قِيلَ:ItدَخَلَenteredأَبُوAbuعَلْقَمَةَAlqamahالنَّحْوِيُّthe grammarianعَلَىtoأَعْيَنَA'yanالطَّبِيبِthe physicianفَقَالَand he saidلَهُ:to him:

It was said: Abu Alqamah the grammarian entered upon A'yan the physician and said to him:

إِنِّيIndeed Iأَكَلْتُateمِنْfromلُحُومِmeatsهَذِهِof theseالْجَوَازِيءِfat young locusts

Indeed I ate from the meats of these fat young locusts

فَطَسِئْتُand I suffered indigestionطَسْأَةًa bout of indigestion

and I suffered a bout of indigestion

فَأَصَابَنِيand there afflicted meوَجَعٌa painمَاwhat isبَيْنَbetweenالْوَابِلَةِthe first vertebraإِلَىtoدَأْيَةِthe backboneالْعُنُقِof the neck

and a pain afflicted me between the first vertebra and the backbone of the neck

وَلَمْand it did notيَزَلْceaseيَرْبُوswellingوَيَنْمُوand growingحَتَّىuntilخَالَطَit mixed withالْخَلَبَthe pericardiumوَالشَّرَاسِيفَand the cartilages of the ribs

and it kept swelling and growing until it reached the pericardium and the rib cartilages

فَهَلْso doعِنْدَكَyou haveدَوَاءٌ؟a medicine?

so do you have a medicine?

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،Yes,خُذْtakeخَرْفَقاًhelleboreوَسَلْفَقاًand a ragفَرْرِقْهُshred itوَاغْسِلْهُand wash itبِمَاءِwith waterرَوْثٍof dungوَاشْرَبْهُ.and drink it.

He said: Yes, take hellebore and a rag, shred it, wash it with dung water, and drink it.

قَالَ:He said:لَاI do notأَدْرِيknowمَاwhatتَقُولُ!you are saying!

He said: I do not know what you are saying!

قَالَ:He said:وَلَاNorأَنَاdo Iأَدْرِيknowمَاwhatتَقُولُ.you are saying.

He said: Nor do I know what you are saying.

وَقَالَAnd saidلَهُto himآخَرُ:another:

And another said to him:

إِنِّيIndeed Iأَجِدُfindمَعْمَعَةًa burning heatفِيinبَطْنِيmy bellyوَقَرْقَرَةً،and a rumbling,

Indeed I find a burning heat in my belly and a rumbling,

فَقَالَso he saidلَهُ:to him:أَمَّاAs forالْمَعْمَعَةُthe burning heatفَلَاI do notأَعْرِفُهَا،know it,

so he said to him: As for the burning heat, I do not know it,

وَأَمَّاand as forالْقَرْقَرَةُthe rumblingفَهُوَit isضِرَاطٌflatulenceلَمْthat has notيَنْضُجْ.ripened.

and as for the rumbling, it is flatulence that has not ripened.

قِيلَ:It was said:وَأَتَىand cameرَجُلٌa manإِلَىtoالْهَيْثَمِAl-Haythamبْنِson ofعُرْيَانَUryan

It was said: A man came to Al-Haytham ibn Uryan

بِغَرِيمٍwith a debtorلَهُof hisوَقَدْwhileمَطَلَهُhe had delayed himفِيregardingحَقٍّa rightلَهُdue to him

with a debtor of his who had delayed him regarding a right due to him

فَقَالَ:and he said:أَصْلَحَMay God mendاللَّهُGodالْأَمِيرَ!the commander!إِنَّIndeedلِيfor meعَلَىagainstهَذَاthis personحَقّاًa rightقَدْwhichغَلَبَنِيhe has overpowered meعَلَيْهِ.regarding it.

and he said: May God mend the commander! Indeed I have a right against this person which he has withheld from me.

فَقَالَAnd saidلَهُto himالْآخَرُ:the other:أَصْلَحَكَMay God mend youاللَّهُ!God!

And the other said to him: May God mend you!

