وَandالْأَبْيَاتِthe verses
And the verses
وَandالَّذِيthat whichاسْتَعْمَلْنَاwe usedلِلْإِلْمَاحِto hintإِلَيْهِat itكَلِمَةَthe wordالنَّشِيدِal-nashidكَasقَدْرٍa measureمُشْتَرَكٍcommonمُطْلَقٍ،absolute,
and that which we used the word 'al-nashid' to hint at as an absolute common measure,
ثُمَّthenضَبْطُdefiningتِلْكَthoseالْأُمُورِmattersوَandالْخَصَائِصِcharacteristicsالَّتِيwhichالْتُزِمَwere adhered toبِهَاin itفِيinالْآيَاتِthe versesوَandالَّتِيwhichتُمَيِّزُهَاdistinguish itعَنْfromغَيْرِهَا،others,
then defining those matters and characteristics which were adhered to in the verses and which distinguish them from others,
فَsoكُلُّallذَلِكَthatيَحْتَاجُneedsإِلَىtoتَفْصِيلٍ،detail,
all of that needs detail,
وَandاللَّهُAllahوَلِيُّis the guardian ofالتَّوْفِيقِ.success.
and Allah is the guardian of success.
تَذَوُّقُThe tasting ofالْفِطْرَةِthe sound natureالسَّلِيمَةِ:(salimah):
Tasting of the Sound Nature:
وَandتَفْصِيلُthe detail ofهَذَاthisالْإِجْمَالِsummaryهُوَis thatأَنَّthatالْفِطْرَةَthe sound natureالسَّلِيمَةَsoundتُدْرِكُperceivesفِيinالْقَصَائِدِthe poemsالْمَوْزُونَةِmeteredالْمُقَفَّاةِrhymedوَandالْأَرَاجِيزِthe poetic piecesالْجَمِيلَةِbeautifulالرَّائِقَةِdelightfulوَandأَمْثَالِlikeذَلِكَthatمِنَfromالْكَلِمَاتِwordsالْمَوْزُونَةِmeteredمُتْعَةًa special pleasureخَاصَّةً،special,
And the detail of this summary is that the sound nature perceives in metered rhymed poems, beautiful delightful rajaz poems, and the like of metered words a special pleasure,
وَandتَتَذَوَّقُtastesحَلَاوَةًsweetnessوَandعُذُوبَةً.mellifluousness.
and tastes sweetness and mellifluousness.
[السِّرُّ[The secretفِيinتَوَافُقِthe harmony ofأَجْزَاءِparts ofالْكَلَامِ:]speech:]
[The Secret in the Harmony of the Parts of Speech:]
وَandإِذَاifتَأَمَّلْتَyou contemplateفِيinسَبَبِthe cause ofهَذَاthisالْإِدْرَاكِperceptionوَandبَحَثْتَsearchعَنِforالسِّرِّthe secretوَرَاءَbehindهَذَاthisالتَّذَوُّقِtastingتَجِدْyou will findأَنَّthatالْكَلَامَspeechإِذَاifكَانَتْitsأَجْزَاؤُهُpartsيُوَافِقُagree withبَعْضُهَاsome of themبَعْضاًothersفَthenإِنَّهُitيُنْشِئُcreatesفِيinنَفْسِthe soul ofالْمُخَاطَبِthe listenerلَذَّةًa pleasureخَاصَّةًspecialوَandيَدْعُوهُinvites himإِلَىtoانْتِظَارِanticipateمِثْلِهِthe like of itوَandالشَّوْقِyearnإِلَيْهِ،for it,
And if you contemplate the cause of this perception and search for the secret behind this tasting, you will find that if the parts of speech agree with one another, it creates in the listener's soul a special pleasure and invites him to anticipate the like of it and yearn for it,
فَsoإِذَاifوَرَدَthere comesبَعْدَafterذَلِكَthatالْبَيْتُthe verseالثَّانِيsecond--مَثَلًاfor example--مَعَwithذَلِكَthatالتَّوَافُقِharmonyوَandالِانسِجَامِaccordبَيْنَbetweenأَجْزَائِهِits partsوَقَعَit fallsمَوْقِعَهُin its placeعَلَىuponنَفْسِthe soul ofالْمُخَاطَبِthe listenerوَandتَحَقَّقَis achievedالْأَمْرُthe matterالْمَطْلُوبُdesiredالْمُنْتَظَرُawaitedفَsoإِنَّindeedهَذِهِthisاللَّذَّةَpleasureتَتَضَاعَفُ،doubles,
so if the second verse comes—for example—with that harmony and accord between its parts, it falls in its proper place upon the listener's soul and the desired awaited matter is achieved, then this pleasure doubles,
ثُمَّthenإِذَاifكَانَareالْبَيْتَانِthe two versesكِلَاهُمَاboth of themيَشْتَمِلَانِincludingعَلَىuponقَافِيَةٍrhymeوَاحِدَةٍsingleزَادَتِincreasedاللَّذَّةُthe pleasureثَلَاثَةَthreeأَضْعَافِهَا.times its fold.
then if both verses include a single rhyme, the pleasure increases threefold.
فَsoالتَّمَتُّعُenjoymentوَandالِالْتِذَاذُtaking pleasureبِinالْأَبْيَاتِthe versesالشِّعْرِيَّةِpoeticبِسَبَبِbecause ofهَذَاthisالسِّرِّsecretالدَّقِيقِsubtleفِطْرَةٌis a natureقَدِيمَةٌancientفُطِرَcreatedعَلَيْهَاupon itالْبَشَرُ،mankind,
So enjoyment and taking pleasure in poetic verses because of this subtle secret is an ancient nature upon which mankind was created,
وَandلَاnoاخْتِلَافَdifferenceفِيهَاin itبَيْنَbetweenالْأَمْزِجَةِthe temperamentsوَandالطَّبَائِعِnaturesالسَّلِيمَةِsoundلِofأَهْلِthe people ofالْمَنَاطِقِregionsالْمُعْتَدِلَةِtemperateوَandكُلُّهُمْall of themمُتَّفِقُونَagreeingعَلَىuponذَلِكَ.that.
and there is no difference in it between the temperaments and sound natures of the people of temperate regions, and all of them agree upon that.
