وَالْإِسْطِيلُAnd Al-Isṭīlهُوَhe isالْمُتَعَامِيthe one who pretends to be blindإِنْifشَاءَhe willsأَرَاكَhe shows youأَنَّهُthat heمُنْخَسِفُsunkenالْعَيْنَيْنِthe two eyesوَإِنْand ifشَاءَhe willsأَرَاكَhe shows youأَنَّthatبِهِمَاin themمَاءٌwaterوَإِنْand ifشَاءَhe willsأَرَاكَhe shows youأَنَّهُthat heلَاnotيُبْصِرُhe seesلِخَسْفٍdue to sunkennessوَلِرَيْحِand due to wateringالسَّبَلِ1of the eyes
And Al-Isṭīl: he is the one who pretends to be blind: if he wishes, he shows you that his eyes are sunken, and if he wishes, he shows you that there is water in them, and if he wishes, he shows you that he does not see, due to sunkenness and watering of the eyes [1].
وَالْمَزِيدِيُّAnd Al-Mazīdīالَّذِيthe one whoيَدُورُcirculatesوَمَعَهُand with himالدُّرَيْهِمَاتُsmall dirhamsوَيَقُولُand he saysهَذِهِtheseدَرَاهِمُdirhamsقَدْindeedجُمِعَتْwere collectedلِيfor meفِيinثَمَنِpriceقَطِيفَةٍ2of a velvet clothفَزِيدُونِيso increase meفِيهَاin itرَحِمَكَmay have mercy on youاللَّهُGod
And Al-Mazīdī: the one who circulates with small dirhams and says: 'These are dirhams that have been collected for me as the price of a velvet cloth [2], so increase me in it, may God have mercy on you.'
وَرُبَّمَاand perhapsاحْتَمَلَhe carriedصَبِيًّاa boyعَلَىٰonأَنَّهُthat heلَقِيطٌa foundlingوَرُبَّمَاand perhapsطَلَبَhe askedفِيforالْكَفَنِthe shroud
And perhaps he carried a boy pretending that he was a foundling, and perhaps he asked for the shroud.
وَالْمُسْتَعْرِضُAnd Al-Mustaʿriḍالَّذِيthe one whoيُعَارِضُكَintercepts youوَهُوَand he isذُوofهَيْئَةٍappearanceوَفِيand inثِيَابٍclothesصَالِحَةٍgood
And Al-Mustaʿriḍ: the one who intercepts you, having a dignified appearance and wearing good clothes.
وَكَأَنَّهُand as if heقَدْindeedمَاتَdiedمِنَfromالْحَيَاءِshynessوَيَخَافُand he fearsأَنْthatيَرَاهُsees himمَعْرِفَةٌ3an acquaintance
As if he had died from shyness, and he fears that an acquaintance might see him [3].
ثُمَّthenيَعْتَرِضُكَhe intercepts youاعْتِرَاضًاan interceptionوَيُكَلِّمُكَand he speaks to youخَفِيًّاquietly
Then he intercepts you, and speaks to you quietly.
وَالْمُقَدِّسُAnd Al-Muqaddisالَّذِيthe one whoيَقِفُstandsعَلَىatالْمَيِّتِthe deadيَسْأَلُaskingفِيforكَفَنِهِhis shroudوَيَقِفُand he standsفِيonطَرِيقِthe roadمَكَّةَof Meccaعَلَىatالْحِمَارِthe donkeyالْمَيِّتِdeadوَالْبَعِيرِand the camelالْمَيِّتِdeadفَيَدَّعِيso he claimsأَنَّهُthat itكَانَwasلَهُhisوَيَزْعُمُand he pretendsأَنَّهُthat heقَدْindeedأُحْصِرَ4was detained
And Al-Muqaddis: the one who stands at the dead asking for his shroud, and stands on the road to Mecca at a dead donkey or a dead camel, claiming that it was his, and pretending that he was detained [4].
وَقَدْand indeedتَعَلَّمَhe learnedلُغَةَthe languageالْخُرَاسَانِيَّةِof Khorasanوَالْيَمَانِيَّةِand of Yemenوَالْإِفْرِيقِيَّةِand of Africaوَتَعَرَّفَand he became acquainted withتِلْكَthoseالْمُدُنِcitiesوَالسِّكَكِand streetsوَالرِّجَالِand men
And he has learned the languages of Khorasan, Yemen, and Africa, and become acquainted with those cities, streets, and men.
وَهُوَand heمَتَىwheneverشَاءَhe willsكَانَhe wasإِفْرِيقِيًّاAfricanوَمَتَىand wheneverشَاءَhe willsكَانَhe wasمِنْfromأَهْلِthe peopleفِرْغَانَةَ5of Ferganaوَمَتَىand wheneverشَاءَhe willsكَانَhe wasمِنْfromأَيِّanyمَخَالِيفِdistrictsالْيَمَنِof Yemenشَاءَhe wills
And he, whenever he wished, was an African, and whenever he wished, he was from the people of Fergana [5], and whenever he wished, he was from any district of Yemen he wanted.
وَالْمُكَدِّيُّAnd Al-Mukaddīصَاحِبُthe companionالْكُدَاءِ6of begging
And Al-Mukaddī: the one who practices begging [6].
وَالْكَعْبِيُّAnd Al-Kaʿbīأُضِيفَwas attributedإِلَىtoابْنِthe sonأَبِيof AbuكَعْبٍKaʿbالْمَوْصِلِيِّof Mosulوَكَانَand he wasعَرِيفُهُمْtheir chiefبَعْدَafterخَالَوَيْهِKhālawayhسَنَةًa yearعَلَىatمَاءٍwater
And Al-Kaʿbī: he was attributed to Ibn Abī Kaʿb of Mosul, and he was their chief after Khālawayh for a year at a watering place.
وَالزَّكُورِيُّAnd Al-Zakūrīهُوَhe isخُبْزُthe breadالصَّدَقَةِof charityكَانَit wasعَلَىatسِجِّينٍSijjīnأَوْorعَلَىatسَائِلٍa beggar
And Al-Zakūrī: it is the bread of charity, distributed at Sijjīn or to a beggar.

- 6.الْكُدَاءُ: التَّكَفُّفُ وَالتَّسَوُّلُ
Al-Kudāʾ: begging and asking.
