حَشَّدَىHeمِنَfromالْحَشَادِ،Al-Hashad,يُرِيدُhe meansأَنَّهُthat heيَخْلِطُهَاmixes itبِهِ.with it.

He means from Al-Hashad, meaning that he mixes it with it.

قَالَSaidإِدْرِيسُ:Idris:فَأُعْطِيَso was givenمَرْوَانُMarwanالْمَهْدِيُّAl-Mahdiثَلَاثِينَthirtyأَلْفَthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsفَانْصَرَفَso he departedإِلَىtoالْيَمَامَةِAl-Yamamahثُمَّthenعَادَhe returnedفِيinسَنَةِthe yearأَرْبَعٍfourوَسِتِّينَand sixtyوَمِائَةٍand one hundredفَطَلَبَand he soughtالْوُصُولَaccessبِيَعْقُوبَthrough Ya'qubبْنِson ofدَاوُدَ،Dawud,فَأَقَامَso he stayedنَحْواًaboutمِنْfromسَنَةٍ،a year,وَغَضِبَand became angryالْمَهْدِيُّAl-MahdiعَلَىatيَعْقُوبَYa'qubبْنِson ofدَاوُدَ.Dawud.

Idris said: Al-Mahdi gave Marwan thirty thousand dirhams, so he departed to Al-Yamamah, then returned in the year one hundred and sixty-four and sought access through Ya'qub ibn Dawud, staying for about a year, while Al-Mahdi grew angry with Ya'qub ibn Dawud.

قَالَSaidإِدْرِيسُ:Idris:فَحَدَّثَنِيso narrated to meمَرْوَانُMarwanقَالَ:saying:بَيْنَاWhileأَنَاIوَاقِفٌwas standingعَلَىatبَابِthe door ofالْمَهْدِيِّAl-Mahdiإِذْwhenخَرَجَcame outخَالِدُKhalidبْنُson ofيَزِيدَYazidبْنِson ofمَنْصُورٍMansurفَقَالَ:and said:يَاOابْنَson ofأَبِيAbiحَفْصَةَHafsahذَكَرَكَmentioned youأَمِيرُCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulآنِفاًjust nowوَهُوَwhile heيَرَاكَsees you asأَشْعَرَthe most poetالنَّاسِof peopleغَيْرَexceptأَنَّهُthat heيَقُولُsaysلَاnoحَاجَةَneedلَنَاfor usفِيمَاin whatقَبْلَكَis with youفَانْصَرِفْso turn awayعَنْfromبَابِنَا.our door.

Idris said: Marwan narrated to me, saying: While I was standing at the door of Al-Mahdi, Khalid ibn Yazid ibn Mansur came out and said, "O son of Abi Hafsah, the Commander of the Faithful mentioned you just now, considering you the most poetical of people, except that he says: We have no need of what is with you, so turn away from our door."

قَالَ:He said:فَانْصَرَفْتُso I departedمَغْمُوماًgrievedثُمَّthenتَذَكَّرْتُI rememberedرَجُلاًa manأَتَحَدَّثُI converseعِنْدَهُwith himوَأَتَفَرَّجُand am entertainedبِهِby himوَآنَسُand find comfortلَدَيْهِ،in his presence,فَأَتَيْتُso I came toيَزِيدَYazidبْنَson ofمَزِيدٍMazidفَشَكَوْتُand complainedإِلَيْهِto himمَاabout whatقَالَsaidلِيto meخَالِدُKhalidبْنُson ofيَزِيدَ،Yazid,فَقَالَ:so he said:أَدُلُّكَShall I guide youعَلَىtoرَجُلٍa manصَدُوقٍtruthfulلَهُwho hasرِقَّةٌsoftness/compassionلَعَلَّهُperhaps heيَنْفَعُكَ.will benefit you.

He said: I departed grieved, then I remembered a man with whom I converse, find entertainment, and comfort, so I went to Yazid ibn Mazid and complained to him about what Khalid ibn Yazid had said to me. He said, "Shall I guide you to a truthful man who has compassion, perhaps he will benefit you?"

