أَسْتَغْفِرُI ask forgivenessاللَّهَfrom Allahمِمَّاfor whatيَعْلَمُknowsاللَّهُAllah......إِنَّIndeedالشَّقِيَّthe wretchedلَمَنْis he whoلَمْdoes notيَرْحَمِshow mercyاللَّهُAllah

I ask forgiveness from Allah for what Allah knows ... Indeed, the wretched is he whom Allah does not show mercy to.

هَبْهُGrant it to himتَجَاوُزاًas overlookingلِيfor meعَنْoverكُلِّeveryسَيِّئَةٍevil deed......وَاسَوْءَتَاهْOh, my shame!مِنْfromحَيَائِيmy shynessيَوْمَthe dayأَلْقَاهْI meet Him

Grant it as overlooking all my evil deeds ... Oh, my shame from my modesty the day I meet Him!

وَلِإِسْمَاعِيلَAnd for Isma'ilبْنِson ofالْقَاسِمِal-Qasim:i

And by Isma'il bin al-Qasim:

تَعْصِيYou disobeyالْإِلَهَthe Deityوَأَنْتَwhile youتُظْهِرُdisplayحُبَّهُHis love......هَذَاthisمُحَالٌis impossibleفِيinالْقِيَاسِanalogyبَدِيعُstrange

You disobey the Deity while you display His love ... this is an impossible and strange analogy.

لَوْIfكَانَwereحُبُّكَyour loveصَادِقاًsincereلَأَطَعْتَهُyou would have obeyed Him......إِنَّIndeedالْمُحِبَّthe loverلِمَنْto the one whomيُحِبُّhe lovesمَطِيعُis obedient

If your love were sincere, you would have obeyed Him ... Indeed, the lover is obedient to the one he loves.

وَلِآخَرَAnd for another:i

And by another:

أَيَاOh!عَجَباًhow strangeكَيْفَhowيَعْصِيdoes he disobeyالْإِلَـthe Dei-هَـ-tyأَمْorكَيْفَhowيَجْحَدُهُdoes he deny Himالْجَاحِدُthe denier

Oh, how strange! How can the Deity be disobeyed, or how can the denier deny Him?

وَفِيAnd inكُلِّeveryشَيْءٍthingلَهُfor Himقُدْرَةٌis a power......تَدُلُّpointingعَلَىtoأَنَّهُthat Heوَاحِدُis One

And in every thing there is a power for Him ... pointing to the fact that He is One.

وَلِلَّهِAnd for Allahفِيinكُلِّeveryتَحْرِيكَةٍmovement......وَتَسْكِينَةٍand stillnessأَبَداًalwaysشَاهِدُis a witness

And for Allah in every movement ... and stillness there is always a witness.

وَلِأَبِيAnd for AbuنُوَاسٍNuwاسالْحَسَنِal-Hasanبْنِson ofهَانِئٍHani':i

And by Abu Nuwas al-Hasan bin Hani':

سُبْحَانَGlory be toمَنْthe One whoخَلَقَcreatedالْخَلْـcrea-ـقَ-turesمِنْfromضَعِيفٍweakمَهِينٍand humble origin

Glory be to the One who created the creatures from a weak and humble origin.

يَسُوقُهُمْHe drives themمِنْfromقَرَارٍabode......إِلَىtoقَرَارٍabodeمَكِينٍsecure

He drives them from an abode ... to a secure abode.

يُحَوِّرُHe transformsخَلْقاًcreationفَخَلْقاًafter creation......فِيinالْحُجُبِthe veilsدُونَhidden fromالْعُيُونِthe eyes

He transforms creation after creation ... within veils hidden from the eyes.

حَتَّىUntilبَدَتْthere appearedحَرَكَاتٌmovements......مَخْلُوقَةٌcreatedمِنْfromسُكُونِstillness

Until there appeared movements ... created from stillness.

