رُوِيَItعَنْwas narrated fromعُمَرَUmarبْنِbinحَبِيبٍHabibالْقَاضِيthe judge

It was narrated from Umar bin Habib the judge

أَنَّthatرَجُلاًa manكَانَwasبِالْبَصْرَةِin Basra

that a man was in Basra

وَكَانَتْand he hadلَهُfor himامْرَأَةٌa wifeوَلَهُand he hadمِنْهَاfrom herابْنَانِtwo sons

and he had a wife and two sons from her

فَمَاتَso he diedوَتَرَكَand leftلَهُمْfor themشَاةً،a sheep

so he died and left for them a sheep,

فَرَأَتِso sawالْمَرْأَةُthe womanفِيinالنَّوْمِthe sleep

so the woman saw in her sleep

كَأَنَّas ifأَحَدَone ofابْنَيْهَاher two sonsيَقُولُ:was saying

as if one of her two sons was saying:

يَاOأُمَّهْmotherأَمَاdo notتَرَيْنَyou seeهَذَاthisالْجَدِيَّkidقَدْhasأَفْنَىexhaustedعَلَيْنَاupon usلَبَنَmilkهَذِهِof thisالشَّاةِsheep

O mother, do you not see this kid has exhausted the milk of this sheep upon us

وَلَيْسَand there isبُدٌّno escapeمِنْfromأَنْthatأَقُومَI stand upفَأَذْبَحَهُ!and slaughter it

and there is no escape from me standing up and slaughtering it!

فَقَالَتْ:so she saidلَاdoتَفْعَلْnot doيَاOبُنَيَّ.my son

So she said: Do not do it, my son.

قَالَ:he saidلَاthere isبُدَّno escapeمِنْfromأَنْthatأَذْبَحَهُ.I slaughter it

He said: There is no escape from slaughtering it.

فَقَامَso he stood upفَذَبَحَهُand slaughtered itوَسَمَطَهُand scalded itوَشَوَاهُand roasted itوَأَخْرَجَهُand took it outمِنَfromالتَّنُّورِthe oven

So he stood up and slaughtered it, scalded it, roasted it, and took it out of the oven

فَقَعَدَso he satهُوَheوَأَخُوهُand his brotherيَأْكُلَانِ،eating

so he and his brother sat eating,

فَكَلَّمَهُthen spoke to himأَخُوهُhis brotherبِشَيْءٍ،about something

then his brother spoke to him about something,

فَأَخَذَso he tookالسِّكِّينَthe knifeفَشَقَّand slitبَطْنَهُ،his belly

so he took the knife and slit his belly,

فَانْتَبَهَتْthen she awokeفَزِعَةًfrightened

then she awoke frightened

وَإِذَاand beholdابْنُهَاher sonيَقُولُ:was saying

and behold, her son was saying:

يَاOأُمَّهْmotherأَمَاdo notتَرَيْنَyou seeهَذَاthisالْجَدِيَّkidقَدْhasأَفْنَىexhaustedعَلَيْنَاupon usلَبَنَmilkهَذِهِof thisالشَّاةِsheep

O mother, do you not see this kid has exhausted the milk of this sheep upon us

أَقُومُI stand upفَأَذْبَحَهُ؟and slaughter it?

shall I stand up and slaughter it?

فَقَالَتْ:so she saidلَاdoتَفْعَلْnot doيَاOبُنَيَّ.my son

So she said: Do not do it, my son.

فَجَعَلَتْso she beganتَتَعَجَّبُto marvelمِنْatتَصْدِيقِthe coming true ofالرُّؤْيَاthe vision

So she began to marvel at the coming true of the vision

فَأَخَذَتْso she tookبِيَدِby the hand ofأَخِيهِhis brother

and took his brother by the hand

فَدَخَلَتْand she enteredبَيْتاًa houseوَأَغْلَقَتِand she closedالْبَابَthe doorمِنْfromدَاخِلٍ،inside

and entered a house and closed the door from inside,

فَبَيْنَاso whileهِيَsheمُفَكِّرَةٌwas thinkingمُغْتَمَّةٌand grieved

so while she was thinking and grieved

إِذْsuddenlyغَفَتْshe dozed off

suddenly she dozed off

فَرَأَتِand she sawالنَّبِيَّ،the Prophetصَلَّىpeaceاللَّهُbeعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and blessings

and saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,

فَقَالَ:so he saidمَاwhatشَأْنُكِ؟is your matter?

so he said: What is your matter?

