وَعَنْAnd fromأَبِيAbiبَكْرٍBakrالْهُذَلِيِّAl-Hudhaliقَالَ:he said:
And from Abi Bakr Al-Hudhali, he said:
بَعَثَsentعُمَرُUmarبْنُbinهُبَيْرَةَHubayrahإِلَىtoالْحَسَنِAl-HasanالْبَصْرِيِّAl-Basriوَابْنِand IbnسِيرِينَSirinوَالشَّعْبِيِّand Al-Sha'bi
Umar bin Hubayrah sent for Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Ibn Sirin, and Al-Sha'bi,
فَقَدِمُواand they arrivedعَلَيْهِto himوَهُوَwhile he wasبِوَاسِطَ،in Wasit,
and they arrived to him while he was in Wasit,
وَكَانَand he wasرَجُلاًa manيُحِبُّwho lovedحُسْنَgoodالسِّيرَةِconduct
and he was a man who loved good conduct
وَيَسْمَعُand listenedمِنَfromالْفُقَهَاءِ،the jurists,
and listened to the jurists.
فَلَمَّاSo whenدَخَلُواthey enteredعَلَيْهِupon himأَلْطَفَهُمْhe treated them kindly
So when they entered upon him, he treated them kindly
وَأَمَرَand orderedلَهُمْfor themبِنُزُلٍprovisionsوَحُسْنِand goodضِيَافَةٍ،hospitality,
and ordered for them provisions and good hospitality.
فَأَقَامُواSo they stayedعَلَىatبَابِهِhis doorشَهْراً،for a month,
So they stayed at his door for a month.
فَغَدَاThen cameعَلَيْهِمْto themحُسْنُHusunبْنُbinهُبَيْرَةَHubayrahذَاتَoneيَوْمٍday
Then Hubayrah came to them one day
فَقَالَ:and said:إِنَّIndeedالْأَمِيرَthe Amirدَاخِلٌis coming inعَلَيْكُمْ،to you,
and said: "Indeed, the Amir is coming in to you,"
فَجَاءَso he cameيَتَوَكَّأُleaningعَلَىuponعُكَّازٍa staffلَهُof hisحَتَّىuntilدَخَلَhe entered
so he came leaning upon a staff of his until he entered,
فَسَلَّمَand greetedثُمَّthenقَالَ:said:
greeted, and then said:
إِنَّIndeedيَزِيدَYazidبْنَbinعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِAl-Malikعَبْدٌis a slaveمِنْfromعِبَادِthe slavesاللَّهِof Allah
"Indeed, Yazid bin Abd al-Malik is a slave from the slaves of Allah,
أَخَذَtookعُهُودَهُمْtheir covenantsوَأَعْطَاهُمْand gave themعَهْدَهُhis covenant
who took their covenants and gave them his covenant
كَيْso thatيَسْمَعُواthey listenلَهُto himوَيُطِيعُوا،and obey,
so that they would hear and obey him,
وَإِنَّهُand indeedيَأْتِينِيcomes to meمِنْهُfrom himكُتُبٌletters
and indeed letters come to me from him
أَعْرِفُin which I knowفِيinتَنْفِيذِهَاexecuting themالْهَلَكَةَis ruin,
in which I know that executing them is ruin.
فَإِنْSo ifأَطَعْتُهُI obey himعَصَيْتُI disobeyاللَّهَ،Allah,
So if I obey him, I disobey Allah.
فَمَاذَاSo whatتَأْمُرُونَ؟do you command?"
So what do you command?"
فَقَالَSaidالْحَسَنُ:Al-Hasan:يَاOابْنَIbnسِيرِينَSirin,أَجِبِanswerالْأَمِيرَ.the Amir.
Al-Hasan said: "O Ibn Sirin, answer the Amir." So he kept silent.
فَسَكَتَ.He kept silent.
He kept silent.
