وَAndالْأَعْمَالِthe deedsلَاnotالتَّعْرِيضُpointing outبِwithشَخْصٍa personمُعَيَّنٍspecificمِنْfromالْأَشْخَاصِthe personsقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىExalted is He
And the focus is on deeds, not on exposing a specific individual among persons. He - the Exalted - said:
وَAndوَصَّيْنَاWe enjoinedالْإِنْسَانَmanبِtoوَالِدَيْهِhis parentsإِحْسَانًاgood treatment
And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment.
حَمَلَتْboreهُhimأُمُّmotherهُhisكُرْهًاwith hardshipوَandوَضَعَتْboreهُhimكُرْهًاwith hardshipإِلَخْetc.
His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, etc.
ثُمَّThenذَكَرَHe mentionedبَعْدَafterذَلِكَthatصُورَتَيْنِtwo imagesلِforفَرِيقَيْنِtwo groupsصُورَةَimage ofسَعِيدٍa blessed personوَandصُورَةَimage ofشَقِيٍّa wretched person
Then He mentioned after that two images for two groups: the image of a blessed one and the image of a wretched one.
كَذَلِكَLikewiseقَوْلُstatement ofتَعَالَىExalted is He
Likewise is His statement - the Exalted -
وَAndإِذَاwhenقِيلَit is saidلَهُمْto themمَاذَاwhatأَنْزَلَsent downرَبُّكُمْyour Lordقَالُواthey saidأَسَاطِيرُlegends ofالْأَوَّلِينَthe ancients
And when it is said to them, "What has your Lord sent down?" They say, "Legends of the ancients."
وَAndقَوْلُstatement ofهُHisتَعَالَىExalted is He
And His statement - the Exalted -
وَAndقِيلَit is saidلِلَّذِينَto those whoاتَّقَوْاfeared Allahمَاذَاwhatأَنْزَلَsent downرَبُّكُمْyour Lordقَالُواthey saidخَيْرًاgood
And it is said to those who feared Allah, "What has your Lord sent down?" They say, "Good."
وَAndهَكَذَاthusيَنْبَغِيit is fittingأَنْthatتُحْمَلَbe interpretedالْآيَاتُthe versesالتَّالِيَةُfollowingعَلَىuponهَذَاthisالْمَعْنَىmeaning
And thus it is fitting that the following verses be interpreted upon this meaning:
ضَرَبَset forthاللَّهُAllahمَثَلًاan exampleقَرْيَةًa townshipكَانَتْthat wasآمِنَةًsecureمُطْمَئِنَّةًand peacefulالْآيَةَthe verse
"Allah sets forth an example: a township that was secure and peaceful" the verse.
هُوَHeالَّذِيis the One whoخَلَقَكُمْcreated youمِنْfromنَفْسٍa soulوَاحِدَةٍsingleوَandجَعَلَmadeمِنْهَاfrom itزَوْجَهَاits mateلِيَسْكُنَthat he might dwellإِلَيْهَاin security with herفَلَمَّاand whenتَغَشَّاهَاhe covered herالْآيَةَthe verse
"It is He who created you from a single soul and made from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her. And when he covered her" the verse,
قَدْCertainlyأَفْلَحَhave succeededالْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believers١1الَّذِينَWhoهُمْtheyفِيinصَلَاتِهِمْtheir prayerخَاشِعُونَare humbly submissive
"Certainly have the believers succeeded. (1) They who are during their prayer humbly submissive,"
وَAndلَاdo notتُطِعْobeyكُلَّeveryحَلَّافٍhabitual swearerمَهِينٍdespicableالْآيَاتُthe verses
"And do not obey every habitual swearer, despicable," the verses.
وَAndلَاit does notيَلْزَمُrequireفِيinهَذِهِthisالصُّورَةِimageأَنْthatتَتَوَفَّرَbe availableجَمِيعُallالْخُصُوصِيَّاتِparticularsذَاتِهَاthemselvesفِيinشَخْصٍa personخَاصٍّspecific
And it is not required in this image that all the exact particulars be found in a specific person,
كَمَاjust asأَنَّthatفِيinقَوْلِstatement ofتَعَالَىExalted is He
just as in His statement - the Exalted -:
كَمَثَلِlikeحَبَّةٍa seedأَنْبَتَتْwhich grewسَبْعَsevenسَنَابِلَspikesفِيinكُلِّeveryسُنْبُلَةٍspikeمِائَةُa hundredحَبَّةٍgrainsالْآيَةَthe verse
"The likeness of a seed which grew seven spikes; in every spike is a hundred grains" the verse,
لَاit does notيَلْزَمُrequireأَنْthatتُوجَدَbe foundحَبَّةٌa seedبِwithهَذِهِthisالصِّفَةِdescriptionبِعَيْنِهَاprecisely
it is not required that a seed with this exact description be found.
إِنَّمَاRatherالْغَرَضُthe purposeهُنَاhereهُوَisتَصْوِيرُportrayal ofزِيَادَةِthe increase ofالْأَجْرِthe rewardوَandالثَّوَابِrequitalلَيْسَnotغَيْرَother (than that)
Rather, the purpose here is portraying the increase of reward and requital, nothing else.
فَSoإِذَاifوُجِدَتْis foundصُورَةٌan image
So if an image is found,
