قَالَHe said
He said:
وَقَالَAnd saidرَجُلٌa manلِعَبْدِto Abdالْمَلِكِal-Malikبْنِbinأَبْجَرَ:Abjar:
And a man said to Abd al-Malik ibn Abjar:
أَشْتَهِيI desireأَنْthatأَمْرَضَ.I fall sick.
I desire to fall sick.
فَقَالَSo he saidلَهُ:to him:
So he said to him:
كُلْEatسَمَكاًfishمَالِحاًsalted
Eat salted fish,
وَاشْرَبْand drinkنَبِيذاًwineحُلْواًsweet
and drink sweet wine,
وَاقْعُدْand sitفِيinالشَّمْسِthe sun
and sit in the sun,
وَاسْتَمْرِضِand ask for illnessاللَّهَfrom GodعَزَّAlmightyوَجَلَّand Majestic
and ask God Almighty for sickness,
فَإِنْfor ifلَمْnotتَمْرَضْyou fall sick
for if you do not fall sick,
فَأَنْتَthen you areحِمَارٌ.a donkey.
then you are a donkey.