فَخَبَرَتْهُso she informed himالْخَبَرَ.of the news

So she informed him of the news.

فَنَادَى:then he calledيَاOرُؤْيَا!Vision!

Then he called: O Vision!

فَإِذَاsuddenlyالْحَائِطُthe wallقَدِhasانْصَدَعَsplit openوَخَرَجَتْand out cameامْرَأَةٌa womanجَمِيلَةٌbeautifulبَارِعَةُsurpassing inالْجَمَالِ.beauty

Suddenly the wall split open and out came a beautiful woman, surpassing in beauty.

فَقَالَso saidلَهَاto herالنَّبِيُّ،the Prophetصَلَّىpeaceاللَّهُbeعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and blessingsمَاwhatأَرَدْتِdid you intendإِلَىtowardهَذِهِthisالْمِسْكِينَةِ؟poor woman?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to her: What did you intend toward this poor woman?

قَالَتْ:she saidلَاnoوَالَّذِيand by the One whoبَعَثَكَsent youبِالْحَقِّwith the truthنَبِيّاًas a prophetمَاI did notأَتَيْتُهَاcome to herفِيinمَنَامِهَا!her sleep!

She said: No, and by the One who sent you with the truth as a prophet, I did not come to her in her sleep!

فَنَادَى:then he calledيَاOأَضْغَاثَconfusedأَحْلَامٍ!dreams!

Then he called: O confused dreams!

فَخَرَجَتْso out cameامْرَأَةٌa womanدُونَهَا.lower than her

So out came a woman inferior to her.

فَقَالَ:he saidمَاwhatأَرَدْتِdid you intendإِلَىtowardهَذِهِthisالْمِسْكِينَةِ؟poor woman?

He said: What did you intend toward this poor woman?

قَالَتْ:she saidرَأَيْتُهُمْI saw themبِخَيْرٍin well-beingفَحَسَدْتُهُمْso I envied themفَأَرَدْتُand I wantedأَنْtoأَغُمَّهُمْ.grieve them

She said: I saw them in well-being so I envied them and wanted to grieve them.

فَقَالَ،so saidصَلَّىpeaceاللَّهُbeعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and blessingsلَيْسَthere isعَلَيْكَupon youبَأْسٌ.any harm

So peace and blessings be upon him said: No harm shall come to you.

فَانْتَبَهَتْso she awokeوَأَكَلَتْand ateمَعَwithابْنَيْهَاher two sonsوَلَمْand they did notيَزَالُواcease to beبِخَيْرٍ.1in well-being

So she awoke and ate with her two sons, and they remained in well-being.

قَالَ:he saidنَظَرَlookedإِيَاسُIyasبْنُbinمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahإِلَىatنِسْوَةٍsome womenقَدْwho hadفَزِعْنَbeen frightenedمِنْbyبَعِيرٍa camel

He said: Iyas bin Muawiyah looked at some women who had been frightened by a camel

فَأَشَارَso he pointedإِلَيْهِنَّto themفَقَالَ:and saidهَذِهِthis oneبِكْرٌis a virginوَهَذِهِand this oneحَامِلٌis pregnantوَهَذِهِand this oneمُرْضِعٌ.is a nursing mother

and pointed to them, saying: This one is a virgin, this one is pregnant, and this one is a nursing mother.

فَقَامَso stood upإِلَيْهِنَّtoward themرَجُلٌa manفَسَأَلَهُنَّand asked themفَكُنَّand they wereكَمَاasقَالَ.he said

So a man went to them and asked them, and they were as he had said.

فَقِيلَso it was saidلَهُ:to himكَيْفَhowعَلِمْتَهُ؟did you know it?

So it was said to him: How did you know this?

قَالَ:he saidرَأَيْتُهُنَّI saw themلَمَّاwhenفَزِعْنَthey were frightenedوَضَعَتْplacedكُلُّeachوَاحِدَةٍoneمِنْهُنَّof themيَدَهَاher handعَلَىonأَهَمِّthe most importantالْمَوَاضِعِplaceإِلَيْهَا،to her

He said: When they were frightened, I saw each one of them place her hand on the place most important to her,

فَوَضَعَتِso placedالْحَامِلُthe pregnant womanيَدَهَاher handعَلَىonبَطْنِهَا،her belly

so the pregnant woman placed her hand on her belly,

وَوَضَعَتِand placedالْمُرْضِعُthe nursing motherيَدَهَاher handعَلَىonثَدْيِهَا،her breast

and the nursing mother placed her hand on her breast,

وَوَضَعَتِand placedالْبِكْرُthe virginيَدَهَاher handعَلَىonقُبُلِهَا.her private part

and the virgin placed her hand on her private part.

