لِامْرَأَتِيfor my wife

for my wife.

وَقَدْand indeedزِدْتُI increasedفِيinالْكُمَّيْنِthe two sleevesوَحَذَفْتُand I removedالْمَقَادِيمَ1the front parts

And I have increased the two sleeves and removed the front parts. (1)

فَإِنْthen ifأَرَدْتَyou wantedبَعْدَafterهَذَاthisكُلِّهِall of itأَنْthatتَأْخُذَهُyou take itفَخُذْهُthen take it

Then if you want after all this to take it, take it.

فَقَالَand he said«نَعَمْ"YesآخُذُهُI take itلِأَنَّهُbecause itيَصْلُحُis suitableلِأَمْرَأَتِيfor my wifeكَمَاjust asيَصْلُحُit is suitableلِأَمْرَأَتِكَfor your wife»

He said, "Yes, I take it, because it is suitable for my wife just as it is suitable for your wife."

قَالَhe said«فَإِنَّهُ"Then it isعِنْدَwithالصَّبَّاغِthe dyer»

He said, "Then it is with the dyer."

قَالَhe said«فَهَاتِهِ"Then bring it»

He said, "Then bring it."

قَالَhe said«لَيْسَ"NotأَنَاIأَسْلَمْتُهُdelivered itإِلَيْهِto him»

He said, "It is not I who delivered it to him."

فَلَمَّاand whenعَلِمَhe knewأَنَّهُthat itقَدْindeedوَقَعَhappenedقَالَhe said«بِأَبِي"May my fatherأَنْتَbe your ransomوَأُمِّيand my motherيَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللهِof Allahصَلَّىmay He blessاللهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peaceحَيْثُwhereيَقُولُhe saysجُمِعَwas gatheredالشَّرُّevilكُلُّهُall of itفِيinبَيْتٍa houseوَأُغْلِقَand it was closedعَلَيْهِupon itفَكَانَand it wasمِفْتَاحُهُits keyالسُّكْرَintoxication»

And when he knew that it had happened, he said, "May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, where he says: All evil was gathered in a house and closed upon it, and its key was intoxication."

[[لَيْلَىLaylaالنَّاعِطِيَّةُan-Na'itiyya:]:]

[Layla an-Na'itiyya:]

وَأَمَّاand as forلَيْلَىLaylaالنَّاعِطِيَّةُan-Na'itiyyaصَاحِبَةُthe companionالْغَالِيَةِof the extremeمِنَofالشِّيعَةِthe Shi'aفَإِنَّهَاthen sheمَاnotزَالَتْceasedتَرْقَعُto patchقَمِيصًاa shirtلَهَاof hersوَتَرْبِسُهُand wears itحَتَّىuntilصَارَbecameالْقَمِيصُthe shirtالرِّقَاعَpatchesوَذَهَبَand went awayالْقَمِيصُthe shirtالْأَوَّلُoriginal

And as for Layla an-Na'itiyya, the companion of the extreme Shi'a, she kept patching a shirt of hers and wearing it until the shirt became patches and the original shirt went away.

وَرَفَتْand she patchedكِسَاءَهَاher cloakوَلَبِسَتْهُand wore itحَتَّىuntilصَارَتْshe becameلَاnotتَلْبَسُshe wearsإِلَّاexceptالرَّفْوَthe patchingوَذَهَبَand went awayجَمِيعُallالْكِسَاءِ2of the cloak

And she patched her cloak and wore it until she wore nothing but patching, and all of the cloak went away. (2)

وَسَمِعَتْand she heardقَوْلَthe sayingالشَّاعِرِof the poetإِلْبَسْ"Wearقَمِيصَكَyour shirtمَاas long asاهْتَدَيْتَyou findلِجَيْبِهِits collarفَإِذَاand ifأَضَلَّكَit confuses youجَيْبُهُits collarفَاسْتَبْدِلْthen replace it»

And she heard the saying of the poet: "Wear your shirt as long as you find its collar; and if its collar confuses you, then replace it."

فَقَالَتْand she said«إِنِّي"Then Iإِذًاthenلَخَرْقَاءُam indeed clumsyأَنَاIوَاللهِby AllahأَحْوَصُI closeالْفَتْقَthe tearوَأَفْتُقُand I tearالْفَتْقَthe tearوَأَرْقَعُand I patchالْخَرْقَthe holeوَأَخْرِقُand I holeالْخَرْقَthe hole»

And she said, "Then I am indeed clumsy. By Allah, I close the tear, and I tear the tear, and I patch the hole, and I hole the hole."

[[وَلِيدٌWalidالْقُرَشِيُّal-Qurashi:]:]

وَمَضَيْتُand I wentأَنَاIوَأَبُوand AbuإِسْحَاقَIshaqالنَّظَّامِan-Nazzamوَعَمْرُوand AmrبْنُibnنَهْيُوِيNahyawiنُرِيدُwe wantالْحَدِيثَthe discussionفِيinالْجَبَّانِ4the cemetery

And I went, I and Abu Ishaq an-Nazzam and Amr ibn Nahyawi, wanting to have a discussion in the cemetery. (4)

وَلِنَتَنَاظَرَand to debateفِيonشَيْءٍa matterمِنَofالْكَلَامِtheology

And to debate on a matter of theology.

فَمَرَرْنَاand we passed byبِمَجْلِسِthe sitting place ofوَلِيدٍWalidالْقُرَشِيِّal-Qurashiوَكَانَand he wasعَلَىonطَرِيقِنَاour wayفَلَمَّاand whenرَآَنَاhe saw usتَمَشَّىhe walkedمَعَنَاwith us

And we passed by the sitting place of Walid al-Qurashi, and he was on our way. When he saw us, he walked with us.

فَلَمَّاand whenجَاوَزْنَاwe passedالْخَنْدَقَthe trenchجَلَسْنَاwe satفِيin

And when we passed the trench, we sat in...

    Al-maqadim: plural of muqaddam, which is the front part of a garment.
