وَمِنْهُمْAnd among themصَاحِبُis the companion ofنَجِيحِNajihiبْنِibnسُلَيْفٍSulaifالْيَرْبُوعِيِّ،al-Yarbu'i,

And among them is the companion of Najihi ibn Sulaif al-Yarbu'i,

فَإِنَّهُfor indeed heذَكَرَmentionedأَنَّthatنَجِيحاًNajihiخَرَجَwent outيَوْماًone dayإِلَىforالصَّيْدِhunting

for indeed he mentioned that Najihi went out one day for hunting

فَعَرَضَand there appearedلَهُto himحِمَارُa wildوَحْشٍdonkeyفَاتَّبَعَهُso he followed itحَتَّىuntilدَفَعَhe reachedإِلَىaأَكَمَةٍmound

and there appeared to him a wild donkey so he followed it until he reached a mound

فَإِذَاand loهُوَhe wasبِرَجُلٍa manأَعْمَىblindأَسْوَدَblackقَاعِدٍsittingفِيinأَطْمَارٍrags

and lo he was a blind black man sitting in rags

بَيْنَbeforeيَدَيْهِhimذَهَبٌgoldوَفِضَّةٌand silverوَدُرٌّand pearlsوَيَاقُوتٌ،and rubies,

before him gold and silver and pearls and rubies,

فَدَنَاso he drew nearمِنْهُto himنَجِيحٌNajihiفَتَنَاوَلَand reached outمِنْهَاfor some of itبَعْضَهَا،some,

so Najihi drew near to him and reached out for some of it,

فَلَمْand he was notيَسْتَطِعْableأَنْtoيُحَرِّكَmoveيَدَهُhis handحَتَّىuntilأَلْقَاهَا،he dropped it,

and he was not able to move his hand until he dropped it,

فَقَالَ:so he said:يَاOهَذَاmanمَاwhatالَّذِيisبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيْكَyouوَكَيْفَand howتَسْتَطِعُare you ableحَمْلَهُ،to carry it,

so he said: O man what is before you and how are you able to carry it,

أَلَكَis it yoursهُوَitأَمْorلِغَيْرِكَ؟for someone else?فَإِنِّيFor indeed Iأَعْجَبُam amazedمِمَّاat whatأَرَى!I see!

is it yours or for someone else? For indeed I am amazed at what I see!

أَجَوَادٌAre you generousأَنْتَyouفَتَجُودَso you give generouslyلَنَاto usأَمْorبَخِيلٌstingyفَأَعْذُرَكَ؟so I excuse you?

Are you generous you so you give generously to us or stingy so I excuse you?

فَقَالَSo saidالْأَعْمَى:the blind man:كَيْفَHowتَطْلُبُdo you seekمَالَwealthرَجُلٍof a manقَدْwhoغَابَhas been absentمُنْذُforسَنَتَيْنِtwo years

So said the blind man: How do you seek wealth of a man who has been absent for two years

وَهُوَand he isسَعْدُSa'dبْنُibnخَشْرَمِKhashramبْنِibnشَمَّاسٍ؟Shammas?فَأْتِنِيSo bring meبِسَعْدٍSa'dيُعْطِكَhe will give youمَاwhatتَشَاءُ.you wish.

and he is Sa'd ibn Khashram ibn Shammas? So bring me Sa'd he will give you what you wish.

فَانْطَلَقَSo departedنَجِيحٌNajihiمُسْرِعاًhurriedlyقَدْwhileاسْتُطِيرَwas startledفُؤَادُهُhis heartحَتَّىuntilوَصَلَhe reachedإِلَىhisمَحَلَّتِهِsettlement

So departed Najihi hurriedly while his heart was startled until he reached his settlement

وَدَخَلَand enteredخِبَاءَهُhis tentفَوَضَعَand placedرَأْسَهُhis headوَنَامَand sleptلِمَاbecause of whatبِهِwas with himمِنَofالْغَمِّgrief

and entered his tent and placed his head and slept because of what was with him of grief

لَاnotيَدْرِيknowingمَنْwhoسَعْدٌ،Sa'd is,فَأَتَاهُso came to himآتٍa visitorفِيinمَنَامِهِhis sleep

not knowing who Sa'd is, so came to him a visitor in his sleep

فَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:يَاOنَجِيحُNajihiإِنَّindeedسَعْدَSa'dبْنَibnخَشْرَمٍKhashramفِيis inحَيِّthe tribe ofمُحَلَّمٍMuhallamمِنْfromوَلَدِthe descendants ofذُهْلِDhuhrبْنِibnشَيْبَانَ،Shaibani,

and said to him: O Najihi indeed Sa'd ibn Khashram is in the tribe of Muhallam from the descendants of Dhuhl ibn Shaiban,