إِنَّIndeedهَذَاthis manبَاعَنِيsold meعَنْجَداًgrapesوَقَدْandاسْتَنْسَأْتُهُI asked him to delay paymentحَوْلاًfor a year

Indeed this man sold me grapes and I asked him to delay payment for a year

وَشَرَطْتُand I stipulatedأَنْthatأُعْطِيَهُI would give it to himمَيَاوَمَةًdailyفَهُوَyet heلَاdoes notيَلْقَانِيmeet meفِيatلُقْمٍa mealإِلَّاexceptاقْتَضَانِي.he demands payment from me.

and I stipulated that I would pay him daily, yet he does not meet me at a meal except that he demands payment from me.

فَقَالَSo saidلَهُto himالْهَيْثَمُ:Al-Haytham:أَمِنْAre you fromبَنِيthe sons ofشَيْبَةَShaibahأَنْتَ؟you?

So Al-Haytham said to him: Are you from the sons of Shaibah?

قَالَ:He said:لَا.No.

He said: No.

قَالَ:He said:فَمِنْThen fromبَنِيthe sons ofهَاشِمٍ؟Hashim?

He said: Then from the sons of Hashim?

قَالَ:He said:لَا.No.

He said: No.

قَالَ:He said:فَمِنْThen fromأَكْفَائِهِمْtheir peersمِنَfromالْعَرَبِ؟the Arabs?

He said: Then from their peers among the Arabs?

قَالَ:He said:لَا.No.

He said: No.

قَالَ:He said:وَيْلِيWoe isعَلَيْكَ!you!انْزِعْStrip offثِيَابَهُhis clothesيَاOحَرَسِيُّ!guard!

He said: Woe to you! Strip off his clothes, O guard!

فَلَمَّاSo whenأَرَادُواthey wantedأَنْtoيَنْزِعُواstrip offثِيَابَهُhis clothesقَالَ:he said:أَصْلَحَكَMay God mend youاللَّهُ!God!

So when they wanted to strip off his clothes he said: May God mend you!

إِنَّIndeedإِزَارِيmy lower garmentمَرْعَبِلٌ.is tattered.

Indeed my lower garment is tattered.

فَقَالَ:So he said:دَعُوهُ،Leave him,فَلَوْfor ifتُرِكَa stranger were leftالْغَرِيبُa strangerفِيinمَوْضِعٍa placeلَتَرَكَهُhe would leave himفِيinهَذَاthisالْمَوْضِعِ.place.

So he said: Leave him, for if a stranger were left in any place, he would leave him in this place.

قَالَ:He said:وَمَرَّAnd passedأَبُوAbuعَلْقَمَةَAlqamahبِبَعْضِby someالطُّرُقِroads

He said: Abu Alqamah passed by some roads

فَهَاجَتْand there stirredبِهِin himمِرَّةٌa bout of black bile

and a fit of melancholy stirred in him

فَوَثَبَso leaptعَلَيْهِupon himقَوْمٌa peopleوَأَقْبَلُواand they proceededيَعَضُّونَbitingإِبْهَامَهُhis thumbوَيُؤَذِّنُونَand calling the call to prayerفِيinأُذُنِهِ.his ear.

so a group of people leapt upon him and proceeded to bite his thumb and call the adhan in his ear.

فَأَفْلَتَSo he escapedمِنْfromأَيْدِيهِمْtheir handsوَقَالَ:and said:مَاWhatلَكُمْis with you thatتَتَكَأَكُونَyou crowdعَلَيَّupon meكَمَاasتَتَكَأَكُونَyou crowdعَلَىuponذِيone possessedجِنَّةٍ؟by a jinn?

So he escaped from their hands and said: What is wrong with you that you crowd upon me as you crowd upon someone possessed by a jinn?

افْرَنْقِعُواDisperseعَنِّي!from me!

Disperse from me!

فَقَالَSo saidرَجُلٌa manمِنْهُمْ:among them:دَعُوهُ،Leave him,فَإِنَّfor indeedشَيْطَانَهُhis devilهِنْدِيٌّis Indianيَتَكَلَّمُand he speaksبِالْهِنْدِيَّةِ.in Indian.

So a man among them said: Leave him, for indeed his devil is Indian and speaks in Indian.

