أَبُوAbuعُثْمَانَUthmanقَاضِيjudgeالرَّيِّof RayyعَنِfromالْأَعْمَشِAl-A'mashعَنْfromسَعِيدِSaeedبْنِson ofجُبَيْرٍJubairقَالَ:who said:

كَانَwasعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنُAbbasعَبَّاسٍin Meccaبِمَكَّةَnarratingيُحَدِّثُat the edgeعَلَىof Zamzamشَفِيرِand weزَمْزَمَwere with him.وَنَحْنُand weعِنْدَهُ،were with him.

فَلَمَّاSo whenقَضَىhe finishedحَدِيثَهُhis narrationقَامَstoodإِلَيْهِto himرَجُلٌa manفَقَالَ:and said:

يَاOابْنَson ofعَبَّاسٍAbbas,إِنِّيI amامْرُؤٌa manمِنْfromأَهْلِthe peopleالشَّامِof Sham

مِنْfromأَهْلِthe peopleحِمْصَ،of Homs,إِنَّهُمْtheyيَتَبَرَّؤُونَdisownمِنْAliعَلِيِّbinبْنِAbiأَبِيTalib,طَالِبٍ،may Allahرِضْوَانُbe pleasedاللَّهِwith him,عَلَيْهِ،and theyوَيَلْعَنُونَهُ.curse him.

فَقَالَ:He said:بَلْRather,لَعَنَهُمُmay Allahاللَّهُcurse themفِيin thisالدُّنْيَاworldوَالْآخِرَةِand the Hereafter,وَأَعَدَّand He has preparedلَهُمْfor themعَذَاباًa humiliatingمَهِيناً،punishment.

أَلِبُعْدِIs it because of the remotenessقَرَابَتِهِof his kinshipمِنْfromرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىpeaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and his beingوَأَنَّهُnotلَمْthe firstيَكُنْof the malesأَوْلَof the worldsذِرْكَانِin believingالْعَالَمِينَin Allahإِيمَاناًand His Messenger,بِاللَّهِand the firstوَرَسُولِهِto pray,وَأَوَّلِbow,مَنْand performصَلَّىrighteousوَرَكَعَdeeds?"وَعَمِلَand deedsبِأَعْمَالِof righteousness?الْبِرِّ؟goodness?

قَالَSaidالشَّامِيُّ:the Syrian:إِنَّهُمْ"They,وَاللَّهِby Allah,مَاdo notيُنْكِرُونَdenyقَرَابَتَهُhis kinshipوَسَابِقَتَهُand his precedence,غَيْرَexcept thatأَنَّهُمْthey claimيَزْعُمُونَthatأَنَّهُhe killedقَتَلَthe people."النَّاسَ.people.

فَقَالَSaidابْنُIbnعَبَّاسٍ:Abbas:ثَكِلَتْهُمْ"May their mothersأُمَّهَاتُهُمْ!be bereaved of them!إِنَّIndeed,عَلِيّاًAliأَعْرَفُknows Allahبِاللَّهِthe Mighty and Majestic,عَزَّand His Messenger,وَجَلَّand their rulingsوَبِرَسُولِهِbetterوَبِحُكْمِهِمَاthan them.مِنْهُمْ،And heفَلَمْdid not killيَقْتُلْexceptإِلَّاthoseمَنْwhoاسْتَحَقَّdeservedالْقَتْلَ.to be killed."

قَالَ:He said:يَا"OابْنَIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbas,إِنَّmy peopleقَوْمِيhave collectedجَمَعُواprovisions for me,لِيand I amنَفَقَةًtheir messengerوَأَنَاto youرَسُولُهُمْand their trustee.إِلَيْكَAnd it does notوَأَمِينُهُمْbehoove youوَلَاto turn me awayيَسَعُكَwithoutأَنْmy need being met,تَرُدَّنِيfor the peopleبِغَيْرِare perishingحَاجَتِي،regarding this matter.فَإِنَّSo relieveالْقَوْمَthem,هَالِكُونَmay Allahفِيrelieveأَمْرِهِyou."فَفَرِّجْSo relieveعَنْهُمْthem,فَرَّجَmay Allahاللَّهُrelieveعَنْكَ.you.