فَقَالَThen he saidلِلشَّعْبِيِّ:to Al-Sha'bi:أَجِبِAnswerالْأَمِيرَ.the Amir.
Then he said to Al-Sha'bi: "Answer the Amir."
فَتَكَلَّمَSo he spokeبِكَلَامِwith words ofهَيْبَةٍ،awe,
So he spoke with words of awe,
فَقَالَ:and said:يَاOأَبَاAbuسَعِيدٍSa'id,مَاwhatتَقُولُ؟do you say?
and said: "O Abu Sa'id, what do you say?"
فَقَالَ:He said:أَمَّاAs forإِذْsinceسَأَلْتَنِيyou asked meفَإِنَّهُthen itيَحِقُّis incumbentعَلَيَّupon meأَنْtoأُجِيبَكَ:answer you:
He said: "As for since you asked me, then it is incumbent upon me to answer you:
إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyمَانِعُكَwill preventمِنْfromيَزِيدَYazidوَلَنْand will notيَمْنَعَكَpreventيَزِيدُYazidمِنَfromاللَّهِ،Allah.
Indeed, Allah, Majestic and Mighty, will protect you from Yazid, and Yazid will never protect you from Allah.
وَإِنَّهُAnd indeedيُوشِكُit is soon thatأَنْthatيَنْزِلَwill descendبِكَupon youمَلَكٌan angelمِنَfromالسَّمَاءِthe heaven
And it is soon that an angel will descend upon you from the heaven
فَيَسْتَنْزِلَكَand bring you downمِنْfromسَرِيرِكَyour bedوَسِعَةِand the spaciousness ofقُصُورِكَyour palaces
and bring you down from your bed and the spaciousness of your palaces
إِلَىtoبَاحَةِthe courtyard ofدَارِكَyour house,ثُمَّthenيُخْرِجَكَtake you outمِنْfromبَاحَةِthe courtyard ofدَارِكَyour house
to the courtyard of your house, then take you out from the courtyard of your house
إِلَىtoضِيقِthe tightness ofقَبْرِكَyour grave,ثُمَّthenلَاnotيُوَسِّعَwill He expandعَلَيْكَupon youإِلَّاexceptعَمَلُكَ.your deeds.
to the tightness of your grave, and then nothing will expand it for you except your deeds.
يَاOابْنَIbnهُبَيْرَةَHubayrah,إِنِّيindeed Iأَنْهَاكَforbid youعَنِregardingاللَّهِAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّ،and Mighty,
O Ibn Hubayrah, indeed I warn you against (disobeying) Allah, Majestic and Mighty,
فَإِنَّمَاfor indeedجَعَلَmadeاللَّهُAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyالسُّلْطَانَthe authorityنَاصِراًas a supporterلِعِبَادِهِfor His slavesوَدِينِهِand His religion.
for Allah, Majestic and Mighty, only made the authority as a supporter for His slaves and His religion.
فَلَاSo do notتَرْكَبُواrideعِبَادَthe slavesاللَّهِof Allahسُلْطَانَwith the authority ofاللَّهِAllahفَتُذِلُّوهُمْso you humiliate them,
So do not ride the slaves of Allah with the authority of Allah to humiliate them,
فَإِنَّهُfor indeedلَاthere is noطَاعَةَobedienceلِمَخْلُوقٍto a created beingفِيinمَعْصِيَةِdisobedience toالْخَالِقِ.the Creator.
for there is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator.
يَاOابْنَIbnهُبَيْرَةَHubayrah,لَاdo notتَأْمَنَنَّfeel secureأَنْthatيَنْظُرَwill lookاللَّهُAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyإِلَيْكَat you
O Ibn Hubayrah, do not feel secure that Allah, Majestic and Mighty, might look at you
عِنْدَatأَقْبَحِthe ugliestمَاof whatتَعْمَلُyou doفِيinطَاعَتِهِdisobedience to Himنَظْرَةَwith a look ofمَقْتٍwrath,
while committing the ugliest of your deeds with a look of wrath,
فَيُغْلِقَso He closesعَنْكَfrom youبَابَthe door ofالرَّحْمَةِ.mercy.
and thus close against you the door of mercy.