فَخَرَجَso he went outوَسَأَلَand askedعَنْaboutبَنِيthe sons ofمُحَلَّمٍMuhallamثُمَّthenسَأَلَaskedعَنْaboutخَشْرَمٍKhashram

so he went out and asked about the sons of Muhallam then asked about Khashram

فَإِذَاand loهُوَhe wasبِشَيْخٍan old manقَاعِدٍsittingعَلَىatبَابِthe door ofخِبَائِهِ،his tent,فَحَيَّاهُso Najihi greeted himنَجِيحٌandفَرَدَّhe returnedعَلَيْهِ.the greeting.

and lo he was an old man sitting at the door of his tent, so Najihi greeted him and he returned the greeting.

فَقَالَAnd saidلَهُto himنَجِيحٌ:Najihi:مَنْWhoأَنْتَ؟are you?قَالَ:He said:خَشْرَمُKhashramبْنُibnشَمَّاسٍ.Shammas.

And said to him Najihi: Who are you? He said: Khashram ibn Shammas.

قَالَ:He said:وَأَيْنَAnd where isابْنُكَ؟your son?قَالَ:He said:خَرَجَHe went outفِيinطَلَبِsearch ofنَجِيحِNajihiبْنِibnسُلَيْفٍSulaifالْيَرْبُوعِيِّal-Yarbu'i

He said: And where is your son? He said: He went out in search of Najihi ibn Sulaif al-Yarbu'i

وَذَلِكَand that isأَنَّbecauseآتِياًa visitorأَتَاهُcame to himفِيinمَنَامِهِhis sleepفَحَدَّثَهُand told himأَنَّthatمَالاًwealthلَهُof hisفِيis inنَوَاحِيthe regions ofبَنِيBanuيَرْبُوعٍYarbu'لَاnotيَعْلَمُknowingلَهُitإِلَّاexceptنَجِيحٌ،Najihi,

and that is because a visitor came to him in his sleep and told him that wealth of his is in the regions of Banu Yarbu' not knowing it except Najihi,

فَضَرَبَso struckنَجِيحٌNajihiبَطْنَthe flank ofفَرَسِهِhis horseوَهُوَwhileيَقُولُ:he was saying:

so Najihi struck the flank of his horse while he was saying:

أَيَطْلُبُنِيDoes he seek meمَنْhe whoعَنَانِيtroubled meطِلَابُهُhis seeking......فَيَاSo Oلَيْتَنِيwould that Iأَلْقَاكَmeet youسَعْدُSa'dبْنَibnخَشْرَمِKhashram

Does he seek me he who troubled me his seeking ... So O would that I meet you Sa'd ibn Khashram

أَتَيْتَYou came toبَنِيBanuيَرْبُوعٍYarbu'تَطْلُبُنِيseeking meبِهِthereby......وَقَدْand indeedجِئْتُI cameكَيْin order toأَلْقَاكَmeet youحَيَّO tribe ofالْمُحَلَّمِal-Muhallam

You came to Banu Yarbu' seeking me thereby ... and indeed I came in order to meet you O tribe of al-Muhallam

فَلَمَّاSo whenدَنَاhe drew nearمِنْtoمَحَلَّتِهِhis settlementاسْتَقْبَلَhe was met byسَعْداًSa'dفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:

So when he drew near to his settlement he was met by Sa'd and said to him:

أَيُّهَاOالرَّاكِبُriderهَلْhaveلَقِيتَyou metسَعْداًSa'dفِيamongبَنِيBanuيَرْبُوعٍ؟Yarbu'?قَالَ:He said:أَنَاI amسَعْدٌSa'dفَهَلْso doتَدُلُّyou guideعَلَىtoنَجِيحٍ؟Najihi?

O rider have you met Sa'd among Banu Yarbu'? He said: I am Sa'd so do you guide to Najihi?

قَالَ:He said:أَنَاI amنَجِيحٌ،Najihi,وَحَدَّثَهُand he told himبِالْحَدِيثِthe storyثُمَّthenقَالَ:said:الدَّالُThe guideعَلَىtoالْخَيْرِgoodكَفَاعِلِهِ،is like the doer of it,وَهُوَand heأَوَّلُis the firstمَنْwhoقَالَهُ.said it.

He said: I am Najihi, and he told him the story then said: The guide to good is like the doer of it, and he is the first who said it.

