فَلَمَّاSo whenكَانَit wasأَيَّامُthe daysالرِّدَّةِof apostasy

So when it was the days of apostasy

بَعَثَsentأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍBakrرَحْمَةُmay the mercyاللَّهِof Godعَلَيْهِbe upon him

Abu Bakr, may the mercy of God be upon him, sent

خَالِدَKhalidبْنَson ofالْوَلِيدِAl-Walidإِلَيْهِto him

Khalid son of Al-Walid to him

فَلَمَّاso whenانْتَهَىhe reachedإِلَىhisعَسْكَرِهِcamp

so when he reached his camp

وَجَدَهُhe found himقَدْhavingضُرِبَتْbeen set upلَهُfor himقُبَّةٌa dome tentمِنْofأُدْمٍleather

he found that a leather dome tent had been set up for him

وَأَصْحَابُهُand his companionsحَوْلَهُaround him

and his companions were around him

فَقَالَso he said

so he said

لِيَخْرُجْlet come outإِلَيَّto meطُلَيْحَةُTulayhah

Let Tulayhah come out to me!

فَقَالُواso they saidلَاdo notتُصَغِّرْbelittleنَبِيًّاa prophet

So they said: Do not belittle a prophet

هُوَhe isطَلْحَةُTalhah

he is Talhah

فَخَرَجَso he came outإِلَيْهِto him

So he came out to him

فَقَالَand saidخَالِدٌKhalid

and Khalid said

إِنَّindeedمِنْfromعَهْدِthe covenant ofخَلِيفَتِنَاour caliph

Indeed, among the covenant of our caliph

أَنْis thatيَدْعُوَكَhe calls youإِلَىtoاللَّهِGodوَحْدَهُaloneلَاnoشَرِيكَpartnerلَهُfor Him

is that he invites you to God alone, with no partner for Him

وَأَنَّand thatمُحَمَّدًاMuhammadعَبْدُهُis His servantوَرَسُولُهُand His messenger

and that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger

فَقَالَso he said

So he said

يَاOخَالِدُKhalidاشْهَدْbear witnessأَنْthatلَاthere is noإِلَهَgodإِلَّاexceptاللَّهُGod

O Khalid, bear witness that there is no god except God

وَأَنِّيand that Iرَسُولُam the messengerاللَّهِof God

and that I am the messenger of God

فَلَمَّاso whenسَمِعَheardخَالِدٌKhalidذَلِكَthat

So when Khalid heard that

انْصَرَفَhe turned awayعَنْهُfrom him

he turned away from him

وَعَسْكَرُهُand his campبِالْقُرْبِwas nearمِنْهُhimعَلَىatمِيلٍa mile

while his camp was near him at a distance of a mile

فَقَالَso saidعُيَيْنَةُUyaynahبْنُson ofحِصْنٍHisnلِطُلَيْحَةَto Tulayhah

Uyaynah son of Hisn said to Tulayhah

لَاmayأَبَاfatherلَكَto you not be

Woe to you!

هَلْareأَنْتَyouمُرِينَاshowing usبَعْضَsome ofنُبُوَّتِكَyour prophethood

Will you show us some of your prophethood?

قَالَhe saidنَعَمْyes

He said: Yes.

وَكَانَand he hadقَدْalreadyبَعَثَsentعُيُونًاspiesلَهُfor himself

And he had already sent spies for himself

حِينَwhenسَارَset outخَالِدٌKhalidمِنَfromالْمَدِينَةِMadinahمُقْبِلًاcomingإِلَيْهِمْtowards them

when Khalid set out from Madinah coming towards them

فَعَرَّفُوهُso they informed him ofخَبَرَthe news ofخَالِدٍKhalid

and they informed him of the news of Khalid

فَقَالَso he said

So he said

لَئِنْifبَعَثْتُمْyou sendفَارِسَيْنِtwo horsemenعَلَىonفَرَسَيْنِtwo horsesأَغَرَّيْنِhaving white blazesمُحَجَّلَيْنِhaving white markings on their legsمِنْfromبَنِيBanuنَصْرِNasrبْنِson ofقُعَيْنٍQu'ayn