يَاOابْنَIbnهُبَيْرَةَHubayrah,إِنِّيindeed Iقَدْhaveأَدْرَكْتُmetأُنَاساًpeopleمِنْfromصُدُورِthe leaders ofهَذِهِthisالْأُمَّةِnation,
O Ibn Hubayrah, I have met people from the leaders of this nation
كَانُواwho wereفِيمَاregarding whatأَحَلَّmade lawfulاللَّهُAllahلَهُمْfor themأَزْهَدَmore abstemiousمِنْكُمْthan youفِيمَاregarding whatحَرَّمَmade unlawfulاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْكُمْ،for you.
who were more abstemious regarding what Allah made lawful for them than you are regarding what Allah made unlawful for you.
وَكَانُواAnd they wereلِحَسَنَاتِهِمْregarding their good deedsأَنْthatلَاnotتُقْبَلَthey be acceptedأَخْوَفَmore fearfulمِنْكُمْthan youلِسَيِّئَاتِهِمْregarding your bad deedsأَنْthatلَاnotتُغْفَرَ،they be forgiven.
And they were more fearful that their good deeds would not be accepted than you are that your bad deeds would not be forgiven.
وَكَانُواAnd they wereلِثَوَابِregarding the reward ofالْآخِرَةِthe Hereafterأَبْصَرَmore insightfulمِنْكُمْthan youلِمَتَاعِregarding the enjoyment ofالدُّنْيَاthe worldبِأَعْيُنِكُمْ،with your eyes.
And they were more insightful regarding the reward of the Hereafter than you are regarding the enjoyment of the world with your eyes.
وَكَانُواAnd they wereعَلَىtowardsالدُّنْيَاthe worldوَهِيَwhile it wasعَلَيْهِمْturning towards themمُقْبِلَةًturning awayأَشَدَّmore intenseإِدْبَاراًin turning awayمِنْthanإِقْبَالِكُمْyour turningعَلَيْهَاtowards itوَهِيَwhile it isعَنْكُمْfrom youمُدْبِرَةٌ.turning away.
And while the world was approaching them, they were more averse to it than your approach to it while it is turning away from you.
يَاOعُمَرُUmar,إِنِّيindeed Iأُخَوِّفُكَfrighten you ofمَقَاماًa standingخَوَّفَكَfrightened you ofاللَّهُAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand MightyمِنْfromنَفْسِهِHimself
O Umar, indeed I remind you of a standing which Allah, Majestic and Mighty, frightened you of regarding Himself.
فَقَالَ:He said:ذَلِكَThat isأَنْtoأَخَافَfearمَقَامِيmy standingوَأَخَافَand fearوَعِيدِي.My threat.
He said: "That is so that he fears my standing and fears My threat."
يَاOعُمَرُ،Umar,إِنْifتَكُنْyou areمَعَwithاللَّهِAllahعَلَىagainstيَزِيدَYazidيَكْفِكَHe will suffice you againstاللَّهُAllahبَائِقَتَهُ،his harm,
O Umar, if you are with Allah against Yazid, Allah will suffice you against his harm,
وَإِنْand ifتَكُنْyou areمَعَwithيَزِيدَYazidعَلَىagainstاللَّهِAllahيَكِلْكَHe will entrust youاللَّهُAllahإِلَيْهِ.to him.
and if you are with Yazid against Allah, Allah will entrust you to him.
قَالَ:He said:فَبَكَىSo weptابْنُIbnهُبَيْرَةَHubayrahوَقَامَand stoodفِيinعَبْرَتِهِhis tearsوَانْصَرَفَand left.
He said: Ibn Hubayrah wept, stood in his tears, and left.