قَالَ:he saidوَنَظَرَand lookedإِيَاسٌIyasيَوْماًone dayإِلَىatرَجُلٍa manمُتَأَبِّطٍtucking under his armشَيْئاًsomethingفَقَالَ:and said

He said: One day Iyas looked at a man tucking something under his arm and said:

مَعَهُwith him isسُكَّرٌsugarوَقَدْand there hasوُلِدَbeen bornلَهُto himغُلَامٌ.a boy

He has sugar with him, and a boy has been born to him.

فَاتَّبَعَهُso he followed himالرَّجُلُthe manفَسَأَلَهُand asked himفَإِذَاand beholdهُوَheكَمَاwas asقَالَ.he said

So the man followed him and asked him, and behold, he was as he said.

فَقِيلَso it was askedلَهُto himفِيaboutذَلِكَ،thatفَقَالَ:and he said

So he was asked about that, and he said:

رَأَيْتُI sawالذِّبَابَthe fliesقَدْhaveأَطَافَتْhoveredبِهِaround himفَقُلْتُso I saidمَعَهُhe hasحَلَاوَةٌsweetnessوَهُوَand it isسُكَّرٌ،sugar

I saw the flies hovering around him, so I said he has sweetness and it is sugar,

وَرَأَيْتُهُand I saw himنَشِيطاًenergeticفَقُلْتُso I saidوُلِدَwas bornلَهُto himغُلَامٌ.2a boy

and I saw him energetic, so I said a boy was born to him.

قَالَ:he saidوَاسْتَقْبَلَand metإِيَاسٌIyasرَجُلاًa manفَقَالَ:and saidخُذُوهُseize himفَإِنَّهُfor indeed heسَرَقَstoleوَسَيَأْتِيand will comeمَنْsomeone whoيَطْلُبُهُ.will seek him

He said: Iyas met a man and said: Seize him, for indeed he has stolen and someone will come seeking him.

فَأَخَذُوهُso they seized himفَلَمْand it was notيَتَجَاوَزْmore thanسَاعَةًan hourحَتَّىuntilجَاءَcameقَوْمٌpeopleيَطْلُبُونَهُseeking himفَأَخَذُوهُand they took him

So they seized him, and no more than an hour passed until people came seeking him and took him.

فَقِيلَso it was askedلَهُto himفِيaboutذَلِكَ،thatفَقَالَ:and he said

So he was asked about that, and he said:

رَأَيْتُهُI saw himيَرْعَدُtremblingوَيَعْدُوand runningمَدْلَهَاًbewilderedمُتَغَيِّرَwith changedاللَّوْنِcolorيُكْثِرُfrequentlyالِاسْتِفَاتَlooking aroundفَزَكَنْتُso I deducedفِيهِfrom himهَذَاthisوَأَنَّهُand that heلِصٌّ.was a thief

I saw him trembling, running, bewildered, with a changed color, frequently looking around, so I deduced from this that he was a thief.

قَالَ:he saidوَرَأَىand he sawرَجُلاًa manعَلَىonعَاتِقِهِhis shoulderجَرَّةُa jar ofعَسَلٍhoneyفَقَالَ:and saidفِيهَاin it isسُمٌّpoisonأَوْorحَيَّةٌ.a snake

He said: And he saw a man on whose shoulder was a jar of honey, and said: In it is poison or a snake.

فَنَظَرُواso they lookedفَإِذَاand beholdحَيَّةٌ،a snake

So they looked, and behold, it was a snake.

فَسُئِلَso he was askedعَنْaboutذَلِكَthatفَقَالَ:and he saidرَأَيْتُI sawالذِّبَابَthe fliesتَحُومُhoveringحَوْلَهُaround itوَلَاand notتَسْقُطُfallingعَلَيْهِupon itفَعَلِمْتُso I knewأَنَّهُthat itحَيَّةٌwas a snakeأَوْorسُمٌّ.3poison

So he was asked about that and said: I saw the flies hovering around it and not landing on it, so I knew that it was a snake or poison.

