftenمَاwhat
And the ewe ⟦2⟧ and I often...
نَغْتَسِلُwe batheبِالْعَذْبِwith fresh (water)مَخَافَةَfearingأَنْthatيَعْتَرِيَafflictsجُلُودَنَاour skinsمِنْهُfrom it
we bathed with fresh water, fearing that it might afflict our skins...
مِثْلُlikeمَاwhatاعْتَرَىafflictedجَوْفَthe insideالْحِمَارِof the donkey
like what afflicted the donkey's inside.
فَكَانَand it wasذَلِكَthatالْمَاءُwaterالْعَذْبُfreshالصَّافِيpureيَذْهَبُgoesبَاطِلًاin vain
And that pure fresh water was going to waste.
ثُمَّthenانْفَتَحَopenedلِيfor meفِيهِin itبَابٌa doorمِنَofالْإِصْلَاحِimprovement
Then a door of improvement opened for me in it.
فَعَمَدْتُso I set outإِلَىtoذَلِكَthatالْمُتَوَضَّأِplace of ablution
So I went to that place of ablution.
فَجَعَلْتُand I madeفِيinنَاحِيَةٍa sideمِنْهُof itحُفْرَةًa pit
And I made in one side of it a pit,
وَصَهْرَجْتُهَا3and I lined it with cement،,
and I plastered it with cement ⟦3⟧,
وَمَلَّسْتُهَاand smoothed it،,حَتَّىuntilصَارَتْit becameكَأَنَّهَاas if it wereصَخْرَةٌa rockمَنْقُورَةٌcarved
and smoothed it until it became as if it were a carved rock.
وَصَوَّبْتُand I directedإِلَيْهَاtowards itالْمَسِيلَthe drain
And I directed the drain towards it.
فَنَحْنُso weالْآنَnowإِذَاwhenاغْتَسَلْنَاwe bathed
So now, when we bathe,
صَارَbecomesالْمَاءُthe waterإِلَيْهَاto itصَافِيًاpure،,لَمْnotيُخَالِطْهُmixes with itشَيْءٌanything
the water goes to it pure, nothing mixes with it.
وَلَوْلَاand if not forالتَّعَبُّدُthe devotionلَكَانَwould beجِلْدُthe skinالْمُتَغَوِّطِ4of the one who defecatesأَحَقَّmore deservingبِالنَّتَنِof stench
And were it not for devotion, the skin of the one who defecates ⟦4⟧ would be more deserving of stench
مِنْthanجِلْدِthe skinالْجُنُبِ5of the one in major impurity،,
than the skin of the one in major impurity ⟦5⟧,
فَمَقَادِيرُfor measuresطِيبِof goodnessالْجُلُودِof skinsوَاحِدَةٌone،,وَالْمَاءُand the waterعَلَىonحَالِهِits state
for the measures of skin goodness are the same, and water is as it is.
وَالْحِمَارُand the donkeyأَيْضًاalsoلَاnotتَقَزُّزَ6disgustلَهُfor it
And the donkey also has no disgust ⟦6⟧ for it
مِنْfromمَاءِwaterالْجَنَابَةِof major impurity،,
from the water of major impurity,
وَلَيْسَand there is notعَلَيْنَاupon usحَرَجٌany sinفِيinسَقْيِهِgiving it to drinkمِنْهُfrom it
and there is no sin upon us in giving it to drink from it.
وَمَاand notعَلَيْنَاupon usأَنْthatكِتَابًاa bookحَرَّمَهُforbade it،,وَلَاnorسُنَّةٌa Sunnahنَهَتْprohibitedعَنْهُit
And no book forbade it, nor a Sunnah prohibited it.
فَرَبِحْنَاso we gainedهَذِهِthisمُنْذُsinceأَيَّامٍdays
So we have gained this for days.
وَأَسْقَطْنَاand we have removedمَئُونَةًa burdenعَنِfromالنَّفْسِthe selfوَالْمَالِand the wealth
And we have removed a burden from the self and the wealth.
قَالَsaidالْقَوْمُthe people::
The people said:
هَذَاthisبِتَوْفِيقِby the successاللهِof Allah،,وَمَنِّهِand His favor
This is by the success of Allah and His favor.

Ma'unah: burden, i.e. cost and hardship.
- 2.النَّعْجَةُ: الْأُنْثَى مِنَ الضَّأْنِ.
The ewe: the female sheep.
- 3.صَهْرَجْتُهَا: طَيَّنْتُهَا بِالنُّورَةِ وَالْآجُرِّ.
I plastered it: I lined it with lime and brick.
- 4.الْمُتَغَوِّطُ: الَّذِي يَتَغَوَّطُ أَيْ يُحْدِثُ الْغَائِطَ.
The one who defecates: the one who relieves himself.
- 5.الْجُنُبُ: الَّذِي أَصَابَتْهُ الْجَنَابَةُ.
The one in major impurity: the one who has had sexual intercourse.
- 6.تَقَزُّزٌ: تَنَافُرٌ وَتَبَاعُدٌ عَنِ الشَّيْءِ بِسَبَبِ قَذَرِهِ.
Disgust: aversion and recoiling from something due to its filth.