قُلْتُ:I said:وَمَنْAnd whoهُوَ؟is he?قَالَ:He said:الْحَسَنُAl-Hasanالْحَاجِبُ.the chamberlain.

I said, "And who is he?" He said, "Al-Hasan the chamberlain."

فَغَدَوْتُSo I went earlyإِلَىtoالْحَسَنِAl-Hasanفَشَكَوْتُand complainedإِلَيْهِto himمَاabout whatحَكَاهُrelatedخَالِدٌKhalidمِنْofرَأْيِthe opinion ofأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَ.of the Faithful.

So I went early to Al-Hasan and complained to him about what Khalid had related regarding the opinion of the Commander of the Faithful.

فَقَالَ:He said:قُلْSpeakفِيaboutيَعْقُوبَYa'qubبْنِson ofدَاوُدَ.Dawud.

He said, "Speak in praise of Ya'qub ibn Dawud."

فَقُلْتُ:I said:بِأَبِيMay my fatherأَنْتَbeوَأُمِّي!and mother for you!أَنْتَDo youتَرْجُوhopeأَنْthatيَكُونَit will beذَلِكَthatمِفْتَاحاًa keyلِمَاto whatأَنَاIفِيهِ؟am in?

I said, "May my father and mother be your ransom! Do you hope that this will be a key to what I am suffering?"

قَالَ:He said:ذَاكَThatكَمَاis asأَقُولُI tellلَكَ.you.

He said, "That is as I tell you."

فَانْصَرَفْتُSo I departedوَقُلْتُ:and said:

So I departed and said:

أَتَانِيThere came to meمِنَfromالْمَهْدِيّقِAl-Mahdiقَوْلٌa wordكَأَنَّمَاas ifبِهِwith itاحْتَزَّseveredأَنْفِيmy noseمُدْمِنُan habitualالضِّغْنِgrudge-holderجَادِعُmutilator

A word came to me from Al-Mahdi, as if a chronic grudge-bearer and mutilator had severed my nose with it.

وَقُلْتُ،And I said,وَقَدْwhileخِفْتُI fearedالَّتِيthat whichلَاhas noشَوَىًrecovery/minor injuryلَهَاfor itبِلَاwithoutحَدَثٍ:incident:إِنِّيverily IإِلَىtoاللَّهِGodرَاجِعُam returning

And I said, having feared that which admits of no recovery, without any incident: Verily, to God I am returning.

وَمَاAnd notلِيfor meإِلَىtoالْمَهْدِيِّAl-Mahdiلَوْeven ifكُنْتُI wereمُذْنِباًa sinnerسِوَىexceptحِلْمِهِhis forbearanceالصَّافِيpureمِنَfromالنَّاسِpeopleشَافِعُas an intercessor

And I have no intercessor with Al-Mahdi, even if I were a sinner, other than his pure forbearance among people.

وَلَاNor isهُوَheعِنْدَatالسَّخَطِangerمِنْهُfrom himوَلَاnorالرِّضَىpleasureبِغَيْرِby other thanالَّذِيthat whichيَرْضَىis pleased withبِهِitاللَّهُGodصَانِعُacting

Nor is he, in his anger or his pleasure, acting by other than that with which God is pleased.

عَلَيْهِUpon himمِنَofالتَّقْوَىpietyرِدَاءٌis a cloakيُكِنُّهُthat shelters himوَلِلْحَقِّand for the truthنُورٌis a lightبَيْنَbetweenعَيْنَيْهِhis eyesسَاطِعُshining

Upon him is a cloak of piety that shelters him, and for the truth there is a shining light between his eyes.

يُغَضُّIs loweredلَهُfor himطَرْفُthe gaze ofالْعُيُونِeyesوَطَرْفُهُand his gazeعَلَىuponغَيْرِهِothersمِنْfromخَشْيَةِfear ofاللَّهِGodخَاشِعُhumbled

The gaze of eyes is lowered for him, and his gaze towards others is humbled out of fear of God.

