وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofجَابِرِJabirبْنِson ofسَمُرَةَSamurahقَالَ:he said:
And on the authority of Jabir ibn Samurah, he said:
رَأَيْتُI sawرَسُولَthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah bestow peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فِيonلَيْلَةِthe night ofالْبَدْرِthe full moon
on the night of the full moon,
وَعَلَيْهِand upon him wasحُلَّةٌa garmentحَمْرَاءُred
and he was wearing a red garment.
فَجَعَلْتُSo I beganأَنْظُرُto lookإِلَيْهِat himوَإِلَىand atالْقَمَرِthe moon
So I began to look at him and at the moon,
فَلَهُوَand indeed heأَحْسَنُwas more beautifulفِيinعَيْنَيّmy two eyesمِنَthanالْقَمَرِ.the moon.
and to me he was more beautiful than the moon.
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofجَابِرِJabirبْنِson ofزَيْدٍZaydعَنْfromأَبِيهِhis fatherقَالَ:he said:
And on the authority of Jabir ibn Zayd from his father, he said:
أَتَيْتُI came toالنَّبِيَّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah bestow peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
I came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فِيinمَسْجِدِthe mosque ofالْخَيْفِAl-Khayf
in the mosque of Al-Khayf,
فَنَاوَلَنِيand he handed meيَدَهُhis hand
and he handed me his hand,
فَإِذَاand lo,هِيَit wasأَطْيَبُmore fragrantمِنَthanالْمِسْكِmuskوَأَبْرَدُand coolerمِنَthanالثَّلْجِ.snow.
and it was more fragrant than musk and cooler than snow.
وَمِنْAnd fromفَضْلِهِhis virtueالَّذِيwhichأَبَرَّsurpassedعَلَىoverجَمِيعِallالْخَلَائِقِcreation
And among his virtues, which surpassed all creation,
وَمَحَاسِنِهِand his beauties,مَاis whatرُوِيَwas narratedعَنْfromوَهْبِWahbبْنِson ofمُنَبِّهٍMunabbihأَنَّهُthat heقَالَ:said:
and his fine qualities, is what was narrated from Wahb ibn Munabbih, that he said:
لَمَّاWhenخَلَقَcreatedاللَّهُAllahعَزَّthe Mightyوَجَلَّand Majesticالْأَرْضَthe earth
When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created the earth,
ارْتَجَتْit shookوَاضْطَرَبَتْand trembled
it shook and trembled,
فَكَتَبَso He wroteفِيonأَطْرَافِهَاits cornersمَحَمَّدٌMuhammad isرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllah
so He wrote on its corners: 'Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,'
فَسَكَنَتْ.and it became still.
and it became still.
وَأَمَّاAnd as forعَقْلُهُ،his intellect,عَلَيْهِupon himالصَّلَاةُbe prayersوَالسَّلَامُ،and peace,
And as for his intellect, upon him be prayers and peace,
فَقَدْit has indeedرُوِيَbeen narratedأَنَّthatعُقُولَthe intellects ofجَمِيعِallالْخَلَائِقِcreation
it has been narrated that the intellects of all creation,
مِنَfromالْأَوَّلِينَthe first onesوَالْآخِرِينَand the last ones,
from the first and the last,
فِيinجَنْبِcomparison toعَقْلِthe intellect ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah bestow peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
compared to the intellect of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
كَرَمْلَةٍis like a grain of sandمِنْfromبَيْنِamongجَمِيعِallرِمَالِthe sands ofالدُّنْيَا.the world.
is like a single grain of sand among all the sands of the world.
وَمِنْAnd fromمَحَاسِنِهِ،his fine qualities,صَلَّىmay Allah bestow peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,الْإِسْرَاءِis the Night Journey
And among his fine qualities, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is the Night Journey,
مَاwhatرُوِيَwas narratedعَنِfromالْحَسَنِAl-Hasanبْنِson ofأَبِيAbiالْحَسَنِAl-Hasanالْبَصْرِيِّ،Al-Basri,رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercyاللَّهُ،upon him,يَرْفَعُهُraising it upقَالَ:and saying:
what was narrated from Al-Hasan ibn Abi Al-Hasan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, attributing it (to the Prophet), saying:
قَالَHe saidرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah bestow peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
إِنِّيIndeed, Iلَنَائِمٌwas sleepingفِيinالْحِجْرِAl-Hijr
"Indeed, I was sleeping in Al-Hijr
إِذْwhenجَاءَcameجِبْرِيلُ،Jibril,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,
when Jibril, peace be upon him, came
فَغَمَزَنِيand nudged meبِرِجْلِهِwith his foot,فَجَلَسْتُso I sat up
and nudged me with his foot, so I sat up
فَلَمْand I didأَرَnot seeشَيْئاًanything.
and did not see anything.
