الْيَوْمَ؟Today?قَالُوا:They said:سَمْنٌ.Clarified butter.

Today? They said: Clarified butter.

قَالَ:He said:وَمَاAnd whatكَانَwasيُصْنَعُdoneبِهِ؟with it?

He said: And what was done with it?

قَالُوا:They said:كُنَّاWe wereفِيinالشِّتَاءِwinterنُلْقِيwe would throwلَهُfor himفِيinالْبُرْمَةِ1the potشَيْئًاsomethingمِنْofدَقِيقٍflourنَعْمَلُهُwe prepared itلَهُ،for him,

They said: In winter we would put into the pot ⟦1⟧ some flour that we prepared for him.

فَكَانَAnd it wasرُبَّمَاperhapsبُرِّمَ2mixedبِشَيْءٍwith somethingمِنْofسَمْنٍ.clarified butter.

And it was sometimes mixed ⟦2⟧ with some clarified butter.

قَالَ:He said:يَقُولُونَThey sayوَلَاand notيَفْعَلُونَ.they do.

He said: They say and do not do.

السَّمْنُClarified butterأَخُوis brotherالْعَسَلِ.of honey.

Clarified butter is the brother of honey.

وَهَلْAnd didأَفْسَدَcorruptالنَّاسَpeopleأَمْوَالَهُمْtheir wealthإِلَّاexceptفِيinالسَّمْنِclarified butterوَالْعَسَلِ؟and honey?

And did people's wealth become corrupted except by clarified butter and honey?

وَاللهِBy God,إِنِّيverily Iلَوْلَاif notأَنَّthatلِلْجَرَّةِto the jarثَمَنًاa priceلَمَاwould notكَسَرْتُهَاI have broken itإِلَّاexceptعَلَىuponقَبْرِهِ.his grave.

By God, were it not that the jar has a price, I would not have broken it except over his grave.

قَالُوا:They said:فَخَرَجَAnd he went outفَوْقَaboveأَبِيهِhis fatherوَمَاand notكُنَّاwe wereنَظُنُّwe thinkأَنَّthatفَوْقَهُabove himمَزِيدًا.an increase.

They said: And he went beyond his father, and we did not think there was anyone above him.

الْمُخْطِرَانِيُّ:The Mukhtirani:الَّذِيone whoيَأْتِيكَcomes to youفِيinزِيٍّattireنَاسِكٍ،of an ascetic,وَيُرِيكَand shows youأَنَّthatبَابَهُ3his mouthقَدْindeedقُوِّرَwas hollowed outلِسَانُهُhis tongueمِنْfromأَصْلِهِits rootلِأَنَّهُbecause heكَانَwasمُؤَذِّنًاa muezzinهُنَاكَ.there.

The Mukhtirani: one who comes to you in the garb of an ascetic, and shows you that his mouth ⟦3⟧ has had his tongue cut out from its root because he was a muezzin there.

ثُمَّThenيَفْتَحُhe opensفَاهُhis mouthكَمَاasيَصْنَعُdoesمِنْone whoيَتَثَاءَبُ،yawns,فَلَاand notتَرَىyou seeلَهُfor himلِسَانًاa tongueالْبَتَّةَ.at all.

Then he opens his mouth as one who yawns does, and you see no tongue for him at all.

وَلِسَانُهُAnd his tongueفِيinالْحَقِيقَةِrealityكَلِسَانِlike the tongueالثَّوْرِ.of the bull.

And his tongue is in reality like the tongue of a bull.

وَأَنَاAnd Iأَحَدُam oneمَنْof those whoخُدِعَwere deceivedبِذَلِكَ.by that.

And I am one of those who were deceived by that.

وَلَاAnd notبُدَّavoidableلِلْمُخْطِرَانِيِّfor the Mukhtiraniأَنْthatيَكُونَthere beمَعَهُwith himوَاحِدٌoneيُعَبِّرُwho interpretsعَنْهُ،for him,أَوْorلَوْحٌa tabletأَوْorقِرْطَاسٌa paperقَدْindeedكُتِبَhas been writtenفِيهِon itشَأْنُهُhis matterوَقِصَّتُهُ.and his story.

And it is necessary for the Mukhtirani to have with him someone who interprets for him, or a tablet or paper on which his affair and story are written.

وَالْكَاغَانِيُّ:And the Kaghani:الَّذِيone whoيَتَجَنَّنُpretends madnessوَيَتَصَارَعُand wrestlesوَيَزْبُدُ4and foams،,حَتَّىuntilلَاnotيَشُكَّhe doubtsأَنَّهُthat heمَجْنُونٌmadلَاnoدَوَاءَcureلَهُ،for him,لِشِدَّةِbecause of the severityمَاof whatيَنْزِلُbefallsبِنَفْسِهِ،himself,وَحَتَّىand untilيَتَعَجَّبَhe marvelsمِنْatبَقَاءِthe survivalمِثْلِهِof one like himعَلَىonمِثْلِlikeعِلَّتِهِ.his condition.

And the Kaghani: one who pretends madness, wrestles, and foams ⟦4⟧, until no one doubts that he is incurably mad, due to the severity of what he inflicts upon himself, and until one marvels that someone like him survives such a condition.

--وَالْبَانْوَانُ:And the Banwan:الَّذِيone whoيَقِفُstandsعَلَىatالْبَابِthe doorوَيَسُلُّand removesالْغَلَقَ5the lock،,وَيَقُولُ:and says:بَانُوا.Banu.

- And the Banwan: one who stands at the door and draws the bolt ⟦5⟧, and says: Banu.

وَتَفْسِيرُAnd its interpretationذَلِكَof thatبِالْعَرَبِيَّةِ:in Arabic:يَاOمَوْلَايَ.my master.

And its interpretation in Arabic: O my master.

--وَالْقُرْسِيُّ:And the Qurasi:الَّذِيone whoيَعْصِبُ6bindsسَاقَهُhis legوَذِرَاعَهُand his armعَصْبًاwith a tight bandageشَدِيدًا،severely,وَيَبِيتُand he spends the night

- And the Qurasi: one who binds ⟦6⟧ his leg and arm with a tight bandage, and spends the night

    The burma: a pot made of stone or pottery.

    Burrima: it was mixed and prepared with clarified butter.

    His door: meaning his mouth.

  4. 4.يَزْبُدُ: يُخْرِجُ الزَّبَدَ مِنْ فَمِهِ.

    Yazbudu: he brings out foam from his mouth.

  5. 5.الْغَلَقُ: قِطْعَةُ الْحَدِيدِ الَّتِي يُقْفَلُ بِهَا الْبَابُ.

    The ghalq: the piece of iron by which the door is locked.

  6. 6.يَعْصِبُ: يَلُفُّ وَيَشُدُّ بِالْعِصَابَةِ.

    Ya'sibu: he wraps and tightens with a bandage.