فَانْطَلَقَاSo they departedحَتَّىuntilأَتَيَاthey came toذَلِكَthatالْمَكَانَ،place,فَتَوَارَىand hidالرَّجُلُthe manحِينَwhenأَبْصَرَهُمَاhe saw them both

So they departed until they came to that place, and hid the man when he saw them both

وَتَرَكَand leftالْمَالَthe wealthفَأَخَذَهُso took itسَعْدٌSa'dكُلُّهُ.all of it.فَقَالَAnd saidلَهُto himنَجِيحٌ:Najihi:يَاOسَعْدُSa'dقَاسِمْنِي!divide with me!

and left the wealth so took it Sa'd all of it. And said to him Najihi: O Sa'd divide with me!

فَقَالَSo saidلَهُ:to him:اطْوِFoldعَنْfromمَالِيmy wealthكَشْحاً،a flank,وَأَبَىand refusedأَنْtoيُعْطِيَهُ.give him.

So said to him: Fold from my wealth a flank, and refused to give him.

فَانْتَضَىSo drewنَجِيحٌNajihiسَيْفَهُhis swordفَجَعَلَand beganيَضْرِبُهُstriking himحَتَّىuntilبَرَدَ،he grew cold (died),

So drew Najihi his sword and began striking him until he grew cold (died),

فَلَمَّاso whenوَقَعَhe fellقَتِيلاًslainتَحَوَّلَturnedالرَّجُلُthe manالْحَافِظُguardingلِلْمَالِthe wealthسِعْلَاةًinto a she-demon

so when he fell slain turned the man guarding the wealth into a she-demon

فَأَسْرَعَand hastenedفِيinأَكْلِeatingسَعْدٍSa'dوَعَادَand returnedالْمَالُthe wealthإِلَىtoمَكَانِهِ،its place,

and hastened in eating Sa'd and returned the wealth to its place,

فَلَمَّاso whenرَأَىsawنَجِيحٌNajihiذَلِكَthatوَلَّىhe turnedهَارِباًfleeingإِلَىtoقَوْمِهِ.his people.

so when saw Najihi that he turned fleeing to his people.

قَالَ:He said:وَكَانَAnd wasأَبُوAbuعُمَيْسٍUmaisبَخِيلاًstingyفَكَانَso he wasإِذَاwheneverوَقَعَfellالدِّرْهَمُa dirhamفِيintoيَدِهِhis hand

He said: And was Abu Umais stingy so he was whenever fell a dirham into his hand

نَقَرَهُhe tapped itبِإِصْبَعِهِwith his fingerثُمَّthenيَقُولُhe would sayلَهُ:to it:كَمْHow manyمِنْofمَدِينَةٍcityقَدْhaveدَخَلْتَهَاyou entered

he tapped it with his finger then he would say to it: How many of city have you entered

وَيَدٍand handقَدْhaveوَقَعْتَyou fallenفِيهَاin itوَالْآنَand nowاسْتَقَرَّhas settledبِكَwith youالْقَرَارُthe dwellingوَاطْمَأَنَّتْand found peaceبِكَwith youالدَّارُ!the home!

and hand have you fallen in it and now has settled with you the dwelling and found peace with you the home!

ثُمَّThenيَرْمِيhe would throwبِهِitفِيintoصُنْدُوقِهِhis chestفَيَكُونُso that would beذَلِكَthatآخِرَthe lastالْعَهْدِof the meetingبِهِ.with it.

Then he would throw it into his chest so that would be that the last of the meeting with it.

وَقِيلَ:And it was said:وَنَظَرَAnd lookedسُلَيْمَانُSulaimanبْنُibnمُزَاحِمٍMuzahimإِلَىatدِرْهَمٍa dirhamفَقَالَ:and said:

And it was said: And looked Sulaiman ibn Muzahim at a dirham and said:

فِيInشِقٍّa sideلَاLaإِلَهَilahaإِلَّاillaاللَّهُ،Allah,وَفِيand inشِقٍّa sideمُحَمَّدٌMuhammadرَسُولُMessenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allahاللَّهُblessعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,

In a side La ilaha illa Allah, and in a side Muhammad Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,

مَاitيَنْبَغِيbehoovesأَنْthatيَكُونَit beهَذَاthisإِلَّاexceptمُعَاذَةً،an amulet,وَقَذَفَهُand he cast itفِيintoصُنْدُوقِهِ.his chest.

it behooves that it be this except an amulet, and he cast it into his chest.

