الْقُرْآنُThe Quranفِيinعَهْدِthe era ofعُثْمَانَUthmanبْنِson ofعَفَّانَAffanرَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith himعَنْهُ:and
The Quran in the era of Uthman bin Affan, may Allah be pleased with him:
وَقَدِAnd indeedانْتَسَخَcopiedعُثْمَانُUthmanبْنُson ofعَفَّانَAffan
And Uthman bin Affan copied...
- رَضِيَ- may be pleasedاللَّهُAllahعَنْهُ -with him -عِدَّةَseveralنُسَخٍcopies
- may Allah be pleased with him - several copies
مِنْfromذَلِكَthatالْمُصْحَفِcodexالْمُدَوَّنِcompiled
of that compiled codex,
وَأَرْسَلَهَاand sent themإِلَىtoالْآفَاقِthe horizons
and sent them to the horizons
حَتَّىso thatيُسْتَفَادَbenefit might be gainedمِنْfromهَذِهِtheseالْمَصَاحِفِcodicesبِعَيْنِهَاspecifically
so that benefit might be gained from these specific codices
وَيُرْجَعَand reference madeإِلَيْهَاto themوَلَاand notيُرْجَعَreference madeإِلَىtoأَيِّanyتَرْتِيبٍarrangementغَيْرِother thanتَرْتِيبِهَا.their arrangement.
and reference made to them, and no other arrangement besides their arrangement is referred to.
اسْتِهْلَالُThe opening ofالسُّوَرِthe surahsوَاخْتِتَامُهَاand their conclusionعَلَىuponطَرِيقَةِthe manner ofفَرَامِينِdecrees ofالْمُلُوكِ:the kings:
The opening of the surahs and their conclusion upon the manner of the decrees of the kings:
وَلَمَّاAnd sinceأَنَّthatأُسْلُوبَthe style ofالسُّوَرِthe surahsيُنَاسِبُsuits- تَمَاماً -- completely -أُسْلُوبَthe style ofفَرَامِينِdecrees ofالْمُلُوكِthe kingsوَالسَّلَاطِينِ،and sultans,
And since the style of the surahs completely suits the style of the decrees of kings and sultans,
فَقَدْit hasرُوعِيَbeen observedفِيهِin itبِدَايَةُthe beginning ofالسُّوَرِthe surahsوَنِهَايَتُهَاand their endطَرِيقَةُthe method ofالرَّسَائِلِlettersوَالْفَرَامِينِand decreesالسُّلْطَانِيَّةِ.sultanic.
it has been observed in the beginning and ending of the surahs the method of sultanic letters and decrees.
[تَنَوُّعُ[Diversity ofاسْتِهْلَالِopeningالسُّوَرِthe surahsوَمُحْتَوَيَاتِهَا:]and their contents:]
[Diversity of the opening of the surahs and their contents:]
فَكَمَاFor just asأَنَّthatبَعْضَsomeالرَّسَائِلِlettersتَبْدَأُbeginبِحَمْدِwith the praise ofاللَّهِAllah- تَعَالَى -- Exalted is He -وَالثَّنَاءِand extollingعَلَيْهِ،Him,
For just as some letters begin with the praise of Allah - Exalted is He - and extolling Him,
وَبَعْضَهَاand some of themبِبَيَانِwith the statement ofالْغَرَضِthe purposeالْمَقْصُودِ،intended,
and some of them with the statement of the intended purpose,
وَبَعْضَهَاand some of themبِبَيَانِwith the statement ofاسْمِthe name ofالْمُرْسِلِ،the sender,وَالْمُرْسَلِand the one sentإِلَيْهِ،to,
and some of them with the statement of the name of the sender and the recipient,
وَبَعْضَهَاand some of themتَكُونُareرَسَائِلَlettersوَخِطَابَاتٍand missivesصَغِيرَةًsmallتَغَيَّرُchangingعُنْوَانَaddressوَمَهِّدْand preamble
and some of them are small letters and missives changing address and preamble,
وَبَعْضَand someالرَّسَائِلِlettersتَكُونُareمُطَوَّلَةًlengthyوَأُخْرَىand othersمُخْتَصَرَةًconcise
and some letters are lengthy and others concise,
كَذَلِكَsimilarlyالرَّبُّthe Lord- تَبَارَكَ- Blessedوَتَعَالَى -and Exalted is He -اسْتَهَلَّopenedبَعْضَsomeالسُّوَرِsurahsبِحَمْدِهِwith His praiseوَتَسْبِيحِهِand His glorification
similarly the Lord - Blessed and Exalted is He - opened some surahs with His praise and glorification,
وَبَعْضَهَاand some of themبِبَيَانِwith the statement ofالْغَرَضِthe purposeمِنَofالتَّنْزِيلِ،the revelation,
and some of them with the statement of the purpose of revelation,
كَمَاasقَالَsaid- تَعَالَى -:- Exalted is He -:
as He - Exalted is He - said:
- {ذَلِكَ- {That isالْكِتَابُthe Bookلَاthere is noرَيْبَdoubtفِيهِin itهُدًىguidanceلِلْمُتَّقِينَ}for the righteous}
- {That is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for the righteous}
- {سُورَةٌ- {A surahأَنْزَلْنَاهَاWe have sent it downوَفَرَضْنَاهَا}and made obligatory its laws}الْآيَةُ.the ayah.
- {A surah which We have sent down and made [its provisions] obligatory} the ayah.