وَأَرْسَلَAnd he sentإِلَيْهِمْto themمِنَfromالْغَدِthe next dayبِجَوَائِزِهِمْwith their rewards
And he sent to them the next day with their rewards,
وَأَعْطَىand gaveالْحَسَنَAl-Hasanأَرْبَعَةَfourآلَافِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhams
and gave Al-Hasan four thousand dirhams,
وَابْنَand IbnسِيرِينَSirinوَالشَّعْبِيَّand Al-Sha'biأَلْفَيْنِtwo thousandأَلْفَيْنِ.two thousand.
and Ibn Sirin and Al-Sha'bi two thousand each.
فَخَرَجَSo went outالشَّعْبِيُّAl-Sha'biإِلَىtoالْمَسْجِدِthe mosqueوَقَالَ:and said:
So Al-Sha'bi went out to the mosque and said:
مَنْWhoeverقَدَرَis ableمِنْكُمْamong youأَنْtoيُؤْثِرَpreferاللَّهَAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand MightyعَلَىoverخَلْقِهِHis creationفَلْيَفْعَلْ،then let him do so.
"Whoever among you is able to prefer Allah, Majestic and Mighty, over His creation, let him do so.
فَإِنَّFor indeedابْنَIbnهُبَيْرَةَHubayrahأَرْسَلَsentإِلَيَّto meوَإِلَىand toالْحَسَنِAl-Hasanوَابْنِand IbnسِيرِينَSirinفَسَأَلَنَاand asked usعَنْaboutأَمْرٍ.a matter.
For Ibn Hubayrah sent to me, Al-Hasan, and Ibn Sirin and asked us about a matter.
وَاللَّهِBy Allahمَاdid notعَلِمَknowالْحَسَنُAl-Hasanشَيْئاًanythingجَهِلْتُهُthat I was ignorant of,وَلَاand neitherعَلِمْتُdid I knowشَيْئاًanythingجَهِلَهُthat he was ignorant of,ابْنُIbnسِيرِينَSirin,
By Allah, Al-Hasan did not know anything that I was ignorant of, nor did I know anything that Ibn Sirin was ignorant of,
وَلَكِنَّاbut weأَرَدْنَاdesiredوَجْهَthe face ofابْنِIbnهُبَيْرَةَHubayrahفَأَقْصَانَاso Allah distanced usاللَّهُAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyوَقَصَّرَand belittledبِنَا،us,
but we desired the pleasure of Ibn Hubayrah, so Allah, Majestic and Mighty, distanced us and diminished us,
وَأَرَادَand desiredالْحَسَنُAl-Hasanوَجْهَthe face ofاللَّهِAllahفَحَبَاهُso He bestowed upon himتَبَارَكَBlessedاسْمُهُis His nameوَزَادَهُ.and increased him."
while Al-Hasan desired the pleasure of Allah, so He, Blessed is His name, bestowed upon him and increased him."
وَعَنِAnd fromالْمَدَائِنِيِّAl-Mada'iniعَنْfromعَلِيِّAliبْنِbinحَرْبٍHarbقَالَ:he said:
And from Al-Mada'ini from Ali bin Harb, he said:
قَالَSaidالشَّعْبِيُّ:Al-Sha'bi:جَمَعَنَاgathered usعُمَرُUmarبْنُbinهُبَيْرَةَHubayrahبِوَاسِطَin Wasitوَفِينَاand among us wasالْحَسَنُAl-HasanالْبَصْرِيُّAl-Basri
Al-Sha'bi said: Umar bin Hubayrah gathered us in Wasit, and among us was Al-Hasan Al-Basri.
