قِيلَ:It

It was said:

وَدَخَلَAnd enteredالْفَرَزْدَقُal-FarazdaqعَلَىuponسُكَيْنَةَSukaynahبِنْتِdaughter ofالْحُسَيْنِ،al-Husayn,

And al-Farazdaq entered upon Sukaynah the daughter of al-Husayn,

فَقَالَتْand she saidلَهُ:to him:مَنْWhoأَشْعَرُis the most poeticalالنَّاسِ؟of the people?

and she said to him: "Who is the most poetical of the people?"

قَالَ:He said:أَنَا،"I am,"

He said: "I am."

قَالَتْ:she said:كَذَبْتَ،"You have lied,أَشْعَرُmore poeticalمِنْكَthan you isالَّذِيthe one whoيَقُولُ:says:"

She said: "You have lied, more poetical than you is the one who says:"

بِنَفْسِيBy my soulمَنْis the one whoseتَجَنُّبُهُavoidance isعَزِيزٌprecious......عَلَيَّto me,وَمَنْand whoseزِيَارَتُهُvisit isلِمَامُoccasional,

By my soul is the one whose avoidance is precious to me, and whose visit is occasional,

وَمَنْAnd whoأَمْسَىeveningedوَأَصْبَحَand morningedلَاnotأَرَاهُseeing him,وَيَطْرُقُنِيand he visits me by nightإِذَاwhenهَجَعَslumberالنِّيَامُthe sleepers

And who eveninged and morninged without my seeing him, and he visits me by night when the sleepers slumber

فَقَالَ:He said:أَمَا"As forوَاللهِGod,لَئِنْifتَرَكْتِنِيyou leave me,لَأُسْمِعَنَّكَI shall surely make you hearمَاwhatهُوَisأَحْسَنُbetterمِنْهُ،than it,"

He said: "As for God, if you leave me, I shall surely make you hear what is better than it,"

فَقَالَتْ:so she said:اخْرِجُوهُ"Take him outعَنِّي،from me,"

so she said: "Take him out from me,"

ثُمَّthenعَادَhe returnedمِنَfromالْغَدِthe morrowفَقَالَتْ:and she said:مَنْ"Whoأَشْعَرُis the most poeticalالنَّاسِ؟of the people?"

then he returned on the morrow and she said: "Who is the most poetical of the people?"

قَالَ:He said:أَنَا،"I,"

He said: "I,"

قَالَتْ:she said:كَذَبْتَ،"You have lied,أَشْعَرُmore poeticalمِنْكَthan you isالَّذِيthe one whoيَقُولُ:says:"

she said: "You have lied, more poetical than you is the one who says:"

يَاO houseبَيْتَofعَاتِكَةَAtikahالَّذِيwhichأَتَعَزَّلُI isolate myself from......حَذَرَcautious ofالْعِدَىenemiesوَبِهِand with itالْفُؤَادُthe heart isمُوَكَّلُentrusted

O house of Atikah which I isolate myself from, cautious of enemies, and with it the heart is entrusted

إِنِّيIndeed Iلَأَمْنَحُكَsurely grant youالصُّدُودَaversionوَإِنَّنِيand indeed I......قَسْماًby oathإِلَيْكَtowards youمَعَalong withالصُّدُودِaversionلَأَمَيَلُam surely inclined

Indeed I surely grant you aversion and indeed I, by oath towards you along with aversion, am surely inclined

فَقَالَ:He said:أَمَا"As forوَاللهِGod,لَئِنْifتَرَكْتِنِيyou leave me,لَأُسْمِعَنَّكَI shall surely make you hearأَحْسَنَbetterمِنْهُ،than it,"

He said: "As for God, if you leave me, I shall surely make you hear better than it,"

فَقَالَتْ:so she said:اخْرِجُوهُ"Take him outعَنِّي،from me,"

so she said: "Take him out from me,"

ثُمَّthenعَادَhe returnedمِنَfromالْغَدِthe morrowوَعِنْدَهَاand by her wereجَوَارٍslave-girlsكَالتَّمَاثِيلِ،like statues,

then he returned on the morrow and by her were slave-girls like statues,

فَأَخَذَتْso tookجَارِيَةٌa slave-girlمِنْهُنَّfrom among themبِقَلْبِهِ،by his heart,

so a slave-girl from among them captivated his heart,

فَقَالَتْand saidسُكَيْنَةُ:Sukaynah:مَنْ"Whoأَشْعَرُis the most poeticalالنَّاسِ؟of the people?"

and Sukaynah said: "Who is the most poetical of the people?"