وَقَالَAnd he saidمَرَّةًonceلِحَجَّامٍto a cupperيَحْجُمُهُ:who was cupping him:

And he once said to a cupper who was cupping him:

اشْدُدْTightenقَصَبَthe tubesالْمَلَازِمِof the cupsوَارْهِفْand sharpenظُبَةَthe bladesالْمَشَارِطِof the lancets

Tighten the tubes of the cups, sharpen the blades of the lancets,

وَخَفِّفِand lightenالْوَضْعَthe placementوَعَجِّلِand hastenالنَّزْعَ،the removal,

lighten the placement and hasten the removal,

وَلْيَكُنْand letشَرْطُكَyour incisionوَخْزاًbe a prickingوَمَصُّكَand your suctionنَهْزاً،be a thrusting,

and let your incision be a pricking and your suction be a thrusting,

وَلَاand do notتَكْرَهَنَّdislikeأَبِيّاًone who refusesوَلَاnorتَرُدَّنَّturn awayآتِياً.one who comes.

and do not loathe one who refuses nor turn away one who comes.

فَوَضَعَSo placedالْحَجَّامُthe cupperمَحَاجِمَهُhis cupping vesselsفِيinجُونَتِهِhis leather bagوَمَضَى.and departed.

So the cupper placed his cupping vessels in his leather bag and departed.

[مَحَاسِنِ[The Beauties ofالْمُكَاتَبَاتِ]Correspondence]

[The Beauties of Correspondence]

قَالَ:He said:وَقَالَAnd saidكَعْبُKa'bالْعَبْسِيُّal-Absiلِعُرْوَةَto Urwahبْنِson ofالزُّبَيْرِ:al-Zubayr:

He said: Ka'b al-Absi said to Urwah ibn al-Zubayr:

قَدْIndeedأَذْنَبْتُI have committedذَنْباًa sinإِلَىagainstالْوَلِيدِal-Walidبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِal-Malik

I have committed a sin against al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik

وَلَيْسَand there is notيُزِيلُremovingغَضَبَهُhis angerشَيْءٌanythingفَاكْتُبْso writeإِلَيْهِ.to him.

and nothing removes his anger, so write to him.

فَكَتَبَ:So he wrote:

So he wrote:

لَوْIfلَمْthere were notيَكُنْfor Ka'bلِكَعْبٍof ancientمِنْsanctityقَدِيمِwhatحُرْمَتِهِwould causeمَاto be forgivenيُغْفَرُfor himلَهُthe greatnessعَظِيمُof his crimeجَرِيرَتِهِit would have been mandatoryلَوَجَبَthat you do not deprive himأَنْof baskingلَاin the shadeتُحْرِمَهُof your pardonالتَّفَيُّؤَwhich heartsبِظِلِّhopeعَفْوِكَand to whichالَّذِيsins clingتَأْمُلُهُand he has soughtالْقُلُوبُ،my intercessionوَلَاwith youتَعْلَقُso I trustedبِهِfor himالذُّنُوبُfrom youوَقَدْin a pardonاسْتَشْفَعَunmixedبِيwith wrathإِلَيْكَso fulfillفَوَثِقْتُhis hopeلَهُin meمِنْكَand verifyبِعَفْوٍmy trustلَاin youيُخْلِطُهُtaking it as an opportunityسَخَطٌ،for gratitudeفَحَقِّقْinitiatingأَمَلَهُwith favor.فِيَّin meوَصَدِّقْand verifyثِقَتِيmy trustبِكَin youمُغْتَنِماًconsidering it a gainلِلشُّكْرِgratitudeمُبْتَدِئاًinitiatingبِالنِّعْمَةِ.with blessing.

If Ka'b had no ancient sanctity for which his great crime would be forgiven, it would still be mandatory not to deprive him of basking in the shade of your pardon which hearts hope for and to which sins cling. He has sought my intercession with you, so I have assured him of a pardon from you unmixed with wrath, so fulfill his hope in me and verify my trust in you, seizing the opportunity for gratitude and initiating with favor.