ثُمَّThenعُدْتُI returnedلِمَضْجَعِي،to my sleeping place,
Then I returned to my sleeping place,
فَجَاءَنِيand he came to meالثَّانِيَةَa second timeفَغَمَزَنِيand nudged me,فَجَلَسْتُso I sat up
and he came to me a second time and nudged me, so I sat up,
وَأَخَذَand he tookبِعَضُدِيby my upper arm
and he took hold of my upper arm
فَخَرَجَand went outبِيwith meإِلَىtoبَابِthe gate ofالصَّفَاAl-Safa
and took me out to the gate of Al-Safa.
وَإِذَاAnd behold,أَنَاI wasبِدَابَّةٍwith a mountأَبْيَضَwhiteبَيْنَbetweenالْحِمَارِthe donkeyوَالْبَغْلِand the mule,
And behold, there was a white mount, between a donkey and a mule,
لَهُhavingجَنَاحَانِtwo wingsفِيonفَخِذَيْهِits thighs,
with two wings on its thighs,
يَضَعُit placesحَافِرَهُits hoofمُنْتَهَىat the utmost limit ofطَرْفِهِ،its sight.
placing its hoof at the utmost limit of its sight.
فَقَالَSaidلِيto meجِبْرِيلُ:Jibril:ارْكَبْ"MountيَاOمُحَمَّدُ،Muhammad,"
Jibril said to me: "Mount, O Muhammad."
فَدَنَوْتُSo I drew nearإِلَيْهِto itلِأَرْكَبَto mountفَتَنَحَّىand it moved awayعَنِّي.from me.
So I drew near to it to mount, but it moved away from me.
فَقَالَSaidلَهُto itجِبْرِيلُ،Jibril,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ:be peace:
Jibril, peace be upon him, said to it:
يَا"OبُرَاقُBuraq,مَاwhat isلَكَthe matter with you?فَوَاللَّهِFor by Allah,مَاhas notرَكِبَكَmounted youخَيْرٌanyone betterمِنْهُthan himقَطُّ!ever!"
"O Buraq, what is the matter with you? For by Allah, no one better than him has ever mounted you!"
فَرَكِبْتُSo I mountedوَخَرَجْتُand set outوَمَعِيwith meصَاحِبِيwas my companion,
So I mounted and set out, and my companion was with me,
لَاneitherأَفُوتُهُescaping himوَلَاnorيَفُوتُنِيhe escaping me,
neither leaving him behind nor he leaving me behind,
حَتَّىuntilانْتَهَىhe reachedبِيwith meإِلَىtoبَيْتِthe House ofالْمَقْدِسِAl-Maqdis (Jerusalem)
until he brought me to Bayt al-Maqdis.
فَوَجَدْتُSo I foundفِيهِin itنَفَراًa groupمِنَofالْأَنْبِيَاءِthe Prophets
So I found in it a group of the Prophets
قَدْwhoجُمِعُواhad been gatheredلِيfor me,فَأَمَمْتُهُمْ،and I led them in prayer,
who had been gathered for me, and I led them in prayer.
ثُمَّThenأُتِيتُI was broughtبِإِنَاءَيْنِtwo vesselsمِنْcontainingخَمْرٍwineوَلَبَنٍand milk.
Then I was brought two vessels containing wine and milk.
فَتَنَاوَلْتُSo I tookاللَّبَنَthe milkوَشَرِبْتُand drankمِنْهُfrom itوَرَْتَكْتُand leftالْخَمْرَ.the wine.
So I took the milk and drank from it, and left the wine.
فَقَالَSaidجِبْرِيلُ،Jibril,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ:be peace:
Jibril, peace be upon him, said:
هُدِيتَ"You have been guidedوَهُدِيَتْand your nation has been guidedأُمَّتُكَto the natural path,وَحُرِّمَتْand has been forbiddenعَلَيْهِمُupon themالْخَمْرُ،the wine."
"You have been guided to the true nature and your nation has been guided, and wine has been forbidden to them."
ثُمَّThenأَصْبَحْتُI woke upبِمَكَّةَ.in Makkah.
Then I woke up in Makkah.
قَالَ:He said:فَلَمَّاSo whenذَكَرَmentionedرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllahذَلِكَthat
He said: So when the Messenger of Allah mentioned that,
ارْتَدَّapostatizedكَثِيرٌmanyمِمَّنْof those whoكَانَhad beenآمَنَbelievingبِهِin him,
many of those who had believed in him apostatized,
وَقَالُوا:and they said:سُبْحَانَ"Glory be toاللَّهِ!Allah!
and they said: "Glory be to Allah!
أَذَهَبَDid goمُحَمَّدٌMuhammadإِلَىtoالشَّامِAl-Shamفِيinسَاعَةٍan hourمِنَofاللَّيْلِthe night
Did Muhammad go to Al-Sham in a part of the night
ثُمَّthenرَجَعَreturnedوَالْعِيرُwhile the caravanتَطْرُدُtravelsشَهْراًa monthمُدْبِرَةًgoingوَشَهْراًand a monthمُقْبِلَةً!returning?"
and then return, whereas the caravan takes a month traveling out and a month returning?"
فَبَلَغَSo reachedذَلِكَthatأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith him,عَنْهُ،and
That reached Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him,
فَأَقْبَلَso he came forwardحَتَّىuntilجَلَسَhe satبَيْنَin front ofيَدَيْthe hands ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah bestow peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
so he came until he sat before the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فَقَالَ:and said:يَا"OرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllah,مَاwhat isيَقُولُsayingهَؤُلَاءِ؟these people?
and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what are these people saying?
يَزْعُمُونَThey claimأَنَّكَthat youحَدَّثْتَهُمْnarrated to themبِأَنَّكَthat youقَدْindeedأَتَيْتَcame toالشَّامَAl-Shamهَذِهِthisاللَّيْلَةَnightوَرَجَعْتَand returnedمِنْfromلَيْلَتِكَ!your night!"
They claim that you told them you came to Al-Sham this night and returned the same night!"
قَالَ:He said:قَدْIndeedكَانَit wasذَاكَ.that.
He said: "That is indeed so."
قَالَ:He said:يَا"OرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllah,فَصِفْthen describeلِيto meالْمَسْجِدَ.the mosque."
He said: "O Messenger of Allah, then describe the mosque to me."
فَجَعَلْتُSo I beganأَصِفُهُdescribing itلِأَبِيto Abuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercyاللَّهُ،upon him,
He said: So I began describing it to Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him,
وَأَنَاwhile Iأَنْظُرُwas lookingإِلَيْهِat it
while I was looking at it,
فَكُلَّمَاand wheneverحَدَّثْتُهُI described to himعَنْaboutشَيْءٍsomethingقَالَ:he said:
and every time I described something of it to him, he said:
صَدَقْتَ"You have spoken the truth,أَشْهَدُI bear witnessأَنَّكَthat you areرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,"
"You have spoken the truth; I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah,"
حَتَّىuntilفَرَغْتُI finishedمِنْfromصِفَتِهِ،its description.
until I finished describing it.
فَقَالَThen saidرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllahيَوْمَئِذٍ:that day:
The Messenger of Allah said on that day:
فَأَنْتَ"You areالصِّدِّيقُAl-SiddiqيَاOأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍ.Bakr."
"You are Al-Siddiq, O Abu Bakr."
[مَحَاسِنِ⟦[محاسنِالْمِعْرَاجِ]المعراج]⟧
[The Virtues of the Night Ascension]
عَبْدَةُAbdahبْنُson ofسُلَيْمَانَSulaymanعَنْfromسَعِيدِSaeedبْنِson ofأَبِيAbiعَرُوبَةَArubahعَنْfromقَتَادَةَQatadahعَنْfromأَنَسِAnasبْنِson ofمَالِكٍMalikقَالَ:he said:
Abdah ibn Sulayman from Saeed ibn Abi Arubah from Qatadah from Anas ibn Malik, he said:
أَخْبَرَنَاNarrated to usنَبِيُّthe Prophet ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah bestow peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,قَالَ:and said:
The Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, narrated to us and said:
بَيْنَاWhileأَنَاIبَيْنَbetweenالْيَقْظَانِbeing awakeوَالنَّائِمِand sleeping
"While I was between wakefulness and sleep
عِنْدَatالْبَيْتِthe House (Kaaba),
at the House,
إِذْwhenسَمِعْتُI heardقَائِلاًa speakerيَقُولُ:saying:
I heard a speaker saying:
أَحَدُ"One ofالثَّلَاثَةِthe threeبَيْنَbetweenالرَّجُلَيْنِ،"the two men,"
"One of the three between the two men,"
فَانْطَلَقَso he set offبِيwith me,فَشَرَحَand he openedصَدْرِيmy chestوَاسْتَخْرَجَand extractedقَلْبِي،my heart.
so he set off with me, and he opened my chest and extracted my heart.
ثُمَّThenأُتِيتُI was broughtبِطَسْتٍa basinمِنْofذَهَبٍgoldفِيهِcontainingمِنْofمَاءِwater ofزَمْزَمَZamzam,
Then I was brought a basin of gold containing water from Zamzam,
فَغُسِلَand it was washedبِهِwith itثُمَّand thenأُعِيدَreturnedمَكَانَهُto its place,
and it was washed with it, then returned to its place,
وَحُشِيَand it was filledإِيماناًwith faithوَحِكْمَةً،and wisdom.
and it was filled with faith and wisdom.
ثُمَّThenأُتِيتُI was broughtبِدَابَّةٍa mountفَوْقَaboveالْحِمَارِthe donkeyوَدُونَand belowالْبَغْلِthe mule,
Then I was brought a mount larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule,
يَضَعُit placesحَافِرَهُits hoofعِنْدَatأَقْصَىthe farthestطَرْفِهِlimit of its sight,
placing its hoof at the farthest limit of its sight.
فَحُمِلْتُSo I was carriedعَلَيْهِupon it,فَانْطَلَقْنَاand we set offحَتَّىuntilأَتَيْنَاwe came toالسَّمَاءَthe heavenالدُّنْيَاthe lowest,
So I was mounted upon it, and we set off until we came to the lowest heaven.
فَاسْتَفْتَحَSo Jibril asked to openجِبْرِيلُJibril,فَقِيلَ:and it was said:مَنْ"Who isهَذَا؟this?"
Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was said: "Who is this?"
قَالَ:He said:جِبْرِيلُ."Jibril."
He said: "Jibril."
قِيلَ:It was said:وَمَنْ"And who isمَعَكَ؟with you?"
It was said: "And who is with you?"
قَالَ:He said:مُحَمَّدٌ."Muhammad."
He said: "Muhammad."
قِيلَ:It was said:وَقَدْ"Has he beenبُعِثَsent forإِلَيْهِ؟as a prophet?"
It was said: "And has he been sent for?"
قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ."Yes."
He said: "Yes."
فَفُتِحَSo it was openedلَنَا،for us,قَالُوا:and they said:مَرْحَباً"Welcomeبِهِto him,وَلَنِعْمَand excellentالْمَجِيءُis the arrivalجَاءَ.he has come!"
So it was opened for us, and they said: "Welcome to him, and what an excellent visitor has come!"
فَأَتَيْتُThen I cameعَلَىtoآدَمَAdamفَقُلْتُ:and said:
Then I came to Adam and said:
يَا"OجِبْرِيلُJibril,مَنْwho isهَذَا؟this?"
"O Jibril, who is this?"
قَالَ:He said:هَذَا"This isأَبُوكَyour fatherآدَمُ.Adam."
He said: "This is your father Adam."
فَسَلَّمْتُSo I greetedعَلَيْهِhim with peace,فَقَالَ:and he said:مَرْحَباً"Welcomeبِالِابْنِto the righteous sonالصَّالِحِandوَالنَّبِيِّthe righteousالصَّالِحِ.Prophet."
So I greeted him with peace, and he said: "Welcome to the righteous son and the righteous Prophet."
وَانْطَلَقْنَاAnd we set offحَتَّىuntilأَتَيْنَاwe came toالسَّمَاءَthe heavenالثَّانِيَةَthe second.
And we set off until we came to the second heaven.
فَاسْتَفْتَحَJibril asked to openجِبْرِيلُ،it,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,فَقِيلَ:and it was said:مَنْ"Who isهَذَا؟this?"
Jibril, peace be upon him, asked for the gate to be opened, and it was said: "Who is this?"
قَالَ:He said:جِبْرِيلُ."Jibril."
He said: "Jibril."
قِيلَ:It was said:وَمَنْ"And who isمَعَكَ؟with you?"
It was said: "And who is with you?"
قَالَ:He said:مُحَمَّدٌ."Muhammad."
He said: "Muhammad."