قَالَ:He said:أَنَا،"I,"

He said: "I,"

قَالَتْ:she said:كَذَبْتَ،"You have lied,أَشْعَرُmore poeticalمِنْكَthan you isالَّذِيthe one whoيَقُولُ:says:"

she said: "You have lied, more poetical than you is the one who says:"

إِنَّIndeedالْعُيُونَthe eyesالَّتِيwhichفِيinطَرْفِهَاtheir glanceحُورٌare intense black and white......قَتَلْنَنَاthey killed usثُمَّthenلَاnotيُحْيِينَdo they reviveقَتْلَانَاour slain

Indeed the eyes which in their glance are intense black and white, they killed us then do not revive our slain

فَقَالَ:He said:يَا"O daughterبِنْتَofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللهِGod,إِنَّindeedلِيfor me isحَقّاًa rightبِإِقْبَالِيby my comingعَلَيْكِto youمِنْfromمَكَّةَMecca,

He said: "O daughter of the Messenger of God, indeed for me is a right by my coming to you from Mecca,

وَلَاand notأَزَالَceasingتَدْعِينَنِيyou call meأُسْمِعُكِto let you hearشِعْرِيmy poetryوَلَاand you do notتَزِيدِينَنِيincrease meعَلَىoverالتَّكْذِيبِthe calling of me a liarمَعَalong withأَنِّيthat Iلَأَخَافُsurely fearلِمَاfor whatبِيis in meأَنِّيthat Iلَاnotأَبْرَحُwill cease to beمَيِّتاًdeadوَلِيand for me isحَاجَةٌ،a need,"

and you continually call me to let you hear my poetry and you do not increase me over calling me a liar, along with the fact that for what is in me I fear I shall not cease to be dead, and I have a need,"

قَالَتْ:she said:فَمَا"So whatهِيَ؟is it?"

she said: "So what is it?"

قَالَ:He said:إِنْ"IfأَنَاIمِتُّdie,تَأْمُرِينَyou orderبِتَكْفِينِيfor my being shroudedفِيinثِيَابِgarments ofهَذِهِ،this one,"

He said: "If I die, you order that I be shrouded in the garments of this one,"

وَأَشَارَand he pointedإِلَىtoالْجَارِيَةِ،the slave-girl.

and he pointed to the slave-girl.

فَقَالَتْ:She said:هِيَ"Sheلَكَ،is yours,"

She said: "She is yours,"

وَضَمَّتْand she addedإِلَيْهَاto herجَائِزَةًa prizeوَكِسْوَةً.and clothing.

and she added to her a prize and clothing.

وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofأَبِيAbuالزِّنَادِal-Zinadقَالَ:he said:اجْتَمَعَgatheredجَرِيرٌJarirوَالْفَرَزْدَقُand al-Farazdaqوَكَثَيِّرٌand Kuthayyirوَنُصَيْبٌand Nusaybفِيinمَنْزِلِthe house ofسُكَيْنَةَSukaynahبِنْتِdaughter ofالْحُسَيْنِ،al-Husayn,

And on the authority of Abu al-Zinad he said: Jarir, al-Farazdaq, Kuthayyir, and Nusayb gathered in the house of Sukaynah the daughter of al-Husayn,

فَخَرَجَتْso came outجَارِيَةٌa slave-girlوَمَعَهَاand with her wasقِرْطَاسٌa paperوَقَالَتْ:and she said:أَيُّكُمُ"Which of you isالْفَرَزْدَقُ؟al-Farazdaq?"

so a slave-girl came out with a paper and she said: "Which of you is al-Farazdaq?"