وَلِآخَرَAnd for another:i

And by another:

أَخِيMy brotherمَاwhatبَالُis the matter withقَلْبِكَyour heartلَيْسَit is notيَنْقَىpurified......كَأَنَّكَas if youلَاdo notتَظُنُّthinkالْمَوْتَdeathحَقّاًto be true

My brother, what is the matter with your heart that it is not purified ... as if you do not think death is true?

أَلَاBeholdيَاOابْنَson ofالَّذِينَthose whoمَضَوْاpassed awayوَبَادُواand perished......أَمَاtrulyوَاللَّهِby Allahمَاdid notذَهَبُواgoلِتَبْقَىso that you may remain

Behold, O son of those who passed away and perished ... truly, by Allah, they did not go so that you may remain.

وَمَاAnd notلَكَfor youغَيْرُother thanتَقْوَىfear ofاللَّهِAllahزَادٌis provision......إِذَاwhenجُعِلْتَyou are madeإِلَىtoاللَّهَوَاتِthe gravesتَرْقَىto ascend

And you have no provision other than the fear of Allah ... when you are made to ascend to the graves.

وَلِآخَرَAnd for another:i

And by another:

يَاOقَلْبُheartمَهْلاًgentlyوَكُنْand beعَلَىuponحَذَرٍcaution......فَقَدْfor indeedلَعَمْرِيby my lifeأُمِرْتَyou were commandedبِالْحَذَرِwith caution

O heart, take it easy and be cautious ... for indeed, by my life, you were commanded to be cautious.

مَاWhatلَكَis with youبِالتَّرَهَّاتِwith vain talkمُشْتَغِلاًbusy......أَفِيisيَدَيْكَin your handsالْأَمَانُthe safetyمِنْfromسَقَرَSaqar

Why are you busy with vain talk ... is safety from Saqar in your hands?

وَلِآخَرَAnd for another:i

And by another:

إِنْIfكُنْتَyou areتُوقِنُcertainبِالْقِيَامَةِof the Resurrection......وَاجْتَرَأْتَand you daredإِلَىtowardsالْخَطِيَّةِsin

If you are certain of the Resurrection and you dared to commit sin...

فَلَقَدْthen indeedهَلَكْتَyou have perishedوَإِنْand ifجَحَدْتَyou denied......فَذَاكَthen thatأَعْظَمُis greaterلِلْبَلِيَّةِin misfortune

...then indeed you have perished, and if you denied it, then that is an even greater misfortune.

وَلِآخَرَAnd for another:i

And by another:

وَأَفْنِيَةُAnd the courtyards ofالْمُلُوكِkingsمُحَجَّبَاتٌare veiled......وَبَابُand the door ofاللَّهِAllahمَبْذُولُopenالْفِنَاءِat the courtyard

And the courtyards of kings are veiled ... while the door of Allah has its courtyard open.

فَمَنْThen whomأَرْجُوdo I hope inسِوَاهُother than Himلِكَشْفِto removeضُرٍّharm......وَبَلْوَىand afflictionحِينَwhenأَجْهَدُI striveفِيinالدُّعَاءِsupplication

Then whom do I hope in other than Him to remove harm ... and affliction when I strive in supplication?

وَشَكْوَائِيAnd my complaintإِلَىis toمَلِكٍa Kingعَظِيمٍmighty......جَلِيلٍmajesticلَاwho does notيَصُمُّbecome deafعَنِtoالدُّعَاءِsupplication

And my complaint is to a mighty King ... majestic, who does not become deaf to supplication.

[مَسَاوِئُ[The vices ofمَنْone whoلَمْdoes notيَتَورَّعْ]exercise piety]

[The vices of one who does not exercise piety]

ابْنُIbnأَبِيAbiالْعَرْجَاءِal-Arja'قَالَsaid:iأَرَادَwantedمُوسَىMusaبْنُson ofدَاوُدَDawudبْنِson ofعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahبْنِson ofالْعَبَّاسِal-Abbasالْخُرُوجَto set outإِلَىforالْحَجِّthe Hajj

Ibn Abi al-Arja' said: Musa bin Dawud bin Ali bin Abdullah bin al-Abbas wanted to set out for the Hajj.