If you send two horsemen upon two blaze-faced and white-legged horses from Banu Nasr bin Qu'ayn

أَتَوْكُمْthey will come to youمِنَfromالْقَوْمِthe peopleبِعَيْنٍwith certainty

they will bring you certain news from the people

فَهَيَّأُواso they preparedفَارِسَيْنِtwo horsemenفَبَعَثُوهُمَاand sent them

So they prepared two horsemen and sent them forth

فَخَرَجَاand they went outيَرْكُضَانِriding fast

and they set out riding fast

فَلَقِيَاand they metعَيْنًاa spyلِخَالِدٍfor Khalidمُقْبِلًاcomingإِلَيْهِمْtowards them

and they met a spy of Khalid coming towards them

فَقَالَاso they saidمَاwhat isخَبَرُthe news ofخَالِدٍKhalid

So they said: What is the news of Khalid?

أَوْorقَالَاthey saidمَاwhatوَرَاءَكَis behind you

Or they said: What news do you bring?

قَالَhe saidهَذَاthis isخَالِدُKhalidبْنُson ofالْوَلِيدِAl-Walid

He said: This is Khalid bin Al-Walid

فِيamongالْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsقَدْhasأَقْبَلَapproached

with the Muslims, he has approached

فَزَادَهُمْand it increased them inفِتْنَةًtrial

and that increased them in trial

وَقَالَand he said

And he said

أَلَمْdid I notأَقُلْsayلَكُمْto you

Did I not tell you?

فَلَمَّاso whenكَانَit wasفِيinالسَّحَرِthe predawn time

So when it was the predawn time

نَهَضَroseخَالِدٌKhalidإِلَىtowardsطُلَيْحَةَTulayhah

Khalid set out towards Tulayhah

فِيمَنْwith those whoمَعَهُwere with himمِنْfromأَصْحَابِcompanionsرَسُولِof the Messengerاللَّهِof Godصَلَّىmay God's blessingsاللَّهُbeعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

with those who were with him from the companions of the Messenger of God, may God's blessings be upon him and grant him peace

فَلَمَّاso whenالْتَقَىmetالصَّفَّانِthe two ranks

So when the two ranks met

تَزَمَّلَwrapped himselfطُلَيْحَةُTulayhahفِيinكِسَاءٍa cloakلَهُof his

Tulayhah wrapped himself in a cloak of his

يَنْتَظِرُwaiting forزَعْمَwhat he claimed wasالْوَحْيِrevelation

waiting for what he claimed was revelation

فَلَمَّاso whenطَالَgrew longذَلِكَthatعَلَىforأَصْحَابِهِhis companions

So when that took too long for his companions

وَأَلَحَّand pressed hardعَلَيْهِمُupon themالْمُسْلِمُونَthe Muslimsبِالسَّيْفِwith the sword

and the Muslims pressed hard upon them with the sword

فَقَالَsaidعُيَيْنَةُUyaynahبْنُson ofحِصْنٍHisn

Uyaynah son of Hisn said

هَلْhasأَتَاكَcome to youبَعْدُyet

Has [revelation] come to you yet?

قَالَsaidطُلَيْحَةُTulayhahمِنْfromتَحْتِunderالْكِسَاءِthe cloak

Tulayhah said from under the cloak

لَاnoوَاللَّهِby Godمَاhas notجَاءَcomeبَعْدُyet

No, by God, it has not come yet!

فَقَالَso saidعُيَيْنَةُUyaynah

So Uyaynah said

تَبًّاruinلَكَbe to youآخِرَat the end ofالدَّهْرِtime

Ruin be to you for the rest of time!