فَقَالَ:He said:هَا"Hereأَنَاamذَا،I,"

He said: "Here am I,"

قَالَتْ:she said:أَنْتَ"You areالَّذِيthe one whoيَقُولُ:says:"

she said: "You are the one who says:"

أَبِيتُI spend the nightأُمَنِّيmaking my soul hopeالنَّفْسَthatأَنْthatسَوْفَpresentlyنَلْتَقِيwe shall meet......وَهَلْand isهُوَitمَقْدُورٌdestinedلِنَفْسِيfor my soulلِقَاؤُهَاits meeting?

I spend the night making my soul hope that presently we shall meet, and is it destined for my soul its meeting?

فَإِنْSo ifأَلْقَهَاI meet herأَوْorيَجْمَعِgathersالدَّهْرُTimeبَيْنَنَاbetween us......فَفِيهَاthen in it isشِفَاءُthe cure ofالنَّفْسِthe soulمِنْهَاfrom itوَدَاؤُهَاand its disease

So if I meet her or Time gathers between us, then in it is the cure of the soul from it and its disease

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،"Yes,"

He said: "Yes,"

قَالَتْ:she said:قَوْلُكَ"Your poetryأَحْسَنُis better thanمِنْظَرِكَ!وَمَنْyour appearance! And you areالْقَائِلُ:the one who says:"

she said: "Your poetry is better than your appearance! And you are the one who says:"

وَدَّعَنْنِيThey bade me farewellبِإِشَارَةٍwith a gestureوَتَحِيَّةٍand a greeting......وَتَرَكْنَنِيand they left meبَيْنَbetweenالدِّيَارِthe dwellingsقَتِيلَاslain

They bade me farewell with a gesture and a greeting, and they left me between the dwellings slain

لَمْI was not ableأَسْتَطِعْtoرَدَّreturnالْجَوَابِthe answerعَلَيْهِمْto them......عِنْدَatالْوَدَاعِthe farewellوَمَاand notشَفَيْنَdid they cureعَلِيلَاa sick person

I was not able to return the answer to them at the farewell and not did they cure a sick person

لَوْIfكُنْتُI wereأَمْلِكُهُمْmastering themإِذاًthenلَمْwould notيَبْرَحُواhave they departed......حَتَّىuntilأُوَدِّعَI bid farewellقَلْبِيto my heartالْمَخْبُولَاthe deranged

If I were mastering them then would not have they departed until I bid farewell to my heart the deranged

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،"Yes,"

He said: "Yes,"

قَالَتْ:she said:أَحْسَنْتَ"Well done,أَحْسَنَmay God doاللهُwellإِلَيْكَ!وَمَنto you! And you areالْقَائِلُ:the one who says:"

she said: "Well done, may God do well to you! And you are the one who says:"

هُمَاThe two of themدَلَّتَانِيlowered meمِنْfromثَمَانِينَeightyقَامَةًcubits height......كَمَاjust asانْقَضَّswoops downبَازٍa falconأَقْتَمُdusty-coloredالرِّيشِin feathersكَاسِرُpreying

The two of them lowered me from eighty cubits height, just as swoops down a falcon dusty-colored in feathers preying

فَلَمَّاSo whenاسْتَوَتْbecame firmرِجْلَايَmy two feetفِيonالْأَرْضِthe earthنَادَتَا:they called out:......أَحَيٌّ"Is there a living oneفَيُرْجَىso he is hoped forأَمْorقَتِيلٌa slain oneنُحَاذِرُهُwe beware of?"

So when my two feet became firm on the earth they called out: "Is there a living one so he is hoped for or a slain one we beware of?"