فَقَالَ:He said:أَنَاI amوَلِيُّthe guardian ofهَذِهِthisرَّعِيَّةِflockوَرُبَّمَاand perhapsكَانَwasمِنِّيfrom meالشَّيْءُthe thingالَّذِيwhichلَاnotأَرْضَاهُI am pleased with
He said: "I am the ruler of this flock, and perhaps I do something that I am not pleased with,
وَأُمُورٌand mattersتَرِدُarriveعَلَيَّupon meمِنْfromأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the FaithfulأَكْرَهُI dislikeإِمْضَاءَهَاexecuting themوَإِنْفَاذَهَا.and implementing them.
and matters arrive to me from the Commander of the Faithful which I dislike executing and implementing."
فَقَالَSaidالشَّعْبِيُّ:Al-Sha'bi:لَاNoعَلَيْكَharm upon youأَيُّهَاOالْأَمِيرُ،Amir,
Al-Sha'bi said: "No harm upon you, O Amir,
إِنَّمَاindeedالْوَالِيthe rulerوَالِدٌis like a fatherيُخْطِئُhe makes mistakesوَيُصِيبُ،and is correct,
the ruler is like a father; he makes mistakes and is correct.
وَمَاAnd whateverيَرِدُarrivesعَلَيْكَto youمِنْofرَأْيِopinionأَمِيرِof the Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful,فَإِنِifاسْتَطَعْتَyou are ableأَنْtoتَرُدَّهُreject itفَارُدُدْهُthen reject itوَإِلَّاand otherwiseفَلَاnoضَيْرَharmعَلَيْكَ.upon you.
And whatever opinion of the Commander of the Faithful reaches you, if you are able to reject it, then reject it, and otherwise there is no harm upon you."
فَقَالَ:He said:مَاWhatتَقُولُdo you sayيَاOأَبَاAbuسَعِيدٍ؟Sa'id?
He said: "What do you say, O Abu Sa'id?"
فَقَالَSaidالْحَسَنُ:Al-Hasan:قَالَSaidرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah bestow peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace:
Al-Hasan said: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
مَنِWhoeverاسْتَرْعَاهُAllah puts in charge ofاللَّهُAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyرَعِيَّةًa flockفَلَمْand does notيَحُطْprotectمِنْfromوَرَائِهَاbehind themبِالنَّصِيحَةِwith sincere adviceحَرَّمَhas forbiddenاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himالْجَنَّةَ،Paradise.
'Whoever Allah, Majestic and Mighty, puts in charge of a flock and does not protect them with sincere advice, Allah has forbidden Paradise for him.'
وَأَمَّاAnd as forرَأْيُthe opinion ofأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful,فَإِذَاso whenوَرَدَit arrivesعَلَيْكَto youفَاعْرِضْهُthen present itعَلَىtoكِتَابِthe Book ofاللَّهِAllah.
And as for the opinion of the Commander of the Faithful, when it reaches you, present it to the Book of Allah.
فَإِنْIfوَافَقَهُit agrees with itفَأَمْضِهِthen execute itوَإِنْand ifخَالَفَهُit opposes itفَارُدُدْهُ،then reject it.
If it agrees with it, execute it; and if it opposes it, reject it.
فَإِنَّFor indeedاللَّهَAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyيَمْنَعُكَwill protect youمِنْfromيَزِيدَYazidوَلَنْand will neverيَمْنَعَكَprotect youيَزِيدُYazidمِنَfromاللَّهِ.Allah.
For Allah, Majestic and Mighty, will protect you from Yazid, and Yazid will never protect you from Allah."
ثُمَّThenأَقْبَلَturnedالْحَسَنُAl-HasanعَلَىtoالشَّعْبِيِّAl-Sha'biفَقَالَ:and said:
Then Al-Hasan turned to Al-Sha'bi and said:
وَيْلَكَWoe to youيَاOشَعْبِيُّ!Sha'bi!يَقُولُPeople sayالنَّاسُthatإِنَّindeedالشَّعْبِيَّAl-Sha'biفَقِيهُis the jurist ofأَهْلِthe people ofالْكُوفَةِKufa,
"Woe to you, O Sha'bi! People say that Al-Sha'bi is the jurist of the people of Kufa,
فَيَدْخُلُyet he entersعَلَىuponجَبَّارٍa tyrantمِنَfromالْجَبَابِرَةِthe tyrantsفَيُزَيِّنُand adornsلَهُfor himالْمَعْصِيَةَ!disobedience!
and he enters upon a tyrant from the tyrants to adorn disobedience for him!"