فَكَتَبَSo wroteإِلَيْهِto himالْوَلِيدُ:al-Walid:

So al-Walid wrote to him:

قَدْI haveشَكَرْتُthankedرَغْبَتَهُhis appealإِلَيْكَto youوَعَفَوْتُand pardonedعَنْهُhimلِمَعْوَلِهِdue to his relianceعَلَيْكَ،upon you,

I have thanked his appeal to you and pardoned him due to his reliance upon you,

وَلَهُand he hasعِنْدِيwith meالَّذِيthat whichتُحِبُّyou loveإِنْifلَمْyou do notتَقْطَعْcut offكُتُبَكَyour lettersعَنِّيfrom meفِيinأَمْثَالِهِsuch mattersوَفِيand inسَائِرِallأُمُورِكَ.your affairs.

and he has with me what you love, provided you do not cut off your letters to me regarding such matters and in all your affairs.

قَالَ:He said:وَكَتَبَAnd wroteعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنُMuawiyahمُعَاوِيَةَbinبْنِAbdullahعَبْدِbinاللَّهِJa'farبْنِto someجَعْفَرٍof his brothersإِلَىtoبَعْضِsomeإِخْوَانِهِ:of his brothers:

He said: Abdullah ibn Muawiyah ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far wrote to some of his brothers:

أَمَّاAs forبَعْدُafterwardفَقَدْindeedعَاقَنِيhas hindered meالشَّكُّdoubtعَنْfromعَزِيمَةِthe firmnessالرَّأْيِ،of opinion,

As for after: doubt has hindered me from the firmness of opinion,

ابْتَدَأْتَنِيyou began toward meبِلُطْفٍwith gentlenessمِنْwithoutغَيْرِanyخِبْرَةٍprior experienceثُمَّthenأَعْقَبْتَنِيyou followed it up toward meجَفَاءًwith harshnessمِنْwithoutغَيْرِanyذَنْبٍsin

you began toward me with gentleness without prior experience, then you followed it up toward me with harshness without any sin

طَمَّعَنِيyour beginningأَوَّلُكَmade me hopefulفِيinإِخَائِكَyour brotherhoodوَأَيْسَفَنِيand your endآخِرُكَmade me despairمِنْofوَفَائِكَ،your loyalty,

Your beginning made me hopeful in your brotherhood and your end made me despair of your loyalty,

فَلَاso neitherأَنَاam Iفِيinغَيْرِother thanالرَّجَاءِhopeمُجْمِعٌresolvedلَكَfor youاطْرَاحاًon abandonmentوَلَاnorفِيinغُدُوِّmorningانْتِظَارٍwaitingمِنْكَfrom youعَلَىuponثِقَةٍ،certainty,

so neither am I resolved on completely abandoning you other than in hope, nor am I upon certainty in the morning waiting for you,

فَسُبْحَانَso gloryمَنْbe to Himلَوْwho ifشَاءَHe willedكَشَفَHe would have uncoveredبِإِيضَاحِby clarifyingالرَّأْيِthe opinionفِيكَregarding youمَاwhatأَقَمْنَاwe remainedعَلَىuponائْتِلَافٍharmonyوَافْتَرَقْنَاand we partedعَلَىuponاخْتِلَافٍ.discord.

so glory be to Him who, had He willed, would have uncovered by clarifying the opinion regarding you so that we would not have remained upon harmony nor parted upon discord.

قَالَ:He said:وَسَخِطَAnd became angryمَسْلَمَةُMaslamahبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِal-Malikعَلَىwithالْعُرْيَانِal-Uryanبْنِson ofالْهَيْثَمِal-Haytham

He said: Maslamah ibn Abd al-Malik became angry with al-Uryan ibn al-Haytham

فَعَزَلَهُso he dismissed himعَنْfromشُرْطَةِthe police forceالْكُوفَةِof Kufa

so he dismissed him from the police force of Kufa

فَشَكَاand he complainedذَلِكَof thatإِلَىtoعُمَرَUmarبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdالْعَزِيزِ،al-Aziz,

and he complained of that to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz,

فَكَتَبَso he wroteإِلَيْهِ:to him:

so he wrote to him:

فَإِنَّFor indeedمِنْfromحِفْظِpreservingنِعَمِthe blessingsاللَّهِof Godرِعَايَةُis the observance ofحَقِّthe right ofذَوِيthose ofالْأَسْنَانِ،age,

For indeed among the ways of preserving God's blessings is observing the rights of the elders,

وَمِنْand fromإِظْهَارِdisplayingشُكْرِgratitude forالْمَوْهُوبِwhat has been bestowedلَهُupon himصَفْحُis the pardoning byالْقَادِرِone who is capableعَنِofالذُّنُوبِ،sins,

and from displaying gratitude for bestowed blessings is the pardoning by one who is capable of sins,

وَمِنْand fromتَمَامِthe perfection ofالسُّودَدِmasteryحِفْظُis the safeguarding ofالْوَدَائِعِtrustsوَاسْتِتْمَامُand the completion ofالصَّنَائِعِ،favors,

and from the perfection of mastery is safeguarding trusts and completing favors,

وَقَدْand you hadكُنْتَbestowedأَوْدَعْتَupon al-Uryanالْعُرْيَانَa blessingنِعْمَةًfrom your blessingsمِنْso you stripped it awayنِعَمِكَby the hasteفَسَلَبْتَهَاof your anger,عَجَلَةَand you were notسَخَطِكَ،fair to himوَمَاwhen you forced himأَنْصَفْتَهُthen appointed himإِذْthen dismissed himغَصَبْتَهُand left him idle,عَلَىand I amأَنْhis intercessorوَلَّيْتَهُso I would loveثُمَّthat you makeعَزَلْتَهُfor him a shareوَخَلَّيْتَهُ،from your heartوَأَنَاand not remove himشَفِيعُهُfrom your good opinionفَأُحِبُّlest what you entrusted to himأَنْbe lostتَجْعَلَand what you bestowedلَهُperish.مِنْSo he pardonedقَلْبِكَhim.نَصِيباًshareوَلَاand notتُخْرِجْهُdrive him outمِنْfromحُسْنِthe goodness ofرَأْيِكَyour opinionفَيَضِيعَso that there is lostمَاwhatأَوْدَعْتَهُyou entrusted him withوَيْتَوَىand perishesمَاwhatأَفَدْتَهُ.you bestowed.

And you had deposited a blessing of your blessings with al-Uryan, but you stripped it away in the haste of your anger. You were not fair to him when you forced him, then appointed him, then dismissed him, and left him idle. I am his intercessor, and I would love for you to make for him a share in your heart and not remove him from your good opinion, lest what you entrusted to him be lost and what you bestowed upon him perish. So he pardoned him.

قَالَ:He said:وَغَضِبَAnd became angryسُلَيْمَانُSulaymanبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِal-MalikعَلَىwithأَبِيAbuعُبَيْدَةَUbaydahمَوْلَاهُhis freedman

He said: Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik became angry with Abu Ubaydah his freedman

فَشَكَاso he complainedإِلَىtoسَعِيدِSaeedبْنِson ofالْمُسَيَّبِal-Musayyabذَلِكَ،about that,

and he complained about that to Saeed ibn al-Musayyab,

فَكَتَبَso he wroteإِلَيْهِ:to him:

so he wrote to him:

أَمَّاAs forبَعْدُafterwardفَإِنَّfor indeedأَمِيرَthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulفِيis inالْمَوْضِعِthe positionالَّذِيwhichيَرْتَفِعُraisesقَدْرُهُhis statusعَنْaboveأَنْthatتَعْصِيَهُhis subjects disobey himرَعِيَّتُهُhis subjects

As for after: indeed the Commander of the Faithful is in a position whose status is too high for his subjects to disobey him,

وَفِيand inعَفْوِthe pardon ofأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulسَعَةٌthere is ample roomلِلْمُسْلِمِينَ.for the Muslims.

and in the pardon of the Commander of the Faithful there is ample room for the Muslims.

فَرَضِيَSo he became pleasedعَنْهُ.with him.

So he became pleased with him.

قَالَ:He said:وَطَلَبَAnd requestedالْعَتَّابِيُّal-Attabiمِنْfromرَجُلٍa manحَاجَةًa favor

He said: Al-Attabi requested a favor from a man

فَقَضَىso he fulfilledلَهُfor himبَعْضَهَاpart of itوَمَاطَلَهُand delayed himبِبَعْضٍ.regarding the rest.

and he fulfilled part of it for him and delayed him regarding the rest.

فَكَتَبَSo he wroteإِلَيْهِ:to him:

So he wrote to him:

أَمَّاAs forبَعْدُafterwardفَقَدْindeedتَرَكْتَنِيyou have left meمُنْتَظِراًwaitingلِرِفْدِكَfor your aid

As for after: indeed you have left me waiting for your aid

وَصَاحِبُand the one in need ofالْحَاجَةِa needمُحْتَاجٌis in need ofإِلَىfavors that areنِعَمٍeither pleasantهَنِيئَةٍor at leastأَوْrelieving,لَاand a beautifulمُرِيحَةٍ،excuseوَالْعُذْرُis betterالْجَمِيلُthan prolongedأَحْسَنُdelay,مِنَand you haveالْمَطْلِwritten:الطَّوِيلِ،long,وَقَدْandكَتَبْتُ:you wrote:

and the one in need is in need of favors that are either pleasant or relieving, and a beautiful excuse is better than prolonged delay, and you have written:

بَسَطْتُI stretchedلِسَانِيmy tongueثُمَّthenأَوْثَقْتَyou boundنِصْفَهُhalf of it......فَنِصْفُso halfلِسَانِيof my tongueبِامْتِدَاحِكَin praising youمُطْلَقُis free

I stretched my tongue then you bound half of it ... so half of my tongue in praising you is free

فَإِنْSo ifأَنْتَyouلَمْdo notتُنْجِزْfulfillعِدَاتِيmy promisesتَرَكْتَنِيyou leave me......وَبَاقِيand the restلِسَانِof the tongueالشُّكْرِof gratitudeبَالِيَworn outالْيَأْسِby despairمُوثَقُbound

So if you do not fulfill my promises you leave me ... and the rest of the tongue of gratitude is worn out and bound by despair

قَالَ:He said:وَلَمَّاAnd whenبَنَىbuiltالْمَهْدِيُّal-MahdiبُرَيْطَةَBuraytahابْنَةَdaughterأَبِيof Abuالْعَبَّاسِal-Abbas

He said: And when al-Mahdi built Buraytah daughter of Abu al-Abbas

كَتَبَwroteإِلَيْهِto himيَحْيَىYahyaبْنُson ofسَعِيدِSaeedبْنِson ofقَيْسٍQaysالْأَنْصَارِيُّ:al-Ansari:

Yahya ibn Saeed ibn Qays al-Ansari wrote to him:

أَدَامَMay God perpetuateاللَّهُGodلَكَfor youجَمِيلَthe beauty ofعَادَاتِهِHis habitsعِنْدَكَwith you

May God perpetuate for you the beauty of His habits with you

وَأَوْتَرَand make continuousمَاwhatيَجْرِيflowsبِهِwith itالْقَدَرُdestinyلَكَfor you

and make continuous what destiny brings for you

وَلَاand mayزَالَتْnot ceaseيَدُthe hand ofاللَّهِGodتَحُوطُكَsurrounding youفِيinالْمَحْبُوبِwhat is belovedوَتَدْرَأُand warding offعَنْكَfrom youالْمَكْرُوهَ،what is disliked,

and may the hand of God not cease surrounding you in what is beloved and warding off from you what is disliked,

وَهُنِّئْتَand may you be congratulatedبِهَذِهِwith thisالنِّعْمَةِblessingوَمَلِكْتَهَاand possess itآمِناًsafeمِنْfromزَوَالِهَاits cessationبِطُولِby the length ofالْبَقَاءِsurvivalوَالْمُدَّةِ.and span.

and may you be congratulated with this blessing and possess it safe from its cessation through long survival and span.

فَقَالَتْSo saidلَهُto himرَيْطَةُ:Raytah:مَاThere isلِهَذَاfor thisالْكَلَامِspeechثَمَنٌ!no price!

So Raytah said to him: This speech has no price!