حَدَّثَنَاnarrated to usالْحَسَنُAl-HasanبْنُbinوَهْبٍWahbقَالَ:who saidحَدَّثَنِيnarrated to meصَالِحُSalihبْنُbinعَلِيِّAliبْنِbinعَطِيَّةَAtiyyahقَالَ:who said

Al-Hasan bin Wahb narrated to us, saying: Salih bin Ali bin Atiyyah narrated to me, saying:

كَانَwasالْمَنْصُورُAl-MansurأَلْزَمَobligatedخَالِدَKhalidبْنَbinبَرْمَكٍBarmakثَلَاثَةَthreeآلَافِthousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhams

Al-Mansur had obligated Khalid bin Barmak to pay three thousand thousand dirhams

وَنَذَرَand vowedدَمَهُhis bloodفِيهَاregarding itوَأَجَّلَهُand gave him a term ofثَلَاثَةَthreeأَيَّامٍ.days

and vowed to shed his blood over it, and granted him a term of three days.

فَقَالَso saidخَالِدٌKhalidلِيَحْيَىto Yahyaابْنِهِ:his sonإِنِّيindeed Iقَدْhaveطُولِبْتُbeen demandedبِمَاfor whatلَيْسَis notعِنْدِيwith me

Khalid said to his son Yahya: Indeed, I have been demanded to pay what I do not have

وَإِنَّمَاand onlyيُرَادُis desiredبِذَلِكَtherebyدَمِيmy blood

and only my blood is desired thereby.

فَانْصَرِفْso returnإِلَىtoحُرْمَتِكَyour womenfolkوَأَهْلِكَand your familyفَمَاand whateverكُنْتَyou wereفَاعِلاًdoingبَعْدَafterمَوْتِيmy deathفَافْعَلْهُ،do it

So return to your womenfolk and family, and whatever you would be doing after my death, do it,

ثُمَّthenقَالَ:he saidيَاOبُنَيَّmy sonوَلَاand do notيَمْنَعَنَّكَprevent youذَلِكَthatمِنْfromأَنْthatتَلْقَىyou meetإِخْوَانَنَاour brothersفَتُعْلِمَهُمْand inform themحَالَنَا.of our state

then he said: O my son, let not that prevent you from meeting our brothers and informing them of our state.

قَالَsaidيَحْيَى:Yahyaفَأَتَيْتُso I came toإِخْوَانَthe brothers ofوَالِدِيmy father

Yahya said: So I came to my father's brothers

فَمِنْهُمْand among themمَنْwere those whoجَبَهَنِيmet me bluntlyبِالرَّدِّwith refusalثُمَّthenبَعَثَsentإِلَيَّto meبِمَالٍwith wealthجَلِيلٍ،great

and among them were those who met me with blunt refusal, then sent great wealth to me,

وَمِنْهُمْand among themمَنْwere those whoلَمْdid notيَأْذَنْgive permissionلِيfor meوَبَعَثَand sentبِمَالٍwealthفِيinأَثَرِيmy footstepsلِكَيْلَاso thatيُخْبَرَit might not be reportedبِهِtoالْمَنْصُورُ.Al-Mansur

and among them were those who did not give me permission to enter and sent wealth after me so that Al-Mansur would not be informed of it.

قَالَ:he saidفَدَخَلْتُso I enteredعَلَىuponعُمَارَةَUmarahبْنِbinحَمْزَةَHamzah

He said: So I entered upon Umarah bin Hamzah

وَهُوَwhile heمُقَابِلٌwas facingبِوَجْهِهِwith his faceإِلَىtowardالْحَائِطِthe wall

while he was facing the wall with his face

فَسَلَّمْتُso I greetedفَرَدَّand he returnedرَدّاًa greetingضَعِيفاً.weak

and I gave the greeting, and he returned a weak greeting.

قَالَsaidيَحْيَى:Yahyaفَضَاقَتْso narrowedبِيupon meالْأَرْضُ،the earth

Yahya said: So the earth narrowed upon me,

ثُمَّthenكَلَمْتُهُI spoke to himفِيمَاconcerning whatكُنْتُI wasأَتَيْتُهُcoming to himفِيهِ.for

then I spoke to him regarding what I had come to him for.

فَقَالَ:so he saidإِنْifأَمْكَنَنَاit is possible for usشَيْءٌsomethingفَسَيَأْتِيكَ.it will come to you

He said: If something is possible for us, it will come to you.