ثُمَّthenجَذَبَهُhe yanked himجَذْبَةًa yankingجَاشَwhich agitatedمِنْهَاhim from it

Then he gave him a violent yank that agitated him

وَقَالَand said

and said

قَبَحَmay God make uglyاللَّهُGodهَذِهِthisمِنْas aنُبُوَّةٍprophethood

May God make this ugly as a prophethood!

فَجَلَسَso satطُلَيْحَةُTulayhah

So Tulayhah sat up

فَقَالَso saidلَهُto himعُيَيْنَةُUyaynah

and Uyaynah said to him

مَاwhatقِيلَwas saidلَكَto you

What was said to you?

قَالَhe said

He said

قِيلَit was saidلِيto me

It was said to me

إِنَّindeedلَكَyou haveرَحًىa millstoneكَرَحَاهُlike His millstone

Indeed, you have a millstone like His millstone

وَأَمْرًاand a matterلَاyou will notتَنْسَاهُforget it

and a matter you will not forget

فَقَالَso saidعُيَيْنَةُUyaynah

So Uyaynah said

قَدْindeedعَلِمَknewاللَّهُGodعَزَّMightyوَجَلَّand Majestic

God, Mighty and Majestic, has known

أَنْthatسَيَكُونُthere will beلَكَfor youأَمْرٌa matterلَاyou will notتَنْسَاهُforget it

that there will be for you a matter you will not forget

هَذَاthis oneكَذَّابٌis a liar

This man is a liar!

مَاnotبُورِكَwas blessedلَنَاfor usوَلَاnorلَهُfor himفِيمَاin whatيُطَالِبُhe seeks

Neither for us nor for him has there been any blessing in what he seeks.

ثُمَّthenهَرَبَfledعُيَيْنَةُUyaynahوَأَخُوهُand his brother

Then Uyaynah and his brother fled

فَأَدْرَكُوهُso they overtook himوَأَسَرُوهُand captured him

and they overtook him and captured him

وَأَفْلَتَand escapedأَخُوهُhis brother

while his brother escaped

وَخَرَجَand went outطُلَيْحَةُTulayhahمُنْهَزِمًاdefeated

And Tulayhah went out defeated

وَأَسْلَمَهُand abandoned himشَيْطَانُهُhis devil

and his devil abandoned him

حَتَّىuntilقَدِمَhe arrived inالشَّامَAl-Sham

until he arrived in Al-Sham

فَأَقَامَand stayedعِنْدَwithبَنِيBanuجَفْنَةَJafnahالْغَسَانِيِّينَthe Ghassanids

and stayed with Banu Jafnah, the Ghassanids

حَتَّىuntilفَتَحَconqueredاللَّهُGodعَزَّMightyوَجَلَّand MajesticأَجْنَادِينَAjnadayn

until God, Mighty and Majestic, conquered Ajnadayn

وَتُوُفِّيَand passed awayأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍBakr

and Abu Bakr passed away

وَأَسْلَمَand embraced IslamطُلَيْحَةُTulayhahإِسْلَامًاan Islamصَحِيحًاtrue

and Tulayhah embraced Islam with a true Islam

وَقَالَand he said

and he said

وَإِنِّيand indeed Iمِنْafterبَعْدِtheضَلَالَةٍmisguidanceشَاهِدٌam a witness......شَهَادَةَto a testimonyحَقٍّof truthلَسْتُin which I am notفِيهَاin itبِمُلْحِدِa deviant

And indeed I, after misguidance, am a witness ... to a testimony of truth in which I am not a deviant.

وَمِنْهُمْAnd among themمَنْis he whoتَنَبَّاclaimed prophethoodبَعْدُlaterفِيinأَيَّامِthe days ofالرَّشِيدِAl-Rashid

And among them is one who claimed prophethood later in the days of Al-Rashid

رَجُلٌa manزَعَمَwho claimedأَنَّهُthat heنُوحٌwas Noah

a man who claimed that he was Noah

فَقِيلَso it was saidلَهُto him

So it was said to him

أَأَنْتَAre youنُوحٌNoahالَّذِيwhoكَانَwasأَمْorنُوحٌNoahآخَرُanother

Are you Noah who was, or another Noah?