هَلْDoesالْبَابُthe doorمُفْضٍleadبِيmeإِلَيْكَto youابْنَO son ofهَاشِمٍHashimفَعُذْرِيthen my excuseإِنْifأَفْضَىleadsبِيmeالْبَابُthe doorنَاصِعُis clear

Does the door lead me to you, O son of Hashim? Then my excuse, if the door leads me there, is clear.

أَتَيْتُI came toامْرَأًa manأَطْلَقْتَهُwhom you releasedمِنْfromوَثَاقِهِhis bondsوَقَدْwhileأُنْشِبَتْwere fastenedفِيinأُخْدَعَيْهِhis jugular veinsالْجَوَامِعُthe iron collars

I came to a man whom you released from his bonds, while the iron collars were fastened tightly around his jugular veins.

وَجَلَّىAnd you cleared awayضَبَابَthe fog ofالْعَدَمِdestitutionعَنْهُfrom himوَرَاشَهُand clothed/provided for himوَأَنْهَضَهُand raised him upمَعْرُوفُكَyour kindnessالْمُتَتَابِعُcontinuous

You cleared away the fog of destitution from him, provided for him, and raised him up with your continuous kindness.

فَقُلْتُSo I saidوَزِيرٌa vizierنَاصِحٌcounselingقَدْhasتَتَابَعَتْfollowed one anotherعَلَيْهِupon himبِإِنْعَامِwith the bounty ofالْإِمَامِthe Imamالصَّنَائِعُfavors

So I said: A sincere vizier upon whom the favors of the Imam's bounty have followed one another.

وَمَاAnd there wasكَانَfor meلِيtoإِلَّاexceptإِلَيْكَyouذَرِيعَةٌa meansوَمَاand notمَلِكٌa kingإِلَّاexceptإِلَيْهِto himالذَّرَائِعُare the means

I had no means to reach you, and to every king the means lead only through him.

وَإِنْAnd even ifكَانَwasمَطْوِيّاًfoldedعَلَىuponالْغَدْرِtreacheryكَشْحُهُhis flankفَلَمْyet I did notأَدْرِknowمِنْهُfrom himمَاwhatتُجِنُّconcealالْأَضَالِعُthe ribs

And even if his flank were folded upon treachery, I did not know from him what the ribs conceal.

وَقُلْAnd sayمِثْلَlikeمَاwhatقَالَsaidابْنُson ofيَعْقُوبَYa'qubيُوسُفُYusufلِإِخْوَتِهِto his brothersقَوْلاًa wordلَهُat whichالْقَلْبُthe heartنَائِعُthrives/softens

And say what Yusuf, son of Ya'qub, said to his brothers—a word at which the heart softens:

تَنَفَّسْBreathe easyفَلَاso there isتَثْرِيبَno blameإِنَّكَverily you areآمِنٌsafeوَإِنِّيand for you I amلَكَfor youالْمَعْرُوفُkindnessوَالْقَدْرُand rankجَامِعُuniter

Breathe easy, for there is no blame upon you, you are safe, and kindness and rank unite me to you.

فَمَاAnd notالنَّاسُare peopleإِلَّاexceptنَاظِرٌgazingمَتَشَوِّفٌeagerly watchingإِلَىtowardsكُلِّallمَاthatتُسْدِيyou bestowإِلَيَّupon meوَسَامِعُand listening

For people are nothing other than gazers eagerly watching everything you bestow upon me and listeners.

قَالَHe saidوَقَدْandقُلْتُI saidفِيinقَصِيدَةٍa poemأُخْرَى:another:

He said: And I said in another poem:

سَيَحْشُرُWill be resurrectedيَعْقُوبُYa'qubبْنُson ofدَاوُدَDawudخَائِباًdisappointedيَلُوحُgleamingكِتَابٌa recordبَيْنَbetweenعَيْنَيْهِhis eyesكَافِرُungrateful

Ya'qub ibn Dawud will be resurrected disappointed, with an ungrateful record gleaming between his eyes.