فَقَالَSaidابْنُIbnعَبَّاسٍ:Abbas:يَا"Oأَخَاbrotherأَهْلِof the peopleالشَّامِof Sham,إِنَّمَاverilyمَثَلُthe exampleعَلِيٍّof Aliفِيin thisهَذِهِnationالْأُمَّةِregarding his virtueفِيand knowledgeفَضْلِهِis likeوَعِلْمِهِthe righteous servantكَمَثَلِwhomالْعَبْدِMosesالصَّالِحِmet,الَّذِيpeaceلَقِيَهُbe upon him,مُوسَى،when he reachedعَلَيْهِthe seashoreالسَّلَامُ،and said to him:لَمَّاCan I followانْتَهَىyou on conditionإِلَىthat you teach meسَاحِلِsome of whatالْبَحْرِyou have been taughtفَقَالَof right guidance?لَهُ:He said:هَلْVerily,أَتَّبِعُكَyou will notعَلَىbe ableأَنْto have patienceتُعَلِّمَنِيwith me!مِمَّاAnd how canعُلِّمْتَyou have patienceرُشْداً؟with somethingقَالَyou do notالْعَالِمُ:encompassإِنَّكَin knowledge?لَنْMosesتَسْتَطِيعَsaid:مَعِيYou will find me,صَبْراً،if Allah wills,وَكَيْفَpatient,تَصْبِرُand I will notعَلَىdisobey youمَاin anyلَمْmatter.تُحِطْHe said to him:بِهِIf you follow me,خُبْراً؟then do not ask meقَالَabout anythingمُوسَى:until I bring youسَتَجِدُنِيmention of it.إِنْSo they set outشَاءَuntil when theyاللَّهُembarked in the ship,صَابِراًhe tore it.وَلَاAnd he hadأَعْصِيtorn it out ofلَكَpleasing Allahأَمْراً.the Mighty and Majesticقَالَand for the sakeلَهُof its people,الْعَالِمُ:while to Moses,أَلَمْpeace be upon him,أَقُلْit was displeasureلَكَand corruption.إِنَّكَSo Mosesلَنْcould not have patienceتَسْتَطِيعَand abandonedمَعِيwhat he hadصَبْراً،promised, saying:فَإِنِHave you torn itاتَّبَعْتَنِيto drown its people?فَلَاVerily, you haveتَسْأَلْنِيdone a graveعَنْthing!شَيْءٍHe said to him:حَتَّىDid I notأُحْدِثَtell you thatلَكَyou would notمِنْهُbe able to haveذِكْراً.patience with me?فَانْطَلَقَاMoses said:حَتَّىDo not blame meإِذَاfor what I forgotرَكِبَاand do not beفِيhard upon meالسَّفِينَةِin my affair.فَخَرَقَهَا،So he desistedوَكَانَfrom him.قَدْThen they set outخَرَقَهَاuntil when theyلِلَّهِmet a boyجَلَّand he killed him.وَعَزَّAnd his killingرِضاًwas out of pleasingوَلِأَهْلِهَاAllah the Mightyصَلَاحاً،and Majesticوَكَانَand for the sakeعِنْدَof his parents,مُوسَى،while to Moses,عَلَيْهِpeace be upon him,السَّلَامُ،it was a greatسُخْطاًsin.وَفَسَاداًMoses said,فَلَمْnot being ableيَصْبِرْto have patience:مُوسَىHave you killedوَتَرَكَa pure soulمَاfor other thanضَمِنَa soul?لَهُIndeed, you haveفَقَالَ:done somethingأَخَرَقْتَهَاreprehensible!لِتُغْرِقَThe scholar said:أَهْلَهَا؟Did I notلَقَدْtell you thatجِئْتَyou would notشَيْئاًbe able to haveإِمْراً!patience with me?قَالَHe said: IfلَهُI ask you aboutالْعَالِمُ:anything after this,أَلَمْthen do not keepأَقُلْcompany with me.لَكَYou have reachedإِنَّكَan excuse from me.لَنْSo they set outتَسْتَطِيعَuntil when theyمَعِيcame to the peopleصَبْراً؟of a town,قَالَthey askedمُوسَى:its people for food,لَاbut they refusedتُؤَاخِذْنِيto host them.بِمَاThen they foundنَسِيتُtherein a wallوَلَاabout to collapse,تُرْهِقْنِيso he set it up straight.مِنْAnd his settingأَمْرِيit up was outعُسْراً.of pleasing Allahفَكَفَّthe Mighty and Majesticعَنْهُand for the sakeالْعَالِمُ،of the worlds' welfare.فَانْطَلَقَاHe said: Ifحَتَّىyou had wished,إِذَاyou could have takenلَقِيَاfor it a payment.غُلَاماًHe said: Thisفَقَتَلَهُ،is the partingوَكَانَbetween you and me.قَتْلُهُAnd the scholarلِلَّهِknew betterجَلَّthan what Moses,وَعَزَّpeace be upon him,رِضاًwould encounter,وَلِأَبَوَيْهِand the truthصَلَاحاً،was difficultوَكَانَupon Mosesعِنْدَand weighed heavilyمُوسَى،upon himعَلَيْهِsince he did notالسَّلَامُ،know it,ذَنْباًwhereas heعَظِيماً،was a messengerقَالَprophetمُوسَىamong thoseوَلَمْof firm resolveيَصْبِرْ:from whom Allahأَقَتَلْتَthe Mighty and Majesticنَفْساًhad takenزَكِيَّةًa covenantبِغَيْرِregarding prophecy.نَفْسٍ؟So how areلَقَدْyou, O brotherجِئْتَof the peopleشَيْئاًof Sham,نُكْراً!and your companions?قَالَVerily, Ali,الْعَالِمُ:may Allahأَلَمْbe pleased with him,أَقُلْdid not killلَكَexcept thoseإِنَّكَwhose killingلَنْhe deemedتَسْتَطِيعَlawful.مَعِيAnd I inform youصَبْراً؟that the Messengerقَالَ:of Allah,إِنْpeaceسَأَلْتُكَand blessingsعَنْbe upon him,شَيْءٍwas atبَعْدَهَاUmm Salamah's,فَلَاthe daughterتُصَاحِبْنِي،of Abi Umayyah,قَدْwhen Ali,بَلَغْتَpeace be upon him,مِنْapproachedلَدُنِّيwanting to enterعُذْراً.upon the Prophet,فَانْطَلَقَاpeace and blessingsحَتَّىbe upon him.إِذَاSo he knockedأَتَيَاa light knock,أَهْلَand the Messengerقَرْيَةٍof Allah,اسْتَطْعَمَاpeace and blessingsأَهْلَهَاbe upon him,فَأَبَوْاrecognizedأَنْhis knockيُضَيِّفُوهُمَاand said:فَوَجَدَاO Umm Salamah,فِيهَاrise and openجِدَاراًthe door.يُرِيدُShe said:أَنْO Messengerيَنْقَضَّof Allah,فَأَقَامَهُ،who is thisوَكَانَwhose statusإِقَامَتُهُis such thatلِلَّهِI should meet himعَزَّwith my adornmentsوَجَلَّand my lack of them?رِضاًHe said:وَلِلْعَالَمِينَO Umm Salamah,صَلَاحاً،verily, obedienceفَقَالَ:to me is obedienceلَوْto Allahشِئْتَthe Mighty and Majestic.لَاتَّخَذْتَAnd he said:عَلَيْهِ"And whoeverأَجْراً،obeys the Messengerقَالَ:has certainlyهَذَاobeyed Allah."فِرَاقُRise, O Umm Salamah,بَيْنِيfor at the doorوَبَيْنَكَ.is a manوَكَانَwho is neitherالْعَالِمُharsh nor recklessأَعْلَمَnor hastyبِمَاin his affair,يَأْتِيhe loves Allahمُوسَى،and His Messengerعَلَيْهِand Allah and His Messengerالسَّلَامُ،love him.وَكَبُرَO Umm Salamah,عَلَىif you openمُوسَىthe door for him,الْحَقُّhe will not enterوَعَظُمَuntil his footstepsإِذْare hidden from him.لَمْSo he did not enterيَكُنْuntil she stepped awayيَعْرِفُهُand his footstepsهَذَاwere hidden from him.وَهُوَWhen she did notنَبِيٌّperceive any movementمُرْسَلٌfrom her,مِنْhe pushedأُولِيthe doorالْعَزْمِand entered,مِمَّنْthen greetedقَدْthe Prophet,أَخَذَpeace and blessingsاللَّهُbe upon him.جَلَّSo he returnedوَعَزَّthe greetingمِيثَاقَهُand said:عَلَىO Umm Salamah,النُّبُوَّةِ،do you know this man?فَكَيْفَShe said:أَنْتَYes,يَاthis is Aliأَخَاbin Abi Talib.أَهْلِSo the Messengerالشَّامِof Allah,وَأَصْحَابُكَ؟peace and blessingsإِنَّbe upon him, said:عَلِيّاً،Yes,رَضِيَthis is Ali,اللَّهُhis flesh is mingledعَنْهُ،with my fleshلَمْand his bloodيَقْتُلْwith my blood,إِلَّاand he is to meمَنْlike the positionكَانَof Aaronيَسْتَحِلُّto Moses,قَتْلَهُ،except thatوَإِنِّيthere is no prophetأُخْبِرُكَafter me.أَنَّO Umm Salamah,رَسُولَthis Ali is a master,اللَّهِ،venerated,صَلَّىhoped by the Muslims,اللَّهُthe Commanderعَلَيْهِof the Faithful,وَسَلَّمَ،the repository of my secretكَانَand my knowledge,عِنْدَand my doorأُمِّthrough whichسَلَمَةَone seeks refuge,بِنْتِand he is the trusteeأَبِيover my householdأُمَيَّةَand over the righteousإِذْof my nation,أَقْبَلَand he is my brotherعَلِيٌّ،in this worldعَلَيْهِand the Hereafter,السَّلَامُ،and he is with meيُرِيدُin the highestالدُّخُولَdignity.عَلَىBear witness,النَّبِيِّ،O Umm Salamah,صَلَّىthat Aliاللَّهُwill fightعَلَيْهِthe Oath-breakers,وَسَلَّمَ،the Wrongdoers,فَنَقَرَand the Renegades.نَقْراًIbn Abbas said:خَفِيّاًAnd their killingفَعَرَفَwas out of pleasingرَسُولُAllah, a welfareاللَّهِ،for the