فَقَالَ:He said:وَاللَّهِBy AllahيَاOأَبَاAbuسَعِيدٍSa'id,لَقَدْindeedقُلْتُI spokeوَأَنَاwhile Iأَعْلَمُknewمَاwhatفِيهِ!was in it!
He said: "By Allah, O Abu Sa'id, I spoke while I knew what was in it!"
قَالَ:He said:ذَلِكَThatأَوْكَدُis more bindingلِلْحُجَّةِfor the proofعَلَيْكَagainst youوَأَبْعَدُand furtherلَكَfor youمِنَfromالْعُذْرِ.excuse.
He said: "That is more binding as proof against you and further from you having an excuse."
قِيلَ:It was said:وَوُجِدَAnd it was foundفِيinكُتُبِthe books ofبُزُرْجْمِهْرَBuzurjmihrصَحِيفَةٌa scrollفِيهَا:in which was:
It was said: And it was found in the books of Buzurjmihr a scroll in which was written:
إِنَّIndeedحَاجَةَthe need ofاللَّهِAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand MightyإِلَىfromعِبَادِهِHis slavesأَنْis thatيَعْرِفُوهُ،they know Him,
"Indeed, the requirement of Allah, Majestic and Mighty, from His slaves is that they know Him,
فَمَنْso whoeverعَرَفَهُknew Himلَمْdid notيَعْصِهِdisobey Himطَرْفَةَthe blinking ofعَيْنٍ.an eye.
so whoever knows Him does not disobey Him for the blinking of an eye.
كَيْفَHowالْبَقَاءُis the remainingبَعْدَafterالْفَنَاءِ؟perishing?
How is remaining after perishing?
كَيْفَHowيَأْسَىdoes grieveالْمَرْءُa manعَلَىoverمَاwhatفَاتَهُmissed himوَالْمَوْتُwhile deathيَطْلُبُهُ؟seeks him?
How can a man grieve over what he missed while death seeks him?"
فَقَالَSaidكَسْرَى:Kisra:لَمْIt was notيَكُنْfromمِنْrightحَقٍّupon himعَلَيْهِthat he be killedأَنْand I amيُقْتَلَregretfulوَأَنَاoverنَادِمٌthat.عَلَىoverذَلِكَ.that.
Kisra said: "It was not right upon him that he be killed, and I am regretful over that."
قِيلَ:It was said:وَحَضَرَتِAnd approachedالْوَفَاةُthe deathرَجُلاًof a manمِنْfromحُكَمَاءِthe wise men ofفَارِسَPersia,
It was said: Death approached a man from the wise men of Persia,
فَقِيلَso it was saidلَهُ:to him:كَيْفَHowحَالُكَ؟is your state?
so it was said to him: "How is your state?"
فَقَالَ:He said:كَيْفَHowيَكُونُcan beحَالُthe state ofمَنْone whoيُرِيدُintendsسَفَراًa journeyبَعِيداًdistantبِغَيْرِwithoutزَادٍprovisions
He said: "How can be the state of one who intends a distant journey without provisions,
وَيَقْدَمُand arrivesعَلَىbeforeمَلِكٍa kingعَادِلٍjustبِغَيْرِwithoutحُجَّةٍan argument,
and arrives before a just king without an argument,
وَيَسْكُنُand dwells inقَبْراًa graveمُوحِشاًdesolateبِغَيْرِwithoutأَنِيسٍ؟!a companion?!"
and dwells in a desolate grave without a companion?!"