خِيَانَتُهُHis betrayal ofالْمَهْدِيَّAl-Mahdiأَوْدَتْruinedبِذِكْرِهِhis memoryفَأَمْسَىso he becameكَمَنْlike one whomقَدْhas beenغَيَّبَتْهُconcealed byالْمَقَابِرُthe graves

His betrayal of Al-Mahdi ruined his memory, so he became like one whom the graves have concealed.

بَدَاThere appearedمِنْكَfrom youلِلْمَهْدِيِّto Al-Mahdiكَالصُّبْحِlike the morningسَاطِعاًshiningمِنَofالْغِشِّdeceitمَاwhatكَانَتْused toتُجِنُّconcealالضَّمَائِرُinner thoughts

There appeared from you to Al-Mahdi, shining like the morning, of deceit what inner thoughts used to conceal.

وَهَلْAnd isلِبَيَاضِfor the whiteness ofالصُّبْحِmorningإِنْifلَاحَits light gleamsضَوْءُهُits lightفَجَابَand clears awayالدُّجَىthe darknessمِنْofظُلْمَةِthe gloom ofاللَّيْلِnightسَاتِرُa cover

And is there any cover for the whiteness of the morning when its light gleams and clears away the gloom of the night's darkness?

أَمَنْزِلَةًA statusفَوْقَaboveالَّتِيthat whichكُنْتَyou wereنِلْتَهَاhaving attainedتَعَاطَيْتَ،you sought,لَاmay youأَفْلَحْتَnot succeedمِمَّاin whatتُحَاذِرُyou beware of

A status above that which you had attained you sought—may you not succeed in what you beware of!

قَالَ:He said:ثُمَّThenأَتَيْتُI broughtبِهَاthemالْحَسَنَto Al-Hasanبَعْدَafterيَوْمَيْنِtwo daysفَقَالَ:and he said:مَاWhatصَنَعْتَ؟did you do?فَأَنْشَدْتُهُمَاSo I recited themإِيَّاهُ.to him.

He said: Then I brought them to Al-Hasan after two days, and he said, "What did you do?" So I recited them to him.

قَالَ:He said:اكْتُبْهُمَاWrite themلِي.for me.فَقُلْتُ:I said:قَدْI haveفَعَلْتُ.done so.فَقَالَ:He said:هَاتِهِمَا.Bring them here.

He said, "Write them for me." I said, "I have already done so." He said, "Bring them here."

فَتَنَاوَلَهُمَاSo he took themوَقَالَ:and said:لَسْتُI will notوَاضِعَهُمَاplace themمِنْfromيَدِيmy handحَتَّىuntilأَضَعَهُمَاI place themفِيinيَدِthe hand ofالْمَهْدِيِّ.Al-Mahdi.

So he took them and said, "I will not take them from my hand until I place them in the hand of Al-Mahdi."

ثُمَّThenمَضَىhe wentوَأَتَيْتُهُand I came to himمِنَonالْغَدِthe next dayفَقَالَ:and he said:مَاNotوَضَعْتُهُمَاdid I place themمِنْfromيَدِيmy handحَتَّىuntilوَضَعْتُهُمَاI placed themفِيinيَدِthe hand ofالْمَهْدِيِّAl-Mahdiفَقَرَأَهُمَاso he read themفَرَقَّand softenedلَكَtoward youوَأَمَرَand orderedبِإِدْخَالِكَyour admissionعَلَيْهِto himفَاحْضُرْso be presentيَوْمَonالِاثْنَيْنِ.Monday.

Then he left, and I came to him the next day. He said, "I did not take them from my hand until I placed them in the hand of Al-Mahdi. He read them, softened toward you, and ordered your admission to him, so be present on Monday."

فَحَضَرْتُSo I was presentفَخَرَجَand there came outعَلَيَّto meفَقَالَ:and said:قَدْHasعَلِمَknownأَمِيرُthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulبِمَكَانِكَyour placeوَقَدْand he hasأَحَبَّlovedأَنْthatيَجْعَلَhe makesلَكَfor youيَوْماًa dayيُشَرِّفُكَin which he honors youفِيهِin itوَيُبْلِغُand fulfillsبِكَ.for you.