فَدَعَاSo he calledبِأَبِيfor AbuدُلَامَةَDutamaفَقَالَand saidلَهُto him:iتَهَيَّأْPrepare yourselfحَتَّىso thatتَخْرُجَyou may go outمَعَنَاwith us

So he called for Abu Dulama and said to him: Prepare yourself so that you may go out with us.

وَأَعْطَاهُAnd he gave himعَشَرَةَtenآلَافِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsوَقَالَand said:iخَلِّفْleave behindلِعِيَالِكَfor your familyمَاwhatيَكْفِيهِمْsuffices them

And he gave him ten thousand dirhams and said: Leave behind for your family what will suffice them.

وَإِنَّمَاAnd indeedأَرَادَwantedمُوسَىMusaأَنْthatيَأْنَسَhe keep companyبِهِwith himفِيonطَرِيقِهِhis journey

Musa only wanted him to keep him company on his journey,

وَيُحَدِّثَهُand tell himبِنَوَادِرِهِhis witty anecdotesوَمِلَحِهِand jokesوَيُسَامِرَهُand converse with himبِاللَّيْلِby nightوَالنَّهَارِand dayوَيُنْشِدَهُand recite to himالْأَشْعَارَpoems

and tell him his witty anecdotes and jokes, converse with him by night and day, and recite poems to him.

وَكَانَAnd Abu Dulamaأَبُوwasدُلَامَةَfulfillingيَفِيthatبِذَلِكَallكُلِّهِwithمَعَeleganceظَرْفٍthatكَانَhe possessedفِيهِand charmوَلُطْفٍ.

And Abu Dulama used to fulfill all of that with the elegance and charm that he possessed.

وَكَانَAnd he wasمِنْamongإِبْرَازِthe prominent figures ofالْمُلُوكِkings

And he was among the prominent companions of kings.

فَلَمَّاSo whenحَضَرَapproachedخُرُوجُthe departure ofمُوسَىMusaهَرَبَhe fledإِلَىtoالسَّوَادِal-Sawadبِالْكُوفَةِin Kufa

So when the time of Musa's departure approached, he fled to al-Sawad in Kufa

فَجَعَلَand beganيَشْرَبُdrinkingمِنْfromخَمْرِهَاits wineوَيَتَمَتَّعُand enjoyingفِيinنُزْهَتِهَاits lushness

and began drinking its wine and enjoying its lushness.

وَقَدْAndسَأَلَaskedعَنْهُabout himمُوسَىMusaفَقِيلَand it was saidلَهُto him:iاسْتَتَرَHe has gone into hiding

Musa asked about him, and it was said to him: He has gone into hiding.

فَطَلَبَهُSo he searched for himتَحْتَunderكُلِّeveryحَجَرٍstoneفَلَمْbutيَقْدِرْhe could notعَلَيْهِfind him

So he searched for him under every stone but could not find him.

فَخَافَSo he fearedأَنْthatيَفُوتَهُhe would missالْحَجُّthe Hajjفَلَمَّاand whenأَيْسَhe despairedمِنْهُof himقَالَhe said:iاتْرُكُوهُLeave himإِلَىtoنَارِthe fire ofاللَّهِAllahوَحَرِّand the heat ofسَقَرَSaqar،,وَخَرَجَand he set out

He feared he would miss the Hajj, and when he despaired of him, he said: Leave him to the fire of Allah and the heat of Saqar, and he set out.

فَلَمَّاThen whenشَارَفَhe drew nearالْقَادِسِيَّةَal-Qadisiyyahنَظَرَhe sawإِلَىAbuأَبِيDulamaدُلَامَةَcoming outقَدْofخَرَجَa villageمِنْintendingقَرْيَةٍanotherيُرِيدُ.أُخْرَى.