قَالَhe said

He said

أَنَاI amنُوحٌNoahالَّذِيwhoلَبِثَremainedفِيamongقَوْمِهِhis people

I am Noah who remained among his people

أَلْفَa thousandسَنَةٍyearsإِلَّاexceptخَمْسِينَfiftyعَامًاyears

a thousand years except fifty years

وَقَدْand I haveبُعِثْتُbeen sentإِلَيْكُمْto you

and I have been sent to you

لِأُفِيَto fulfillالْخَمْسِينَthe fiftyعَامًاyearsتَمَامَcompletingأَلْفِa thousandالسَّنَةِyears

to fulfill the fifty years, completing the thousand years.

فَأَمَرَso orderedالرَّشِيدُAl-Rashidبِضَرْبِهِthat he be beatenوَصَلْبِهِand crucified

So Al-Rashid ordered that he be beaten and crucified.

فَمَرَّthen passedبِهِby himبَعْضُsomeالْمُخَنَّثِينَeffeminate men

Then one of the effeminate men passed by him

وَهُوَwhile heمَصْلُوبٌwas crucified

while he was crucified

فَقَالَand said

and said

صَلَّىmay God's blessings beاللَّهُuponعَلَيْكَyouيَاOأَبَانَاour father

May God's blessings be upon you, O our father!

مَاwhatحَصَلَhas remainedفِيinيَدِكَyour handمِنْofسَفِينَتِكَyour ship

What has remained in your hand from your ship

إِلَّاexceptدَقَلُهَاits mast

except its mast!

وَهُوَand itالَّذِيwhichيَكُونُisفِيinوَسَطِthe middle ofالسَّفِينَةِthe ship

and it is what is in the middle of the ship

كَجِذْعٍlike a trunkطَوِيلٍlong

like a long trunk.

وَمِنْهُمْAnd among themرَجُلٌis a manتَنَبَّاwho claimed prophethoodفِيinأَيَّامِthe days ofالْمَأْمُونِAl-Ma'mun

And among them is a man who claimed prophethood in the days of Al-Ma'mun

فَقَالَso he saidلِلْحَاجِبِto the chamberlain

and he said to the chamberlain

أَبْلِغْconvey toأَمِيرَthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful

Convey to the Commander of the Faithful

أَنَّthatنَبِيَّthe prophetاللَّهِof Godبِالْبَابِis at the door

that the prophet of God is at the door.

فَأَذِنَso he permittedلَهُhim

So he permitted him [to enter]

فَقَالَand saidثُمَامَةُThumamah

and Thumamah said

مَاwhat isدَلِيلُthe proof ofنُبُوَّتِكَyour prophethood

What is the proof of your prophethood?

قَالَhe said

He said

تُحْضِرُyou bringلِيto meأُمَّكَyour mother

You bring my mother to me

فَأُوَاقِعُهَاso I have relations with her

so I have relations with her

فَتَحْمِلُand she conceivesمِنْfromسَاعَتِهَاthat very hour

and she conceives from that very hour

وَتَأْتِيand she brings forthبِغُلَامٍa boyمِثْلِكَlike you

and brings forth a boy like you.

فَقَالَso saidثُمَامَةُThumamah

So Thumamah said

صَلَّىmay God's blessings beاللَّهُuponعَلَيْكَyouأَيُّهَاOالنَّبِيُّprophet

May God's blessings be upon you, O prophet

وَرَحْمَةُand the mercy ofاللَّهِGodوَبَرَكَاتُهُand His blessings

and the mercy of God and His blessings!

أَهْوَنُeasierعَلَيَّfor me isمِنْthanإِحْضَارِكَyour bringingأُمِّيmy motherوَمُوَاقَعَتِهَا1and having relations with her

It is easier for me than your bringing my mother and having relations with her!