فَانْصَرَفْتُso I departedعَنْهُfrom himوَصِرْتُand wentإِلَىtoأَبِيmy fatherفَأَعْلَمْتُهُand informed himذَلِكَof that

So I departed from him and went to my father and informed him of that

وَقُلْتُ:and saidأَرَاكَI see youتَثِقُtrustingمِنْinعُمَارَةَUmarahبِمَاwith whatلَاis notيُوثَقُtrustedبِهِ.in

and said: I see you trusting in Umarah with what cannot be trusted.

فَوَاللَّهِfor by Allahإِنِّيindeed Iلَفِيwas inذَلِكَthatالْحَدِيثِconversationإِذْwhenطَلَعَappearedعَلَيْنَاupon usرَسُولُthe messenger ofعُمَارَةَUmarahبِمِئَةِwith one hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhams

By Allah, while I was in that conversation, the messenger of Umarah appeared upon us with one hundred thousand dirhams

وَرَسُولُand the messenger ofصَاحِبِthe master ofالْمُصَلَّىAl-Musallaبِمِئَةِwith one hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhams

and the messenger of the master of Al-Musalla with one hundred thousand dirhams

وَرَسُولُand the messenger ofمُبَارَكٍMubarakالتُّرْكِيِّthe Turkبِمِئَتَيْwith two hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.

and the messenger of Mubarak the Turk with two hundred thousand dirhams.

فَجَمَعْنَاso we gatheredفِيinيَوْمَيْنِtwo daysأَلْفَيْtwo thousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsوَسَبْعِand sevenمِئَةِhundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhams

So we gathered in two days two thousand seven hundred thousand dirhams

وَبَقِيَتْand remainedثَلَاثُthreeمِئَةِhundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhamsفَتَعَذَّرَso it became difficultذَلِكَ.that

and three hundred thousand dirhams remained, and that became difficult to obtain.

قَالَsaidيَحْيَى:Yahyaفَوَاللَّهِso by Allahإِنِّيindeed Iلَمَارٌّwas passingبِالْجِسْرِby the bridgeمَهْمُوماًworriedمَغْمُوماًgrieved

Yahya said: By Allah, while I was passing by the bridge, worried and grieved,

إِذْsuddenlyوَثَبَleapedإِلَيَّtoward meزَاجِرٌan omen interpreterفَقَالَ:and saidفَرَّخَthe bird has hatchedالطَّيْرُits youngقِفْstopأُخْبِرْكَ!let me inform you

suddenly an omen interpreter leaped toward me and said: The bird has hatched its young, stop and let me inform you!

فَطَوَيْتُهُso I bypassed himوَلَمْand did notأَلْتَفِتْturnإِلَيْهِ،to him

So I bypassed him and did not turn to him,

فَلَحَقَنِيso he overtook meوَتَعَلَّقَand held onبِي.to me

so he overtook me and held on to me.

فَقُلْتُ:so I saidوَيْحَكَwoe to youاذْهَبْgo awayعَنِّيfrom meفَإِنِّيfor indeed Iمَشْغُولٌam occupiedعَنْكَ!away from you

So I said: Woe to you, go away from me for indeed I am occupied away from you!

فَقَالَ:so he saidأَنْتَyouوَاللَّهِby Allahمَهْمُومٌare worriedوَوَاللَّهِand by Allahلَيُفْرَجَنَّwill surely be relievedهَمُّكَyour worryوَتُمُنَّand you will be grantedبِاللِّوَاءِthe bannerغَداًtomorrowفِيinهَذَاthisالْمَوْضِعِplaceبَيْنَbetweenيَدَيْكَ.your hands

So he said: You, by Allah, are worried, and by Allah, your worry will surely be relieved, and you will be granted the banner tomorrow in this place before you.

فَأَقْبَلْتُso I beganأَعْجَبُto marvelمِنْatقَوْلِهِ.his saying

So I began to marvel at his saying.

فَقَالَso he saidلِي:to meإِنْifكَانَthat happensذَلِكَitفَلِيthen for meعَلَيْكَfrom youخَمْسَةُfiveآلَافِthousandدِرْهَمٍ!dirhams

So he said to me: If that happens, then I am owed five thousand dirhams by you!

قُلْتُ:I saidنَعَمْ.yes

I said: Yes.

وَلَوْand even ifقَالَhe had saidخَمْسِينَfiftyأَلْفَthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsلَقُلْتُI would have saidنَعَمْyesلِبُعْدِdue to the remotenessذَلِكَof thatعَنِّي.from me

And even if he had said fifty thousand dirhams, I would have said yes, due to the remoteness of that from me.