When he drew near al-Qadisiyyah, he saw Abu Dulama coming out of a village intending another.

فَبَصَرُواSo they spotted himبِهِand brought himوَأَتَوْاto himبِهِ.

So they spotted him and brought him to him.

فَقَالَHe said:iقَيِّدُوهُPut fetters on himوَأَلْقُوهُand throw himفِيintoالْمَحْمِلِthe litter،,فَفُعِلَand that was doneبِهِto himذَلِكَ.

He said: Put fetters on him and throw him into the litter, and that was done to him.

وَأَنْشَأَAnd he beganيَقُولُreciting:i

And he began reciting:

يَاOمَعْشَرَcompany ofالنَّاسِpeopleقُولُواsayأَجْمَعِينَallمَعاًtogether......صَلَّىMay blessالِلّهُAllahعَلَىMusaمُوسَىson ofبْنِDawudدَاوُدَ.

O company of people, say all together ... May Allah bless Musa bin Dawud!

أَمَّاAs forأَبُوكَyour fatherفَعَيْنُthe very eye ofالْجُودِgenerosityتَعْرِفُهُknows him......وَأَنْتَand youأَشْبَهُare the most similarخَلْقِof Allah's creationاللَّهِto generosityبِالْجُودِ.

As for your father, the very eye of generosity knows him ... and you are the most similar of Allah's creation to generosity.

نُبِّئْتُI have been informedأَنَّthatطَرِيقَthe road toالْحَجِّthe Hajjمَعْطِشَةٌis thirst-inducing......مِنَfromالطِّلَاءِwineوَمَاand my drinkingشُرْبِيis notبِتَصْرِيدِscarce

I have been informed that the road to the Hajj is thirst-inducing of wine, and my drinking is not scarce.

وَاللَّهِBy Allahمَاthere is notبِيin meمِنْofخَيْرٍgoodفَتَطْلُبَهُfor you to seek it......فِيinالْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsوَلَاnorدِينِيis my religionبِمَحْمُودِpraised

By Allah, there is no good in me for you to seek it among the Muslims, nor is my religion praised.

كَأَنَّAs ifدِيبَاجَتَيْthe two cheeks ofخَدَّيْهِhis faceمِنْare ofذَهَبٍgold......إِذَاwhenتَكَسَّرَit foldsفِيinأَثْوَابِهِhis garmentsالسُّودِblack

As if the two cheeks of his face are of gold when it folds in his black garments.

إِنِّيIndeed Iأَعُوذُseek refugeبِدَاوُدَin Dawudوَتُرْبَتِهِand his grave......مِنْfromأَنْthatأَحُجَّI perform HajjبِكَرْهٍunwillinglyيَاOابْنَson ofدَاوُدَDawud

Indeed, I seek refuge in Dawud and his grave from performing Hajj unwillingly, O son of Dawud!

فَقَالَMusa saidمُوسَىThrow him:out ofأَلْقُوهُthe litterمِنَupon himالْمَحْمِلِbe the curseعَلَيْهِof Allahلَعْنَةُand leave himاللَّهِto goوَدَعُوهُto the fire ofيَذْهَبُAllah!إِلَى.سَقَرِ.اللَّهِ.!.

Musa said: Throw him out of the litter, upon him be the curse of Allah, and leave him to go to the fire of Allah!

فَأُلْقِيَSo he was thrownعَنِfromالْمَحْمِلِthe litterوَمَضَىand Musa proceededمُوسَىonلِوَجْهِهِhis way

So he was thrown from the litter, and Musa proceeded on his way.

فَمَاAnd stillزَالَAbu Dulamaأَبُوremainدُلَامَةَin al-Sawadبِالسَّوَادِdrinkingيَشْرَبُfrom its wineمِنْand enjoyingخَمْرِهَاits lushnessوَيَتَمَتَّعُuntil he spentفِيthe ten thousandنُزْهَتِهَاdirhamsحَتَّىwithأَتْلَفَhis brothersالْعَشَرَةَand companionsالْآلَافِ.الدِّرْهَمِ.مَعَ.إِخْوَانِهِ.وَنُدَمَائِهِ.