وَذَكَرُواAnd they mentionedأَنَّهُthatكَانَthere wasبِالرِّيِّin Rayyعَامِلٌan officialعَلَىoverالْخَرَاجِthe land taxيُقَالُwho was calledلَهُto himالْمُسَيَّبُal-Musayyab

And they mentioned that there was in Rayy an official over the land tax who was called to him al-Musayyab

فَأَتَاهُso came to himشَاعِرٌa poetفَامْتَدَحَهُand praised himفَسَعَلَso he coughedسَعْلَةًa coughفَضَرَطَ،and farted,

so came to him a poet and praised him so he coughed a cough and farted,

فَأَنْشَأَso beganالشَّاعِرُthe poetيَقُولُ:saying:

so began the poet saying:

أَتَيْتُI came toالْمُسَيَّبَal-Musayyabفِيforحَاجَةٍa need......فَمَاso he keptزَالَonيَسْعَلُcoughingحَتَّىuntilضَرَطَhe farted

I came to al-Musayyab for a need ... so he kept on coughing until he farted

فَقَالَSo he saidغَلِطْنَاWe made a mistake inحِسَابِthe calculation ofالْخَرَاجِthe land tax......فَقُلْتُso I saidمِنَfromالضَّرْطِthe fartجَاءَcameالْغَلَطُthe mistake

So he said We made a mistake in the calculation of the land tax ... so I said from the fart came the mistake

فَوَلِعَSo became obsessedبِهِwith himالصِّبْيَانُ،the boys,فَكَانَso wheneverكُلَّمَاevery timeمَرَّhe passedقَالُوا:they said:مِنَFromالضَّرْطِthe fartجَاءَcameالْغَلَطُ.the mistake.

So became obsessed with him the boys, so whenever every time he passed they said: From the fart came the mistake.

فَمَاSo theyزَالُواkeptيَقُولُونَsayingذَلِكَthatحَتَّىuntilهَرَبَhe fledمِنْهَاfrom itمِنْwithoutغَيْرِbeingعَزْلٍ.dismissed.

So they kept saying that until he fled from it without being dismissed.

وَكَانَAnd wasأَبُوAbuالْأَسْوَدِal-Aswadالدُّؤَلِيُّal-Du'aliبَخِيلاًstingyوَهُوَand heالْقَائِلُis the one who saidلِبَنِيهِ:to his sons:

And was Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali stingy and he is the one who said to his sons:

لَاDo notتُجَاوِدُواout-generosityاللَّهَAllahفَإِنَّهُfor indeed He isأَجْوَدُmore generousوَأَمْجَدُand more gloriousوَلَوْand ifشَاءَHe willedأَنْtoيُوَسِّعَexpandعَلَىuponالنَّاسِthe peopleكُلِّهِمْall of themحَتَّىuntilلَاnotيَكُونَthere would beفَقِيرٌa poor personلَفَعَلَ.He would have done so.

Do not out-generosity Allah for indeed He is more generous and more glorious and if He willed to expand upon the people all of them until not there would be a poor person He would have done so.

وَسَمِعَAnd he heardرَجُلاًa manيَقُولُ:saying:مَنْWhoيُعْشِيwill feed dinner toالْجَائِعَ.the hungry person.فَعَشَّاهُ،So he fed him dinner,

And he heard a man saying: Who will feed dinner to the hungry person. So he fed him dinner,

ثُمَّthenذَهَبَhe wentليُخْرِجَto take him outفَقَالَ:and said:هَيْهَاتَFar from itتَخْرُجُyou go outفَتُؤْذِيَand harmغَيْرِيsomeone elseمِنَofالْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsكَمَاasآذَيْتَنِي!you harmed me!

then he went to take him out and said: Far from it you go out and harm someone else of the Muslims as you harmed me!

وَوَضَعَAnd he placedرِجْلَهُhis footفِيinالْأَدْهَمِthe iron shackleحَتَّىuntilأَصْبَحَ.morning came.

And he placed his foot in the iron shackle until morning came.

قَالَ:He said:وَكَانَAnd wasرَجُلٌa manيَأْتِيwho came toابْنَIbnالْمُقَفَّعِal-Muqaffa'فَيُلِحُّand persistedعَلَيْهِupon himوَيَسْأَلُهُand asked himالْغَدَاءَfor lunchعِنْدَهُat his place

He said: And was a man who came to Ibn al-Muqaffa' and persisted upon him and asked him for lunch at his place

فَيَقُولُ:so he would say:لَعَلَّكَPerhaps youتَظُنُّthinkأَنِّيthat Iأَتَكَلَّفُput myself to troubleلَكَfor youشَيْئاً!with something!وَاللَّهِBy AllahلَاI will notأُقَدِّمُserveإِلَيْكَto youإِلَّاexceptمَاwhatعِنْدِي.is with me.

so he would say: Perhaps you think that I put myself to trouble for you with something! By Allah I will not serve to you except what is with me.