قِيلَ:It was said:وَقَدْ"Has he beenبُعِثَsent forإِلَيْهِ؟as a prophet?"
It was said: "And has he been sent for?"
قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ."Yes."
He said: "Yes."
فَفُتِحَSo it was openedلَنَاfor usوَقَالُوا:and they said:مَرْحَباً"Welcomeبِهِto him,وَلَنِعْمَand excellentالْمَجِيءُis the arrivalجَاءَ.he has come!"
So it was opened for us, and they said: "Welcome to him, and what an excellent visitor has come!"
فَأَتَيْتُThen I cameعَلَىtoيَحْيَىYahyaوَعِيسَىand Isaفَقُلْتُ:and said:
Then I came to Yahya and Isa and said:
يَا"OجِبْرِيلُJibril,مَنْwho areهَذَانِ؟these two?"
"O Jibril, who are these two?"
قَالَ:He said:عِيسَى"Isaوَيَحْيَى.and Yahya."
He said: "Isa and Yahya."
قَالَ:He said:فَسَلَّمْتُSo I greetedعَلَيْهِمَاthem with peace,فَقَالَا:and they said:
He said: So I greeted them with peace, and they said:
مَرْحَباً"Welcomeبِالْأَخِto the righteous brotherالصَّالِحِandوَالنَّبِيِّthe righteousالصَّالِحِ.Prophet."
"Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous Prophet."
ثُمَّThenانْطَلَقْنَاwe set offحَتَّىuntilأَتَيْنَاwe came toالسَّمَاءَthe heavenالثَّالِثَةَthe third,
Then we set off until we came to the third heaven,
فَكَانَand it wasمِثْلَlikeقَوْلِهِمُtheir sayingالْأَوَّلِ،the first,
and it was like their first saying.
فَأَتَيْتُThen I cameعَلَىtoيُوسُفَYusufفَسَلَّمْتُand greetedعَلَيْهِhim with peace,فَقَالَ:and he said:
Then I came to Yusuf and greeted him with peace, and he said:
مَرْحَباً"Welcomeبِالْأَخِto the righteous brotherالصَّالِحِandوَالنَّبِيِّthe righteousالصَّالِحِ.Prophet."
"Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous Prophet."
ثُمَّThenانْطَلَقْنَاwe set offحَتَّىuntilأَتَيْنَاwe came toالسَّمَاءَthe heavenالرَّابِعَةَ،the fourth,
Then we set off until we came to the fourth heaven.
فَأَتَيْتُSo I cameعَلَىtoإِدْرِيسَ،Idris,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,فَسَلَّمْتُand greetedعَلَيْهِhim with peace,فَقَالَ:and he said:
So I came to Idris, peace be upon him, and greeted him with peace, and he said:
مَرْحَباً"Welcomeبِالْأَخِto the righteous brotherالصَّالِحِandوَالنَّبِيِّthe righteousالصَّالِحِ.Prophet."
"Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous Prophet."
ثُمَّThenأَتَيْنَاwe came toالسَّمَاءَthe heavenالْخَامِسَةَthe fifth,فَأَتَيْتُand I cameعَلَىtoهَارُونَHarunفَسَلَّمْتُand greetedعَلَيْهِhim with peace,فَقَالَand he saidمِثْلَlikeذَلِكَ.that.
Then we came to the fifth heaven, and I came to Harun and greeted him with peace, and he said the like of that.
ثُمَّThenأَتَيْنَاwe came toالسَّمَاءَthe heavenالسَّادِسَةَthe sixth,فَأَتَيْتُand I cameعَلَىtoمُوسَى،Musa,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,فَقَالَand he saidمِثْلَlikeذَلِكَ.that.
Then we came to the sixth heaven, and I came to Musa, peace be upon him, and he said the like of that.
ثُمَّThenأَتَيْنَاwe came toالسَّمَاءَthe heavenالسَّابِعَةَthe seventh,فَأَتَيْتُand I cameعَلَىtoإِبْرَاهِيمَ،Ibrahim,عَلَيْهِupon himوَعَلَىand uponآلِهِhis familyالسَّلَامُ،be peace,
Then we came to the seventh heaven, and I came to Ibrahim, upon him and his family be peace,
فَقَالَ:and he said:مَرْحَباً"Welcomeبِالِابْنِto the righteous sonالصَّالِحِandوَالنَّبِيِّthe righteousالصَّالِحِ.Prophet."
and he said: "Welcome to the righteous son and the righteous Prophet."