مَحَاسِنُThe virtues ofأَبِيAbuبَكْرٍ2Bakr

[1] The Virtues of Abu Bakr

رِضْوَانُThe pleasure ofاللَّهِGodوَرَحْمَتُهُand His mercyعَلَيْهِbe upon him

[2] The pleasure of God and His mercy be upon him

رُوِيَIt was narratedعَنْfromابْنِIbnعُمَرَUmar

It was narrated from Ibn Umar

رَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُمَاthem both

may God be pleased with them both

قَالَwho said

who said

دَخَلَenteredرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِof God

The Messenger of God entered

صَلَّىmay God's blessings beاللَّهُuponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

may God's blessings be upon him and grant him peace

الْمَسْجِدَthe mosque

the mosque

وَأَبُوwhile AbuبَكْرٍBakrعَنْwas atيَمِينِهِhis right

while Abu Bakr was at his right

وَعُمَرُand Umarعَنْwas atشِمَالِهِhis left

and Umar was at his left

فَقَالَand he said

and he said

هَكَذَاthusنُبْعَثُwe are resurrectedيَوْمَon the Dayالْقِيَامَةِof Resurrection

Thus we are resurrected on the Day of Resurrection.

وَقَالَAnd he said

And he said

صَلَّىmay God's blessings beاللَّهُuponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

may God's blessings be upon him and grant him peace

إِنَّindeedاللَّهَGodتَبَارَكَBlessedوَتَعَالَىand Exalted

Indeed, God, Blessed and Exalted

أَيَّدَنِيsupported meمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofالسَّمَاءِthe heavens

supported me from the people of the heavens

بِجِبْرِيلَwith Jibrilوَمِيكَائِيلَand Mika'il

with Jibril and Mika'il

وَمِنْand fromأَهْلِthe people ofالْأَرْضِthe earth

and from the people of the earth

بِأَبِيwith AbuبَكْرٍBakrوَعُمَرَand Umar

with Abu Bakr and Umar.

وَرَآهُمَاAnd he saw themمُقْبِلَيْنِapproaching

And he saw them approaching

فَقَالَand said

and said

هَذَانِthese two areالسَّمْعُthe hearingوَالْبَصَرُand the sight

These two are the hearing and the sight.

وَرُوِيَAnd it was narratedعَنْfromابْنِIbnعُمَرَUmar

And it was narrated from Ibn Umar

رَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُمَاthem both

may God be pleased with them both

أَنَّهُthat heقَالَsaid

that he said

لَوْifوُزِنَwere weighedإِيمَانُthe faith ofأَبِيAbuبَكْرٍBakr

If the faith of Abu Bakr were weighed

بِإِيمَانِagainst the faith ofأَهْلِthe people ofالْأَرْضِthe earth

against the faith of the people of the earth

لَرَجَحَit would outweighبِهِمْthem

it would outweigh them.

وَرُوِيَAnd it was narratedعَنْfromعُمَرَUmar

And it was narrated from Umar

رَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُhim

may God be pleased with him

أَنَّهُthat heقَالَsaid

that he said

أَمَرَorderedرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِof God

The Messenger of God ordered

صَلَّىmay God's blessings beاللَّهُuponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

may God's blessings be upon him and grant him peace

بِالصَّدَقَةِcharity

charity

وَوَافَقَand that coincided withذَلِكَthatمَالًاwealthعِنْدِيI had

and that coincided with some wealth I had

فَقُلْتُso I saidالْيَوْمَtodayأَسْبِقُI will surpassأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍBakr

so I said: Today I will surpass Abu Bakr

إِنْifسَبَقْتُهُI can surpass him

if I can surpass him

فَجِئْتُهُso I came to him withبِنِصْفِhalf ofمَالِيmy wealth

and I brought him half of my wealth.