فَلَمَّاSo whenأَتَاهُhe came to himإِذْloلَيْسَthere was notفِيinبَيْتِهِhis houseإِلَّاexceptكَسَرٌdry crustsيَابِسَةٌof breadوَمِلْحٌand coarseجَرِيشٌ.salt.

So when he came to him lo there was not in his house except dry crusts of bread and coarse salt.

وَجَاءَAnd cameسَائِلٌa beggarإِلَىtoالْبَابِthe doorفَقَالَ:and said:وَسَّعَMay expandاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْكَ،upon you,فَلَمْand he did notيَذْهَبْ،leave,

And came a beggar to the door and said: May expand Allah upon you, and he did not leave,

فَقَالَ:so he said:وَاللَّهِBy AllahلَئِنْifخَرَجْتُI go outإِلَيْكَto youلَأَدُقَّنَّI will surely crushسَاقَكَ.your shin.فَقَالَSo saidابْنُIbnالْمُقَفَّعِal-Muqaffa'لِلسَّائِلِ:to the beggar:

so he said: By Allah if I go out to you I will surely crush your shin. So said Ibn al-Muqaffa' to the beggar:

لَوْIfعَرَفْتَyou knewمِنْofصِدْقِthe truthfulness ofوَعِيدِهِhis threatمَاwhatأَعْرِفُI knowمِنْofصِدْقِthe truthfulness ofوَعْدِهِhis promise

If you knew of the truthfulness of his threat what I know of the truthfulness of his promise

لَمْyou would notتُرَدِّدْrepeatكَلِمَةًa wordوَلَمْand you would notتُقُمْstayطَرْفَةًthe twinkling of an eyeبِبَابِهِ.at his door.

you would not repeat a word and you would not stay the twinkling of an eye at his door.

الْمَدَائِنِيُّAl-Mada'iniعَنْfromخَالِدٍKhalidكَيْلَوَيْهِKailawaihقَالَ:said:

Al-Mada'ini from Khalid Kailawaih said:

كُنْتُI wasنَجَّاراًa carpenterحَاذِقاًskilfulفَذُهِبَso I was takenبِيtoإِلَىal-Mansurالْمَنْصُورِand heفَقَالَ:said:

I was a skilful carpenter so I was taken to al-Mansur and he said:

افْتَحْOpenلِيfor meبَاباًa doorأَنْظُرْI may lookمِنْهُthrough itإِلَىtoالْمَسْجِدِthe mosqueوَعَجِّلِand hastenالْفَرَاغَthe completionمِنْهُ.of it.

Open for me a door I may look through it to the mosque and hasten the completion of it.

قَالَ:He said:فَفَتَحْتُSo I openedالْبَابَthe doorوَعَلَّقْتُand hungعَلَيْهِupon itبَاباًa doorوَجَصَّصْتُهُand plastered it with gypsumوَفَرَغْتُand finishedمِنْهُitقَبْلَbeforeالصَّلَاةِ،the prayer,

He said: So I opened the door and hung upon it a door and plastered it with gypsum and finished it before the prayer,

فَلَمَّاso whenنُودِيَthe call was madeبِالصَّلَاةِfor prayerجَاءَhe cameفَنَظَرَand lookedإِلَيْهِat itفَأَعْجَبَهُand pleased himعَمَلِيmy workوَقَالَand saidلِي:to me:

so when the call was made for prayer he came and looked at it and pleased him my work and said to me:

أَحْسَنْتَYou have done wellبَارَكَmay blessاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْكَ!you!وَأَمَرَAnd he orderedلِيfor meبِدِرْهَمَيْنِ.two dirhams.

You have done well may bless Allah you! And he ordered for me two dirhams.

قَالَ:He said:وَقَالَAnd saidالْمَنْصُورُal-Mansurلِلْمُسَيَّبِto al-Musayyabبْنِibnزُهَيْرٍ:Zuhair:أَحْضِرْنِيBring meبَنَّاءًa builderحَاذِقاًskilfulالسَّاعَةَ.now.

He said: And said al-Mansur to al-Musayyab ibn Zuhair: Bring me a builder skilful now.