Abu Dulama remained in al-Sawad, drinking from its wine and enjoying its lushness until he spent the ten thousand dirhams with his brothers and drinking companions.

وَانْصَرَفَAnd Musa returnedمُوسَىand Abu Dulamaفَدَخَلَenteredعَلَيْهِupon himأَبُوto congratulateدُلَامَةَhimيُهَنِّئُهُ.

Musa returned, and Abu Dulama entered upon him to congratulate him.

فَلَمَّاWhenبَصَرَhe sawبِهِhimقَالَhe said:iيَاOمُحَارِفُunfortunate oneأَتَدْرِيdo you knowمَاwhatفَاتَكَyou missed?

When he saw him, he said: O unfortunate one, do you know what you missed?

فَقَالَHe said:iوَاللَّهِBy AllahيَاOسَيِّدِيmy masterمَاdid notفَاتَنِيmiss meلَيْلٌnightوَلَاnorنَهَارٌday،,يَعْنِيmeaningاللَّهْوَamusementوَالْقَصْفَand merrymaking

He said: By Allah, O my master, neither night nor day missed me, meaning amusement and merrymaking.

ثُمَّThenأَنْشَدَهُhe recited to himمَدِيحاًa panegyricلَهُin his honorفِيهِ.فَاسْتَحْسَنَهُSo Musa found it pleasingوَأَمَرَand orderedلَهُa rewardبِجَائِزَةٍfor him.

Then he recited a panegyric in his honor to him. Musa found it pleasing and ordered a reward for him.

قِيلَIt was said:iوَكَانَthat a soldierجُنْدِيٌّin Qazwinبِقَزْوِينَused to prayيُصَلِّيin someفِيmosquesبَعْضِ.الْمَسَاجِدِ.

It was said that a soldier in Qazwin used to pray in some mosques.

فَافْتَقَدَهُThe muezzin missed himالْمُؤَذِّنُfor some daysأَيَّاماًso he knockedفَقَرَعَon the doorعَلَيْهِfor himالْبَابَand he came outفَخَرَجَto him.إِلَيْهِ.

The muezzin missed him for some days, so he knocked on the door for him, and he came out to him.

فَقَالَThe muezzin saidلَهُto himالْمُؤَذِّنُ: Abu:Who?أَبُوHe saidمَنْ: Abu?al-Jahim.قَالَThe muezzin said:: Just closeأَبُوthis doorالْجَحِيمِman...قَالَ.:.بَسْ.رُدَّ.يَا.هَذَا.الْبَابَ.

The muezzin said to him: Abu who? He said: Abu al-Jahim. The muezzin said: Just close this door, man.

قَالَAnd it was saidوَقِيلَto al-Qayniلِلْقَيْنِيِّ: What is:your lightestمَاsin?أَيْسَرُHe saidذَنْبِكَ: The night?of the convent.قَالَ.:.لَيْلَةُ.الدِّيرِ.

And it was said to al-Qayni: What is your lightest sin? He said: The night of the convent.

قِيلَIt was said:iوَمَاAnd what isلَيْلَةُthe nightالدِّيرِof the convent??i

It was said: And what is the night of the convent?

قَالَHe said:iنَزَلْتُI stayedبِدَيْرَانِيَّةٍwith a female convent residentفَأَكَلْتُand I ateعِنْدَهَاwith herطَفِيشلاًtafishalبِلَحْمِwith porkخِنْزِيرٍand drankوَشَرِبْتُher wineخَمْرَهَاand stoleوَسَرَقْتُher cloakكَسَاءَهَاand left.وَخَرَجْتُ.

He said: I stayed with a female convent resident and ate tafishal with pork with her, drank her wine, stole her cloak, and left.

قَالَSaidبَشَّارٌBashshar:i

Bashshar said:
