عَنْFromأَبِيAbuهُرَيْرَةَ،Hurayrah,
From Abu Hurayrah, may Allah have mercy on him, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: While I was sleeping...
رَحِمَهُmayاللَّهُ،Allah have mercy on him,
may Allah have mercy on him
قَالَsaidالنَّبِيُّ،the Prophet,
the Prophet said
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:
may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
بَيْنَاWhileأَنَاIنَائِمٌwas sleeping
While I was sleeping
إِذْsuddenlyرَأَيْتُنِيI saw myselfعَلَىuponقَلِيبٍa well
suddenly I saw myself upon a well
وَعَلَيْهَاand over itدَلْوٌ،was a bucket,
and over it was a bucket,
فَنَزَعْتُso I drewمَاwhatشَاءَAllahاللَّهُwilled,
so I drew what Allah willed,
ثُمَّthenأَخَذَهَاtook itمِنِّيfrom meأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,
then Abu Bakr took it from me,
أَوْorقَالَhe saidابْنُIbnأَبِيAbiقُحَافَةَ:Quhafah:
or he said Ibn Abi Quhafah:
فَنَزَعَso he drewمِنْهَاfrom itذَنُوباًone bucketأَوْorذَنُوبَيْنِtwo buckets,
so he drew from it one bucket or two buckets,
وَفِيand inنَزْعِهِhis drawingضَعْفٌwas some weakness
and in his drawing was some weakness
وَاللَّهُand AllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Exalted is Heيَغْفِرُwill forgiveلَهُ،him,
and Allah, Majestic and Exalted is He, will forgive him,
ثُمَّthenأَخَذَهَاtook itعُمَرُUmar
then Umar took it
فَلَمْand notأَرَdid I seeعَبْقَرِيّاًany masterمِنَamongالنَّاسِthe people
and I did not see any master among the people
يَفْرِيperformingفَرْيَهُhis feat
performing his feat
حَتَّىuntilضَرَبَthe peopleالنَّاسُwateredبِعَطَنٍ.their camels at the watering place.
until the people watered their camels at the watering place.
وَرُوِيَAnd it was narratedأَنَّthatامْرَأَةًa womanفِيinالْجَاهِلِيَّةِthe pre-Islamic period
And it was narrated that a woman in the pre-Islamic period
تُسَمَّىcalledعَاصِيَةًAsiyahأَسْلَمَتْembraced Islam
called Asiyah embraced Islam
فَكَرِهَتْand she dislikedاسْمَهَاher name
and she disliked her name
فَأَتَتْso she came toعُمَرَ،Umar,
so she came to Umar,
رَحِمَهُmayاللَّهُ،Allah have mercy on him,
may Allah have mercy on him,
فَقَالَتْ:and said:
and said:
إِنِّيIndeed, Iكَرِهَتُdislikeاسْمِيmy nameفَسَمِّنِي.so rename me.
Indeed, I dislike my name, so rename me.
فَقَالَ:He said:
He said:
أَنْتِYouجَمِيلَةُ.are Jamilah.
You are Jamilah.
فَغَضِبَتْSo she became angryوَقَالَتْ:and said:
So she became angry and said:
سَمَّيْتِنِيYou named meبِاسْمِwith the name ofالْإِمَاءِ!slave women!
You named me with the name of slave women!
ثُمَّThenأَتَتْshe came toرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,
Then she came to the Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فَقَالَتْ:and said:
and said:
بِأَبِيMay my fatherأَنْتَbe for youوَأُمِّيand my mother,
May my father and mother be sacrificed for you,
إِنِّيindeed Iكَرِهْتُdislikedاسْمِيmy nameفَسَمِّنِي!so rename me!
indeed I disliked my name so rename me!
فَقَالَ:He said:
He said:
أَنْتِYouجَمِيلَةُ،are Jamilah,
You are Jamilah,
فَقَالَتْ:so she said:
so she said:
يَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِof Allah,
O Messenger of Allah,
إِنِّيIأَتَيْتُcame toعُمَرَUmar
I came to Umar
فَسَمَّانِيand he named meجَمِيلَةَJamilah
and he named me Jamilah
فَغَضِبْتُ.so I became angry.
so I became angry.
فَقَالَ:He said:
He said:
أَوَمَاDid you notعَلِمْتِknow
Did you not know
أَنَّthatاللَّهَAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Exalted is He
that Allah, Majestic and Exalted is He,
عِنْدَis atلِسَانِthe tongue ofعُمَرَUmarوَيَدِهِ؟and his hand?
is at the tongue of Umar and his hand?
وَعَنْAnd fromسَعِيدِSaeedبْنِson ofجُبَيْرٍJubayr
And from Saeed bin Jubayr
فِيregardingقَوْلِهِHis sayingعَزَّExaltedوَجَلَّ:and Majestic is He:
regarding His saying Exalted and Majestic is He:
"وَصَالِحُ"And the righteousالْمُؤْمِنِينَ"،of the believers",
"And the righteous of the believers",
قَالَ:he said:
he said:
نَزَلَتْIt was revealedفِيconcerningعُمَرَUmarخَاصَّةً.specifically.
It was revealed concerning Umar specifically.
وَعَنْAnd fromعَلِيٍّ،Ali,
And from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him,
رَضِيَmayاللَّهُAllahعَنْهُ،be pleased with him,
may Allah be pleased with him,
قَالَ:he said:
he said:
قَالَsaidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,
said the Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:
may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
رَحِمَMay Allahاللَّهُhave mercy onعُمَرَUmar
May Allah have mercy on Umar
لِقَوْلِfor speakingالْحَقِّthe truth
for speaking the truth
وَإِنْeven ifكَانَit wasمُرّاً،bitter,
even if it was bitter,
تَرَكَهُit left himالْحَقُّthe truthمَاwith notلَهُfor himمِنْofصَدِيقٍ.any friend.
the truth left him with no friend.
وَعَنْAnd fromسَعِيدِSaeedبْنِson ofجُبَيْرٍJubayrقَالَ:who said:
And from Saeed bin Jubayr who said:
إِنَّIndeedجِبْرِيلَGabrielقَالَsaidلِلنَّبِيِّ،to the Prophet,
Indeed Gabriel said to the Prophet,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:
may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
اقْرَأْGreetعَلَىUmar withعُمَرَpeaceالسَّلَامَand inform him
Greet Umar with peace and inform him
وَأَعْلِمْهُthat his angerأَنَّis strengthغَضَبَهُand his pleasureعِزٌّis a ruling.وَرِضَاهُand his pleasureحُكْمٌ.is a ruling.
that his anger is strength and his pleasure is a ruling.
وَعَنْAnd fromعُثْمَانَUthmanبْنِson ofمَظْعُونٍMaz'unقَالَ:who said:
And from Uthman bin Maz'un who said:
مَرَّPassedبِنَاby usعُمَرُ،Umar,
Passed by us Umar,
رَضِيَmayاللَّهُAllahعَنْهُ،be pleased with him,
may Allah be pleased with him,
وَنَحْنُwhile we wereجُلُوسٌsittingعِنْدَwithالنَّبِيِّ،the Prophet,
while we were sitting with the Prophet,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فَقَالَ:and he said:
and he said:
هَذَاThisغُلَّقُis the lock ofبَابِthe door ofالْفِتْنَةِ،tribulation,
This is the lock of the door of tribulation,
لَاthere will notيَزَالُcease to beبَيْنَكُمْbetween youوَبَيْنَandالْفِتْنَةِtribulationبَابٌa door
there will not cease to be a door between you and tribulation
مَاas long asعَاشَlivesهَذَاthis personبَيْنَamongأَظْهُرِكُمْyouأَوْorظَهْرَانِيكُمْ،among you,
as long as this person lives among you,
فَقَالَand he pointedبِيَمِينِهِwith his right handوَشَبَّكَand interlockedبَيْنَbetweenأَصَابِعِهِ.his fingers.
and he pointed with his right hand and interlocked his fingers.
وَعَنْAnd fromابْنِIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbas
And from Ibn Abbas
عَنِfromالنَّبِيِّ،the Prophet,
from the Prophet,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
قَالَ:he said:
he said:
جَاءَنِيCame to meجِبْرِيلُ،Gabriel,
Came to me Gabriel,
عَلَيْهِuponالسَّلَامُ،him be peace,
upon him be peace,
حِينَwhenأَسْلَمَembraced Islamعُمَرُ،Umar,
when Umar embraced Islam,
رَحِمَهُmayاللَّهُ،Allah have mercy on him,
may Allah have mercy on him,
فَقَالَand saidلِي:to me:
and said to me:
تَبَاشَرَتِRejoicedالْمَلَائِكَةُthe angelsبِإِسْلَامِat the Islam ofعُمَرَUmar
The angels rejoiced at the Islam of Umar
وَعُمَرُand Umarسِرَاجُis the lamp ofأَهْلِthe people ofالْجَنَّةِ.Paradise.
and Umar is the lamp of the people of Paradise.
وَعَنْAnd fromجَابِرِJabirبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِtheالْأَنْصَارِيِّAnsariقَالَ:who said:
And from Jabir bin Abdullah Al-Ansari who said:
قَالَsaidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,
said the Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:
may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
بَيْنَاWhileأَنَاIفِيwas inالْجَنَّةِParadise
While I was in Paradise
إِذْsuddenlyرَأَيْتُI sawدَاراًa house
suddenly I saw a house
فَأَرَدْتُso I wantedأَنْtoأَدْخُلَهَاenter it
so I wanted to enter it
فَسَأَلْتُand I askedلِمَنْto whomهِيَdoes it belong
and I asked to whom does it belong
فَقِيلَso it was saidهِيَ"It isلِعُمَرَfor Umarبْنِson ofالْخَطَّابِ،Al-Khattab."
so it was said "It is for Umar bin Al-Khattab."
فَذَكَرْتُThen I rememberedغَيْرَتَهُhis jealousyفَرَجَعْتُ،so I turned back,
Then I remembered his jealousy so I turned back,
فَقَالَand Umar saidعُمَرُ:Umar:
and Umar said:
يَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِof Allah,
O Messenger of Allah,
لَسْتَwould Iمِمَّنْbe oneيُغَارُwhose jealousyعَلَيْهِ.is guarded against by you?
would I be one whose jealousy is guarded against by you?
وَعَنْAnd fromعَلِيٍّ،Ali,
And from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him:
رَضِيَmayاللَّهُAllahعَنْهُ:be pleased with him:
may Allah be pleased with him:
مَاWeكُنَّاusedنُبْعِدُnot to consider it far-fetchedأَنَّthatالسَّكِينَةَtranquility
We used not to consider it far-fetched that tranquility
كَانَتْwasتَنْطِقُspeakingعَلَىuponلِسَانِthe tongue ofعُمَرَ.Umar.
was speaking upon the tongue of Umar.
وَعَنْAnd fromعَطَاءٍAtaعَنِfromابْنِIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbasقَالَ:who said:
And from Ata from Ibn Abbas who said:
لَمَّاWhenنَزَلَتْwas revealedهَذِهِthisالْآيَةُ:verse:
When this verse was revealed:
"وَلَقَدْ"And certainlyخَلَقْنَاWe createdالْإِنْسَانَmanمِنْfromسُلَالَةٍan extractمِنْofطِينٍclay
"And certainly We created man from an extract of clay
ثُمَّthenجَعَلْنَاهُWe placed himنُطْفَةًas a sperm-dropفِيinقَرَارٍa lodgingمَكِينٍ"،secure",
then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a secure lodging",
الْآيَةَ،the verse,
the verse,
"ثُمَّ"ThenأَنْشَأْنَاهُWe produced himخَلْقاًcreationآخَرَ"،as another",
"Then We produced him as another creation",
فَقَالَso saidعُمَرُ:Umar:
so said Umar:
تَبَارَكَBlessed isاللَّهُAllah,أَحْسَنُthe best ofالْخَالِقِينَ!creators!
Blessed is Allah, the best of creators!
فَقَالَSo saidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,
So said the Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:
may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
وَالَّذِيBy the Oneنَفْسِيin Whose handبِيَدِهِis my soul,
By the One in Whose hand is my soul,
لَقَدْcertainlyخَتَمَهَاconcluded itاللَّهُAllahعَزَّMajesticوَجَلَّand Exalted is He
certainly Allah, Majestic and Exalted is He, concluded it
بِمَاwith whatقُلْتَyou saidيَاOعُمَرُ.Umar.
with what you said, O Umar.
وَعَنْAnd fromسَعْدِSa'dبْنِson ofأَبِيAbiوَقَّاصٍ،Waqqas,
And from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah have mercy on him, who said:
رَحِمَهُmayاللَّهُ،Allah have mercy on him,
may Allah have mercy on him,
قَالَ:he said:
he said:
اسْتَأْذَنَAsked permissionعُمَرُUmarعَلَىto seeرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,
Umar asked permission to see the Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
وَعِنْدَهُwhile with himنِسْوَةٌwere some womenمِنْfromقُرَيْشٍQuraysh
while with him were some women from Quraysh
قَدْwhoseعَلَتْhad risenأَصْوَاتُهُنَّvoices
whose voices had risen
فَأُذِنَso permission was givenلَهُ،to him,
so permission was given to him,
فَلَمَّاand whenدَخَلَhe enteredبَادَرْنَthey rushed toالْحِجَابَ،the veil,
and when he entered they rushed to the veil,
فَضَحِكَso smiledرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,
so the Messenger of Allah smiled,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فَقَالَand saidعُمَرُ:Umar:
and Umar said:
أَضْحَكَMay Allahاللَّهُmakeسِنَّكَ،your teeth smile,
May Allah make you happy,
بِأَبِيmay my fatherأَنْتَbe for youوَأُمِّيand my mother,
may my father and mother be sacrificed for you,
مِمَّat whatضَحِكْتَ؟did you smile?
at what did you smile?
فَقَالَ:He said:
He said:
أَعْجَبُI am amazedمِنَatاللَّوَاتِيthose whoكُنَّwereعِنْدِيwith me
I am amazed at those who were with me
لَمَّاwhenسَمِعْنَthey heardصَوْتَكَyour voiceبَادَرْنَthey rushed toالْحِجَابَ!the veil!
when they heard your voice they rushed to the veil!
فَقَالَ:So he said:
So he said:
أَنْتَYouكُنْتَwereأَحَقَّmore deservingأَنْtoتَهَابَbe fearedيَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِ.of Allah.
You were more deserving to be feared, O Messenger of Allah.
ثُمَّThenأَقْبَلَhe turnedعَلَيْهِنَّto themوَأَغْلَظَand spoke harshlyلَهُنَّto themوَقَالَ:and said:
Then he turned to them and spoke harshly to them and said:
أَتَهَبْنَنِيDo you fear meوَلَاand notتَهَابْنَfearرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ؟and grant him peace?
Do you fear me and not fear the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?
قُلْنَ:They said:
They said:
نَعَمْYes,إِنَّكَindeed youأَفَظُّare harsherوَأَغْلَظُ.and sterner.
Yes, indeed you are harsher and sterner.
فَقَالَSo saidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,
So said the Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:
may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
يَاOعُمَرُUmar,
O Umar,
وَالَّذِيby the Oneنَفْسِيin Whose handبِيَدِهِis my soul,
by the One in Whose hand is my soul,
مَاneverلَقِيَكَhas met youالشَّيْطَانُSatanسَالِكاًtravelingفَجّاًa path
never has Satan met you traveling a path
إِلَّاexcept thatسَلَكَhe traveledفَجّاًa pathغَيْرَother thanفَجِّكَ.your path.
except that he traveled a path other than your path.
[مَحَاسِنُ[The Virtues ofعُثْمَانَUthmanبْنِson ofعَفَّانَ]Affan]
[The Virtues of Uthman bin Affan]
[رَضِيَ[May Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُwith himوَرَحِمَهُ]and have mercy on him]
[May Allah be pleased with him and have mercy on him]
عَنْFromأَنَسِAnasبْنِson ofمَالِكٍMalikقَالَ:who said:
From Anas bin Malik who said:
كَانَWasرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,
The Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فِيinحَائِطٍan orchardمِنْfromحِيطَانِthe orchards ofالْمَدِينَةِMedina
was in an orchard from the orchards of Medina
فَجَاءَso cameأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,
so Abu Bakr came,
رَحِمَهُmayاللَّهُ،Allah have mercy on him,
may Allah have mercy on him,
فَقَالَ:and said:
and said:
افْتَحْ"Openلَهُfor himوَبَشِّرْهُand give him glad tidingsبِالْجَنَّةِ،of Paradise,"
"Open for him and give him glad tidings of Paradise,"
ثُمَّthenجَاءَcameعُمَرُ،Umar,
then came Umar,
رَحِمَهُmayاللَّهُ،Allah have mercy on him,
may Allah have mercy on him,
فَقَالَ:and said:
and said:
افْتَحْ"Openلَهُfor himوَبَشِّرْهُand give him glad tidingsبِالْجَنَّةِ،of Paradise,"
"Open for him and give him glad tidings of Paradise,"
ثُمَّthenجَاءَcameعَلِيٌّ،Ali,
then came Ali,
رِضْوَانُmay the good pleasure ofاللَّهِAllahعَلَيْهِ،be upon him,
may the good pleasure of Allah be upon him,
فَقَالَ:and said:
and said:
افْتَحْ"Openلَهُfor himوَبَشِّرْهُand give him glad tidingsبِالْجَنَّةِ،of Paradise,"
"Open for him and give him glad tidings of Paradise,"
ثُمَّthenجَاءَcameعُثْمَانُ،Uthman,
then came Uthman,
رَضِيَmayاللَّهُAllahعَنْهُ،be pleased with him,
may Allah be pleased with him,
فَقَالَ:and said:
and said:
افْتَحْ"Openلَهُfor himوَبَشِّرْهُand give him glad tidingsبِالْجَنَّةِ،of Paradise,"
"Open for him and give him glad tidings of Paradise,"
فَلَمَّاso whenجَاءَcameعُثْمَانُ،Uthman,
so when Uthman came,
رَحِمَهُmayاللَّهُAllah have mercy on himوَرَحِمَهُمْand have mercy on themأَجْمَعِينَ،all,
may Allah have mercy on him and have mercy on them all,
وَقَدْwhileبَدَتْhad appearedمِنْfromفَخِذِthe thigh ofرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,
while there had appeared from the thigh of the Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
نَاحِيَةٌa part,
a part,
فَقَالَ:so he said:
so he said:
افْتَحْ"Openلَهُfor himوَبَشِّرْهُand give him glad tidingsبِالْجَنَّةِ،of Paradise,"
"Open for him and give him glad tidings of Paradise,"
فَلَمَّاso whenجَاءَcameعُثْمَانُ،Uthman,
so when Uthman came,
رَحِمَهُmayاللَّهُ،Allah have mercy on him,
may Allah have mercy on him,
غَطَاهَا،he covered it,
he covered it,
فَقَالُوا:so they said:
so they said:
يَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِof Allah,
O Messenger of Allah,
مَاwhatلَكَwas with youلَمْthat you didتُغَطِّهُnot cover itحِينَwhenجِئْنَا؟we came?
what was with you that you did not cover it when we came?
فَقَالَ:He said:
He said:
أَلَا"Should I notأَسْتَحْيِيfeel shyمِنْfromرَجُلٍa man
"Should I not feel shy from a man
تَسْتَحْيِيwhom feel shyمِنْهُfrom himالْمَلَائِكَةُ؟"the angels?"
whom the angels feel shy from?"
وَعَنِAnd fromالنَّبِيِّ،the Prophet,
And from the Prophet,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
قَالَ:he said:
he said:
إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Exalted is He
Indeed Allah, Majestic and Exalted is He,
أَمَرَنِيordered meأَنْtoأُزَوِّجَmarryكَرِيمَتِيmy daughterعُثْمَانَto Uthmanبْنَson ofعَفَّانَ،Affan,
ordered me to marry my daughter to Uthman bin Affan,
رَحِمَهُmayاللَّهُ.Allah have mercy on him.
may Allah have mercy on him.
[مَحَاسِنُ[The Virtues ofعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofأَبِيAbiطَالِبٍ]Talib]
[The Virtues of Ali bin Abi Talib]
[رِضْوَانُ[May the good pleasure ofاللَّهِAllahعَلَيْهِ]be upon him]
[May the good pleasure of Allah be upon him]
عَنْFromأَبِيAbuحَيَّانَHayyanالتَّيْمِيِّAl-Taymi
From Abu Hayyan Al-Taymi
عَنْfromأَبِيهِhis father
from his father
عَنْfromعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofأَبِيAbiطَالِبٍ،Talib,
from Ali bin Abi Talib,
رَضِيَmayاللَّهُAllahعَنْهُ،be pleased with him,
may Allah be pleased with him,
قَالَsaidالنَّبِيُّ،the Prophet,
said the Prophet,
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:
may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
رَحِمَMay Allahاللَّهُhave mercy onعَلِيّاً،Ali,
May Allah have mercy on Ali,
اللَّهُمَّO Allah,أَدِرِdirectالْحَقَّthe truthمَعَهُwith himحَيْثُwhereverدَارَ.he turns.
O Allah, direct the truth with him wherever he turns.
