حَيْثُWhereيَأْمُرُhe commandsأَصْحَابَهُhis companionsوَيُنَادِيهِمْand calls them

Where he commands his companions and calls them,

أَنْthatاحْمِلُواattackعَلَىuponالْجِهَةِthe directionالْفُلَانِيَّةِso-and-so

that attack upon the so-and-so direction,

وَتَقَدَّمُواand advanceمِنْfromالْجِهَةِthe directionالْفُلَانِيَّةِso-and-so

and advance from the so-and-so direction.

وَجَعَلْنَاAnd We have placedمِنْfromبَيْنِbeforeأَيْدِيهِمْthemسَدًّاa barrier

And We have placed before them a barrier

وَمِنْand fromخَلْفِهِمْbehind themسَدًّاa barrier

and from behind them a barrier,

جَعَلْنَاWe have placedفِيinأَعْنَاقِهِمْtheir necksأَغْلَالًاshackles

We have placed shackles in their necks.

فَقَدْThusشَبَّهَhe comparedهُنَاhereإِعْرَاضَهُمْtheir turning awayعَنْfromتَدَبُّرِpondering

Thus he compared here their turning away from pondering

آيَاتِthe verses ofاللَّهِAllahعَزَّthe Mightyوَجَلَّand Majestic

the verses of Allah - the Mighty and Majestic -

بِشَخْصٍto a personطُوِّقَwho was collared withالْأَغْلَالَthe shackles

to a person collared with shackles,

أَوْorأُقِيمَتْwere erectedفِيinكُلِّeveryجِهَةٍdirection

or in every direction of his directions

مِنْofجِهَاتِهِhis directionsالسُّدُودُthe barriers

the barriers were erected

فَلَمْso he isيَعُدْno longerقَادِرًاableأَصْلًاat allعَلَىtoالرُّؤْيَةِseeوَالنَّظَرِand look

so he is no longer able at all to see and look.

وَاضْمُمْAnd drawإِلَيْكَto yourselfجَنَاحَكَyour armمِنَout ofالرَّهْبِfear

And draw to yourself your arm out of fear.

أَيْThat isاجْمَعْcollectخَاطِرَكَyour mind

That is, collect your mind,

وَدَعْand leaveاضْطِرَابَthe turbulence ofالْخَوَاطِرِthoughtsوَقَلَقَand anxiety ofالْبَالِthe heart

and leave the turbulence of thoughts and anxiety of the heart.

الْبَيَانُThe expressionبِالْإِشَارَةِby indicationالْحِسِّيَّةِsensory

[The Expression by Sensory Indication:]

وَنَظِيرُAnd similar toذَلِكَthatمَاis whatيُعْرَفُis knownفِيinمُخَاطَبَاتِaddresses ofالنَّاسِpeople

And similar to that is what is known in people's discourse

أَنَّthatأَحَدَهُمْone of themإِذَاwhenأَرَادَhe wantsتَصْوِيرَto portray

that when one of them wants to portray

شَجَاعَةَthe bravery ofشَخْصٍa personمِنَamongالْأَشْخَاصِthe people

the bravery of a person among the people,

فَإِنَّهُthen heيُشِيرُpointsإِلَىtoالسَّيْفِthe sword

then he points to the sword

وَأَنَّهُand thatيَضْرِبُhe strikesبِهَاwith itهَكَذَاlike thisوَهَكَذَاand like that

and that he strikes with it like this and like that,

يُخَطِّرُwavingبِيَدِهِwith his hand

waving with his hand,

وَلَيْسَand notالْغَرَضُthe purposeمِنْofهَذَاthisالتَّصْوِيرِportrayal

and the purpose of this portrayal is not

إِلَّاexceptذِكْرُmentioningأَنَّهُthat heيَفُوقُsurpassesجَمِيعَallالنَّاسِpeople

except mentioning that he surpasses all people

فِيinصِفَةِthe attribute ofالشَّجَاعَةِbravery

in the attribute of bravery,

وَلَوْeven ifلَمْnotيَكُنْhe wasقَدْeverأَخَذَtakenالسَّيْفَthe sword

even if he had never taken

بِيَدِهِin his handمَرَّةًonceفِيinحَيَاتِهِhis life

in his hand once in his life.

أَوْOrيَقُولُhe saysفُلَانٌso-and-so

Or so-and-so says,

يَتَحَدَّىchallengesالْعَالَامَthe worldوَيَقُولُand says

"He challenges the world and says,

أَنَاIلَاdo notأَرَىseeعَلَىonالْأَرْضِthe earthأَحَدًاanyone

I do not see on the earth anyone

يَسْتَطِيعُwho is ableأَنْtoيُبَارِزَنِيduel me

who is able to duel me,"

أَوْorأَنَّthatفُلَانًاso-and-soيَفْعَلُdoesكَذَاsuch and suchوَكَذَاand such

or that so-and-so does such and such,

وَيُشِيرُand he pointsإِلَىtoالْهَيْئَةِthe postureالَّتِيwhich

and he points to the posture which

تَكُونُisلِلْمُبَارِزِينَfor the duelistsعِنْدَatالْمُغَالَبَةِovercomingوَالتَّمَكُّنِand masteryمِنْof
