مَوْضِعًاa placeلِانْتِفَاعٍfor benefitبِهِwith itوَصَارَand becameكَيَّةًa brandingفِي1inقَلْبِيmy heart
It became a place of benefit, and became a branding in my heart.
وَقَذًى2and a speckفِيinعَيْنِيmy eyeوَهَمًّاand a worryلَاnotيَزَالُceasesيَعُودُنِيto return to me
And a speck in my eye, and a worry that does not cease to return to me.
قَالَHe saidفَلَمْand notأَلْبَثْI stayedأَنْthatرَأَيْتُهَاI saw herقَطُّeverطَلَّقَتْshe divorcedوَتَبَسَّمَتْand smiled
He said: 'I had not stayed long when I saw her divorced and smiling.'
فَقُلْتُSo I saidيَنْبَغِيit shouldأَنْthatيَكُونَbeقَدِalreadyاِنْفَتَحَopenedلَكِfor youبَابُthe doorالرَّأْيِof opinionفِيinالدَّمِthe blood
So I said: 'The door of insight into the blood should have opened for you.'
قَالَتْShe saidأَجَلْYesذَكَرْتُI rememberedأَنَّthatعِنْدِيwith meقُدُورًا3potsشَأْمِيَّةًSyrianجُدُدًاnew
She said: 'Yes, I remembered that I have new Syrian pots.'
وَقَدْand indeedزَعَمُواthey claimedأَنَّهُthat itلَيْسَnotشَيْءٌsomethingأَدْبَغُ4more tanningوَلَاand notأَزِيدُmore increasingفِيinقُوَّتِهَاtheir strengthمِنَthanالتَّلْطِيخِsmearingبِالدَّمِwith the bloodالْحَارِّhotالدَّسِمِgreasy
And they have claimed that nothing is more tanning or more increasing in their strength than smearing with hot greasy blood.
وَقَدِand indeedاسْتَرَحْتُI restedالْآنَnowإِذْwhenوَقَعَfellكُلُّeverythingشَيْءٍthingمَوْقِعَهُits place
And now I am at ease, since everything has fallen into its place.
قَالَHe saidثُمَّthenلَقِيتُهَاI met herبَعْدَafterسِتَّةِsixأَشْهُرٍmonths
He said: 'Then I met her after six months.'
فَقُلْتُSo I saidلَهَاto herكَيْفَhowكَانَwasقَدِيدُ5the jerked meatتِلْكَthatالشَّاةِewe
So I said to her: 'How was the jerky of that ewe?'
قَالَتْShe saidبِأَبِيwith my fatherأَنْتَyouلَمْnotيَجِئْcomeوَقْتُtimeالْقَدِيدِof jerkyبَعْدُyet
She said: 'By my father, the time for jerky has not come yet.'
لَنَاfor usفِيinالشَّحْمِthe fatوَالْإِلْيَةِand the tailوَالْجُنُوبِ6and the sideوَالْعَظْمِand the boneالْمُعَرَّقِmarrowedوَفِيand inغَيْرِotherذَلِكَthatمَعَاشٌsubsistence
We have sustenance in the fat, the tail, the side, the marrow bone, and in other than that.
وَلِكُلِّand for everythingشَيْءٍthingإِبَّانٌ7a season
And everything has its proper season.
فَقَبَضَThen graspedصَاحِبُthe ownerالْحِمَارِof the donkeyوَالْمَاءِand the waterالْعَذْبِsweetقَبْضَةًa handfulمِنْofحَصًىpebbles
Then the owner of the donkey and the sweet water took a handful of pebbles.
ثُمَّthenضَرَبَstruckبِهَاwith themالْأَرْضَthe ground
Then he struck the ground with them.
ثُمَّthenقَالَhe saidلَاnotتَعْلَمُyou knowأَنَّكَthat youمِنَamongالْمُسْرِفِينَthe wasteful
Then he said: 'You do not know that you are among the wasteful.'
حَتَّىuntilتَسْمَعَyou hearبِأَخْبَارِthe news ofالصَّالِحِينَthe righteous
Until you hear the stories of the righteous.

More tanning: meaning stronger for tanning and more improving for the leather.
- 5.قَدِيدٌ: لَحْمٌ يُقَطَّعُ وَيُجَفَّفُ فِي الشَّمْسِ أَوِ النَّارِ
Jerky: meat cut and dried in the sun or fire.
- 6.الْجُنُوبُ: جَمْعُ جَنْبٍ، وَهُوَ جَانِبُ الشَّيْءِ
Sides: plural of side, meaning the side of something.
- 7.إِبَّانٌ: وَقْتٌ وَحِينٌ، وَالْجَمْعُ أَبَابِينُ
Season: time and hour; the plural is 'ababin.'
