السِّرُّThe secretفِيinانْسِجَامِthe harmony ofالْآيَاتِthe versesالْقَصِيرَةِshortمَعَwithالطَّوِيلَةِ:the long ones:
The secret in the harmony of short verses with long ones:
وَيَنْبَغِيAnd it shouldأَنْthatيُعْلَمَit be known
And it should be known
أَنَّthatانْسِجَامَthe harmony ofالْكَلَامِspeech
that the harmony of speech
وَمُلَاءَمَتَهُand its suitabilityوَسُهُولَتَهُand its easeعَلَىuponلِسَانِthe tongue ofالْقَارِئِthe reader
and its suitability and ease on the reader's tongue
لِكَوْنِهِdue to its beingيَحُلُّtakingمَحَلَّthe place ofالْأَمْثَالِthe proverbsالسَّائِرَةِ،common,ting
due to its taking the place of common proverbs,
أَوْorلِتَكَرُّرِهِdue to its repetitionفِيinالْآيَةِthe verseالْكَرِيمَةِnoble
or due to its repetition in the noble verse
يُوَائِمُit harmonizesبَيْنَbetweenالْكَلَامِthe speechالطَّوِيلِlongوَالْكَلَامِand the speechالْقَصِيرِ،short,
it harmonizes between the long speech and the short speech,
وَيُحْدِثُand it producesبَيْنَهُمَاbetween themاتِّزَانًاa balanceوَانْسِجَامًا،and harmony,
and produces between them a balance and harmony,
فَيُؤْتَىso it is broughtتَارَةًsometimesبِالْفِقَرِwith the phrasesالْأُولَىfirstمِنَofالْكَلَامِthe speech
so sometimes the first phrases of the speech are brought
أَقْصَرَshorterوَأَخْصَرَand more conciseمِنَthanالْفِقْرَةِthe phraseالثَّانِيَةِ،second,
shorter and more concise than the second phrase,
وَهُوَand itيُفِيدُyieldsعُذُوبَةًsweetnessفِيinالْكَلَامِthe speechوَلَذَّةًand a pleasureجَدِيدَةًnew
and it yields sweetness in speech and a new pleasure
كَقَوْلِهِlike His saying- تَعَالَى -:- Exalted is He -:{خُذُوهُ{Seize himفَغُلُّوهُthen shackle him(٣٠)(30)ثُمَّThenالْجَحِيمَHellfireصَلُّوهُburn him(٣١)(31)ثُمَّThenفِيinسِلْسِلَةٍa chainذَرْعُهَاwhose lengthسَبْعُونَis seventyذِرَاعًاcubitsفَاسْلُكُوهُ}insert him}
like His saying - Exalted is He -: {Seize him and shackle him (30) Then burn him in Hellfire (31) Then in a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him}.
فَكَأَنَّSo it is as ifالْمُتَكَلِّمَthe speakerفِيinمِثْلِsuchهَذَاthisالْكَلَامِspeech
So it is as if the speaker in such speech
يُضْمِرُconceivesفِيinنَفْسِهِhis mind
conceives in his mind
أَنَّthatالْجُمْلَةَthe sentenceالْأُولَىfirstبِاجْتِمَاعِهَاby its joiningمَعَwithالْجُمْلَةِthe sentenceالثَّانِيَةِsecondفِيinكَفَّةٍ،one pan [of a scale],
that the first sentence together with the second sentence are in one pan,
وَالْجُمْلَةَand the sentenceالثَّالِثَةَthirdوَحْدَهَاaloneفِيinكَفَّةٍpanأُخْرَى.another.
and the third sentence alone is in another pan.
الْآيَاتُThe versesذَاتُpossessingالْقَوَائِمِlimbs / segmentsالثَّلَاثِ:three:
The verses with three segments:
كَذَلِكَLikewiseتَكُونُisالْآيَةُthe verseأَحْيَانًاsometimesذَاتَpossessingقَوَائِمَsegmentsثَلَاثٍ،three,
Likewise, the verse is sometimes of three segments,
مِثْلَlikeقَوْلِهِHis saying- تَعَالَى -:- Exalted is He -:{يَوْمَ{The Dayتَبْيَضُّ(when) will turn whiteوُجُوهٌfacesوَتَسْوَدُّand turn blackوُجُوهٌfacesفَأَمَّاAs forالَّذِينَthose whoاسْوَدَّتْturned blackوُجُوهُهُمْ}their faces}
like His saying - Exalted is He -: {The Day (when) faces will turn white and turn black, as for those whose faces turned black}.
إِلَخِEt ceteraالْآيَةِ،the verse,{وَأَمَّا{And as forالَّذِينَthose whoابْيَضَّتْturned whiteوُجُوهُهُمْ}their faces}
Et cetera the verse, {And as for those whose faces turned white}.
إِلَخِEt ceteraالْآيَةِthe verseوَعَامَّةُand the general mass ofالْقُرَّاءِreadersيَجْمَعُونَgroupالْأُولَىthe firstمَعَwithالثَّانِيَةِ،the second,
Et cetera the verse and the general mass of readers group the first with the second,
وَيَعُدُّونَهَاand they consider itآيَةًa verseطَوِيلَةً.long.
and consider it a long verse.
الْآيَةُThe verseذَاتُpossessingالْفَاصِلَتَيْنِ:two pauses:
The verse with two pauses:
وَأَحْيَانًاAnd sometimesتَرِدُoccursفِيinالْآيَةِthe verseالْوَاحِدَةِsingleفَاصِلَتَانِtwo pauses
And sometimes in a single verse there occur two pauses
مِثْلَlikeمَاwhatيَرِدُoccursذَلِكَthatفِيinالْبَيْتِthe poetic verseأَيْضًا.also.
just like that occurs in the poetic verse also.