فَقَالَso saidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِof God

So the Messenger of God said

صَلَّىmay God's blessings beاللَّهُuponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

may God's blessings be upon him and grant him peace

مَاwhatأَبْقَيْتَdid you leaveلِأَهْلِكَfor your family

What have you left for your family?

قُلْتُI saidالنِّصْفَHalf

I said: Half.

وَجَاءَAnd cameأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍBakrبِكُلِّwith allمَالِهِof his wealth

And Abu Bakr came with all of his wealth.

فَقَالَso saidلَهُto himالنَّبِيُّthe Prophetصَلَّىmay God's blessings beاللَّهُuponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

So the Prophet, may God's blessings be upon him and grant him peace, said to him

مَاwhatأَبْقَيْتَdid you leaveلِأَهْلِكَfor your family

What have you left for your family?

قَالَHe saidاللَّهَGodحَقًّاtrulyوَرَسُولَهُand His messenger

He said: God and His messenger, truly.

فَقُلْتُSo I saidوَاللَّهِBy GodلَاI will neverأُسْبِقُكَsurpass youإِلَىinشَيْءٍanythingأَبَدًاever

So I said: By God, I will never surpass you in anything ever.

وَعَنْAnd fromعُمَرَUmarرَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُhim

And from Umar, may God be pleased with him

أَنَّهُthat heقَالَsaid

that he said

وَدِدْتُI wishأَنِّيthat Iشَعْرَةٌwere a hairفِيinصَدْرِthe chest ofأَبِيAbuبَكْرٍBakr

I wish I were a hair in the chest of Abu Bakr

رَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُhim

may God be pleased with him.

وَعَنْAnd fromعَطَاءٍAtaعَنْfromأَبِيAbuالدَّرْدَاءِAl-Darda

And from Ata, from Abu Al-Darda

أَنَّهُthat heمَشَىwalkedبَيْنَin front ofيَدَيْhands ofأَبِيAbuبَكْرٍBakr

that he walked in front of Abu Bakr

رَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُhim

may God be pleased with him

فَقَالَso saidلَهُto himرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِof God

and the Messenger of God said to him

صَلَّىmay God's blessings beاللَّهُuponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

may God's blessings be upon him and grant him peace

أَتَمْشِيDo you walkبَيْنَin front ofيَدَيْone whoمَنْisهُوَbetterخَيْرٌthanمِنْكَyou

Do you walk in front of one who is better than you?

مَاnotطَلَعَتِhas risenالشَّمْسُthe sunوَلَاnorغَرَبَتْset

Neither has the sun risen nor set

بَعْدَafterالنَّبِيِّينَthe prophetsوَالْمُرْسَلِينَand messengers

after the prophets and messengers

عَلَىuponأَحَدٍanyoneأَفْضَلَmore virtuousمِنْthanأَبِيAbuبَكْرٍBakr

upon anyone more virtuous than Abu Bakr.

وَعَنْAnd fromعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍTalib

And from Ali bin Abi Talib

رِضْوَانُmay the pleasure ofاللَّهِGodوَرَحْمَتُهُand His mercyعَلَيْهِbe upon him

may the pleasure of God and His mercy be upon him

قَالَwho said

who said

قَالَsaidالنَّبِيُّthe Prophet

The Prophet said

صَلَّىmay God's blessings beاللَّهُuponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

may God's blessings be upon him and grant him peace

يَاOعَلِيُّAliهَلْdoتُحِبُّyou loveالشَّيْخَيْنِthe two elders

O Ali, do you love the two elders?

قُلْتُI saidنَعَمْYesيَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِof God

I said: Yes, O Messenger of God.

قَالَHe said

He said

لَاdoes notيَجْتَمِعُgatherحُبُّكَyour loveوَحُبُّهُمَاand their love

Your love and their love do not gather together

إِلَّاexceptفِيinقَلْبِthe heart ofمُؤْمِنٍa believer

except in the heart of a believer.