So I was present, and someone came out to me and said, "The Commander of the Faithful has known of your presence, and he has desired to appoint a day for you in which he will honor you and fulfill your needs."

قُلْتُ:I said:فَمَتَىThen whenبِأَبِيmay my fatherأَنْتَbeوَأُمِّي؟and mother?قَالَ:He said:يَوْمَThursdayالْخَمِيسِ..

I said, "Then when, may my father and mother be your ransom?" He said, "Thursday."

فَعُدْتُSo I returnedإِلَيْهِto himيَوْمَonالْخَمِيسِThursdayفَإِذَاand beholdوُجُوهُthe notables ofبَنِيBanuالْعَبَّاسِAbbasيَدْخُلُونَwere enteringعَلَىuponالْمَهْدِيِّ،Al-Mahdi,فَلَمَّاand whenتَتَامَّwas completedالْمَجْلِسُthe assemblyدَعَانِيhe called meفَدَخَلْتُ،and I entered,فَسَلَّمْتُand I greetedفَرَدَّand he returnedعَلَيَّto meالسَّلَامَ،the greeting,فَقَالَ:and he said:إِنَّمَاIndeedحَبَسَكَkept youعَنِfromالدُّخُولِenteringانْقِطَاعُكَyour attachmentإِلَىtoالْفَاسِقِthe wickedيَعْقُوبَYa'qubبْنِson ofدَاوُدَ.Dawud.

So I returned to him on Thursday, and behold, the notables of Banu Abbas were entering upon Al-Mahdi. When the assembly was complete, he called me and I entered. I greeted him, and he returned the greeting to me, then said, "What kept you from entering was your attachment to the wicked Ya'qub ibn Dawud."

فَافْتَتَحْتُSo I openedالنَّشِيدَthe poemبِمَاwith whatقُلْتُI saidفِيregardingيَعْقُوبَYa'qubفَأَنْشَدْتُهُand I recited itثُمَّthenأَشَدْتُهُI recited to himقَوْلِيmy sayingفِيهِ:about him:طَرَقَتْكَVisited youزَائِرَةًas a visitorفَحَيِّso greetخَيَالَهَا.her phantom.

So I began the recitation with what I had said regarding Ya'qub and recited it to him, then I recited to him my saying about him: 'A visitor visited you, so greet her phantom.'

فَأُعْجِبَSo he was amazedبِذَلِكَby thatوَقَالَ:and said:جَزَاكَMay God rewardاللَّهُyouخَيْراً.with good.

He was amazed by that and said, "May God reward you with good."

فَقُلْتُ:I said:اشْهَدُواBear witnessهَذَاthisوَاللَّهِby Godالشَّرَفُ،is the honor,أَمِيرُthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulيَجْزِينِيrewards meخَيْراً،with good,ثُمَّthenأَنْشَدْتُهُ:I recited to him:أَعَادَكَMay there return to youمِنْfromذِكْرِthe mention ofالْأَحِبَّةِloved onesعَائِدُ،a returning one,فَلَمَّاand whenصِرْتُI reachedإِلَىtoقَوْلِي:my saying:

I said, "Bear witness, this by God is the honor! The Commander of the Faithful is rewarding me with good." Then I recited to him: 'May the remembrance of loved ones return to you,' and when I reached my saying:

أَيَادِيThe favors ofبَنِيBanuالْعَبَّاسِAbbasبِيضٌare whiteسَوَابِغٌabundantعَلَىuponكُلِّeveryقَوْمٍpeopleبَادِئَاتٌmanifestعَوَائِدُreturning

The favors of Banu Abbas are white and abundant upon every people, manifest and returning,

فَهُمْFor theyيَعْدِلُونَequalالسَّمْكَthe heightمِنْofقُبَّةِthe dome ofالْهُدَىguidanceكَمَاjust asيَعْدِلُequalالْبَيْتَthe HouseالْحَرَامَSacredالْقَوَاعِدُthe foundations

For they match the height of the dome of guidance, just as the foundations match the Sacred House.
