الرَّجْمُ
Stoningوَاسْتِبْدَالُهُ
and its replacementبِالْجَلْدِ
with floggingوَتَسْحِيمِ
and blackeningالْوَجْهِ
the faceStoning and its replacement with flogging and blackening the face
تَرَكُوا
They abandonedالْعَمَلَ
actingبِرَجْمِ
upon the stoning ofالزَّانِي
the adultererThey abandoned acting upon the stoning of the adulterer,
وَكَانَ
and the rabbis wereالْأَحْبَارُ
the rabbisخَشْيَةَ
out of fear ofالْفَضِيحَةِ
the scandalوَالْعَارِ
and shameand the rabbis - out of fear of scandal and shame -
يُخْفُونَ
concealingتِلْكَ
thoseالْآيَاتِ
versesالَّتِي
whichفِيهَا
containنَصُّ
the text ofهَذَا
thisالْحُكْمِ
rulingالصَّرِيحِ
explicitwere concealing those verses which contain the text of this explicit ruling.

2كَذَلِكَ
Likewiseتِلْكَ
thoseالْآيَاتُ
versesالَّتِي
whichذُكِرَتْ
were mentionedفِيهَا
in themبِشَارَةُ
the glad tidings ofهَاجَرَ
Hagarوَإِسْمَاعِيلَ
and Ishmaelعَلَيْهِمَا
upon them bothالسَّلَامُ
be peace2 - Likewise, those verses in which the glad tidings of Hagar and Ishmael - peace be upon them both -
بِأَنَّهُ
thatسَوْفَ
willيُولَدُ
be bornفِي
inأَعْقَابِهِمْ
their posterityمَنْ
someone whoيَبْعَثُهُ
will raise himاللَّهُ
Allahتَعَالَى
the Exaltedنَبِيّاً
as a prophetوَرَسُولاً
and a messengerwere mentioned, stating that there would be born among their posterity one whom Allah - the Exalted - would send as a prophet and messenger,
وَالْآيَاتُ
and the versesالَّتِي
thatتَحْمِلُ
carryإِشَارَاتٍ
indicationsوَاضِحَةً
clearإِلَى
toدِينٍ
a religionيَظْهَرُ
that will appearوَيَبْلُغُ
and reachكَمَالَهُ
its perfectionفِي
inأَرْضِ
the land ofالْحِجَازِ
the Hijazand the verses that bear clear indications of a religion that will appear and reach its perfection in the land of the Hijaz,
وَتَضِجُّ
and resoundبِهِ
with itجِبَالُ
the mountains ofعَرَفَاتٍ
Arafatبِالتَّلْبِيَةِ
with the Talbiyahwhile the mountains of Arafat resound with it through the Talbiyah,
وَيَؤُمُّ
and head towardsالنَّاسُ
peopleلِزِيَارَتِهَا
to visit itمِنَ
fromالْأَقْطَارِ
regionsوَالْأَمْصَارِ
and distant citiesand people head towards to visit it from all regions and distant cities.
وَبِالرَّغْمِ
Despiteمِنْ
ofأَنَّ
the fact thatهَذِهِ
theseالْآيَاتِ
versesلَا
do notتَزَالُ
cease toتُوجَدُ
existفِي
inالتَّوْرَاةِ
the Torahحَتَّى
untilالْيَوْمِ
todayDespite the fact that these verses still exist in the Torah until today,
كَانَ
wereالْيَهُودُ
the Jewsيَتَأَوَّلُونَهَا
interpreting themبِأَنَّ
such thatهَذِهِ
theseالْآيَاتِ
versesإِنَّمَا
merelyتُخْبِرُ
foretellبِظُهُورِ
the appearance ofذَلِكَ
thatالدِّينِ
religionthe Jews used to interpret them by saying that these verses merely foretell the appearance of that religion,
وَلَكِنَّهَا
but theyلَا
do notتَأْمُرُ
commandبِاتِّبَاعِهِ
following itوَالْخُضُوعِ
and submittingلَهُ
to itbut they do not command following it and submitting to it.
وَكَانَتْ
And wasهَذِهِ
thisالْكَلِمَةُ
statementعَلَى
onطَرَفِ
the tip ofلِسَانِهِمْ
their tonguesمَلْحَمَةٌ
a calamityكُتِبَتْ
has been writtenعَلَيْنَا
upon usAnd this statement was on the tip of their tongue: "A calamity has been written upon us."
وَلَكِنَّ
Howeverلَمَّا
whenكَانَ
wereعَامَّةُ
the general mass ofالْيَهُودِ
Jewsأَنْفُسُهُمْ
themselvesلَا
notتَقْبَلُ
acceptنُفُوسُهُمْ
their soulsهَذِهِ
theseالتَّأْوِيلَاتِ
interpretationsالرَّكِيكَةَ
flimsyالْبَاطِلَةَ
and falseHowever, since the general mass of the Jews themselves could not accept in their souls these flimsy and false interpretations,
وَلَا
and norيَعْتَرِفُونَ
did they acknowledgeبِصِحَّتِهَا
their correctnessوَسَلَامَتِهَا
and soundnessnor did they acknowledge their correctness and soundness,
كَانُوا
they usedيَتَوَاصَوْنَ
to adviseفِيمَا
amongبَيْنَهُمْ
themselvesأَنْ
thatلَا
notيُفْشُوا
they divulgeهَذَا
thisالسِّرَّ
secretthey used to advise one another not to divulge this secret,
وَلَا
and notيَتَعَالَنُوهُ
to make it publicفِيمَا
amongبَيْنَهُمْ
themselvesand not to make it public among themselves.
أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُمْDo you speak to them
بِمَاabout what
فَتَحَhas opened
اللَّهُAllah
عَلَيْكُمْto you
لِيُحَاجُّوكُمْso that they may argue against you
بِهِwith it
عِنْدَbefore
رَبِّكُمْyour Lord
Do you speak to them about what Allah has revealed to you, so that they may argue against you with it before your Lord?