فَقُلْتُ:So I said:ارْفَعُوا"Raiseالْأَسْبَابَthe ropesلَاlestيَشْعُرُواthey perceiveبِنَاus......وَوَلَّيْتُand I turned awayفِيinأَعْجَازِthe trailing parts ofلَيْلٍa nightأُبَادِرُهُhurrying through it

So I said: "Raise the ropes lest they perceive us, and I turned away in the trailing parts of a night hurrying through it

أُحَاذِرُbewaring ofبَوَّابِينَdoorkeepersقَدْwhoوُكِّلُواhave been appointedبِهَاover it......وَأَحْمَرَand a red thingمِنْofسَاجٍteakwoodتُبَصُّare shiningمَسَامِرُهُits nails

bewaring of doorkeepers who have been appointed over it, and a red thing of teakwood, shining are its nails

فَأَصْبَحْتُSo I becameفِيamongالْقَوْمِthe peopleالْقُعُودِsittingوَأَصْبَحَتْand became......مُغْلَقَةًlockedدُونِيbehind meعَلَيْهَاupon itدَسَاكِرُهُits fortified gates

So I became among the people sitting and locked behind me upon it were its fortified gates

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،"Yes,"

He said: "Yes,"

قَالَتْ:she said:سُوءَةً"Shameلَكَ!upon you!قَضَيْتَYou fulfilledحَاجَتَكَyour needفَأَفْشَيْتَthen you made publicعَلَيْهَاconcerning herوَعَلَىand concerningنَفْسِكَ،yourself,"

she said: "Shame upon you! You fulfilled your need then you made public concerning her and concerning yourself,"

فَضَرَبَso struckبِيَدِهِwith his handعَلَىuponجَبْهَتِهِhis foreheadوَقَالَ:and said:نَعَمْ"Yes,فَسُوءَةًthen shameلِي!upon me!"

so he struck with his hand upon his forehead and said: "Yes, then shame upon me!"

ثُمَّThenدَخَلَتْshe enteredوَخَرَجَتْand came outوَقَالَتْ:and said:أَيُّكُمْ"Which of you isجَرِيرٌ؟Jarir?"

Then she entered and came out and said: "Which of you is Jarir?"

فَقَالَ:He said:هَا"Hereأَنَاamذَا،I,"

He said: "Here am I,"

قَالَتْ:she said:أَنْتَ"You areالْقَائِلُ:the one who says:"

she said: "You are the one who says:"

رُزِقْنَاWe were providedبِهِthrough him withالصَّيْدَgameالْغَزِيرَabundantوَلَمْand we were notنَكُنْ.........كَمَنْlike one whoseنُبْلُهُarrows areمَحْرُومَةٌdeprivedوَحَبَائِلُهُand his snares

We were provided through him with game abundant, and we were not like one whose arrows are deprived and his snares

فَهَيْهَاتَFar, far away isهَيْهَاتَ...الْعَقِيقُal-Aqiqوَمَنْand whoever isبِهِin it......وَهَيْهَاتَand far away isحَيٌّa tribeبِالْعَقِيقِat al-Aqiqنُوَاصِلُهُwe visit

Far, far away is al-Aqiq and whoever is in it, and far away is a tribe at al-Aqiq we visit

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،"Yes,"

He said: "Yes,"

قَالَتْ:she said:أَحْسَنَ"May God doاللهُwellإِلَيْكَ!وَمَنto you! And you areالْقَائِلُ:the one who says:"

she said: "May God do well to you! And you are the one who says:"

كَأَنَّAs ifعُيُونَthe eyes ofالْمُجْتَلِينَthose gazingتَعَرَّضَتْwere exposed......وَشَمْساًand to a sunتَجَلَّىcleared upيَوْمَon the day ofدَجْنٍcloudinessسَحَابُهَاits cloud

As if the eyes of those gazing were exposed, and to a sun cleared up on the day of cloudiness its cloud

إِذَاWhenذُكِرَتْit is mentionedلِلْقَلْبِto the heartكَادَit almostلِذِكْرِهَاat its mention......يَطِيرُto flyإِلَيْهَاto herوَاعْتَرَاهُand afflicted itعَذَابُهَاits torment

When it is mentioned to the heart it almost at its mention to fly to her and afflicted it its torment

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،"Yes,"

He said: "Yes,"

قَالَتْ:she said:أَحْسَنْتَ!وَمَن"Well done! And you areالْقَائِلُ:the one who says:"

she said: "Well done! And you are the one who says:"

سَرَتِTravelled by nightالْهُمُومُthe worriesفَبِتْنَso they spent the nightغَيْرَnotنِيَامٍsleeping......وَأَخُوand the companion ofالْهُمُومِworriesيَرُومُseeksكُلَّeveryمَرَامِaim

Travelled by night the worries so they spent the night not sleeping, and the companion of worries seeks every aim

طَرَقَتْكَVisited you by nightصَائِدَةُthe hunter ofالْقُلُوبِheartsوَلَيْسَand it is notذَاthis......وَقْتَthe time ofالزِّيَارَةِvisitingفَارْجِعِيso returnبِسَلَامٍin peace

Visited you by night the hunter of hearts and it is not this the time of visiting so return in peace

لَوْIfكَانَwereعَهْدُكَyour covenantكَالَّذِيlike that whichحَدَّثْتَنِيyou told me......لَوْصَلْتُI would have united withذَاكَthatفَكَانَand it would have beenغَيْرَother thanذِمَامِblame

If were your covenant like that which you told me, I would have united with that and it would have been other than blame

تُجْرِيYou runالسِّوَاكَthe toothbrushعَلَىoverأَغَرَّa white-gleamingكَأَنَّهُas if it......بَرْدٌhailتَحَدَّرَdescendedمِنْfromمُتُونِthe heights ofغَمَامِa cloud

You run the toothbrush over a white-gleaming as if it hail descended from the heights of a cloud

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،"Yes,"

He said: "Yes,"

قَالَتْ:she said:سُوءَةً"Shameلَكَ!upon you!جَعَلْتَهَاYou made herصَائِدَةَthe hunter ofالْقُلُوبِheartsحَتَّىuntilإِذَاwhenأَنَاخَتْshe kneltبِبَابِكَat your doorجَعَلْتَyou madeدُونَهَاbefore herحِجَاباً،a barrier,"

she said: "Shame upon you! You made her the hunter of hearts until when she knelt at your door you made before her a barrier,"

أَلَاwhyقُلْتَ:did you not say:

why did you not say:

طَرَقَتْكَVisited you by nightصَائِدَةُthe hunter ofالْقُلُوبِheartsفَمَرْحَباًso welcome......نَفْسِيmy soulفِدَاؤُكِbe your ransomفَادْخُلِيso enterبِسَلَامٍin peace

Visited you by night the hunter of hearts so welcome my soul be your ransom so enter in peace

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ"Yesفَسُوءَةًthen shameلِي!upon me!"

He said: "Yes then shame upon me!"

وَدَخَلَتْAnd she enteredوَخَرَجَتْand came outوَقَالَتْ:and said:أَيُّكُمْ"Which of you isكَثَيِّرٌ؟Kuthayyir?"

And she entered and came out and said: "Which of you is Kuthayyir?"

فَقَالَ:He said:هَا"Hereأَنَاamذَا،I,"

He said: "Here am I,"

فَقَالَتْ:so she said:أَنْتَ"You areالْقَائِلُ:the one who says:"

so she said: "You are the one who says:"

وَأَعْجَبَنِيAnd has pleased meيَاOعِزُّAzzمِنْamongخَلَائِقٍtraits......حِسَانٍbeautifulإِذَاwhenعُدَّare countedالْخَلَائِقُthe traitsأَرْبَعُfour

And has pleased me, O Azz, among traits beautiful when are counted the traits, four

دُنُوُّكِYour drawing nearحَتَّىuntilيَطْمَعَhopesالصَّبُّthe passionate loverفِيinالصِّبَاyouthful love......وَقَطْعُكِand your cutting offأَسْبَابَthe causes ofالصِّبَاyouthful loveحِينَwhenتَقْطَعُyou cut it off

Your drawing near until hopes the passionate lover in youthful love, and your cutting off the causes of youthful love when you cut it off
