الصَّفَحَاتُThe pagesالْإِلَهِيَّةُdivineفِيinالْقُرْآنِ:the Quran:

The Divine Pages in the Quran:

ثُمَّThenلَمَّاwhenكَانَit wasإِثْبَاتُaffirmingالصِّفَاتِthe attributesالْإِلَهِيَّةِdivine

Then when affirming the divine attributes

بِذِكْرِby mentioningكُنْهِهَاtheir essenceوَحَقَائِقِهَاand their realitiesوَدَقِيقِand subtleمَسَائِلِهَاissuesمُسْتَحِيلاًimpossibleفِيregardingحَقِّهِمْ،them,

by mentioning their essence, realities, and subtle issues was impossible regarding them,

وَكَانَand and it wasتَرْكُهُمْleaving themمِنْfromدُونِwithoutإِطْلَاعٍacquaintanceعَلَىwithهَذِهِtheseالصِّفَاتِattributesالْإِلَهِيَّةِdivine

and leaving them without acquaintance with these divine attributes

يَحْرِمُهُمْdeprives themمِنْofمَعْرِفَةِknowingالرُّبوبِيَّةِLordship

deprives them of knowing Lordship

- الَّتِي- whichهِيَisأَنْفَعُthe most beneficialوَسِيلَةٍmeansفِيinتَهْذِيبِrefiningالنُّفُوسِsoulsالْبَشَرِيَّةِ -human -

- which is the most beneficial means in refining human souls -

كَانَit wasحِكْمَةُthe wisdomاللَّهِof Allah- تَعَالَى -- Exalted is He -وَهُوَwhile He isأَحْكَمُthe most judiciousالْحَاكِمِينَ -of judges -

it was the wisdom of Allah - Exalted is He -, and He is the most judicious of judges,

أَنْthatيَخْتَارَHe choseمِنَfromالصِّفَاتِattributesالْبَشَرِيَّةِhumanالَّتِيwhichنَعَهْدُهَاwe knowوَنُشَاهِدُهَاand witness

to choose from the human attributes that we know and witness

وَالَّتِيand whichنَتَمَادَحُwe praise one anotherبِهَاby themوَنَفْتَخِرُand take prideبِالتَّحَلِّيin adorning ourselvesبِهَا،with them,

and by which we praise one another and take pride in adorning ourselves,

صِفَاتٍattributesكَرِيمَةًnobleعَدِيدَةًnumerousتُسْتَعْمَلُusedلِأَدَاءِto conveyمَعَانٍmeaningsغَامِضَةٍobscureدَقِيقَةٍsubtle

numerous noble attributes used to convey obscure, subtle meanings

لَاthat do notتَبْلُغُreachجَلَالَهَاtheir majestyوَعَظَمَتَهَاand greatnessعُقُولُmindsالْبَشَرِ،of humans,

whose majesty and greatness human minds cannot reach,

ثُمَّthenيَجْعَلُHe makesقَوْلَهُHis statementالْفَصْلَ:decisive:

then He makes His decisive statement:

{لَيْسَ{There isكَمِثْلِهِlike unto Himشَيْءٌ}anything}

{There is nothing like unto Him}

تِرْيَاقاًas an antidoteلِدَاءِfor the diseaseالْجَهْلِof ignoranceالْعُضَالِ،incurable,

as an antidote for the incurable disease of ignorance,

وَعِلَاجاًand a remedyلِقِلَّةِfor lackالْبَصَرِof insightوَالْإِدْرَاكِ،and perception,

and a remedy for the lack of insight and perception,

وَنَهَىand He forbadeعَنْfromاسْتِعْمَالِusingتِلْكَthoseالصِّفَاتِattributesالْبَشَرِيَّةِhuman

and He forbade the use of those human attributes

الَّتِيwhichيُخْشَىare fearedمِنْهَاfromجُمُوحُthe runawayالْأَوْهَامِof illusionsوَالظَُّنُونِand suspicions

from which one fears the runaway of illusions and suspicions

نَحْوَtowardالْعَقَائِدِbeliefsالْبَاطِلَةِfalseكَإِثْبَاتِlike affirmingالْوَلَدِ،a child,

toward false beliefs such as affirming a child,

وَالْبُكَاءِ،weeping,وَالْجَزَعِand panicوَمَاand whatإِلَىtoذَلِكَ.that.

weeping, panic, and so on.

خَطَرُThe dangerالْخَوْضِof delvingفِيintoالصِّفَاتِthe attributesبِدُونِwithoutتَوْقِيفٍ:textual instruction:

The Danger of Delving into Attributes Without Textual Instruction:

وَإِذَاAnd ifأَنْعَمْتَyou bestowالنَّظَرَreflectionوَتَأَمَّلْتَand contemplateمَسْأَلَةَthe issueالصِّفَاتِof attributesالْإِلَهِيَّةِdivineبِدِقَّةٍwith precision

And if you reflect and contemplate the issue of divine attributes precisely
